[{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1484042780842","data":"A racing car built by students of RVR & JC College of Engineering is all set to take part in the GoKart Design Challenge (GDC), a national level event at Coimbatore, that is being held next week. This car has been built by team Falcon Racers, led by Sri Kalyan; and will contest in various technical categories at the event. The team was conceived last year after Kalyan, who is now pursuing his third year of Mechanical Engineering from the college, took part in an event which required them to build an all-terrain vehicle (ATV).<\/p>"},{"type":"img","id":"img-uid-1484048553699","data":"5874c8dd8d004"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1484047283533","data":"\"I got the idea to build this after taking part in that event where we built an ATV. I learnt fabricating then and after that, I wanted to build at least two vehicles before I graduate and that is how Falcon Racers was born, explains Kalyan, adding, \"I then started recruiting and from all over the college, I handpicked 25 members and formed the team that designed and fabricated this car.\"<\/p>The car is powered by a 110 CC engine, similar to that of a Honda Activa and has an automatic transmission. They build the chassis out of Mild Steel. \"We purchased the engine from Indian Society of New Era Engineers (ISNEE) and built the chassis by ourselves. And to take part in the event, we first had to qualify the virtual round,\" says Kalyan. The virtual round was conducted in July 2016 and after qualifying that, they set about to the task of building the car; which was completed in two months.<\/p>"},{"type":"img","id":"img-uid-1484048568349","data":"5874c8ff51b64"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1484048106714","data":"It was no easy task for them to build the car as it cost them Rs. 2 Lakhs in all. \"We didn't get any sponsors or any funding. We paid for it all from our pockets. All our team members contributed for it and we built it,\" says Kalyan, who is the son of a farmer in East Godavari; later adding \"The biggest challenge was not building it. Funding it was what we found to be the toughest thing.\"<\/p>After this event, they are planning on taking part in the design challenge conducted by Fraternity of Mechanical and Automotive Engineers; an international event that is to be held in March this year. \"We built it and it is ready to take part in several competitions but even taking it there is a challenge for us as just the transportation will cost us at least Rs. 25000 - Rs. 30000. And to take part in the event in March, we need to replace the engine with a geared engine, which will cost us another Rs. 40000,\" shares Kalyan.<\/p>"},{"type":"img","id":"img-uid-1484048602141","data":"5874c91244a98"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1484048166992","data":"In the upcoming event, several engineering aspects (braking, acceleration, chassis strength, etc) of the car will be tested; before being allowed to drive it in an endurance round, as Kalyan explains \"After all the technical tests are done, we will be allowed to take part in the endurance round; which will involve driving a certain number of laps in a limited time.
