Is being a girl means to spend her life in just four walls of her house ?

txt

The question above being asked because of the irrational and undesirable behaviors of men in and outside of homes, where every second girl has to face such situations daily in her routine life. This kind of unexpected behavior is know as sexual harassment.Sexual harassment includes inappropriate touchings, comments about your body, spreading rumours ,remarks, dirty jokes or stories, grabbing, rubbing ,pinching and many more.

txt

I would like to clear the situations which girls have to face at different places by giving a true example, which I experienced. One day when my college was finished I took a bus like millions of others do.I was comfortable being travelling alone because I'm the only one coming to college from far place.Even when I was a child,I was sent alone to stationery and to bring groceries from the market, whereas other girls of my age were not allowed to do that. So,I was standing in the bus as usual the bus was full of passengers.Suddenly I felt like someone was touching my hands and making weird sounds.I thought that I was in the girls section so someone might be chi-chatting and that to the bus was full. After 15 minutes I still felt the same. Then I turned back and saw one guy was standing back of me and he gave a weird smile.I was feeling uncomfortable,I didn't said anything to him and went away from there. Then I went and stood near the bus driver's seat, there also he came and asked me "dhiguthara"("would you like to get off the bus").I was frightened and I said yes and I got off the bus.I took another bus and I sat .After 5 minutes the same guy came and stood near me and he was touching inappropriately.I was very angry and I asked "what is your problem?Don't you have sister's at home?" And then I complained to the conductor. He slapped him and warned him strictly. And everyone in the bus scolded him and threw him out off the bus.

txt

Through this what I want to say is that if I was able to scold him in the first bus,the he wouldn't come to the second bus and to this to me.Every second girl in the world has to face such situations daily.Sexual harassment is illegal. If a girl is being harassed then she need not to be afraid but try to fight against it and get the harassed punished. If she is being sexually harassed then she should tell Some one who could help her as I did.

txt

Ever since the gruesome rape and murder of a Hyderabad based veterinarian came to light, social media has been abuzz with a wide range of reactions with some calling for immediate death penalty to the rapists and others talking about the rape culture in this country and yet others blaming it on one particular religion without any semblance of common sense.

While these knee-jerk reactions are just that, without any impact whatsoever on the status quo, the most disturbing posts on social media are the ones who call the rape right, who say women also enjoy being raped, who say rape isn’t the fault of men as it is the women who arouse them, etc. These are the minds that are responsible for propagating the rape culture in my country.

txt
rich_1575379757888

What is it about people of my gender that makes us think that a woman exists only for my sexual pleasure? Why are women seen as conquests? If you are reading this, you are most likely a college student and you and your friends would have most likely looked at a woman in your college who fits the societal standards of beauty and thought to yourself “arei ii pori kirrak undi ra, dinni esinodiki masthu sukham” or some nonsense like that. Why am I able to say these words here? It is because these are the words I kept hearing in college around me and I don’t think the situation is any different now. Just the choice of words here speaks a lot about the way all of us think. It is ‘pori ni eyyadam’ and not consensually making love to her. It again treats a woman like an object of conquest.

txt
rich_1575379757889

As I write this, a lot of memories keep flooding into my head. I was in a corporate college 12 years ago, doing my intermediate. There, one lecturer, who most likely was a father of a teenager himself, told the all-boys class that it is okay to comment at a random girl on the roads as the girls themselves like that. I wondered then and I wonder now as to who informed this gentleman that women like being commented and catcalled upon roads, which is conveniently termed eve-teasing. Though I knew it was wrong, I didn’t tell him but I would like to tell him now that it is sexual harassment.

Another instance that pops up into my head happened in that college. I was sitting next to a window in a classroom and there was one guy next to me, looking at a woman walking on the road below. She was wearing a burqa with only her hands visible and this guy next to me said “look at her hands” and was visibly aroused just by the sight of her hands.

txt
rich_1575379757890

There was yet another instance when I spoke to a rapist, who told me that women wear revealing clothes (in his definition, a short sleeved kurti without a dupatta was revealing) and arouse men and if a woman is willing to be physically involved with her romantic partner without being married to him, what problem should she have if someone wants to rape her. This rapist didn’t even realise that he countered his own point when he said “physically involved with her romantic partner”. His oxymoronic words just left me stunned.

Women are just objects of sexual desire and nothing else, for many men here. Women are also to be blamed for men being aroused, according to these very men. I would like to ask what a toddler who was raped did to arouse someone or what a random woman wearing a burqa walking by on the road did something to arouse a teenager sitting several floors above her in a building that she probably didn’t even think of or what a woman minding her own business in a college canteen did to warrant lusty eyes looking at her.

txt
rich_1575379757891

It is that mindset that needs to change. Till then, rapes will not stop. Period.

Because this is stuMagz that I am writing this on, I personally request every student that is reading this to do your part to ensure women in our country are safe. Sensitise yourself and sensitise people around you.
"}]
A gruesome and saddening incident happened last week that left me sleepless and worried about where we are headed to. A young veterinarian was brutally gang-raped, smothered and her body was burnt alive on a road on the outskirts of Hyderabad, in an incident that is being termed by some media houses as Hyderabad's Nirbhaya case. I will not go into the details of the case as it has been extensively covered in many media outlets but what I do want to talk about is the questions this incident brought up to my mind and I want to raise those questions.

The accused rapists (three of whom are less than 21 years old) were reportedly intoxicated on alcohol and my question here is, why does a scenario exist where someone younger than the legal drinking age can buy alcohol? Yeah, some are saying that alcohol should be banned but that will open up a whole new can of worms altogether (which I don't want to go into now) but the main question is, why do underage people have access to alcohol? Why hasn't the license of the alcohol shop where these people acquired it, been cancelled after this?

Another question I want to raise is to the people who are reacting on this issue on social media. While the ones who are giving knee-jerk reactions and conducting candle-light vigils are not doing anything apart from just doing that, the biggest concern here is about the ones who are saying that the girl deserves to be raped or the rape isn't wrong or whichever form of victim blaming that many in our country are known for doing. Why isn't there a sensitisation among rural youth, especially blue-collar workers (who, coincidentally, were the section of society that perpetrated the 2012 Delhi rape case)?

There are also a section of people who are saying it is because there was a muslim guy among the accused that it happened. Why is there an unnecessary selective rage that doesn't make any sense? And to all the ones who are reacting on social media and are being arm-chair-activists, I would like to ask if they did anything to sensitise the men around them?

When I talk about sensitisation, I believe it is the most crucial thing that needs to be done apart from changing the law to give out quick justice. Punishment already exists but it stopped being a deterrent, if the increase in the number of rape cases is anything to go by. The government should probably conduct awareness and sensitisation sessions in rural areas and students can do their part by volunteering to conduct such sessions in villages near colleges at the very least.

Colleges on their part, can and should conduct gender sensitisation sessions for students right in the first year itself.

As the Gandhian quote goes, be the change that you want to see in the world and let's all work towards making this a better, safer place for women.

Sports require dedication, toughness and resilience but of all sports, combat sports need these three a lot more than any other sport. Boxers need it more so and Salman aka Sunny is just 13 years old but his tenacity and his dedication to the sport have bagged him three state titles and he is currently on his way to bagging Nationals. At a cursory look at him doesn't give away that he's a fighter but when he enters the ring, it is a different story altogether and he turns into this aggressive fighter whose only aim is to win.

What makes his story even more intriguing and inspiring is his family background as he comes from an economically backward family - his father worked as a gate watchman when he started boxing.

It all started for him when he watched a Pawan Kalyan movie where the Powerstar plays the role of a boxer. "Three years ago, when I was in my 5th class, I watched that movie and if fascinated me. I wanted to take up boxing and I just knew it that I wanted to pursue the sport. Thankfully, my father (pictured below) agreed to let me learn it despite me being just 10 years old back then and despite our family position," shares Sunny.

Sunny then started learning boxing at Saroornagar Indoor Stadium and his senior Gouni Kumar shares, "We were training there when we saw this little boy come. His dedication to the sport left us in awe and that is why we decided to train him ourselves, regardless of whether he could afford coaching or not."

Owing to his financial background, even being able to afford the proper nutrition required for a boxer was a tough challenge for him and that is why, Kumar and his friends ensured Sunny was trained by them enough to qualify for the coaching at Sports Authority of India (SAI) hostel in Aurangabad, as Kumar shares, "It costs about Rs. 8000 a month for proper nutrition and there was no way his family could afford it. That is why we ensured he was trained enough to clear the SAI selections and he worked very hard to get through it." To this, Sunny adds, "It was a massive boost for me, getting into SAI as I get proper nutrition and training there."

At SAI Aurangabad, Sunny has a gruelling training schedule which includes strength and conditioning training, technique training in addition to having regular sparring sessions every week. "We start training at 5 am and it starts with 25 rounds of running around the track before heading to the training centre for a few hours of training. Coach sir trains all of us in various technicalities of boxing in addition to involving techniques that improve our reflexes and skill," shares the 8th class student of ZPHS Saroornagar.

After moving to SAI hostel a year ago, he started training hard for Under-14 nationals and he is currently taking part in the 65th National School Games Boxing tournament in Haryana and this makes it the fourth time that Sunny is taking part in a National level tournament.

His is a story that stuMagz hopes will inspire many students to take up their passion and pursue it despite everything that stands in the way.

This was a year of happenings in the little flower degree college. Right from the beginning of the semester, there were a lot of events that took place.

FRESHERS

The year started with a bang and that was welcoming the newbies into college by hosting the annual fresher's party. A day filled with laughter, joy, and warmness this united the seniors and juniors there was dancing, games, food and lots of conversations. AKA traditional family-style welcome.

That was the dawn of the many occurrences that took place

BASKETBALL EVENT

Basket tournament at LFDC was a grand success we had over 18 colleges participating, this event lifted our competition spirit, The audience was on the tip of their chairs cheering for their favorite team.

TEACHER'S DAY

The day when everything was reversed or like some of the stranger thing’s fans would say the day of the upside-down.

To mark the relevance of this day the students got to enact and play the role of their favorite teacher.

Each student was assigned a class and had to teach and impart their knowledge on the subject, this tricky activity embarked upon us the relevance of a good teacher and the hard work and effort that goes into teaching. the day continued by the student council who hosted some amazing programs including dances, mimes, skits and even had a fun little activity for all the teachers.

The teachers were great sports through the entire event and gave us their 100 percent participation.

FRANCE VISIT

We had a group of French students visit our college and this gave us an insight into the French culture and we had the opportunity to display our culture in the form of dances, songs, and fun games to make our guests feel welcome.

The French students performed a beautiful ballet dance which left us in awe watching them perform so gracefully.

The above mentioned are a few of the many events that took place in the Little Flower Degree College.

"}]
If you're reading this, you're most likely writing your semester exams and I am positive that many of you are gearing up towards attempting the GRE, to pursue your Master's abroad. In my experience, students usually take the GRE in the even semester and that is why I am writing this today. Even if you are a first-year student, what I write below will be very useful to you, in fact a lot useful as you have a lot of time to arm yourself with the know-how of cracking the GRE.

After my first job at Infosys and prior to me starting my entrepreneurial journey, I was a GRE trainer and I used to train students for the verbal. Based on that experience of mine, I can definitively say that GRE Prep shouldn't be started prep as prep for an exam. It should be a journey rather. When it comes to the Quant, it is just about doing as many practice tests as possible if you are weak at math but if you are already good at math, it is very easy to crack as going by the Indian standards of math, the GRE math is very simple.

Then comes the verbal and in my experience, it is all about reading books and not just books, reading whatever you comes your way to build your vocabulary right from the beginning. Vocabulary can be improved in different ways, one needs to choose what suits him/her and I personally suggest usage of words in sentences is very important. I used to read The Hindu newspaper from my second standard and I used to write down the words I didn't know and learn their meanings before attempting to use them in my own sentences. I used to find it tough to do when I was a child but I am definitely reaping the benefits now.

When it comes to improving the vocabulary, as I said earlier, framing own sentences using those words and trying to find new words from a thesaurus will help. Other techniques like root words, one word substitutions can be learnt from Norman Lewis's word power made easy.

Just remember, GRE prep is a marathon, not a 100 metre sprint. Approach it like that and ace it.
"}]
