The sound of drums filled the room but I couldn't find any instrument on the stage and all of a sudden I just see a man standing on the stage. It was Jayanth, a 20-year student from my college, who is a beatboxer.

Beatboxing, often called as the fifth element of hip hop, is a form of music where the musician makes sounds without using any instrument. Jayanth Nag started beatboxing at the age of 14 after he was captivated by a beatboxer's performance.

"The sounds which we hear from musical instruments can be done on beatboxing too. That fascinated me the most and the uniqueness of beatboxing is what made me learn it in the first place," says Jayanth, who initially started off by posting videos on the internet, adding, "Based on the response that I got to my videos, I started performing."

Having performed several times in various colleges like St. Francis, St Joseph, OU, SNIST and many more, Jayanth also has the accolade of being the judge of a beatboxing competition at St. Francis in 2018.

The fact that I didn't have a proper tutor was my biggest challenge and I can affirmatively say that YouTube has been my teacher," says the fourth-year CSE student at Sphoorthy Engineering College

Consciously or not, music plays a huge role in the lives of people and popular culture. Here are five incredible albums that will inspire, teach and help students get through their lives.

txt
rich_1561120310604

1. Pink Floyd - The Wall

I would be sorely remiss if I didn't include this iconic album on the list. It's a raw, gritty album that takes on authority and individuality. The famous song 'Another Brick in the Wall' that goes 'We don't need no education, we don't need no thought control...' belongs to this album. All students go through this phase of rebellion in which they question authority and listen to Pink Floyd; it's a natural part of growing up.

2. Radical Face - The Family Tree

Radical Face arranged their music in a massive project that spanned three albums- The Family Tree: The Roots, The Branches and The Leaves. It chronicles the tales of a family, the highs and lows, the affection, the bad blood... It is truly a masterpiece. The soothing vocals in conjunction with the innovative use of acoustic instruments gives it all an unearthly flavour. The idea that family and ancestry is so deeply rooted into your identity is something that a lot of us will appreciate. Their other albums, Ghost and The Junkyard Chandelier are also well worth listening to.

3. Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction

One of the most recognized albums of all time, it manages to capture the essence of rock and roll in all its glorious beauty. Students will particularly identify with its themes of tortured love and helpless ambition. It had great guitar solos, raw vocals, soulful tangents, earth shaking percussion and piercing lyrics. What more do we need? Listen to this album to see Axl and Slash at their soul-stirring best.

4. Arctic Monkeys - AM

This album reminds me of cruising down the highway at night in a red convertible with laconic music interspersed with white noise playing on the radio. It is both soothing and energizing at the same time. This album is a must for those nights when you just want to think, wonder and move.

5. Junkyard Groove - 11:11

This Indian band consisting of four members makes refreshing music that incorporates Indian elements into rock. Their song 'Folk You' on the album 11:11 involves Tamil rapping that sets even the most stoic person's foot tapping. Gruff vocals combined with the electric guitar that just runs all over the place makes this a really fun album that you must listen to.

There have been a lot of things going on globally, ranging from massive protests and movements to internal crises to algorithms potentially affecting politics. Here's a look at some of those things that every student needs to know about.

1. CRISIS IN SUDAN:

In December 2018, the Sudanese people started facing an economic crisis with thrice the increase in food prices. This initiated a wave of protest all over the country for the resignation of President Omar Al-Bashir. A few months later, he was removed from his power and arrested.

After this, the capital Khartoum was filled with bloodshed. On June 3, 2019 a total of 188 people are said to be killed since the military opened fire at protesters with rapid support forces taking lead in violence.

The activists claimed that hospitals and schools have been attacked and the bodies were dumped into the river Nile.

One of the first victims, Mohamed Mattar who is a 26-year-old engineer was shot down when he was trying to protect two women from the attack. As blue was his favourite colour, the social media users turned their Twitter and Instagram profiles into blue to honor his memory.

By using the hashtag #BlueForSudan, many users have joined the movement including U.S. singers Rihanna and Demi Lovato by tweeting their statements of support with protesters.

3. TRADE WAR BETWEEN THE U.S. AND CHINA:

For a while, the U.S. and China's trade war is all over the news.

The U.S-China trade partnership used to be one of the most important understandings in the world. After months, this strong progress made a trade deal in increasing their taxes in both countries.

From September 24, 2018 the taxes have been pushed up from 10% to 25% on the U.S. $200 billion worth of Chinese goods when China retaliated in increasing taxes on $60 billion dollars of U.S. goods and products.

U.S. president Donald Trump says, he campaigned for the elections to make American trades fairer by fighting its oldest trading partners as China. According to him, the unfair businesses transactions of American technology and intellectual property with China needs to be stopped in order to protect jobs.

By doing this, the taxes on U.S. products could become cheaper than the imported ones. This can also encourage the consumers in buying the American products to boost up the local businesses as their businesses are getting harmed. Recently, a rule was passed in the United States according to which, importers have to pay 25% tax on imported steel and 10% on aluminium from China.

So, these are the reasons which lead to the trade war between the U.S. and China.

According to stock market research, China may not have much firepower as of U.S. to retaliate, as the U.S. used to buy more from China than it sells. To balance these economic issues, the U.S. needs to find alternative ways to fight back by making life difficult for American companies in China by increasing red-tape.

Beauty to the college doesn't comes from it's size, it comes from how it looks in a rainy ☔ day. Stepping into college after years of hard work in stuffed classrooms gives a sense
of freedom and recklessness that we can't even imagine. While college years turn
out to be the most productive years in the lifetime of most successful people,
they also form a foundation of life long failure for those who don’t effectively
utilize it and fall in the trap of raging hormones. Most succumb to love, phone
addiction, alcohol or other forms of addictions and all the drive gets misled by
peers into instant pleasure but long term heartache.

In every generation, it seems, the same lament goes forth from the parents of
adolescents: "What's the matter with kids today?" Why are they so often
confused, annoying, demanding, moody, defiant, reckless? Accidental deaths,
homicides, and binge drinking spike in the COLLEGE age group kids. It's the time
of life when love issues, eating disorders, and addictions are most likely to take
hold.

Yoga can be hugely beneficial to youth when it comes to restoring natural
hormonal balance, thereby helping to keep our physical and mental health in
check.

The endocrine system, which is made up of a collection of hormone-producing
glands is essential to practically every function in the body. These functions range
from energy levels to growth and development, as well as metabolism and sexual
function. When you are struggling with a hormonal imbalance, you could suffer
from a wide variety of symptoms—including headaches, skin problems, insomnia,
fatigue, weight gain, and mood problems. It’s easy to see why keeping the
endocrine system working at an optimal rate is essential to ongoing good health!

Certain yoga poses, like these three below, can stimulate the hormone-producing
glands and help them maintain optimal function. This leads to consistent
production and distribution of these hormones around the body. Yoga's focus on
breathing is also beneficial for stimulating the endocrine system, helping it to
function more effectively. For natural relief from hormone-related symptoms, try
adding these poses to your practice.

Plenty of explanations for youthful turmoil are available. Young adults need to
assert their independence and explore their limits, taking risks, breaking rules,
and rebelling against their parents while still relying on them for support and
protection. They have to cope with disconcerting new sexual impulses and
romantic feelings... Unsettled moods and unsettling behavior may be rooted in
uneven brain development. Among the last connections to be fully established are the links
between the prefrontal cortex, seat of judgment and problem-solving, and the emotional centers
in the limbic system, especially the amygdala. These links are critical for emotional learning and
high-level self-regulation. And all of this can be regulated by doing a strong yoga
practice.

Hormonal changes at work in a young adults brain pours out adrenal stress hormones, sex
hormones, and growth hormone, which in turn influence brain development. The production of
testosterone increases 10 times in boys. Sex hormones act in the limbic system and in the
raphe nucleus, source of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is important for the regulation of
arousal and mood. The hormonally regulated 24-hour clocks change their settings during
adolescence, keeping the high school and college students awake far into the night and making it
difficult to rise for morning classes.to understand that this is a normal process and to eliminate
the factors aggravating these issues is the need of the hour but sadly no one understands
physiology and helps young adults in having a better understanding of themselves.

Rabbit Pose (Sasangasana)

This pose works to stimulate the thyroid and the parathyroid glands. It is also
believed to help combat depression. The thyroid gland is located in the neck and
secretes hormones that regulate growth and metabolic function. The parathyroid
glands are also found in the neck and control how much calcium is released into
the body. If the hormone balance of the parathyroid glands is not balanced as it
should be then this can be detrimental to calcium distribution.

To get into this pose, start by sitting on your heels in Hero Pose. Extend your arms
back and hold onto the soles of your feet. Tuck your chin inward toward your
chest as you round your body forward, hinging your body at your hips. At this
point, your head should drop toward the floor as your forehead touches your
knees. Lift your hips upward slightly as the crown of your head rests on the floor,
and rest comfortably for 5 deep breaths. You can then slowly return to Hero Pose.
Repeat 3 times.

The ancient Indian form of Yoga has been a practice to increase ones' mental and physical abilities for millennia now, and in the last couple of decades, it has received widespread recognition from across the world. People from all walks of life practice it widely and in fact, in 2015, the United Nations declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga; following Narendra Modi's proposal for the same in 2014.

With a practice like this, which enhances both physical and mental abilities, it doesn't come as a surprise to see people from the film-industry (especially actors and actresses, for whom fitness is of utmost importance) taking it up. Lakshmi Manchu, who is one of the fittest actresses in Tollywood, is a well known practitioner of Yoga and she believes that it is one form that has equally helped her mentally.

"I took it up 12 years ago and since then, I have benefitted extensively from it. The fact that you do difficult asanas and stretch your body in ways that you never thought you could, helps you confront your fears easily in life," says Lakshmi, over a telephone call, adding "Subconsciously, it adds to your mental strength a lot and while physical exercise is a major part of Yoga, the mental strength you get from it is equally beneficial."

Just a google image search of the actress practising Yoga is enough to make everyones' jaws drop in awe, as the actress can pull off feats like a full split with the ease of a student bunking a class. The joy that she gets when she does it is evident in the pictures and as she says, "I really wish I practiced it more often and had taken it up earlier. It gives me immense joy and is an absolute stress buster."

Lakshmi also believes that Yoga will benefit students greatly as it helps the body in many ways as opposed to other forms of physical exercise, as she explains, "Other forms of exercise just help the body but yoga is extremely internal too. It helps every cell in the body and that is why I would even suggest this to students. The mental and spiritual strength that you get from practising yoga will enable you to face anything in the world with ease, whether it is an interview or an exam. In fact, I believe yoga should be made mandatory in schools and in our school (the school that the Manchu family runs) yoga is one of the options available to the children. We put a lot of emphasis on physical activities and in fact, we openly tell parents that if they want to send their children to our school only for getting marks, then they can choose some other school."

Another reason why it should be mandatory in schools, according to her, is the fact that most Indians don't know much about Yoga. "With globalisation, many people in other countries are happily taking it up while at the place of its origin, it is neglected to a great extent. I think only 1 in 50 individuals are into yoga and it should gain more acceptance in our own country," she shares.
"}]
