There are very few professions that allow you to directly impact a person's life and bring positive change through one's actions as much as law and being a lawyer does. With the world becoming smaller each and every day with constant innovations and faster air travel, it is important to acquaint oneself with international law. In times like these when there's a refugee crisis in the Middle East and our own backyard in Myanmar, and with tensions high across the world, it only seems right that we take the initiative to stand up for what's right.
That being said, here are a few reasons on why you should consider International Law
1. Mounting Tensions
With war, there are war crimes. The saying that history is written by the victor is true, because often we never hear about the atrocities committed by the winners. With the world on the brink of what seems to be another international conflict, students can enable themselves to become a symbol of justice in dark times.
2. Admiralty Law
Cruise ships are all fancy but they are subject to multiple international criminal and private laws. Ships are usually subjected to the laws according to the flag it flies on the mast, but often has a multi cultural crew, as such, international law sets the guidelines for all different nationalities and protects your rights on the high seas.
3. Laws Regarding Stateless Persons
The world is a little anti-refugee right now, although there are good people fighting for the cause, people who have no country too are subject to laws, and international law protects their rights. Take the Syrian crisis for example.
Another example is an excellent Tom Hanks movie called The Terminal, highly recommended.
4. Commercial Law
In this day and age of international trading, an Indian company having issue with a Korean one are subject to international laws as it is obviously not an internal issue that can be solved. These things happen more often than most people think.
5. Extradition Laws
With India hounding Vijay Mallya and trying to get him extradited from the United Kingdom, we understand why international law is important as they also deal with Extradition laws. There are complex laws between countries to return fugitives from their waters and land, and you can fight to bring them to justice.
