[{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1501333999679","data":"We reviewed the PlayStation 4 Pro when it came out, but we left out it's less powerful doppelganger and the original PlayStation 4 from scrutiny, something that I aim to fix today. <\/p>As a life long gamer that mostly plays on PC, my exposure to consoles has been marred by the lack of functionality that a PC offers, but since this review is not about PC gaming, but about the merits and demerits of the PlayStation 4 console when compared with other competing consoles, I will refrain from comparing the console to PC gaming for the purpose of this review, and speak at length about the pros and cons of the original PlayStation 4 compared to the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 Pro and the Nintendo Switch. <\/p>"},{"type":"img","id":"img-uid-1501337470669","data":"597ca1fec63f0"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1501337472563","data":"The Pros (pun not intended): <\/b><\/p>The pros of the original PlayStation 4 in comparison with the newer and more powerful PS4 Pro still hold up. I had previously remarked in the PlayStation 4 Pro review that it was pointless to purchase the console unless you had a 4K TV to properly use it to its full extent, and I stand by what I've written to this day. If you have a Full HD TV and are stuck in choosing between the PS4 and the Pro, you should go for the original PS4, the cheaper and arguably better option, considering. <\/p>I wouldn't exactly use the term 'Value for Money' here because the nature of the advantages and disadvantages between the two cousins depend solely on whether you, the user, has a 4K TV ready and waiting back in your home. It's not so much as a 'value for money' product rather than a simply better investment: the Pro also offers higher frame rates which, should it have been for almost all games, been a blessing and automatically made the PS4 Pro the smartest choice for a home console, but it only offers high frame rates in a limited number of games. This, combined with it only being properly viable with an expensive TV makes PS4 Pro the inferior choice to the PS4. <\/p>Coming to the console itself, it is powered by an 8 core AMD Jaguar processor and a 1.84 Teraflops GPU, and boasts of an 8GB DDR5 RAM under the hood. Might not sound impressive to my more PC inclined readers, but this is decently powerful enough, and for developers who work extensively on this hardware, allows to be pushed to its limit to create some really beautiful games. Uncharted 4 comes to mind. <\/p>"},{"type":"img","id":"img-uid-1501338155540","data":"597ca21b40e78"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1501338157851","data":"The Games: <\/b><\/p>When it comes to console gaming, no matter how good the hardware is, if there isn't enough software to justify the purchase of the console, it will fail. Sony, of course, is no stranger to this fact. Back during the turn of the millennium, Sony's PlayStation 2 dominated the market completely, destroying their competition with release after release of exclusive content that was only available on the PS2. The Sega Dreamcast, which was launched to compete with the PS2 and was more powerful, failed because there simply wasn't enough interesting media on it to warrant a purchase. The PS2 remains the only home console in the world with the largest library of games: by the end of the PS2 era, there were well over 1000 games on the console. <\/p>Despite Sony having won the console wars of the generation back then, it seemed like it failed to understand what made the PS2 so successful in the first couple of years since the launch of the PS4. I had a brief period of not recommending the console to anyone because there simply were no games worth playing for a really long time in this console generation, except Fromsoft's excellent entry Bloodborne. However, this has been a running problem of this console generation, with all consoles putting out very little in the way of software that warrants a purchase. Switch, the console which launched this year had a very strong start with Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, however, the PS4 promises to rapidly catch up with its release roster as The Last of Us 2 heads our way, along with a brand new Spiderman game that looks and feels exciting. <\/p>In the meanwhile, the PS4 also saw the release of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. While my issues with the game are more mechanical rather than it's gorgeous visuals, the fact remains that this is easily one of the best looking games you'll ever see. <\/p>However, looks aren't everything, it might get some great reactions early on but the only way to keep a game alive and strong for a long time is to have a healthy and fun gameplay, a matter which we will discuss at a later date. Let's just be hopeful that the upcoming Spiderman game does everyone's favourite webhead some justice. <\/p>The fact, however, remains that apart as of this moment, the PS4 has more promising games slated for release than any other home console, and that alone should warrant a purchase. <\/p>"},{"type":"img","id":"img-uid-1501339003040","data":"597ca23c24185"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1501339007320","data":"Cons: <\/b><\/p>Comparing the console with other competing home consoles, I really have to stretch to find faults. The Xbox One is great if you're a PC gamer as well, but if you hate the Microsoft store, then it is practically useless for you. With the Xbox One X launching soon, let us hope Microsoft manages to give stiff competition to Sony, which will encourage both companies to invest in good games, which in turn will obviously work in our favour. <\/p>The biggest complaint I have about the PlayStation 4 (and also the Xbox One for that matter) is that both the consoles try too hard to be compact PCs instead of being a unique console: something Nintendo manages to pull off every generation without fail. But then again, Nintendo's focus is on a completely different kind of gamer whereas Sony and Microsoft are what we can consider 'mainstream.'<\/p>The issue with home consoles trying to be PCs is the fact that they can never be as powerful as a PC because a PC is not a singular device, it is, to put it mildly, a vast ocean of possibilities, with more powerful parts arriving yearly to give the enthusiast a chance to push the very boundaries of gaming. Not only is it annoying, the fact that exclusives exist for a device so plain gives off the distinct feeling of it being hostage-ware: games being kept on the console solely for the reason of selling more units. <\/p>"},{"type":"img","id":"img-uid-1501339827550","data":"597ca257c83a0"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1501339829749","data":"Final Verdict:<\/b> <\/p>All being said, the PS4 has recovered from its slump and is all set to become a solid home console with excellent games coming to the system this year and the next. Not only does it trump the PS4 Pro with its practicality, I would go so far as to say the existence of the PS4 makes PS4 Pro obsolete for all but the privileged few among us who are lucky enough to own a 4K TV. <\/p>So yes, buy the PS4, you won't regret it. <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2vgvJ8d\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to purchase it! <\/a><\/p>"}]
