Book Review

The God of small things by Arundhati Roy

A common phrase we come across most of the time is "Don't judge a book by its cover". But we don't always need to abide by that phrase. Don't take me wrong! When you are in a book store, lost among the ocean of books and not knowing which one to pick, won't you just go by the attractive cover, an appealing title and of course a best seller tag to it ?(Fortunately, it might be written by a familiar author too !) This happened to me a hell lot of times and this book I chose had an even better tag line "THE BOOKER PRIZE WINNER". The moment I saw that, I immediately bought it and added to my stack of prized processions. I'm very grateful to have picked it up, else I would have missed a wonderful book.

Plot :

It is a story about the childhood experiences of fraternal twins Estha and Rahel whose lives are destroyed by the "Love Laws" that lay down "who should be loved, and how. And how much." The book explores how the small things affect people's behavior and their lives. Set in Ayemenem( a village in Kerala- Gods own country) it discusses various themes such as caste prejudice, cultural tensions, forbidden love, betrayal, Indian politics. " They all broke the rules. They all crossed into forbidden territory. They all tampered with the laws that lay down who should be loved and how. And how much. The laws that make grandmothers grandmothers, uncles uncles, mothers mothers, cousins cousins, jam jam, and jelly jelly. "

- Few lines from the book that gives you a glimpse of its theme.

No doubt! This is one of the most celebrated books in the history of English literature.

Why should one read this book ?

1. Are you looking for something pure and straight from the heart ? Then this one is for you and it will live with u forever.

2. Are you bored of reading a book confined to a single genre ? Then go for this as this can't be listed under a single genre as such.

3. Do you wanna travel back in time and look at India in its 1960's ?

4. Do u wanna recall your childhood ?

It is relatable in every aspect. It will make u think, it will make u laugh, it will make u cry..Every long forgotten emotion of yours will be evoked from within.

“ "It didn't matter that the story had begun, because Kathakali discovered long ago that the secret of the Great Stories is that they have no secrets. The Great Stories are the ones you have heard and want to hear again. The ones you can enter anywhere and inhabit comfortably. They don't deceive you with thrills and trick endings."

- A quote from The God of small things

And this book stands true to every word of the above lines.

Little about the author :

Arundhati Roy (born 24 November 1961) is an Indian author. She is best known for her novel The God of Small Things (1997), which won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction in 1997. This novel became the biggest-selling book by a non-expatriate Indian author. She is also a political activist involved in human rights and environmental causes.

P.s

I, being an amateurish reader found it difficult to cope up with the writing style as the events are not revealed in chronological order, also the language is highly refined. That is why it is considered to be a masterpiece. So it took me more time than what a normal 300 page novel would take. But trust me ! It is worth every second you spend, worth every penny you spend if you want to own one for yourself. Every line is a poem in itself. It beautifully depicts every incident. Every moment is like a painting on the canvas called mind.

I highly recommend you to read this book. Read the book and decide for yourselves !
