On Sunday, i.e. March 19, a bunch of students armed with bags of vegetable seeds and knowledge and a zeal to make a difference in the lives of the people at Chinna Golkonda, a village about 35 kilometers from the city; held a day long awareness program for some 1000 plus people in that village.

As per their project report, the team from Hyderabad Youth Assembly, had found out that the farming community in that village had no idea about new techniques of farming but they were extremely enthusiastic about them. And that, is the reason why they held this event where they spread awareness on concepts of kitchen gardening. "Of UN's sustainable goals this year, Zero Hunger is what we took up and we realised that most of the people here are either paddy farmers or are daily wage workers, with no idea of kitchen farming." explains Madhuchandra, a 2nd year BTech student from SNIST, who was a part of this group. "Having a kitchen garden is extra beneficial for them, as it is a very economic alternative towards buying vegetables, considering the fact that most of them are daily wage workers," he adds.

"We took help from the Department of Horticulture, who gave us a lot of info about kitchen gardening and also gave us packets of seeds to distribute amongst the villagers," he says. While explaining the benefits of having a kitchen garden, they also explained and created awareness of techniques such as roof-top farming. "We also explained how waste materials like plastic bottles to use them as pots. The Telangana government's commitment of providing the youth from backward and underprivileged the means to stand on their own two feet bore fruit on Monday when the first batch of students under Telangana Academy of Skill and Knowledge, in collaboration with ICICI Foundation, finished their 90 day training program and collected certificates in various disciplines, like Office administration, web designing and sales.

Battle of bands held in colleges bring out some of the best student bands in the city (and sometimes even outside the city), and are a joy to witness, because they serve as a great example of the music scene of the city and a tribute to their inspirations. But, when a band is formed due to a battle of the bands event, you can be sure they know the capabilities of their peers before deciding to collaborate with them.

Fieto and Fables is one such band, one that was formed when the members met each other at a Battle of Bands competition. "It is funny really, in the beginning there was just me, Beno and Benny. What started as a competition turned into a jamming session because we were having incredible amounts of fun," says Fieto Rohith, who prefers to be known by his stage name, "the band slowly expanded from 3 people to 6, and that's where we are right now."

We speak with Rohith, the vocalist of the band about Fieto and Fables, their journey so far and the challenges they've faced.

"We have Vicky on the drums, Sam, the beatboxer, Benny the lead guitarist, he also plays rhythm from time to time, Rohit, another Rohit in the band, is the bassist, although he plays the keyboard and guitar too, and finally, Beno, who is super talented with everything, from bass, to drums, to guitars" says Fieto Rohith about his squad.

A student of Guru Nanak Pharmacy College, Rohith recounts bringing the band together and performing at gigs, "It is amazing really, from jamming together without knowing who we were, to forming a band today, it feels really amazing."

The members of the bands come from different colleges, "We have people from Shreyas, St. Mary's and St. Peters. It was music that brought us together" he smiles.

The conversation shifted gradually towards the future and the hardships they faced juggling their music and their studies, on which Rohith says, "It is not easy, getting together to just jam is difficult on most days, because of college timings, and various other factors like distance. Personally, I decided to take a break and simply stopped going to college so I can focus on my music. I might go back, or I might not, that remains to be seen, but obviously I can't ask band mates to drop their life and come running for this," he laughs, "It's not their fault, it is what it is."

Moving on to what he would like to tell students who want to pursue their own careers in music, he says, "Start young, that really is the best thing one can do. Start young, be dedicated to what you want to achieve, don't be afraid of failure because failure will be a part and parcel of the path you've chosen. This is about believing in yourself, believing that you can do it. So be brave and prepared to do things out of the box" he concludes.

With increasing instances of violence against women and women being subjected to various forms of sexual harassment, it is up to everyone (especially students), to do something about it. Along these lines, the students of JNTU started an initiative, Nirbhaya. The initiative aims to teach self-defense techniques to all the girls in JNTU and affiliated colleges. They plan on expanding to 20 colleges within a span of three months.

A martial arts expert will be available for four days in a week with the girls having the option of choosing one session every week. The trainer will then teach the girls various levels of self defense, to protect themselves in any situation.

Here's hoping this step goes a long way towards making our country a safer place to live in.

We see a lot of students give up easily when they have problems. A lot of teenagers now-a-days get easily bogged down when they have any issue in life, whether it is personal or health or in college. Having come from a family of journalists, she was always inclined towards media and when it was time to choose her career path, she ended up being an RJ. She shares, “I loved teaching and interacting with children. Yet my first love always remained radio. As a kid, I used to listen to tEverywhere I was told to wait till I graduated. But I just had no patience and fortunately, got an opportunity of being a Quiz Master on Yuva Vani. As luck would have it, the original host arrived and I was relegated to being the score keeper! That was my debut on air and thus began my long affair with the love of my life – Radio. My ultimate ambition in life was to be a newsreader on AIR like Barun Haldar and Vijay Daniels. Post my graduation, I went on to become a Hindi announcer with Doordarshan and from a professional Voice Over artist, doing Radio ads, TV commercials, corporate films, Emceeing, reading the news for Rozana (DD), being on Aap ki Adalat Aap ka Faisla (Zee TV), to voicing some of the best shows on Zee of those times – ‘Zaika ka safar’, Let's Talk with Anuradha Prasad, Insight, I did it all. I was the prime-time jock with them when we started in Delhi, hosting the evening drive time show called ‘Bumber to Bumper’. The show and the frequency got such immense popularity that I became a ‘mini local celebrity’.” he radio with my father and was fascinated with the idea of capturing the attention of listeners with just the power of one’s voice. By 11, I knew I had to be inside that black transistor one day! After a lot of cajoling, my father took me to All India Radio (AIR), Parliament Street, where he was a senior and much-respected sports journalist in the 80’s and 90’s. He used to do sports update, a weekly sports magazine on Radio and I would be after him, requesting him to give me a chance to read his script on air. Obviously, that wasn’t possible. So one day, he took me to AIR and then left me to fend for myself. But life has its way of being bad and right when Pallavi was enjoying her career as an RJ and rejoicing her new motherhood, she woke up one day in August 2005 and was unable to breathe. It worsened after fifteen days, as Pallavi shares, “One morning, as I started to brush my teeth, I could not spit the froth out. It went splashing all over the wash basin and my cheeks felt lifeless. I had to put my fingers inside my mouth to get the froth out. I thought I would choke. My gynecologist directed me to neurologist Dr. Vinit Suri who after a series of tests, diagnosed my condition as “Myasthenia Gravis” which at that moment was Greek to us. Myasthenia Gravis is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that is characterized by fluctuating weakness of the voluntary muscle groups with symptoms that can include drooping eyelids, blurred or double vision, slurred speech, difficulty chewing and swallowing, weakness in the arms and legs, chronic muscle fatigue and difficult breathing. Pallavi says of her condition “Frankly speaking, the year it hit me, that is 2005, I had no time to give it undue importance since I had a small baby to look after and a target of getting back on air as soon possible. However, as the months went by, I realized that the steroids were not of much use and the main medicine for muscle strengthening was also not working well. That is when the doctor suggested Thymectomy, removal of the Thymus gland which involved cutting the sternum. That surgery done, Thymoma was discovered and I had to undergo chemotherapy and radiation that pulled me down completely. What however, came as a rude shock was that post my surgery too, I was unable to speak clearly. The slur was gone but the voice was feeble. No one could hear me. I had to keep a bell next to my bed to call for help. People had to keep their ears next to my face to hear what I whispered. Apparently, one of my vocal chords got paralyzed on the operation table, during the surgery. Luckily, we have two of them which somehow got me going. The ENT had clearly said I would never be able to go back on air. I took it up as a challenge and told my mother who was nursing me, that I would prove the doctor wrong. Soon after the (open heart) Thymus removal, I took help from Pawan Kumar – my yoga guru, who further instilled confidence in me saying that he would ensure I got back my voice. Since one vocal chord was paralyzed, we worked on the other and I did yoga, pranayam and meditation. And within months I could feel the difference. My husband Rahul, my rock solid support – forever optimistic, goaded me on. He encouraged me to do the 7 km dream run in the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon the following year. Training with a supremely talented Reebok Instructor, Shiba Mehra for the Marathon, I continued my training the entire year, and the next year, thanks to her and Rahul, I ran, jogged, walked and dragged the 21 km Airtel Delhi half Marathon. My husband, a serial marathon runner, let go of his timing, to be right next to me in the entire 21 km track and telling me time and again, that it is ‘All in the mind’. We completed the half marathon. All was good. Or so I thought”.

Pallavi continues “A few months later the breathlessness started again and once again the tumour surfaced behind my left lung and I underwent another major surgery and 5 tumours were removed followed by chemotherapy and radiation. This time I questioned. Why? Why this? Why now when I had been looking after my body so well. I had never been fitter than this ever in my life. Eating the most nutritious food, being responsible, taking life easy, respecting each breath – life changed drastically. I was suddenly prone to all types of infections all the time. If I went barefoot on the floor for as much as less than a minute I would catch a cold that would take 20 days to go. Pneumonia and lung infections became so common in my life that ventilator now seemed a friend and the ICU, a second home. I still got over it all. Post the second major surgery, my action and daily life was restricted after a very bad attack of pneumonia. Suddenly I lost a lot of weight and was losing strength in my hands, legs, shoulder, facial muscles and my neck. A quick MRI showed ‘Hot spots’ in the right lung. The doctors, after much deliberation, decided to remove the hot spots as a precautionary measure. That meant a third major surgery which gave short term respite. In October 2016, I had Type 2 lung failure and was back on the ventilator and the ICU. The year had been tough. Insomnia had charred my life. Post the third surgery, my diaphragm had not only moved up causing the left lung to shrink with no space at all but it had also forgotten its job. The result was that I was unable to sleep on my back; I would sleep sitting on the bed for 2 hours at a stretch only to lose balance and fall of the bed. It worsened to the extent that I would doze off during day time, in meetings and even while standing. One day I fell 180 degrees on my back barely missing my brain. I was rushed to the hospital and was in ICU for a fortnight. Since then I have been on an AVAP BIPAP machine, an external non-invasive ventilator, that I need to use for 2 hours during the day but now at least, I can sleep well in a lying down position”.

txt
rich_1490004432682

After that MG attack in 2005, though she could not host the show as she had lost one of her vocal chords, she didn’t stop her career in Radio and she went on to become the breakfast show producer. But Pallavi was determined to get back on air and had promised herself that one day she would. While she did make a comeback on air in 2011, her remaining vocal chord could not sustain the long show and she had to step down. “Radio mirchi supported me throughout and later I was put in charge of the CSR division - Mirchi Cares - and I consider it my baby. We provide not just audio support and entertainment to the blind and visually impaired but also provide music education to them and the under-privileged children. Pallavi shares “In my entire struggle over the past 11 years, the office has stood by me rock solid. Never questioning my absence and allowing me to work from home. Thanks to technology and now the nature of my work where I do not have to work in the studio hands-on, working from home has been a boon. I can’t thank enough Prashant Pandey (CEO), Tapas Sen, G .G.Jayanta and Riya Mukherjee for reposing that faith in me. And that is why I too ensure not to disappoint anyone. Working as Group Head, CSR, Radio Mirchi, I have both the pleasure and satisfaction that I need from my work. Despite having had such a condition, she did not give up and is very optimistic about life. Her strength is emphasized more so in the fact that she penned a book when she was in ICU. Speaking of the book - “ICU Love Stories”, she says, “I wrote it simply because I was the only one conscious in the ICU, with a phone in hand and witnessing love stories unfolding in front of me. What began as an observation of an old couple ended up as a short story in the Evernote app of my Samsung Neo 3 handset. In the Neuro and Stroke ICU, where I spent a substantial number of days in 2015, all patients on the beds were zoned out and were in another world. I would see their near and dear ones come with the same amount of exuberance and hope and of course love, to see them morning and evening during the visiting hours. Completely bored with nothing else to do, I started observing and noting the story of each bed. A little bit of a chat with the sisters/nurses to get more info on the patient and a lot of observation had love stories waiting to be told.”

She also has a blog where she shares her life with fellow Myasthenia Gravis sufferers and explains, “I feel maybe this is what the purpose of my life is, to share my story so that others with MG know that they are not alone. Before getting into the article here are three key points to you have to keep in mind:

1. I am not a professional writer. So my grammar can give you cancer.

2.I still feel complicated to use punctuations. please ignore if there are mistakes.

3. This article is not to hurt any people sentiments and written as my country gave me a fundamental right of "Freedom of speech and expression".

Moving into the article.

I still remember the day when I used to play in my dad's factory with various kinds of rocks because he was into marble and granite business. Back then archaeology books and history channel were my only hangouts and as usual, like every other human being, I started to feel that I will make my career in archaeology and like many scientists I would get a chance to discover something. But I forgot I was born in India and in a middle-class family and above all my dad could not succeed in his business(which was not related to archaeology but my family thought it was) that means the whole blood line is not going into that business again. As a son, I was left with no option but follow them to have a peaceful(no) life. Apart from that my family never restricted me to anything. I started sipping whisky with my dad and used to speak about my love life to my mum (Even though they are judgemental). I moved on because what else I can do. Neither I was financially capable of leaving the house and above all, in India, you have to wait till 18 to do anything(even after that there will be no change). Then I thought I would become a CA or do a degree write Civil's. But life had other plans for me I guess because one of our family members tried doing CA but failed that clearly says that I have failed without giving my exam (judgemental shit). So CA plans ended in vain. Moving on, I was pushed to do MPC even though I was poor at maths and I never liked it. As we are given a statement that "2 years and you will have a clarity" before me whole family had a fixed clarity of how I have to lead my life. I was being stupid thinking that I can come out of this and I can persuade my parents. But when you try it you get to see a new phase of your parents. The emotional one which makes you left with no option rather than taking it (Still happens).

When I am typing this I realise that it wasn't my parents or society mistake. It was my mistake and what to do when the whole society is mocking you saying that what I was doing was WRONG. If it was now then I would have said " Million people are wrong? yes, they are wrong". In all this chaos you feel like sharing this with any person or friend and you expect them to listen. But it ends up me listening to their shit rather than they understanding mine.

Joined engineering which was the only thing I don't want to in Life (still I am doing it). Even though it is suffocating. People have a very bad habit of not understanding why it suffocates to do something which you don't want to do. Because they are already doing it by leading their lives as per society and family guideline which made me left with no option but to endure just like my past 19 years.

Every time I decide with utmost courage and confidence to take a path and lead a life either I get deceived or forced to see all the adjacent paths around me. In this process " I forgot the road I have to go" Because sign boards are man made not nature given.

One thing I realised in life is that when we are passionate about something we have to go for it even if we fail or we are faced with any situation. If we give up, the world is waiting for us to get you into their way and show you as an example of failure to the whole upcoming generations as you couldn't achieve it. So people who feel they want to do something in life don't listen to anyone you may look arrogant but there is the whole world trying you to get trapped.

Love your passion constantly because even if you fail you will have a hope to persuade your failure and again get back onto your road. If you stop or leave the road. I leave it to your imagination of how your life would be.
