Screaming down the dark alley

She ran ahead with haste, the poor cally!

It seemed a daunting task, escaping the maze

And competing with those enjoying this cat and mouse chase.

NO! She hoarsely cried,

But the Pleas fell on deaf ears and thus justice was denied.

All she wanted to ask

Was which part of NO didn’t they understand?

With hands as rough as coarse sand,

They seemed quenched molesting her soul, Sadly, her they outmanned.

Kids are beautiful, one of the many reasons being they could be honest and happy even when you’re trying to be at the most serious level with them. You could put on a suit and tie and talk about North Korea’s relations with the south, while your kid walks in with all the swagger in the world, tagging along the toddler in the rocker, of course. So how de we, as a structured society, break them down from such honest pockets of joy into synchronised machines. Of apparent reliance and broken down innovation?

Is it the routine testing of memory and not intuitiveness? Or the knack of punishing those who step outside our borders of convention? Why do we stress on teaching generations after generations complex calculus and intensive biology and not allow a single soul inside our curriculum to explore their more creative side. Don’t get me wrong, not trying to undermine sciences or their importance in shaping a child, but, don’t you think, shaping into a mould isn’t the best way to promote new thinking? It would be foolish of me to assert that everyone finds these streams a burden. But one would be foolish to assume some do. Maybe those some really are one of a kind in terms of art or music or dance or poetry or storytelling or the list goes on and on and on.

This is where we need to make some changes to the system in place, we need to allow kids the freedom to do what they love and not force them into thinking the other way around. We need to give them the choice of doing arts at an early stage so that they don’t waste 10 years of a life trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

1) Make classes like painting and learning an instrument a part of the general curriculum and not something rich schools give their students as a commodity.

2) Invest in acquiring experts in the field of performing arts such as music or dance

3) Allow kids to make a choice of a certain activity that they want to be a part of

4) Give equal importance to these fields as those of public speaking and language

In a country where poets are lauded one day and blemished the next, we need more who understand art for what it is. A way of expression. An outlet of sorts for everything from sorrow to satire. Disciplines like dance and music can enhance the learning experience of any child. It can improve their social skills, and make them a more valued part of the community. We need the next generation to understand arts has always been an integral part of human civilization, and not something you do when you’re bad at math.

Schools have to be the ones who take the initiative in this context. Instead of totally focusing on scoring the highest in a class test, we need kids to breathe a little more of the artistic vibe. At the end of the road, it would be disheartening to see a director, a songwriter, a painter and a dancer trying to pass the semester. Here is an excerpt from an interview, from the book Epiphany

The school, in the '30s, wrote to her parents and said, "We think Gillian has a learning disorder." She couldn't concentrate; she was fidgeting. she went to see this specialist. So, this oak-paneled room, and she was there with her mother, and she was led and sat on this chair at the end, and she sat on her hands for 20 minutes while this man talked to her mother about all the problems Gillian was having at school. And at the end of it, because she was disturbing people; her homework was always late; and so on, little kid of eight. In the end, the doctor went and sat next to Gillian and said, "Gillian, I've listened to all these things that your mother's told me, and I need to speak to her privately." He said, "Wait here. We'll be back; we won't be very long," and they went and left her. But as they went out the room, he turned on the radio that was sitting on his desk. And when they got out the room, he said to her mother, "Just stand and watch her." And the minute they left the room, she said, she was on her feet, moving to the music. And they watched for a few minutes and he turned to her mother and said, "Mrs. Lynne, Gillian isn't sick; she's a dancer. Take her to a dance school."
I said, "What happened?" She said, "She did. I can't tell you how wonderful it was. We walked in this room and it was full of people like me. People who couldn't sit still. People who had to move to think." Who had to move to think. They did ballet; they did tap; they did jazz; they did modern; they did contemporary. She was eventually auditioned for the Royal Ballet School; she became a soloist; she had a wonderful career at the Royal Ballet. She eventually graduated from the Royal Ballet School and founded her own company -- the Gillian Lynne Dance Company -- met Andrew Lloyd Weber. She's been responsible for some of the most successful musical theater productions in history; she's given pleasure to millions; and she's a multi-millionaire. Somebody else might have put her on medication and told her to calm down.

Interviewing is a lot of work. You need to prep, make sure you've got a few resumes printed out, check to make sure your suit still fits, and so on and so forth. There's a few places you should check out before you head off to the interview, regardless of the position you're applying for.

1) Glassdoor:

Glassdoor is a multi-faceted website that offers some really great insights into companies. Not only do they post available jobs, they also give highlight benefits, salary ranges, and even interview questions! Make sure Glassdoor is a stop to make before you move any further in your hiring process.

Additional note: If you feel like Glassdoor doesn't provide as much as you'd hoped, check Indeed. While their collection isn't nearly as in-depth as Glassdoor, they tend to compliment Glassdoor quite well and typically have what Glassdoor doesn't. You can visit the website by clicking here.
2) LinkedIn interviewer profiles:
First, make sure your settings are set to private before creeping on the folks interviewing you. It's a great way to get a sense of the folks you'll be talking to. For example, their education, background, maybe some common subject areas (volunteer experiences, former employers, alumnae, etc.). Further, it also helps reinforce names with faces, which makes interviewing a more comfortable experience, especially if you're interviewing with a team of people. You can visit the website by clicking here.
3) The Company Website:
This might seem like a given, but that's not actually the case. While, as I've stated in the past, the primary goal of an interview is to make sure you're the right fit, it's also important to show that you know how to do research, and that you're actually invested in working for that specific company. It's a good way to help get a sense of whether or not it is actually the company you want to work for, and it gives you a chance to find some key data that can help you in discussing why you're a good fit for their company.
So there you go. three key websites to check out before you head off on your dream interview. Make sure your suit is ready to roll, your resume is looking perfect, and brush up on your interview skills. You're 90% of the way there, make sure you don't miss a beat! Let me be very clear with this right in the first line: I am not saying Arunabh Kumar is guilty, simply because it is not up to us to pronounce anyone guilty or not guilty, that is the job of the Judicial system, and should be left with them.

The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act was enforced on 9th December, 2013, which enables women to report instances of sexual harassment at their workplace, creating a system of redressal of complaints and also providing safeguards against false false or malicious complaints. Under the act, and from the pages of Wikipedia, the Act also covers concepts of 'quid pro quo harassment' and 'hostile work environment' as forms of sexual harassment if it occurs in connection with an act or behaviour of sexual harassment.

This means that a woman who files a sexual harassment complaint must be taken seriously and investigated internally via a committee, before proceeding further depending on the woman deciding to press charges or not.

Considering these rules and guidelines, one would be correct in raising a question about why, when an anonymous blog posted on Medium accusing TVF's founder Arunabh Kumar, the company itself released a statement instead of the man himself, and what a statement that was.

The biggest reason is their own safety. With all the "freedom" people assume to be entitled to on this day, it becomes an even worse day for women step out. Holi it seems gives people a license for a few days to grab you and touch the women while playing holi in a group. What worsens the situation is unlike other days, if women call for help, they will instead be considered a snob because considering it is Holi supposedly everything is ‘playful' even if it is groping. The festival raises a serious debate about consent. Why should the norms of consent change during the duration of the festival and harassment become something that is acceptable around the festival.
On taking offence on being touched without permission, women especially at workplaces and educational institutes are asked to "not spoil the fun". "Bura na mano Holi hai” becomes bullies' favourite get away phrase in the week preceding the festival of Holi as they throw dry color, water and water balloons at people without their consent and run away.

Holi, despite being a festival marked by the spirit of fun and frolic, can be a nightmare for people who do not wish to be dumped color on because they might be headed on to some important work, have allergies or just not like it for that matter. whatever the reason may be, if one does not choose to be a part of this hysterical celebration in the name of festivities, it becomes difficult for them to even get out their homes.

Ever wondered why the girls who played holi as a kid stopped being a part of the festivities as they grew up?

A large number of men go around drunk on streets and feel free to touch women (or anyone for that matter) to put color on them. women are subjected to this kind of "celebration" which is often accompanied by extreme sexualisation of the female body —the ‘fun’ of watching a woman’s body drenched with water and the overall pleasure of violation.

Indian families who have always believed in keeping their daughters "under control" to keep them safe instead of teaching their sons to behave themselves, ask their daughters to stay indoors on holi as it is "unsafe" outside. It's funny how I myself being a kid whose favourite festival was holi is now afraid to step out of my house because I am afraid to be thrown colors (and comments and glances) at by groups of drunk boys.

Festivals have always been about celebration of life and energy and making it consensual will help in saving the true essence of any festival which is spreading happiness and not violation of anyone's boundaries. :)

Pets are a part of your family, understood.

You choose to make them a part of your celebrations, understood.

But many do not understand the grave effect which the celebrations might have on them.

Most dog owners feel that as long as they use dry colors on their pets, there’s no harm. But the truth is, the presence of lead, which acts as an accumulative poison, makes these colors a high-risk material for pets. Inhalation of colour powder may cause nasal irritation and possibly respiratory allergy or infection.

With the Holi festival just around the corner and excitement building, it’s important to prepare so that companion and stray animals aren’t harmed during the festivities. Here are the top actions to take to keep animals safe and healthy this Holi:

• Know the facts.

The powders that are used during the festival are made with synthetic colors which contain toxic metals or dyes that can cause skin allergies, rashes or even blindness in people and animals. Animals can easily inhale the powder, which can cause nasal irritation and respiratory allergies or infections. Animals who ingest it while grooming themselves can suffer from stomach ailments or other illnesses or even die. Drinking water colored by the powder can also cause hair loss and dermatitis in dogs.

• Keep animals indoors.

Getting hit with colored powder or water isn’t fun for animals, who don’t understand what is happening and don’t enjoy getting powder or water in their eyes and noses. Keep animal companions indoors, and ensure that celebrations occur a safe distance away from stray animals.

• Teach children not to throw the powder or water balloons at animals.

Kids may not realise that this frightens and hurts animals.

• Create awareness in your area.

Ask housing associations or building managers to put up notices that remind tenants to keep their animal companions indoors during Holi and never throw the powder or water at animals.

• Watch out for community dogs and strays.

If an animal gets the powder in his or her eyes, quickly flush them out with clean water. If irritation persists, recruit the help of a veterinarian for medical care.

• Use shampoo to remove coloured powder from animals’ hair and fur.

A good gentle animal-friendly shampoo should get the powder out of an animal’s hair. Never use toxic kerosene, alcohol or hair oil.

• Keep Holi sweets out of animals’ reach.

Give dogs only canine-friendly treats this Holi. Ingredients like cream, chocolate and raisins can make them sick or even kill them.

This Holi, play it safe.

Do ensure however, that in either your love towards the street or pet animals you care for OR in your post-bhaang madness you don’t put the colourful, toxic, harmful, chemical laced powdered or liquid Holi colors onto the animals or birds.

You can wash the colors off, these animals and birds cannot do so, no matter how hard they try to.

Wishing you a happy and safe animal-friendly Holi, friends!
"}]
