One of the biggest reasons I want to be a child again is so I get to have the luxury of enjoying the summer holidays once again. I remember the holidays after Inter 2nd year, 5 months of pure bliss where I did nothing but play video games and compete in eSports tournaments where I won actual money, but that's a story for another time.

The overwhelming sense of freedom during the usual Summer Holidays can be difficult to handle sometimes. We become used to the routine, to the point that we cannot sit idle and while away time, that is of course, if you aren't me. I can sit still for hours doing nothing and it'll still be fun.

Jokes apart, here's a list of things you can do over the summer vacations

1. Take up shooting lessons

While taking out aggression in video games shooting bad guys is fun, learning how to shoot in real life will not only teach you how to aim and shoot, but also instil the discipline required to shoot a gun. The patience, the way the shooter breathes, the concentration, it's a great way to spend your time. There are multiple shooting ranges around the city which you can check out and sign up for lessons. Of course, it isn't easy, but nothing that's worth the time is easy.

2. Go on a vacation. Solo.

Travel solo, and don't travel for the sake of travelling. Travel to see new places, experience local cuisine, breathe new smells, see wonderful sights. Go where people don't usually go, like the North Eastern parts of our country, an entire region filled with breathtaking sights and friendly people.

So go ahead, put some kilometres on your soul.

3. Volunteer

Use your time to volunteer with the various NGOs across your city, doing your bit for the society and meeting like minded people. 4. Read a tonne of books

Perhaps one of the best things I did over my summer holidays back in the day was to spend whatever time I wasn't gaming on reading books. I devoured books, I adored the letters dancing on the paper and coming to life in my head. I went from J.K. Rowling to George RR Martin, Neil Gaiman, Andrzej Sapkowski, Cormac McCarthy, and the evergreen R.K. Narayan. All of this, and not even the tip of the iceberg.

Take inspiration from Whiplash and start learning how to play the drums, because there are too many guitarists and too few drummers in the world, and nothing can beat the sheer joy of producing pulse pounding beats on the drum kit.

IndianRaga, a digital arts education startup founded by IIT Bombay and MIT Sloan graduate Sriram Emani, has been giving the world of music some of the best classical music mashups, covers of popular songs and classical Indian dance since it's inception a few short years ago.

"Back in college, I was taking a class where the professor encouraged us to come up with a business plan. That was when I first charted plans for the initiative, and the rest is history," says Sriram.

Although initially, the program was only for the United States of America, Sriram talks about a large number of applications they started receiving from India, "Keep in mind that the application fee was over a hundred dollars, and yet we had applications pouring in from India. I contacted them and said, look, are you sure you want to apply, then bear the expenses of a flight ticket just for the fellowship? Founder and CEO Sriram Emani with one of the Creative Directors of the IndianRaga Fellowship, Mahesh Raghvan

Our conversation shifts to the IndianRaga Fellowship, discussing what it's about, "The idea is that there are people who aren't obviously good at everything. For instance, I've learned Carnatic music for 10 years, but I did not know how to collaborate with people, and it's important for one to collaborate and work as a team to create beautiful pieces of music. This is what the fellowship is about."

The IndianRaga Fellowship program is designed to select the best from the fields under the fellowship, which includes classical dance as well as music, who then will be asked to submit a traditional and a creative piece for the next round. Those selected in this round will be invited to Mumbai for 8-10 days where they get to collaborate with fellow finalists and create pieces of music like the one you see above, the Shape of You Carnatic Mix.

"People coming together, jamming and creating the best possible piece of music they can is beautiful. In today's world, this is also a great way to boost your profile as it shows that you can work in a team, and when you're applying to colleges abroad, the admissions committee would want to know not just how well your marks are, but how well rounded you are," Sriram says, elaborating on the fellowship.

According to reports in leading newspapers last week, over 275 engineering colleges across the country have applied to close down. In other words, almost 10% of all the engineering colleges in India are about to shut shop. Speaking at an event, the chairman of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) Anil D Sahasrabuddhe, said that the maximum number of colleges that have applied for closure are from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

txt
rich_1493722557324

According to him, the AICTE has been actively working on reducing the quantity of engineering colleges across the country, even going to the extent of reducing the penalty for closing down (which was the reason for many colleges that were willing to shut, but didn't). Since the early 2000s, the country has seen an exponential growth in the number of engineering colleges, with over 3300 colleges across the country. These colleges have a combined seat count of 1.4 million. With so many colleges consistently producing mediocre engineers, most of whom are not employable, the engineering phenomenon in the country seems to have lost its sheen.

The exponential growth of outsourcing in India took care of these engineering graduates by providing employment opportunities but just the way the IT bubble burst, the engineering bubble is also going to burst soon and according to various experts, startup bubble will also burst soon.

Adding to this is that most children born in the 80s and 90s ended up becoming engineers, owing to the great demand and employment opportunities; regardless of their personal interest, but most of them don't seem to want their next generations to become engineers, as there are a lot more opportunities and options available.

txt
rich_1493722702328

For students who are genuinely interested in engineering, this means lesser number of seats but on a big picture, this is good news as it means only the colleges which keep up certain educational standards, will survive. For parents of children who will enter colleges soon, this should be a wakeup call to not thrust them into engineering, with so many other options available.
"}]

It is said that humans are like books, everyone has their own story, but unless you flip open the cover and start reading, you don't really know what the story is. Keeping this in mind, back in the year 2000, Ronni Abergel and his brother Dany and colleagues Asma Mouna and Christoffer Erichsen started a human library as a project in Copenhagen, where people with stories to tell would be books, and readers could 'borrow' them and talk to them for a preset amount of time.

The Common Law Admission Test is an annual exam for admissions into 18 prestigious national law universities, with the responsibility of conducting the test shifting every year, falling on Chanakya National Law University, Patna this year.

1. Do not panic

3. Understanding Legal Aptitude and General Knowledge

The 50 mark section of the CLAT is perhaps the one where most students suffer. However, with the right amount of preparation and knowing what you should cover, you can tackle this section successfully without fear of losing marks to negative marking. Many experts believe that students panic and try to study all of IPC and CrPC, which is quite counter productive. The generally agreed upon consensus is that

Criminal Law

Indian Constitution

Contract Act

Law of Tort

are the most frequently asked questions in CLAT. So focus your energies properly and you're good to go.

As for GK, there's really no set syllabus for this, except that you should remember important events in recent history, awards given, medals won, UN's functioning and it's work. 4. Know thy question

There is negative marking in CLAT. 1 mark for right answer, -0.25 if you answer it wrong. However, if you leave it unanswered, you get 0 marks, which means it is much better to make an educated guess than to blindly mark the answer. If you don't know something, leave it as it is, there's no point losing marks over it.

It is always a pleasure to listen to stories of student bands that find success, but often people forget that the road to that success is long and arduous. We speak to one such student band that have no only honed their craft but are all set to perform at Hard Rock Cafe on May 4th.

Meet The Detour, a quartet band with Niteesh Kondiparthi and Aditya Ravikanti as the vocalists and guitarists, Sagar Ramchandruni as the bassist, and Akshay Kore on drums.

We caught up with the band preparing for their upcoming gig for a talk, here is what they had to say!

"We started quite recently, and this won't be our first time performing live on stage, we've all been in different bands before, performing live across Hyderabad, but this is the first time all of us are coming together as The Detour," says Niteesh Kondiparthi.

On being asked how he started his journey, 23-year old bassist Sagar Ramchandruni said, "I've always wanted to be a bassist, I knew back in college itself that this is what I wanted to do. I started learning in 2011 and haven't looked back since then. Since then, I've done shows across Hyderabad, and the upcoming show is going to be my 4th at Hard Rock Cafe, but first with The Detour."

Our conversation with Niteesh led to discussing the band's musical influences, "We're influenced a lot by classic rock. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Red Hot Chilli Peppers for example. However, with The Detour, we aren't restricting ourselves to strictly one genre; we also perform blues, sometimes regional songs" says Niteesh.

Akshay Kore, the drummer, only started learning how to play in December 2014, "He learned how to play and became proficient in a very short time," says Aditya Ravikanti, a student of B.Com at St. Mary's College, about the band's drummer.

We asked the band what their advice to their fellow students and peers would be. Niteesh responded by channelling Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl's quote about Nirvana, "We got together and jammed, and it sucked, but we eventually got better", whereas Aditya Ravikanti laughed and said, "If you think you've done enough practice, you're wrong."

Sagar further elaborated on their advice to students, "If you're a student band and you want to make it big, you've got to stick to the music you're making. No amount of making covers will help in telling you how you sound like. You can only find your sound when you're making music on your own. So go slow, and believe in yourself."
