Christmas is time for family, even in our country where kids are given holidays and asked to run around the house and make some noise but if you've lived with kids you basically know that they'll bring the house down if left free. What better way then, to distract the little tykes from their penchant of destruction than to put on movies on the giant TV you bought and sit down to watch it together? Here's a list of my top 5 favourite Christmas movies for the whole family, starting at Number 5

5. A Christmas Story

Released in 1983, this adorable comedy of a young kid trying to convince everyone from his teachers at school, parents at home and even Santa Claus that a BB Gun would be the perfect gift for him on Christmas. The sequence of events that are kickstarted afterwords is one of the best Christmas comedies ever made.

4. The Nightmare Before Christmas

The animated flick that went on to become a classic of Christmas movies list, The Nightmare Before Christmas went on to also make Tim Burton's style of story telling famous around the world. Released in 1993, it is now considered a classic and a staple of Christmas Movie Time.

3. It's A Wonderful Life

This movie has a special place in my heart, specially because it was written before American involvement in the Second World War and the movie made and released the year after the war ended, setting the tone for the future of the world with a heartfelt movie which is now considered the most loved movie in America and also a Christmas time staple. While there are some elements that may not translate as well into Indian context, this 1946 film is still a must watch.

2. Home Alone

Who doesn't love Home Alone? I'm yet to meet a single person that thinks Home Alone is a bad movie. It is the pinnacle of Christmas Movies, where one young but extremely resourceful boy is left behind by his family by accident and the boy is left fending off two determined robbers using every trick up his sleeve. I've grown up watching Home Alone and it remains just as hilarious as it was back then. A must watch!

1. Die Hard

Yippie Ka Merry Christmas.

Bruce Willis's claim to fame, one of the most iconic action films ever made and also now considered the quintessential Christmas movie despite its very adult themes which are completely not suitable for children, Die Hard routinely finds itself at the number 1 position of many Christmas time movies list around the world. Watch the rest of the list with your family, but watch this one on your own or with friends. Die hard, baby!

The cold night air witnessed his mood swings from a face with fright to a smiley at the instant it cleared the fog. The moon lit her hair with his divine light. She stammered in a low pitch “sure of this?”

“Yes!” he whispered in an excited voice.

As soon as the frozen legs started moving their eyes ceased blinking to capture their fresh look of the ever so forbidden road. The birds resting on the trees right of the road woke up startled to hear the beats of two pride fueled human hearts. The road glittered in the shower of moonlight.

Her periodic suspicious lookbacks made the sweetheart squirrels to stop their gameplay and run towards their homes. “They look so… happy out here, that’s totally weird!” “It’s simply because they are not taught to be afraid of ghosts,” he answered. “You mean like us?” she broke through. He continued “They don’t even know what a ghost is. It’s us, the only race on earth that is afraid of ghosts.”

They continued straight down the long road. The air breezing past them brought out tremors in their body. The faintly visible giant structure of concrete not so far away increased their beat rates. They hurried to have a look at it. The cracked concrete walls bled green fungi. Bats sheltered in the curved corners. The tiny threads which came out of a spider’s body decorated the building artfully. It was just the place that would scare a person out of his soul. “I have heard of this!” she spoke slowly. “It’s a bit long and interesting too” she stopped hoping he would ask her to continue. He smiled saying “we have all the time.”

Machine learning is a method of data analysis that automates analytical model building. It is a branch of artificial intelligence based on the idea that machines should be able to learn and adapt to experience. With unprecedented advancement in this field, we're now able to quickly and automatically produce models that can analyze bigger, more complex data and deliver faster, more accurate results – even on a very large scale. Which is why it has now become a must-have skill. Our college, CMRCET has thus taken the initiative to enhance and widen our students' knowledge in this particular subject by hosting a guest lecture by Mr V Rao Vemuri, Professor of Computer Science from University of California, Davis. In his interview taken by the team of stumagz, he talked about his experience in machine learning, what inspired him throughout and what are the available resources for the students to learn and practice machine learning.

Q: What motivated you to learn machine learning?• It came naturally to me. Machine learning is no different than problem-solving and as an Engineer I always tried to find solutions to whatever problems that I came across. Later people started calling this process as machine learning. So you see, I have been learning machine learning even before the term came into the picture.

Q: You mentioned different fields of machine learning like driver field and algorithms. Which field are you associated with? Are you a programmer?• I'm not a programmer. I can write programs but there are people who can do better than me. I'm good at mathematics. I'm good at taking a problem and figuring out the best way to solve that problem. And then I take the end result to someone who can write the program for it.

Q: As you have mentioned there are 11 areas in machine learning and we can master any one of them, so are there any resources to get into it?• Of course. My recommendation is that you use your college as a resource. The college has computing facilities. You can make a group of 4 to 5 people and each one of them with complementing talents. Like someone is good at programming, someone is good at mathematics and someone has good managing skills. You can make your own website where you can upload programs for the college and make it useful to people. Specialise in any one area and don't worry about repeating what someone else has already done. You are just students and there's nothing wrong with it. You should always think about how you can do that thing in a better way.

Always remember, the first invention is not successful. Everyone fails in the beginning because they cannot figure out all the aspects. After failing in few attempts you come up with a package that is better than the previous one. You build a system here and make it available to the people. If they complain about it, you work on it and come up with a solution and make it better. Make the website and leave the legacy in the college so that even the batches after you can work on it. In this way, you will be able to produce something that people are willing to use. And like this, you'll get ideas on your own. You all have that ability and just have to work hard and be prepared because only a person with prepared mind can identify the opportunities coming his

Technology changes almost every day and one cannot use yesterday's technology for today's work. And as engineering students, we need to be updated with latest trends and methods. Thus, there are a lot of guest lectures being organised in our college for the students to learn new things apart from the regular subjects.

On the occasion of Sir Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad birth anniversary i.e. on 11th November celebrated National Education Day by ISTE Student Chapter (TL-181) in our college Mr.Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad was the first education minister of Independent India.

As a part of the event Chief Guest Prof M. L. Sai Kumar, Prof and Dean at Institute of Public Enterprise, has recalled Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s contribution towards nation building and in the field of education. He advised students not only to achieve higher education degree but also be adequately adept in the chosen field so that people recognize you by your competence, not by your family, religion or area.

All the dignitaries gave their valuable message and views regarding education and development of an individual with education.
"}]
Much like little children, no matter what our biological age is, we look forward to certain occasions as a time for a makeover (emotionally and physically), and the New Year is certainly one of those occasions. Right from getting used to changing the year in all our written correspondence, going over our well-rehearsed resolutions, donning new clothes, planning our personal and professional events, reveling in our new 'spoilt for choices' role at the dawn of every New Year, we simply can’t remain untouched with a heightened sense of exhilaration and anticipation.

Now let’s take a deep breath, pause and reflect. Let us attempt to look beyond the glittery exterior at what lies underneath. Are we getting sucked into a robotic ritual? With all our attempts to create an individual stand, rise above the clutter aren’t we aping the masses and allowing the herd mentality to creep in? The same set of faces ( plus or minus a few ), the same New Year parties, the same long drawn arduous exercise of selecting new clothes, sporting new hairstyles, new looks, looking out for festive discounts and flaunting our new found acquisitions as and when we can. So is there something really new, something really novel that we do every year?

Dear students, as the countdown begins and 2017 ticks away and 2018 rings in …. Let’s take stock, let’s recount, relive all that we have done or not done, achieved or failed at in the year that is fast ticking into oblivion. Can we use our introspection and realization and take that as an heirloom to 2018, can we stretch our arms out and welcome 2018 as a new opportunity to actually give birth to something new, something that will make a difference in our personal or professional lives. Let us harbour at least one thought, one idea which we will nurture throughout 2018 and make a positive difference either in our lives or in the lives of others. If we start doing it this year we shall definitely see its culmination at the end of next year and the word NEW would then certainly achieve a deeper and meaningful significance.

Remember that A New Year isn’t new till it guarantees a New You …..a positive you .... a better version of the past you.... I take this opportunity to wish all of you a Wonderful and happening 2018 ……Good Luck and cheers to a New You !
"}]
I still remember the hustle-bustle of my class back in 4th grade, when everybody was too excited to participate in the “fancy dress” competition that was to be held by our school, KV No.1, AFS Adampur, in two days. The environment was full of enthusiasm and excitement of who is going to be dressed like whom. And that was when, my class teacher, Ms Sharddha Saxena, called me, and asked me to dress up like Kalpana Chawla.

I knew who Gandhiji, Bhagath Singh, Indira Gandhi, Mother Teresa and all were. But, Kalpana Chawla? That rang no bells. With building curiosity of knowing who Kalpana Chawla was, I went to Ms Sharddha, and asked her to tell me a bit about her; but she was too occupied in handling those 40 noisy students of the class, and all that she told me was “She flies an aeroplane. Ask your father; he will be knowing about her.”

Well, she did put an 8 year old in a pickle. By the time I reached home, I could bearly remember her full name. In the evening, when my mom, dad and myself, sat together with a warm cup of tea; I walked up to my father and asked him to tell me about Kalpana. He told me that she was a NASA astronaut sent to space, and died in a tragic shuttle disaster, and that’s when I got to know who KALPANA CHAWLA was! I was too excited about the competition the next day. KALPANA CHAWLA was who I was going to be dressed like.

On the day of the competition, I saw all my classmates dressed colourfully, representing greatest people of India. And I was there, in an Air Force uniform, with badges stuck on my shoulders and arms, and a helmet in my hand. For obvious reasons, I immediately became the centre of attraction, which made me nervous.

I saw all my fellow participants talking their dialogues on stage; some did it confidently, and some stammered. After a while, it was my turn to go onto the stage. I got cold feet and I messed up my performance. I felt embarrassed and was pretty upset.

There is a saying which goes -- “Failure defeats losers but inspires winners”, and that when I told myself “I don’t want to act like Kalpana Chawla. I want to become Kalpana Chawla!” At that moment I fixed my destiny to become a NASA scientist.

No journey is ever a cake walk. Like a river finds obstacles on its way to the ocean, I too had to face many barriers in life. And it was truly not easy to overcome them, yet I never gave up. My friends, relatives, society started to test my stubbornness. But I was standing strong, because my dad was by my side, encouraging and motivating me at every step towards my dream.

There were times when the odds were not on my side, but I always found my way out because of the constant support from my father. When the world said “Hey! You can’t do it!” my dad said “You’re my daughter. And there is nothing that my daughter can’t do!”

Years passed by. It’s been 12 years since the competition. Things did change in my life. But, this time, I had the control on it. After 12 years of constant struggle and hard work, here I am half way through my dream. Today, I am living my dream before being graduated. Today, I am interning at ISRO. Not once, but twice!

Yes, dreams do come true, but only when you believe that you can turn them into reality. People always say that there is always a woman behind a successful man. You know I'm not a very religious person but I will defend the right of Santa to exist and children be told stories about him because of one very singular reason, the same reason that made my childhood awesome.

It gives children hope.

Now I know that it might be a bit too cruel for children to hope in a world that has nothing left for them unless they're rich, upper middle class and privileged in society, but the adults are suffering enough in this world for us to put children through the very same misery.

Of course, it goes without saying that a child would slowly discover the truth about the world over a period of multiple years but it doesn't hurt to tell them that there is a bearded and rotund man out there somewhere who makes gifts in his workshop and brings chocolates to children who have been good that year.

A child cares not what religion is, they only face the direction their parents want them to face and pray to whatever god their parents choose to believe. None of us ever thought about this twice but here's a curve ball for you, would you really have chosen the same religion as your parents, given the choice? Or would you have chosen no religion and chose to live outside the purview of organised religion that operate more like global corporations than spiritual guides they were meant to be?

Obviously I'm slightly biased towards logic and reason but I don't mind if you think religion is an important part of your life. What I want to highlight here is that for a child, its not what the correct religion is, if there is ever such a thing, but what can our world's rich culture give them.

And like that, we have Santa Claus, a mythical figure that made us believe life was better and will be better if you were good. While the ability to have a decent life was and remains the avenue of the privileged and the slightly underprivileged, it still allows our children to live their lives without dealing with the harsh realities of life until they are ready to face them on their own.

This is why Santa Claus is important.
"}]
I don't understand why people, specifically teachers and authority figures, emphasis on making personal sacrifices at the drop of a hat. Making sacrifices isn't as easy as it sounds and yet these folks will keep pestering you until you tell them to leave you alone or follow through simply due to the sheer mental pressure of the torture they're putting you through.

See, if you are the kind of person that chose to do something out of frustration of being told to do so over and over again, then fine, that worked for you, but you still do not understand the true value of sacrifice and why it must be cherished and valued.

You see for the rest of us who have nothing but ourselves to improve our own lives, sacrifice is a mountain to climb that seems impossible but sometimes becomes the only way out of a rut that becomes your life.

It never is that easy to make sacrifices. Many times sacrifices come at great personal loss, of having gone through hell and realising what is important and what is not. Our elders, having gone through this dance routine in their life already, are under an illusion that making similar sacrifices in our lives, us youngsters who are just inheriting this broken planet, will be just as easy as them making sacrifices. It doesn't take into account that we have regrets and possible regret not doing something, no you must be immediately be ready to make sacrifices.

The thing is, you cannot force a personal sacrifice. You cannot hold a metaphorical gun to someone's head and threaten them directly or indirectly to give up something willingly, for a sacrifice to be effective, it has to come from within.

Like the decision to improve oneself. If someone is unhealthy and too lazy to fix themselves, chances are they will never stop being unhealthy until they get a shock, until they realise that they are slowly killing themselves with their lifestyle. Sacrifices must come from within, or they won't work, and making them is not as easy as it sounds.
"}]
Dearest Mother,

As I write this, I feel the chilly air nip at my heels because I still refuse to call Hyderabad's winters cold, out of pride no doubt misguided, but it isn't as cold as back home, mama. I might just as well swallow my pride and admit to my friends that I am actually feeling cold, but then again, I just might grin and bear it and hide in my blankets later.

But despite the fact, mama, the cold reminds me of something very warm. It reminds me of hot chocolates next to French windows overlooking the valley back home, where I can curl up in my blankets and read book after book while you bring me all the hot chocolate and cake I need to put on weight over the holidays. It reminds me of the snowfall and the chill in the air unlike any I've felt this part of the country, one that stings your cheeks and cools your throat.

But most of all, mama, it reminds me of you. Of your warm embrace, of the cakes you bake, of the feast you make and of the stories you tell as I'm curled up like a cat in your lap. I miss the admonishment you give my brothers and how you sneak extra pieces of cake and a cup of hot chocolate away for me because I love it so much.

So I'm writing to tell you this that I'm coming home for Christmas, mama. I'll come back and you'll be there and so will be my brothers and my father and we'll come together and hug each other and tell each other stories and drink chocolate around a fire. And no matter where we get in life, I promise you this, mama.

I'll always come home for Christmas.

Love,

Secret Santa is perhaps the best thing we've taken from the West and implemented here. There's something quite endearing in investigating what your giftee's hobbies and interests are and buying a gift based on that but then again, not everyone has time for that so here's a list of some fantastic ideas under Rs. 1000

1. Buy Books!

Loads of them. If you're the enterprising kind, you can even go to stores where they sell books by the kilos and pick out the best books you can find and pack them up for your giftee. 2. Buy Comic Books!

This one can be a bit tricky because comic books are expensive in India. There are a few special editions, like The Dark Knight Returns, Killing Joke and a host of others. My personal recommendation, however, would be buying either the Marvel Comics or DC Comics Encyclopaedia, which covers everything there is to know about both the universes, at least until 2009 or so. It's December 20 and I'm already lazy.

It's not actually December 20 at the time of writing this but this will be published on December 20th, I think, so I'm writing it in advance so the good folk at stuMagz have an easier time putting this on their social media page. See, I can be quite considerate.

Jokes aside, you've seen the title of this piece. I really wonder if laziness that comes with the end of the year is associated with the fact that the end of the year is finally here and we can slow down for a bit before getting back into the hustle and bustle of life?

Of course, the rest of the world - at least parts where Christmas is the central religious holiday - the end of the years is associated with taking a massive break from work and just chilling with your family and friends. People often buy gifts for each other, there is a general cheer around the place, it is a nice feeling. I've heard people refer to it as the Christmas Spirit.

As much as I like raining on the religious parade, the Christmas Spirit is a real thing, except it has nothing to do with something magical or omnipotent causing the cheer, but the simple fact that people associate the end of the year with the end of something massive. We review the changes we went through in that year, what kind of experiences we've had and what kind of experiences will we be looking forward to the coming year.

Think of one year as one full day. The end of the year is the evening part of this day where you relax and meet friends and family before relaxing and going to sleep and waking up, ready to face a brand new day.
