Remembering Hindi Cinema's Most Versatile Actor: Om Puri

Veteran actor Om Puri, famous for his fantastic roles in many Hindi movies over the years, earning him the name of Hindi Cinema's most versatile actor, passed away last year on this day following a massive heart attack at the age of 66, leaving cinema fans across the nation in shock. 

Om Puri, known for his roles in movies like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Hera Pheri, also won a National Award twice for his acting prowess for the movies Ardh Satya and Arohan. He was also known for his iconic voice and narrative style; apart from having acted in several international movies. Here are Om Puri's most celebrated roles, in his memory.

1. Arohan 

Released in 1982, the film was directed by Shyam Benegal, saw Om Puri play the role of a poor farmer in times when communist propaganda started to spread in and around their village and districts. Om Puri's portrayal of a poor farmer with a family in times when youth believed in communism and social uprising earned him his first National Award.

2.  Ardh Satya (1984) 

Puri played the role of a cop in this movie, which nets him the second National Award for best actor, opposite luminaries like Nasaruddin Shah and Smita Patel and directed by Govind Nihalani. 

3. Gupt (1997)

Gupt has been recently been attaining cult status among fans of Bollywood movies, and Om Puri plays the role of Udham Singh, an honest cop tasked with bringing Bobby Deol's character to justice. According to Om Puri himself, he considered his role to be a success because even people on the street started calling him by the name of his character from the movie, despite he himself not having watched the final cut himself, as he was busy with the birth of his child. 

4. Mrityudand (1997) 

Set in Bihar, this movie centred around violence in a village orchestrated by the powers that be of the village, portraying innocent people being caught in the storm of village politics. Om Puri wore a heavy moustache and a shawl draped, 'dramatically', as the man himself describes it. His performance was well appreciated by the critics at launch. 

5. East is East (1999)  

An English comedy-drama by a British director, Om Puri plays a Pakistani man married to an English woman, and the movie is set around their daily life, raising 7 children, and running a fish and chips shop. 

6. Mere Baap Phele Aap (2008)  

Om Puri was also known for his excellent comedic roles, Mere Baap Phele Aap sees him play a lonely and professionally successful man who is desperate to get married after being left at the altar. 

7. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983) 

One of the funniest movies made in India, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro is a dark satire on rampant corruption in Indian politics, and society, with a star cast of  Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Satish Shah, Satish Kaushik, Bhakti Barve and Neena Gupta. Om Puri, along with Shah was one of the most important factors for this movie's success, today it has reached classic status and is a must watch. 

8. Hera Pheri (2000) 

This movie is extremely famous for its dialogues, comedy and characters, with Om Puri playing the role of Khadak Singh, and is one of the best movies Bollywood has released. It goes without saying that this movie is a must watch, and has spawned a sequel, with one more movie slated for release soon. 

9. Maachis (1996) 

Perhaps one of the finest movies Om Puri has acted in, Maachis is about what atrocities a man can descend to due to circumstances, with the movie being set in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star and Indira Gandhi's assassination, with the backdrop of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Om Puri plays the role of Sanathan, a chemistry professor embroiled in a battle bigger than him. 

10. Don 2 (2011) 

Om Puri shines along with actors Shah Rukh Khan and Boman Irani (who plays the antagonist), in a movie that amazed fans. Om Puri played the head of the Malaysian INTERPOL, on the hunt for the enigmatic Don.
