The team of 30 students of Guru Nanak Institute of Technology have hit the limelight for emerging as winners in the 4th edition of Go-Kart Design Championship (GKDC) conducted by ISNEE - Indian Society Of New Era Engineers, Coimbatore. Team - Super Ignite - lead by D. Sai Charan, have beaten around 180 potential teams at this National Level competition. This event is fundamentally all about designing and fabricating a Go-Kart at very low expenditure. These city boys have made it to the top all by their effort.

As part of our student entrepreneur series, we actively seek out amazing entrepreneurs still pursuing their graduation and making waves in the startup universe. So today, we present Founder and CEO of Froogal, Jeevan Chowdary, a final year student at IIIT Hyderabad and founder of two startups.

"I was, to use the word, disappointed when I got into ECE at IIIT. I've always wanted to go into software development, play around with code, and this became a driving force for me through the months in college. I started teaching software to myself, slowly and surely, and decided to tough out my course," speaking about his life at college, "It was my passion for software that kept me going. Do note that I don't dislike Electronics, but the fact that this was not what I wanted to do didn't keep me down from chasing my passion."

Froogal enables cashless transactions for even the smallest of stores, but that isn't their unique selling point, "Most Kirana stores are not equipped with modern POS machines that let people go cashless at these places." He also further emphasised that Froogal wasn't out to become a digital wallet, but a digital loyalty, an app where you can carry your loyalty cards for various brands, all in one place.

"We launched Froogal because we saw a real need, especially in and around our college. Back in March, when this idea was born, we put the beta out exclusively for IIIT. The 1.0 version of the app came out in June, when we started spreading to areas around the college, Gachibowli mainly, and then across Hyderabad. Today, we are tied up with 1000 vendors across the city," says Jeevan, with a note of well earned pride in his voice, "our users have shot up after demonetization, for obvious reasons" he adds.

"It's the nature of the customer to always prefer places where they have incentives, this is a cornerstone in our drive behind the app. Today, we are a team of 20 people, and it does feel like I've come a long way since first being involved with the startup scene, with being the only one behind my earlier work, Shoppers Express, with a lot of help from friends, to becoming a fun place to work with Froogal, it's been an incredible journey" he says.

Jeevan Chowdary's advice to students looking to startup is inspiring, "Passion, perseverance, standing up and facing resistance are key to becoming a successful entrepreneur. I strongly believe that it is students who should take the initiative to startup, because as years go by and once you get out of college, you have a lot of responsibilities to handle, compared to the time when you are a student, when you have free time. Utilize this free time to build something for yourself, and you can't go wrong. Learn, adapt, come back stronger, these are the things you can do without fear when you're a student," says the young CEO, "this time is precious, and you will never get it again."

This video of an NRI student has gone viral over the last two days and it has an unnamed student in the United States ranting about the difficulties she faced in making ends meet. She speaks about how she's now disillusioned with the 'American dream', outlining how many students had to clean toilets and work as babysitters to earn a living.

While the video got many responses that can be stereotypically expected from Indian males, it actually talks a lot about the concept of privilege and about dignity of labour. The responses that one can see in the comments section of this video, clearly show the hypocritical mindset of many students, as most of them live in the same scenario; talk about similar things in their interpersonal conversations. It's only because this girl spoke about it openly, that she's receiving such responses; some are even going to the extent of calling her a bitch.

There, the concept of male-privilege can be highlighted, as some commentators are asking her why she went to the US when she could have gotten married and lived as a housewife; while others clearly seem outraged by the fact that a girl is speaking up.

The other privilege that is evident in the video is the privilege of having access to education. The two states of Telangana and Andhra send the highest number of students from India to the US every year; with over 30,000 full time students going in 2014 from Hyderabad alone and as of November 2016, over 2 lakh Indians were enrolled in American universities and institutes of higher education, accounting for a 14% increase, a report released by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said; with a large chunk from the Telugu speaking states. And most of these students later work in the computer and software sector in the US, or return home with their degrees to work in India.

This shows the number of students who have access to that kind of education but who still crib about having to sustain themselves while living abroad. The statement "haiga India lo undandi" (you can happily stay in India) in this video, reeks of that privilege; and calling babysitting as a "paaki pani" (dirty job), reeks of the typical Indian classist mentality.

Most of the students who go abroad to study, crib extensively about their lifestyles, having gotten used to a certain lifestyle here. Now the point here is not against having privilege; the point here is about realising that you have privilege and acknowledging it. It is also about the fact that these students have chosen to go there, chasing the American dream; so whatever the consequences are, they should live with them.

Another interesting fact is that most Telugu students who go there, hardly take advantage of the diversity of those universities; forming casteist groups, regional groups and more.

The message to every student is, understand the fact that you are among the handful of people (in the bigger scheme of things in our country) who have the privilege of having access to quality education, so make the most of it. And if you do choose to go abroad for higher studies, understand that there is nothing wrong in taking up any job to sustain yourself while studying. You are earning money, you are not stealing it.

Period.
"}]
The entire idea of Chetan Bhagat's 'One Indian Girl' is to reflect the mind set of successful woman who believes she is a feminist and discusses problems she faces, from being forced by her mother to get married to different judgments and opinions about her as a consequence of being modern woman.

The protagonist of this book is Radhika Mehta. She is a high-earning, successful investment banker who is opinionated, independent and not a virgin. She is unafraid to ask for what she wants in bed and, when the time comes, is able to pay for her own fancy destination wedding in Goa. Clearly, Bhagat’s first ever female narrator is a strong, who is looking for some professional and romantic fulfillment.

He captures perfectly the discomfort a modern woman might feel when she’s expected to act like a shy and obedient bride. She says all the right things about how giving women the right to choose is not enough but they need to have the right to choose the things they want, not what men want.

On the contrary, the author spends so much time trying to tell the readers that Radhika isn’t like the other girls and few reasons that make her stand out her that she is making a lot of money and has had sex before. But what annoys the reader the most is a fact that while the author believes his heroine is being a voice of a true feminist she is simply a woman with inflated sense of superiority, just because she makes more money than her peers.

In his earlier books Bhagat has been the voice of the younger generations which is probably one of the reason why he is now one among the popular commercial writers because they reach out to many and somewhere every youth finds a connect with story, and so this time he tried to be the voice of woman with lucrative career and one who is criticized for her opinions about relationships and her lifestyle. It could be a good read or a bad one as well.

It is definitely one of the good reads among Chetan Bhagat's books. If you are one among his huge fan-base then this will not disappoint you, you can buy the book by clicking here.

"}]

Not all books have the power to leave a lasting effect on their readers, and without any sort of bias, I can safely say that this one by Jean Sasson has cast a spell on me irrespective of the number of times I re-read it.This grippingly horrific tale takes us on a roller coaster ride of emotions throughout. It narrates the life of Princess Sultana, a direct descendant of the founder of the current Saudi monarchy, who apparently shared her ordeals with Sasson under an oath of secrecy. Her identity cannot be revealed and the reader will understand why, soon enough.

The gulf countries, especially the lives of the royal family are closely guarded. The amount of secrecy maintained in the matters of its women needs no mention. The world is enthralled by their lifestyle- what with unimaginable standards of wealth and grandeur. Yet, the women are caged, albeit in a gilded one.

The lines –

"The history of our women is buried behind the black veil of secrecy. Neither our births nor deaths are made official in any public record. The common emotion expressed at the birth of a female is either sorrow or shame."

leave a lasting impression in our minds since we too can somewhat identify with this emotion. The author intertwines the lives of the supporting characters so seamlessly that every line gives goose bumps. Behind the black veils, lie diverse characters, spirits and stories that are brought to life by the main protagonist. The gut wrenching narrative makes us question the term 'father', 'brother', 'husband' and the likes.

Princess sultana and the other women’s heart wrenching experiences and their rebellion makes us cry and cheer at the same time. While this is a must-read for people with an interest in nonfiction and life stories, I would strongly recommend it to everyone. It stirs the soul so much that one cannot help but be moved by the stories of these women.
