March 8 is observed as International Women's Day and social media saw a lot of buzz about it, with cheesy posts wishing women a happy women's day and more but there's a lot of underlying sexism even in these messages. Many of the messages are subtle indications of the behavioural expectations and standards that are imposed on women. All this, made me think whether women's day is really a day to celebrate and be 'happy' about or whether the very existence of a "women's day" is questionable, as it shows shows the failure to give equal respect, status, stature and freedom to women - half the world's population.

There have been several instances throughout the ages that prove my above statement but more recently, a Delhi student, Gurmehar Kaur, was the subject of rape threats and more because she took one stance against an issue. What bothers me here is the fact that a 20 year old student was threatened with rape just because of her political views and if it were a male, then the sexual-assault would definitely had not been one of the threatening aspects. This incident clearly highlights how women are perceived in our society and how sexual assault is used as a threat, as a lesson-teacher and more.

And right on women's day, i.e. yesterday, members of a religious political outfit attacked couples in Kochi, in a freak incident that creepily reminded everyone of the 2009 Mangalore pub incident. While women were not beaten up yesterday (the way they were beaten up in 2009 in Mangalore), the very fact that they were threatened with violence by armed goons shows how we have failed as a species to give safety and security to half the population. The icing on sugar here is the presence of cops, who are clearly seen in the video showing the incident; but who don't do anything to protect the innocent youngsters (who are most likely students).

Raising a simple question here, when will we achieve equality in all aspects for both genders?
"}]
A Local Area Network on LAN for short was first proposed sometime around the year 1993. It was not termed as Wireless Hotspot until much later, but there was an understanding of how this tech could go wireless. They just called it Wireless LAN. As an engineering student myself, I can’t even begin listing how many times WLAN has come in handy for me. And I’m sure it has come to the rescue of almost all students in general. Don’t know what I’m talking about?

Ok let’s begin by understanding how a WLAN or a hotspot actually works because most of you might start using it less after the 31st. At the risk of sounding like your run off the mill computer science nerd, I’m going to talk about the infrastructure of these networks. Right off the bat, there are 3 main types of WLAN infrastructures,

1) Ad Hoc or P2P:

In this structure, a network has stations which communicate only peer to peer. In a Wi-Fi P2P group, the group owner operates as an access point and all other devices are clients. This usually works out when the devices are in close range of the transmitting network.

2) Bridge:

A wireless Ethernet bridge allows the connection of devices on a wired Ethernet network to a wireless network. The bridge acts as the connection point to the Wireless LAN.

3) Wireless Distribution System:

This system allows wireless interconnection between various source providers. Connections between clients is made by using MAC addresses instead of IP assignments. This requires all the base stations to be tuned into the same radio frequency or channel and share a password if equipped. This system is usually used in router to router configurations where each base point works to amplify or extend the signal input.

Still don’t see how hotspots help you as a student? A few examples maybe will help,

Notes are essential to any student life and realistically and not all students, let’s say, are eager to write during a lecture. One revolutionary method our generation has taken up to bypass this note taking tradition is by taking pictures or scanned pdfs from the poor souls who are attentive enough. Yes, the time of the Xerox copies is a thing of the past. The future is now old man. But there’s one tiny problem. The transfer of these files from person to person. Admittedly, we could still use services like a messenger to send or receive these images but, one way better alternative is to use applications on your mobile like Xender, ShareIt etc. which work on creating a local hotspot using your phones inbuilt tethering service to transfer files without ever using the internet. This mechanism allows for very high speeds which we all love.

Let’s be honest here, almost everyone of us has been guilty of asking that one friend with unlimited 4g data pack to just leave his WiFi-hotspot on for hours on end just so that we can have our Facebook feed popping all during the day. In the settings of your Android phone, you can actually set the no. of users that can connect to your tethered hotspot and also control the bandwidth. (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz)

In our addiction to have competitive gaming possible at all possible time and place, game developers have built in certain mechanics to satisfy our need to assert dominance, however stupid that dominance might seem. Some common games which use a local hotspot to give competitive player vs player experience are Mini Militia, Badlands, Crossy Road and few arcade games like Chess and Checkers. And who can deny major league WLAN gaming like Dota2 and CounterStrike events which include hundreds of gamers to be on the same platform to improve the competitive atmosphere on the whole.

Even the messaging apps have begun rolling out local texting, or offline chat as they like to call it, which pretty much uses the same concept of a local WLAN to allow transfer of everything from messages, pictures and movies right from your conversation screen. Although this might seem trivial, who wouldn’t take up an opportunity to reduce on data usage once the free internet dies off.
"}]
Days pass

Hours go by

Nothing remains still.

But certain things remain still. Amidst all one is "non fitting", when you don't fit in anywhere. A sudden fear, uninvited pain and cry. That drooping and glum face of mine terrifies certainly.

I start thinking because its really thought-provoking. I try not to engage myself, but I push myself to be involved in it. Twist and turn, arrive. Weird feeling rises so, as uselessness. Unable to find anything. Jumping into conclusion at that moment is the silliest as ever.

Reason? What are the reasons of my "non fitting" or why don't I fit anywhere and anything? No answers come out from anywhere. Everywhere just questions : Endless questions. It is as if I'm surrounded by "Questions"=" Q" not Air or Wind. Wind soothes me but not these Q's. It suffocates me instead.

Remedy is one only - attempting something. Like "try", try to fit. Starting of different ways. Ah! Here starts my plight, human's plight. Unending unfathomable undeniable unavoidable.

When nothing comes out, out of these tryings I stop the attempts and search of it. My mind starts fumbling and my thoughts take a place to sit calmly. They start panicking and sometimes they stop being melancholic. They just accept the reality so am I!

And I finally understand that this is reality and going with it is the source of my happiness. Although there's no remedy for this because when you know " When you don't fit anywhere"
"}]
For as long as I can remember I’ve had an overwhelming love for books and reading. The presence of fiction and storytelling in my life from an early age helped ignite my imagination and passion, and for that I will always be grateful.

Now, here I am about to enter in my twenties and still just as obsessed with reading books. That’s how you’ll see me spending any scrap of free time I might have; with my face shoved into a book. I love the smell of the pages; I love the stories; I’m just a book junkie.

There’s nothing wrong with loving books and being passionate about stories. In fact, if you ask me there are several perks to being an avid reader:

1. You’ll Always Be Entertained

I think one of my favourite things about reading is that I always have a way to entertain myself. Having a book handy is one of the easiest ways to alleviate boredom.
If you’re stuck at the airport because of delays, you have a book.
You’re waiting for the train or bus, you have a book.
It’s a convenient, fun way to keep yourself busy.

2. You can write

Most writers read, and plenty of die-hard readers, write. Hanging with great literature is sure to up your own writing chops, and good writing has a way of working its way into your head.

3. You’re Constantly Learning

Whether the book is fiction, fantasy or historical, you are always learning. The beauty of stories is that you are presented with a different plot, conflict and characters almost every time and it provides a great deal of insight.

Instead of texting or mindlessly searching the Internet (even though it’s incredibly entertaining) reading is a much more productive use of your time. Social media induces so much FOMO, but reading just generates a new way of thinking and understanding. There’s really no down side.

4. Reading Gives Perspective

In today’s society it’s too easy to be consumed by our own lives and stay in our sheltered bubbles. But, by reading I believe that we get the opportunity to live many lives in a sense through the words we devour and getting to see the stories of others. This helps us understand people by giving us the potential to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes.

5. You Can Get In Touch With Your Creative Side

Reading is an awesome way to get in touch with your creative side. I’m always complaining about how I wish I was artistic, my art skills are pretty pitiful, but this is a great alternative to being creative.

You can completely immerse yourself in the characters shoes and understand their story from a perspective you may have never thought of. Rather than being physically creative, this is a way to be mentally creative.

Who knows, maybe this could even encourage you to create your own book or stories.

6. You Understand People

Remember what I said about being able to place yourself in the character’s shoes? This really gives you a better sense of other people’s lives, decisions and feelings. Of course, you don’t physically know the character but you definitely form a mental connection and this provides insight into another person’s world.

Just because they’re a character in a book, does not mean that this same person does not exist elsewhere in the physical world. The stories you come to understand are ones that people all over the world have probably experienced. Take these stories to heart because it will end up helping you.

The more you come to learn and see, the better you understand the world around you. Of course we might always not agree with someone’s behavior or choices but being exposed to the stories allows us to comprehend the diversity of humans.

7. Reading increases your vocabulary

When you read a book aloud, you are more likely to pick up new words and learn to pronounce them properly. In a generation where we use so few of the many good words in the English language, adding more words to our vocab is never a bad thing! Of course, reading aloud has many other benefits. That’s just one of them!

8. It’s Relaxing

I have also used reading as a way to relax. I’ve found it really helpful for the times when falling asleep is difficult or if I’m feeling a little anxious. There’s something really soothing about curling up in your bed with a good book. I believe that reading takes your mind off any stress or problems you’re experiencing in your life and helps you focus on something more positive.

It’s almost a way of just being present and enjoying the moment because all you’re thinking about is the story. You’re so caught up in what’s happening to the character that it’s pretty hard to think about things bothering you at work, or in your social life.

Reading is my first love. I don’t remember a time in my life where it wasn’t my favourite thing to do. I can spend hours on end lost in stories, with the world around me just disappearing. And truth be told, the fact that I’m a bookworm is one of my favorite things about myself, thanks to these above mentioned reasons.
"}]

This gives you the right amount of proteins, minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates and fats that your body will need to stay fit.

When did you start playing chess?

I started playing chess when I was seven years old and started playing in the national level a couple of years later.

How does your typical day go? What do you do when you have to prepare for a tournament?

On a typical day, I exercise for an hour in the morning and later I work on chess the entire day. I do take a day off sometimes but physical fitness and chess practice is what I put emphasis on most of the time.

What are the best moments of your chess career?

There are many best moments in my career so far, every moment was special at that point of time, but if I have to pick a few, I would say the under-14 World Championship in 2004 is the most special on for me, because that was my first gold medal; and also, when I won the World Juniors in 2008, I was elated. Winning the bronze medal in the Asian games was also special for me but receiving the Arjuna Award was what made me feel as if I'm on top of the world!

Has chess shaped how you see this world?

While chess hasn't directly changed or affected my worldview, the opportunity to travel that I got from Chess, has definitely changed my perspective. Chess made me travel across the world and explore different cultures and places and that, has contributed greatly towards making me the person that I am now.

What do you do in your free time? Any hobbies in particular?

I watch movies and serials, I love listening to music, I am into reading a lot of biographies. I also love cooking!

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

I want to be the top ranking player in the world. I know it is a big thing but I am confident and will work towards it.

To students who want to play chess, both professionally and casually, what would you tell them?

In general I would suggest everyone to play chess as a brain-exercise and then they can decide for themselves whether to play professionally or just like hobby. I personally have experienced it and also seen it in others and it is also a proven fact that chess increases ones brain power and is also useful to perform well at studies.I suggest everyone to try chess and try working on it at some point of time and later decide about whether or not to take it up professionally.
"}]

Music:

Ms Ivaturi Jagadamba, today stands proud as the principal of Vidyadhari School of Music which specializes in Carnatic classical music, Visakhapatnam. According to Ms Jagadamba, patience, perseverance and hard-work helped her stand where she is. Raised in Anakapalle, Jagadamba was interested in music from the tender age of 3 and her father encouraged her to learn. Soon, the years passed and she was enrolled in Bachelor of Arts in Music, and she firmly says that changed her life, for good. Along with learning music and pursuing her graduation, life gave her marriage and pregnancy along with which, there were some hardships financial and otherwise, which drove Jagadamba to a point of almost giving up. But, she relented on, and here she stands proud. She draws energy and inspiration from her maternal grandmother, who till the age of 60 knit woolen dolls, sweaters and caps and sold them to be able to afford gifts for Jagadamba and her cousins. In that generation, her grandmother served as the municipal counsellor and stood tall, literally and otherwise; she was 6-footer. Strength and independence were what Jagadamba learnt and inherited. Started on 14 October, 2013 by one of her students, today the school has 5 teachers and 110 students, the youngest of who is 3 years and can recognize and differentiate the various Raagas. Her only principle is to not hurt anyone. And one issue that bothers her is sexual harassment of women, across age groups. She believes the offenders shouldn’t be excused, no matter what.

In trying to battle this, Nandita firmly believes that they are trying to intervene at the societal level. Ultimately, those in a society are those who are a part of the workplace. Nandita says, “a workplace can be a school, college, office, shopping mall or even our own homes are workplaces for our domestic helps.” “In a formal setting, we have a law against SHW, but the main issue is the informal workspaces like construction workers, garment company workers, trade unions and so on.” Only by initiating a dialogue and having a conversation, Nandita says can attitudes be influenced and changed. “It is attitudes which need to change.” Nandita loves the conversations she has with men and women from various formal and informal settings. Nandita also says it is extremely important to talk to men and boys, women are already aware of the issues, men and boys need to be sensitized against these issues to be able to influence change and behavior. Identity she believes, is extremely important for women, not limited to wives, mothers, sisters and daughters. Writing:

Vaikhari Aryat is a PhD Scholar at University of Hyderabad. A Dalit, queer woman, she stands proud of her identity, as a woman and as a writer. The journey was not an easy one, from being a young school girl bullied for writing to the social media jeers and other forms of bullying to today as a woman whose words at the time of Rohith Vemula struggle, have reached the Telangana State Assembly. Upon asking her why she writes, her answer is simple. She writes for the many women like her, to help establish an identity. She is not afraid of being judged, hated or bullied. She will continue to write and to represent. She firmly believes she could reach out to a lot of people within her community through her writing.Quoting her, “Today, after about 6 years later, I see a growth in the percentage of Dalit, Bahujan, Adivasi, Muslim women who speak up on various issues, from various standpoints. I think that is the cue for better change. The way these voices being raised above all the violence they encounter on a daily basis is the sign of a better space evolving. It declares women are not a homogeneous category. She quotes Ambedkar for the younger fraternity, ''Educate, organize and agitate; have faith in yourself””

Activism:

Arpita Jaya, a PhD Scholar from University Of Hyderabad, is a well-known activist on the social issues of caste and gender. Having chosen to stand up and fight these issues right when she was a student, Arpita stands as an inspiration to a lot of younger women and girls in the university. Her own experience of being sexually harassed at a very young age left a mark on her and later when she joined the university, she realized many women share the same anger that she felt against discrimination and harassment. Having started her struggle for women and marginalized communities, Arpita sees herself continuing to stand up and fight for people’s rights. ‘’There are countless women embedded in the pages of history who have fought relentlessly for the position we have in society today. It is our responsibility to take the torch and march ahead together to work towards bringing a revolutionary change in society,” says the activist, and adds, “Relentless struggle alone will break the existing systems of caste and patriarchy. The onus of the struggle to be bold for change does not lie on women alone. It is a collective responsibility, for a just and humane society. ”

When it comes to women, often to chase their dreams, they have to break stereotypes and fight off societal expectations and gender roles set for them by faceless entities who's suggestions are followed blindly without consideration. This story is common for nearly every woman who choses the road less traveled.

On the surface, it would appear that in a cricket crazy nation like ours, even the women's Cricket team would get widespread fame and recognition, however ask anyone who the current captain of wicketkeeper of the Indian Cricket Team is, chances are you'll get your reply in a snap. The same can't be said for the Women's Cricket Team.

Meet Ravi Kalpana, a 20 year old woman from Vijayawada who happens to be the Indian Women's Cricket Team's Wicket Keeper. Coming from a humble background, Kalpana speaks with stuMagz about her roots and her journey as a cricketer.

"I've always been interested in sports and games, but never really got an opportunity to actually play all that much," says Ravi Kalpana, "I remember it was in Class 7, on Children's Day, we had many sports events in our school. There was the 100 to 200 meter dash, in which I finished first."

"Eventually, someone came around and asked if anyone in the class would be interested in playing Cricket, and I'm thinking, hey, I enjoy sports so why not raise my hand, and I did. There was no turning back after that" she smiles.

Since then, Ravi Kalpana has played for in South Zone division for the Under 16 team, the Under 19 team in 2011 when she played a One Day match for the first time, then in 2012, for India Green Team, to Senior South Zone team in 2014, before finally being selected for the Indian Women's Cricket Team in 2015. This fantastic journey, however, was not without difficulties.

"There was a time I stopped playing altogether, because we couldn't afford to. Buying kits was not cheap, since my father is an auto driver," she says, "But I've had to support of my wonderful coaches throughout my career. Coach Srinivas Reddy convinced my family to let me continue playing and to not worry about the expenses."

Ravi Kalpana is pursuing her B.Com from Nalanda Degree College in Vijayawada, and is of the first generation of her family to be educated. "I'm always playing a sport or a game all the time, I don't really sit idle," she says, "most of the friends I have right now are the friends I made playing cricket, so when we get together to talk, we're mostly talking about cricket, games and how a match went. My parents feel really happy about this, however. It still feels amazing when someone comes up to my parents and says, hey isn't that your girl who's playing for India, and it makes them happy. I'm glad I have an opportunity to represent my country through Cricket" she concludes.

Ravi Kalpana is one such story from a country full of stories about women breaking out of the mould and making a name for themselves. Here's to many more years and trophies to the Indian Women's Cricket Team, for setting an example and being exceptionally skilled at this game the whole country stands still to watch.
"}]
