They amaze me with their depth, insight and sheer force of personality and make me want to be as much like them as I can. Here's a list of the female characters I respect and adore.<\/p>"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1496731785488","data":"1.  Anne of Green Gables<\/b><\/p>My first encounter with this feisty little red head led me to believe that she was your typical bubbly, likable young protagonist. However, as the book progressed, the astonishing level of character development and her maturing into a smart, strong-willed, ambitious young woman gave me such joy! Anne goes from a hopeful, optimistic orphan girl with the most vivid imagination you've ever seen to a young, mature woman who works hard to achieve her dream of going to college without depending on the finances of her foster parents. This classic had made Anne (with an 'e' of course) the hero many, many young girls all over the world.<\/p>"},{"type":"img","id":"img-uid-1496735566310","data":"59365f9dc30a9"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1496732267735","data":"2. Pippi Longstocking <\/b><\/p>Another classic, this book is beloved by children everywhere for it lovable protagonist Pippi Longstocking. Pippi is as unconventional a little girl as you can get. She is the daughter of an ex-sailor, now tribal chieftain and lives alone far from him with her trusty pets, a horse and a monkey. She is freckled, uneducated, insanely rich (her dad sends her suitcases full of gold coins) and freakishly strong- strong enough to lift her horse one-handed. Pippi uses all the resources at her disposal to make children happy by buying them toys and musical instruments, teach mean and abusive adults a lesson by using her strength to give them a taste of her own medicine and through all this, her love for her two best friends, Tommy and Annika, shines through. You can't find a better role model to teach children to be kind, independent, strong and loving.<\/p>"},{"type":"img","id":"img-uid-1496735593432","data":"59365fb9e1327"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1496733214745","data":"3.  Minerva McGonagall<\/b><\/p>While her character in the well-known Harry Potter series is quite commendable in itself, I'm referring to her character in the most famous Harry Potter fanfic- Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. Her strict disciplinarian air is given so much more depth and she ends up being one of the few characters that manages to break out of the script and be self-aware. McGonagall is one of the few people that the Harry in that story cares about and has a handle on him. Her character evolution goes from being a stereotypical tough deputy-headmistress who the students are afraid of to a logical, understanding, self-aware character who only gets more respect for being so. It shows me that people, no matter how rigid, still have the capacity to change if they wish to.<\/p>"},{"type":"img","id":"img-uid-1496735674117","data":"593660091a323"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1496734512933","data":"4. Leslie Burke<\/b><\/p>The Bridge to Terabithia is an iconic movie, but few know that it was a book first. In both, Leslie Burke stands out as a striking young girl with a mind of her own. She opens up new worlds to the protagonist, Jesse, a boy from a family with limited means. She shows him how words and imagination can make your life so much more colourful and teaches him many more lessons besides. One particular exchange stands out in my mind. After Leslie beats Jesse in a race, he comments on how fast Leslie is for a girl. Leslie then asks Jesse why he can't just say the she was fast, which she was. Why did people have to tack on meaningless qualifiers to their statements? She's someone worth watching out for.<\/p>"},{"type":"img","id":"img-uid-1496735751188","data":"59366055dca37"}]
