The shining star of Roja's album? The titular song you can listen below. The shining star of Roja's album? The titular song you can listen below. I realise that writing about the best Rahman songs is an impossible task, simply because of his sheer body of work, all of whom comprise of some of the best music ever created, so much so that his name has resonated in the halls of power of music across the world, also netting him an Oscar for his contributions to film music.

There are entire volumes that I could write about this fantastic and soft spoken man that has composed songs which can only be described as quintessentially Indian, not to mention a part of our psyche because of how much our society revolves around movies and film music. In the mountain of mediocrity that is Indian Mainstream Cinema, Rahman brings to it music that alleviates it to legendary status. It also helps that the movies Rahman has scored for also happen to be some of the most iconic movies ever made.

So, on his birthday, here's my list of the best 5 songs Rahman has composed, according to me.

1. Roja

What is even there to say about this song? If there's ever been anything like musical perfection, Red Hot Chilli Pepper's Stadium Arcadium, Metallica's '...And Justice For All', Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' and this movie's music album come the closest. The shining star of Roja's album? The titular song you can listen below. Of course, it has both Tamil and Hindi versions and while I strongly encourage listening to the Tamil version, I've linked the Hindi version below, because you know, wider audience and all.

Side note: Watch this movie, it's incredible.

2. Kehna Hi Kya From Bombay:

Mani Ratnam's Bombay is easily one of the best Indian movies ever made, with a fantastic plot and progression. Unlike regular Indian cinema, however, the music score in this movie is not a immersion and pacing breaking affair, but a character within itself, and who better to score for a movie like this than the Maestro himself?

Oh and this isn't even the best song in the album, this movie also features all time greats like Humma Humma. I'm particularly partial to Tu Hi Re, but this one is more iconic and frankly has a soft spot in my heart.

3. Munbe Vaa from Sillunu Oru Kadhal:

I frankly can't tell you much about this song, mostly because I don't speak Tamil, but that hasn't stopped me from being mesmerised by the fantastic music direction that powers the frankly melodious voices carrying the song. I don't care that this song is in Tamil, music has no language, especially when it is this beautiful.

Oh and I think Bhoomika Chawla is a fantastic actress.

4. Nahin Samne from Taal:

When I first watched this movie, I was very young and my parents had taken me to the theatre. I don't remember much of the movie, but I remember this song quite clearly. Funny how that memory works.

Nahin Samne is the quintessential heartbreak/sad song that can even go on to inspire you if you're listening to it at a beach and learning just to move on. It's such a fantastic song, 10/10 guaranteed goosebumps.

5. Saddaq Haq:

Rockstar has a plethora of fantastic songs but I chose Saddaq Haq for this list simply because it went on to become a rallying cry for young people fighting the power and also because Rahman enlisted the help of Orianthi Panagaris, a female guitarist from Australia who is, well, she's absolutely mind blowingly fantastic.

Orianthi, as she's known on stage, has been a student of some of the greatest guitarists in the world and it shows, she's an absolute beast of a guitarist and finishes Saddaq Haq with a power riff that I'm certain pushed whoever listened to that song to get off their backsides and fight the power themselves.

So yeah, this one is for you Orianthi, girl power!
