In a survey last year, the employability assessment company Aspiring Minds found out that only 7% engineers are actually employable and in a survey conducted among Computer Science and IT Engineering students last week, they found out that only 4.77 per cent candidates can write the correct logic for a program. In other words, only 4.77 students meet the basic requirement for any IT job. In a country that where about 2,50,000 IT jobs are created every year, this is a shocking fact.

It was also noted in the study that while more than 60 per cent candidates cannot even write code that compiles, only 1.4 per cent can write functionally correct and efficient code.

Why is this problem arising despite having about 3300 engineering colleges in the country?

The simplest answer to this is the combination of outdated syllabi that the colleges have; the emphasis on getting marks and clearing the exam as opposed to learning the subject; the fact that Indian college system emphasises more on submitting hand written assignments for marks adds to the problem as most of the students' time is gone in writing these assignments, the time which they can spend in developing their skills; and the fact that the IT companies never or rarely communicate their requirements to colleges.

For instance, languages like Ruby and PHP which are the need of the hour in the web programming field are not even taught in colleges. The hiring companies, who often recruit in bulk, don't bother communicating what knowledge pool that they exactly require, to the colleges. Also, based on the way companies recruit from colleges and filter the applicants, they take it for granted that the students make an effort to learn more than what the college teaches them.

A CSE student, on condition of anonymity, says "We learn the basics of programming but nothing beyond that. I learnt a lot of things like Python and Android development by myself. The basic Java that I learnt in college helped me but what I feel is that the curriculum needs to change drastically to suit the growing needs. When I got interested in IoT, I realised I have to learn Python as most of the programming related to that is done in that language."

Android programming is also a hot requirement but while colleges teach Java, they don't teach the framework and other technical aspects which are required to build applications. While some colleges are now adding these much-in-use programming languages in the curriculum, most colleges still follow syllabus that was designed about 20 years ago.

The fact that there are a lot of certificate-issuing institutes in areas like Ameerpet, only adds to the whole problem. The solution here seems to be a perfect sync between colleges and companies, with the companies conducting skill development programs or some such, depending on the feasibility and the colleges updating their syllabus to suit the fast paced world. While the syllabi that are there in colleges now is absolutely required for students, considering the fact that most of it teaches basics, a tweak in the syllabus can be done, with more emphasis on the new technologies.

txt
rich_1492854073576

The Common Writing Exam (CWE) is held for recruitments into various PSU banks, or government run banks, with the sole exception of SBI which has an exam of its own. Conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection, the exam is also referred to as the IBPS exam after the institute that conducts it.

In a previous post on stuMagz, we spoke about how government jobs are highly coveted and methods to get one. In this post, we'll talk about securing a job in various PSU Banks of India and how to effectively prepare for the CWE or IBPS exam.

1. Know Your Exam

Get it? It's a play on Know Your Customer (KYC), please don't hate me if the joke is not funny. Jokes aside, however, it is important that you understand what you're going to study and compartmentalise to prepare accordingly. The CWE has the following: English, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude. The exam is conducted for 1 hour, so it is important for you to break down the time spent on each section and maintain your time advantage so you aren't rushed into marking wrong answers in a last minute panic. All of this can't be done by preparing for the exam overnight, obviously.

2. Strengthen Your Reasoning

It is a well agreed upon fact that reasoning in the IBPS exam is your ticket to cracking the exam, because this section has the potential of giving you full marks, if you regularly brush up your reasoning.

3. Analysing Quantitatively

This section can turn to your advantage if you are good with your way around math and enjoy solving mathematical problems, but despite the best calculations, sometimes things can go wrong, and as such it doesn't enjoy the same priority Reasoning does in high scoring, however, being good at Quantitative Analysis is a sure shot way of guaranteeing you cracking the exam.

4. Manage Your Time

Three sections in one hour might sound easy but trust us when we say this that it is not, you need to be at the top of your game to finish the paper on time and come out on time with a smile on your face, and you can do this by proper time management. Design a little chart for yourself where you assign the three topics some amount of minutes out of the 60 you have. For example, Reasoning, due to it's high scoring nature, requires 20 to 25 minutes.

Candidates should also consider starting their exam with English, as it is the quickest to solve and can be a boost to you if you are good at English in ensuring you score marks. English should not take more than 10 minutes. Divide the rest between Reasoning and Quant.

5. Solve Mock Papers Before The Paper Mocks You

None of the above points will matter in the end if you do not solve mock papers like a person possessed. Whatever you do, no matter how much you prepare, all of it is useless until and unless you solve mock papers and prepare yourself for the upcoming exam effectively. Not only will mock tests help you understand the nature of the questions, it is the ultimate test of your time management: this is where you practice your time management skills so that you don't falter in the exam itself.

There is beauty even in the dark, raw and grimy corners of Cormac McCarthy's phenomenal book, The Road, but this beauty is not for everyone. Before we start this review, let me be clear that it is a very dark and depressing novel about the breakdown of society following an apocalyptic event. It is raw, it will get under your skin and it will disturb you, so only pick it up if you think you are okay with the themes in the book, and for the love of everything you hold dear, don't gift this book to a child or a teenager.

That being said, Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize winning book The Road is set in a post apocalyptic world and features a young boy and his father in a journey across a destroyed America. They have many hundreds of miles to cover in their journey, all their possessions are in a backpack they wear and in the shopping cart they push, and have a revolver with only two bullets left, to fend off cannibals out to eat the next human they find. From this, it's quite obvious to know the kind of tone that the book is going to have, and McCarthy wastes no time in getting down to the brass tacks of this bleak, hopeless world: the first few pages alone are enough to crush an average person's soul.

The cover picture of this article, as well as this picture above, are taken from the live action adaptation of the book, which I highly recommend you watch.

McCarthy is brutal in his depiction of an America where society has broken down. Throughout the world, there is very little hope, very little comfort, and to watch it unfold through the eyes of a young boy only adds to the unease the reader feels. Despite the horrors he sees, the father does all he can to instil a sense of morality into his young and timid son, all while acknowledging his own morality.

To go any further into detail about The Road would involve spoilers, and there are some things that simply should not be spoiled, like Game of Thrones (and there's an app for that) and The Road, for example. All I can do is leave you with this little snippet about the reason for their journey: the father knows that they will not survive the oncoming winter, and decides to move south to survive, through heaps of ash caused due to an unexplained apocalyptic event, which makes breathing harder. They must escape cults, cannibals, people who have descended into eating fellow humans for lack of food, frowning at every person they meet that doesn't attack them on sight. It's a story of lack of trust, what it takes to be alive, morality, survival and the relationship between the father and his son.

Cormac McCarthy is no stranger to Hollywood, his novel No Country For Old Men was adapted into a movie and went on to win 4 Oscars, so it was no surprise that when the book was adapted into a movie in 2009 starring the excellent Viggo Mortensen, it was met with high praise with reviewers praising it for capturing the bleak setting of the book perfectly.

Perhaps its the writing style of McCarthy that makes digesting the horrific world of The Road so much easier. It's simple, to the point and blunt, and it gets the point across perfectly. McCarthy's work over the years can be described as a precursor to The Road, and while his other books are not as dark and filled with despair as much as The Road is, the elements are there, with culminate in the fantastic book that we were graced with just over 10 years ago.

Final Thoughts:

I highly recommend this book, but do note that it is not for everyone. The story is hard to digest, the mood can put people off due to it's nature and the horrors presented in it. However, despite the bleak nature of the story and characters, there is beauty in this book, among the dark ash filled heaps of a post apocalyptic world. The beauty comes in moments between the two lead characters, and you find yourself gasping every time something happens to them. There are not many books that have such a profound effect on users, this book might have as well been called The Road to Hell, and it would have made perfect sense.

In this day and age of digital journals which encourage you to log your daily experiences, note reminders and anniversaries, Bullet Journals are an analog method of logging your daily tasks, facts and time tables to help you organise your day better and deal with tasks head on. Of course, you may ask why should you even consider using a bullet journal in the first place, however the reason is fairly simple: people spend many hours planning what to do rather than actually doing it. With Bullet Journals, you get to plan your day rapidly, using Rapid Logging, and start getting around to your tasks.

While all of this sounds complicated, it really is not. Using a Bullet Journal and making logs is extremely easy, and here is how you can use it to study for your exams.

1. Make day specific tasks

Break down your syllabus and organise it in a neat manner which you can then assign to days on a time table. In your Journal, simply write the name of the date on top of the page, and note down the topic you want to study for that day, and mark it with a little 'o'. Once you're done with the task, make sure to fill out that o with your pen or pencil to indicate that you finished the task, or you can go the old fashioned way and mark it with an 'x'.

Once you find the answers to those questions, note down where you found the answers writing the name of the book and the page number, or the note book you have it in. This saves you time from searching the many textbooks you have all over again. One of the best ideas I've seen for keeping track of the books you've already read is to draw your bookshelf in your book, and note down the names of the books you've finished reading. Eminent scientist and thinker Carl Sagan described our planet, The Earth, as a Pale Blue Dot in a quote that has since then become legendary. Sagan, inspired by the photo taken by the satellite Voyager 1 at a distance of 6 billion kilometers from The Earth which showed the planet as an extremely small blue dot, about 0.12 pixels wide in the photo, wrote a beautiful quote describing the planet, calling it the only home we've ever known.

So it is saddening to see that us humans, despite knowing that this is the only home we've ever known, neglect it so much that we're causing the planet to heat up at an extremely rapid rate due to global warming, polluting our surroundings and taking our time on the planet recklessly. It doesn't have to be that way, of course, so on this Earth Day, let us take a look at the things you can do to ensure that there is still a planet left for those who will come after us. Don't get us wrong, the weight of the world ending doesn't have to be on your shoulders, but you don't have to go out of your way to save the planet. A simple change in your daily routines would be more than enough!

1. Start recycling the things you use around the house

Change always starts at home. As students, you are in a unique position to educate yours and your extended family about the benefits of recycling and lead by example. This is one of those cases where, when you practice what you preach, people will follow.

2. Use as little water as possible

This does not mean stop drinking water, it means that wherever you can avoid using excess water, do it. Research into low water consumption during washing utensils, raise plants that require less water but give more output, turn off the tap when you're brushing, use the old fashioned bucket and mug for bathing instead of the shower. It's all these little things that'll matter in the long run, and it are these little things that you can do right from your house.

3. Use as little fuel as you can

Nothing can beat the convenience of a personal vehicle, but having multiple personal vehicles and using them to go even small distances is a gross waste of fuel and contributor to global warming. While we may not be a nation that prefers walking to destinations as much as the west is, do consider walking or cycling to destinations nearby. A good sturdy cycle not only helps you be fit, but also reduces your carbon footprint and the affect you have on the environment.

4. Consider joining an Environmental organisation near you.

By joining an organisation or becoming part of an NGO dedicated to protecting the environment, you can become part of an organisation of like minded individuals that can do group activities together such as planting trees and teaching at schools about the importance of preserving the environment.

5. Raising awareness in your college.

One of the best things you can do is get together with a bunch of friends in your college and raise awareness about the need to protect the environment on this Earth Day. You can even get creative with how you want to spread your message, from designing creative placards to holding a soap box session. The explosive growth of mobile technology and cloud space is creating new opportunities for all of us to communicate and find information. It is also expanding the number of targets available for malicious hackers and other cyber-criminals worldwide.

That means that while India is fast becoming a major player in the world of information technology, it is also a major target and vulnerable to attack. Simply put, India has a shortage of IT and cybersecurity professionals who have the education needed to protect our citizens and data. In fact, India’s Bureau of Labour estimates that there are 3,84,500 jobs around the world in Information Technology but there are not enough qualified people to fill these jobs. That means that oftentimes, cybercriminals attack and there is no one there to stop them.

Co-working spaces are nothing new to Hyderabad, the city is dotted with many amazing co-working spaces, but there is one that comes with a twist of it's own, in such a way that it is geared towards the artists and creative people among us, called Jxtapose. Promising to be an excellent co-working place for artists, it also gives creative students a place to work on their craft, among various other things. Jxtapose would become the first of it's kind in Hyderabad, a co-working space for artists from across the city and more, and of course, the journey wasn't easy, as the team had to hunt for a suitable place to turn into their dream project, after having started the venture last year, "We are close to opening now," says Teja Vanamala, co-founder and Marketing head, "however, we've been conducting various events across the city leading up to the launch, which we hope to do between 15th to 2oth of May."
