UPSC exams is no laughing matter, it has given even the brightest minds in India a run for their money, and when it comes to preparing for the UPSC while also in engineering, the prospect can sound daunting and exhausting, not to mention impossible, but as a wise man once said, nothing is impossible if you set your heart to it.

After going through multiple Quora answers and reading testimonials, here are the top 5 points that, if followed religiously, will set you on the path to the civil services of India.

1. Prepare Your Mind and Body

You don't have to go all Kung Fu Panda and achieve inner peace, but you need to have an unquenchable thirst for information, and your body has to be healthy and fit enough to take on whatever you throw at it, both to be able to study without reproach and to retain all the information you consume.

2. Make a time table and stick to it

It goes without saying that UPSC exams require serious preparation to crack, there are some who never leave the rooms they are preparing in until absolutely necessary until exam day, but then, since you're an engineering student, you do not exactly have that luxury since you have classes to attend (unless you're going into the 4th year, which means you do have that luxury).

By managing your time with an airtight time table that gives enough time for preparations and your engineering subjects, and you also get to have fun on the weekends. All of this is only possible if you stick to your schedule religiously.

3. All work and no play makes Jack a very dull boy

It is very easy to go off into the twilight zone while you're studying for the UPSC, and by that I mean it's incredibly easy to lose yourself in books and become addicted to consuming information, no matter how irrelevant it is to the UPSC exam. You need to let your mind cool down from time to time, it is not a machine, you aren't a machine, and even computers need a restart every now and then to clear space on the RAM.

Also if anyone ever tells you that if you struggle now, life will be easy later, please laugh directly in their face, point at them and laugh if possible. Live your life now, in this moment, be ambitious to take on the UPSC, but also remember who you are and where you come from. If you keep pushing yourself to study more without breaks, you're only setting yourself up for a massive burnout. So chill and pursue your hobbies from time to time, without forgetting that you have a strict time table to stick to.

4. Read at least 4 newspapers

Knowing current events and the pulse of the times is an important part of preparing for the UPSC, and the best way to equip yourself with this info is to read at least 4 newspapers, 2 in English, and 2 in the local language. Not only does this provide you with context for both local happenings, but also enables you to know your surroundings and your country better, which will better help serve the nation once you crack the UPSC.

5. Make CSAT your strength

Phase 1 of the UPSC has you writing the CSAT which you, coming from an engineering background, can turn into an advantage and score the highest marks in this phase of the examination. By sticking to the schedule and studying, you can turn your fortune around at the UPSC. I believe in you.

Experts believe that 8 to 10 months of rigorous preparation for the UPSC is enough to crack the prestigious exam. Luckily, you have time on your side if you decide to prepare early, but that doesn't mean starting your preparations a bit late (say at the start of 4th year) is a bad thing.

Going abroad for education is a mammoth task, it can be hectic to decide where to go, there are many apprehensions along the way, and for many, it is the first time they're traveling anywhere at all, let alone to a foreign country with different customs, braving culture shocks and finding bastions of their own culture within close knit communities. It requires a lot of fortitude to brace yourself to study abroad, so it is only fair that you carefully choose the University you want to apply to.

To help ease this process, here's a handy guide of how to choose the universities you should apply for.

1. Research, and then research some more!

A wise man once said that in the age of the internet, ignorance is a choice, and rightly so. Instead of applying to the first University you find and hoping for the best, use the high speed internet at your disposal and do your research into the colleges you want to apply for. There's plenty of resources online, and Universities maintain websites and pages with relevant information pertaining to their campus life, courses and professors.

2. Keep your ambitions in check

The average student cannot go and directly apply to an Ivy League university without having the necessary qualifications. Don't be disappointed with an Ivy League rejects your application, because their criteria for selection is actually quite strict. Instead, following up with the previous point, do your research and find the best universities that fit your profile, and short list them. However, if you have the option of getting into Ivy League Universities, what are you waiting for! Go claim your destiny!

3. Short list your essentials

Once the decision to study abroad is made, short list the essential things you want to carry abroad according to the place your university is located in. Some people make the mistake of carrying their entire homes with them in multiple heavy bags that serve no purpose but slow you down and make you worry about your luggage.

With research, you can short list what essentials you want depending on the Indian diaspora living around your university. You may not want to carry your entire home and extended family in your luggage, but you do want to carry the bare necessities, the simple bare necessities for you to go abroad.

4. Honesty is the best policy

Let's face it, a degree itself is great but going abroad, thousand miles away from home to study and build a life for yourself is an overwhelming and scary prospect. It can break even the toughest of people, so ask yourself if you really want to do it. With how family oriented us Indians can be, if you're worried about lack of family, just make sure you choose a university where you have easy access to members of your family to feel right at home. If not, it's not that bad to not go abroad to study, at least you won't be lying to yourself.

If you're like me, however, and don't care about having relatives around, choose whichever university you want!

5. Choosing subjects and universities

Many students I've known make the mistake of going abroad for the sake of going abroad, and thus choose whatever subject they want, get their SOPs written by someone else and somehow struggle through Uni.

It, of course, doesn't have to be this way, if you choose the subject you want to study. Personal interest is the best way to survive Uni abroad, especially when there's no all in ones to fall back on. So ask yourself, what do you want to study, why do you want to study it, and what will you get out of it.

If you satisfactorily answer these questions, then you can attend University fairs conducted in your cities and decide which one fits best.

Studying abroad requires tremendous amount of commitment and iron will, and we wish all of you choosing to go abroad all the very best in your future endeavours!
"}]
“They say I cant see ma!” he said in a low but firm voice. He could feel the warmth of her tears instantly. “I ‘m afraid that you wont be able to survive in this world son!” she said with shattered voice. His memories flashed back. He felt like he was exailed from the world of colours. All he could see was darkness from all the sides. Silence roared in that darkness. Quickly tracing back , he stood up and tried to sense his coat. His mother was speechless. She tried to stop him, but her effort went in vain.” I will be back in an hour”. She could clearly hear him colliding things. Once he was out of his house he took a deep breadth. Strangely he could even the expansions and contractions of his lungs. He walked stiff and straight. He could hear the quarrels of the grocery shopkeepers. He figured it was the end of their street, turned right and tried to sense the raised platform of footpath. A little while later his nose sensed beautiful rose perfume which reminded him of the rose garden next to his office. Everyone in his work place had known about him but they were surprised to see him in office. He found his chair quickly started working. He was a stenographer major part of his work was to typewrite. “Morning all!” he said in a calm voice sensing their astonishment by their silence. As soon as hr heard the fifth bang of the clock. He started walking back. He heard the clouds clashing, he knew it would rain, but ignored and continued to walk. He could feel the raindrops sliding through his face. He could sense the sweet smell of the rainy mud. A small kid standing under a tree got hold of his hand and bought him to shade. “I’m a neighbour sir” the boy said in a requesting voice. There was a long pause. The boy wishing to break the silence spoke again. “you cant differentiate colours isn’t it?” the boy said. “ Who said ? I can see black the most beautiful colour on this earth” he answered with a smile.

It is we who differentiate people calling them as physically challenged. We may call it sympathy but for them it is an indirect criticism. It is we who are mentally challenged call them physically challenged. If we really have love in our hearts, lets make things accessible for them.
