This seems to be a norm in Asian cultures, but overworking and staying late at work until your brain starts to look like tomato soup seems to be somewhat of an accepted trend, so much so that even your managers expect you to stretch and kill your mind body and soul and take on additional stress instead of spending quality time with your family just to get something done, something that can also be completed the following day.

Here's a radical thought, go home on time.

Shocking, I know, but what's so horrible about it? Just go home on time, go spend time with your family and friends and come back to work the next day with a smile. How is this possible, I hear you ask? Well, I'm going to let you in on a little secret.

Overworking is overrated.

There's simply no nobility in you staying late at work and killing your soul despite what society might think. Such pervasive and prevalent is this attitude that some of the most brilliant people I know have burned out and cannot be bothered to do their jobs anymore because of severe demotivation.

Not only does overworking kill your enthusiasm, there are even geniuses who not only overwork but also take on additional work because apparently they are gluttons for punishment. Here's another secret, nobody is going to hand you an award for being a glutton for punishment, the only reward you're going to get is a deepening sense of under appreciation and a lot of depression because it feels like you're ding everything in the office, even when that is not true.

Oh and of course there are companies that may appreciate you for working too much, that is just a trap because this is still a capitalistic society and as long as you're making money for the company, shams like 'best employee' award will be handed to you to ensure you keep killing yourself internally instead of living your life outside the confines of your office.

Live a little, ladies and gentlemen, always leave office on time.
"}]
Born on December 28, 1932, Dhirajlal Ambani would go on to become one of the most successful entrepreneurs of independent India, and became an inspiration for many an entrepreneur across the country and the world. Today, as we remember his achievements on his 86th birthday, let us take a look at the entrepreneurial lessons one can learn from Dhirubhai Ambani

1. Always remember your goals

Dhirubhai Ambani was focused on becoming successful, and had a treasure trove of ideas to work with. What set him apart from the rest of entrepreneurs of his time was that he never was satisfied with his position, and consistently worked towards reaching his goals. Steadfast and unwavering, thy name is Dhirubhai Ambani.

2. He was a risk taker

'A Ship in Harbor Is Safe, But that Is Not What Ships Are Built For' goes a saying, Dhirubhai was the embodiment of this. One of his early buisness ventures put him in a partnership with a man who wanted to play it safe, but Ambani would not stand for it, his first office had two attendants, three chairs, one small room and a table, and he started his career there, importing polyester from Yemen. 3. He had revolutionary ideas, wanted to give back to the country

Dhirubhai didn't just want to make a profit, he wanted India to be respected worldwide. His ideas allowed him to gain a much acclaim in practice after starting Reliance Industries, and one of these visions is the reason cell phone communication caught on in India, Reliance communication revolutionized the cell phone industry of the country, with Dhirubhai's dream of seeing every strata of society connected to cellular networks.

4. He had a great respect for his team

Dhirubhai understood the importance of having a good team for building his company, he focused on building a team that had brilliant ideas, ideas that he would patiently listen to and encourage. A mark of a truly good entrepreneur is how much you respect your team that builds and maintains the product for you, because often their ideas can drastically improve your services.

5. He understood the importance of innovation and adapted accordingly

The only constant in life is change, change of times brings changes and innovations in technology and new fields of study, Dhirubhai understood this well and was always willing to adapt. He saw an opportunity for a business according to the times and went through with it. It was this belief that led to the cell phone revolution in India, and today, with India being one of the biggest market for smartphones, we have Dhirubhai Ambani to thank for that. He strove to be greater than people could think of, and he had the grit, determination and the guts to go through with it, this is the reason why he is one of the biggest inspirational figures for students and entrepreneurs alike, across the world.

"Hey mom, why are some people bad?" asked my son, as we turned the TV off, away from reports of secret police knocking on people's doors and the media happily supporting the destruction of our fundamental rights.

I didn't know how to answer this question. How do you tell a 7-year old that men with power and privilege decide to play games with the lives of everyone else and there was nothing people like us could do about it. What would a 7-year old understand about power and privilege when he learns every day at school that everyone was born equal and is shielded by the discrimination anyone who doesn't look like him, doesn't share his skin tone, goes through?

"Because," I began, only to find that I couldn't find the words to say anything, I was tired of standing up for rights, "because there are people who think that doing bad things to good people will ultimately result in a better world."

"Does it?" he asks, his eyes round as coins.

"No," it was my husband, from across the room, "It does not, son."

I look at the two of them before continuing, "One must never hate someone for how they were born, because this is something we cannot choose. Those who do are bad and we must learn to protect ourselves from them."

My son nodded.

Creak...

I was hiding behind a desk that I had upturned in the gunfight that ensued when an enterprising individual, I'm sure, decided to take pot shots at me just as soon as I hand landed. Not only did it attract the attention of a group nearby, it seemed this group had automatic weapons. I chanced upon a grenade and threw it at the entrance hall, near the door where I saw the men pouring through.

There was silence and then there was the creak.

Unmistakable footsteps doing a terrible job at sneaking up the stairs. I had my ear to the floorboards and heard the thump of a pair of heavy boots as they carefully climbed the stairs, it would only be a matter of seconds before he would be in the same room as I was. It was now or never. No more hiding.

I did my best to run silently to the door, towards the sound of footsteps and hid behind the door, just at the edge of its opening. I barely had time to adjust when the man rushed through, checking his corners. He spotted me right away, but I was ready. Like clockwork, my left palm pushed the barrel of his SCAR-H away from me while with the right, I pulled back and sank a knife in his throat.

Blood gushed down my hand as the weight of his limp body fell on the knife. I pulled it out, picked up the SCAR, checked ammo and walked around the house. The grenade had taken out 2 people, with the third one lying dead upstairs. If I was to survive this island, I had to make life or death decisions constantly.

The PDA given to us showed me that the effective playable area was closing in and that I had 10 minutes to gather supplies and rush to the nearest safe playable zone at the earliest. Trying not to panic, I rushed through the house to find the three men who had come to shoot my first victim and me down to have tons of 7.62x51 NATO rounds for the SCAR-H I'd found, two rifle scopes, one that magnified 4x and one 2x, and a reflex sight for quick close quarters engagement, although I'd already made up my mind to use the knife for that fight.

When in close quarters, always bring a knife to a gunfight.

I also found a secondary weapon, a Submachine Gun named UMP-9 that used 9mm rounds, same as my pistol. In effect, it would be a pistol with a much higher rate of fire and greater recoil control, all of which I needed right now. The body near the door carried a backpack, some food, medicines and first aid kit. I put on their camo suits, bag, took their guns, pointed myself north and started moving.

It was time to leave.

It was time to survive.

Its holiday season and Christmas is round the corner, and everybody are busy decorating their trees and buying gifts for their dear ones.

Talking about Christmas, it is an annual festival commemorating the birth of the son of God, Jesus. Although it's celebrated on 25th of December every year, most scholars contradict the date of birth. His birthday is celebrated in December because that was the date of the Jewish Festival of Lights - the festival of Hanukkah. Nobody really knows exactly when Jesus was born. Some scholars believe that Jesus may have been born in spring or summer. He was born to a virgin named Mary. He was born with human flesh and blood, and lived a sinless life.

The God wanted to send his son to Earth to help people lead a life on the path of peace and love as the world was clouded in the darkness of envy and violence. He sacrificed his life for all of mankind, to condemn sins committed by the people of the earth, so that they can live a happy and just life.

Many of the popular Christmas traditions today, ranging from the Christmas tree to the stockings hanging over the fire place, found their roots in Saturnalia: Branches from evergreen trees were used during winter solstice as a reminder of the green plants that would grow in spring when the sun Gods grew strong. These evergreen branches became the foundation of our Christmas tree. Germans are thought to be the first to bring “Christmas trees” into their homes at the holidays and decorate them with cookies and lights.

The Christmas tree made its way to America in the 1830s but wasn’t popular until 1846, after Germany’s Prince Albert brought it to England when he married Queen Victoria. The two were sketched in front of a Christmas tree and the tradition instantly became popular. Royal fever was real even back then. The well-known reason we give presents at Christmas is to symbolize the gifts given to baby Jesus by the three wise men. But it may also stem from the Saturnalia tradition that required revellers to offer up rituals to the Gods.

One of the reasons we leave milk and cookies for Santa is because Dutch kids would leave food and drink for St. Nicholas on his feast day. Children would leave shoes out the night before and, in the morning, would find little gifts that St. Nicholas would leave them.

One night, St. Nicholas dropped a bag of gold down a poor man’s chimney so that his oldest daughter would be able to get married, and the bag fell into a stocking that was drying by the fire; and this is how hanging stocking over the fire place has become a part of the Christmas tradition.

Though various traditions of celebrating Christmas has different stories which goes way back in time, it makes the festival more joyful and exciting keeping the motive of celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ constant.

Complements of the season and Merry Christmas to everyone.

"}]
“Why do you want to celebrate your birthday?” this was the question which changed my thought process about celebrating. Once on my birthday, I was very excited to celebrate with my friends. Unfortunately, no one turned up and that made me feel so bad and ruined my whole birthday mood.

Oh yes, you might be thinking that am not a kid to be disappointed for such reason. But yes, I was disappointed because I expected and planned to have a lot of fun and nothing happened.

When I was feeling low, I had a talk with my brother and I shared everything with him. He didn’t tell me anything at that moment rather he patiently listened to me.

One fine day I got a letter from stuMagz saying am an avenger from then and then my brother told me that” this is a thing to celebrate, You celebrate when you achieve something, Just getting birth and passing years is not a big thing to celebrate, In fact, you must be scared because you are becoming older without achieving anything.”

Then I decided not to celebrate any day unless I achieve something.

No, am not against celebrations. Absolutely not. But in my view, there is no point in celebrating your birthday.

When you pass in a subject in which you have no confidence go and celebrate it because that’s your achievement.

When you get a job celebrate it, when you gain some confidence celebrate it, when you understand what is life celebrate it.

I agree, when you are a kid you will be so excited to wear a new dress on your birthday and take chocolates to school and share them with friends. At least stop it after you are out of teens. When you achieve something which you were dreaming of the whole life, wear a new dress, share chocolates, sweets and whatever you want. Celebrate it like there is no other big thing.

I am not telling you to save your money and help others because it’s up to you how you spend your money. But celebrating a day which is making you a year older is pointless my friend.

Just think about it.
"}]
Terminal Velocity

I remember being taught about terminal velocity in school, learning that when an object was dropped from a great height, it would end up assuming a top speed while falling towards the earth. It wasn't possible for any object in the world to exceed that speed no matter the mass.

It was a funny thought to think as I was hurtling towards the ground at terminal velocity, having been pushed out of the plane transporting the prisoners to this death island where everyone would kill each other with guns, machetes, knives and even frying pans.

The moment of reflection faded as rapidly as I was falling, I put my arm behind me and started groping for the ripcord to open the parachute. For one very brief second, one that felt like an eternity, I thought I didn't have a ripcord, but then I found it and pulled hard.

The jerk one feels as the parachute gathers air and slows you to a safe descent is vastly underreported in many action movies, it is quite jarring and sudden and can leave you disoriented for a second. I had just about gathered my wits and spotted a place to hide on the ground and possibly look for supplies that two different prisoners zoomed past me, headed straight for the ground.

The place I was going to land in was not safe anymore, I could be killed the instant I took off my parachute. Sure enough, a few hundred feet below me, the two prisoners opened their parachutes and made a beeline to a scatter of houses in the country side. I pulled my weight and pushed the parachute forward, landing some distance away next to an isolated farm house with a couple of outhouses and a storage area.

No sooner had I landed, I felt a bullet graze my left leg. I crouched, ready to pounce like a tiger and hoping that the thick parachute bag would cushion the next bullet, the gunshot I'd heard was of a 9mm pistol, 'Not much penetrating power,' I thought to myself and sure enough, another gunshot followed a sharp pain on the back, but the bullet hadn't pierced the skin. I wasn't even sure if it was going to leave a bruise.

As soon as I crouched and heard the second gunshot, I was already half way out of the bag's safety straps. I dived for cover just in time before the third shot ran out and hit the wall above my head. I desperately needed a weapon.

"You don't have to do this!", I yelled, desperately, foolishly, assuming there was still humanity left in the world.

The man just laughed.

"I'm going to kill you and use your body as bait to trap other players," he sang, in his terrible voice, "I'm going to drag your goddamned corpse all over this island and use it whenever I can and there is nothing you can do about it."

They say necessity and desperation are the mothers of invention and change. If I was to survive this island, I needed to become one of them, I needed to become a killer.

I found a rock lying on the floor where I was crouched behind some cover, broken off after the unknown man's bullet hit the wall behind me. I chucked it out of my cover only to be met with more gunfire, but this time, the position had moved. He was coming into the house I was trying to sneak in.

It was now or never.

Knowing there was no point in walking silently, I ran full tilt into the house's various rooms, deciding that if I didn't find something, I'd at least throw myself at the attacker and surprise him. I dashed to the upper floor of the house and grabbed the first thing I could see, a sturdy cast iron frying pan.

The door in the downstairs landing burst open and the man charged in, bellowing insults and taunting me to come out. I called out, "I'm up here, come and get me."

Bloodlust is a funny thing, it can make you think you're the king of the world when the truth is someone better than you will always shoot your face off if you challenge them. The man rushed up the stairs and fired towards the corners he couldn't see past, in hopes of scaring me. What he didn't know that I'd climbed up to the attic and just as soon as he came under the attack door, I leaped from the attic to the second floor landing with a yell and smashed the pan over his head.

When the man came to, I had already stolen his equipment. He had found an assortment of first aid medicines and bandages developed by the current government's fascist doctors that healed wounds quickly, enough to keep going in battle. What else does a fascist government need except soldiers that do not know how to die? Fortunately, the man that tried to kill me was not one of those soldiers.

"Wha..." he stirred, before panicking and seeing that I was pointing his gun at him.

"No, please, don't shoo-"

BLAM!

The smell of cordite and the unmistakable tang of metal that blood carries fills the room. If this island was made to make me a killer, by pulling that trigger I had given it what it wanted.

And killer I would be, because I had to escape, I had to bring those responsible for this to justice, I had to gather the best equipment I could find in this place and smuggle them out to aid in my escape. I had a lot to do in a world where my existence was ready to be ceased by one enterprising individual hiding in a bush with a sniper rifle.

A crash, followed by a smoke grenade in the room I was in threw caution to the winds. The smoke was followed by staticco bursts of unmistakable carbine fire. I had attracted attention and judging by the voices, there were more than one.

As I fell to the ground, my hand found something unmistakably round and heavier than its size. It had a pin that I pulled before throwing it down the stairs towards the doors as the people rushed in to the building.

There was a loud explosion as the grenade exploded, then nothing.

Glorious silence.

To be continued.
"}]
Dear Self,

At the risk of sounding incredibly silly and redundant, allow me to say this: of the whole wide world, you are the only one who knows me best, simply because we are one and the same. This is not some movie or video game where my future self comes back to warn my past self of what'll happen, but this is me writing a letter to myself, telling myself that I'm proud of who I am and that I know I can be better.

I know you tell me that you're not a loser and I know that to be true, but suffering is the curse of every living being, whether physical, mental or both depends on the circumstances of one's birth and how one lives their life.

You've always been my true supporter, in fact, from the very first second I life was breathed into me. I know I can be an ungrateful person and not treat you well because I'm acting out against certain injustices that I believe were done to me but I remember, my dear old self, I remember that you will always be around and that by lying to you, I'm making the worst mistake I can possibly make in my life.

I'm not going to ignore you, neither am I going to lie to you from hereon. From now, it's me and you as we take the bull by the horns and live life like it was meant for us.

Love,

You.

December 22nd is celebrated as National Mathematics Day in honor of eminent mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, the man who believed the subject was something of a divine experience for him, as he famously said, "An equation means nothing to me unless it expresses a thought of God."

Let's be honest, we all know how much Mathematics has troubled us in our lives, both for engineers and degree students, even more for those who decide to study pure mathematics. So today, on the National Mathematics Day, let us take a look at the toughest concepts Mathematics has to offer to students who dare try and understand it.

1. Eigenvectors

Before we begin, from all of us at stuMagz, we understand the pain and suffering of mathematics, especially if you're studying the night before the exam (and let's be honest, we know you are), and one of the most frustrating topics to master in such a short time period (and even over a course of a few months) are Eigenvectors.

The problem with Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues is not it's difficulty, which frankly speaking, is not that difficult, but the sheer annoyance of solving a problems that run up to 4 to 6 pages, carefully checking for mistakes, because even if you bungle one small sign in the solution, you'll still get an answer, except it'll be the wrong answer and you'll loose marks, and if that isn't annoying then we don't know what is. All your effort in the exam gone to waste, with the worst thing being that you still believe you got the right answer until the results show up.

2. Differential Equations:

There are people who honestly enjoy solving differential equations, keep an eye out for them, they are probably insane (and you'll need their help the right before the exam).

Differential equations can be quite enjoyable if you manage to remember the different forms of differential equations and how to solve them, but that can be a pain to remember and often leads to many mistakes as one solution is used for another form of D.E.

Unlike Eigenvectors, however, you can quickly tell if a differential equation solution is getting out of hand, as different methods of solving it can lead to some really crazy results. This doesn't, however, help you save time, and it is still quite annoying, we do not recommend studying this the night before the exam, you need practice for this.

3. Triple Integration:

Coming back to something closer to home, every engineering student has gone through the trouble of studying for the M1 exam, and perhaps the toughest nail to hit in that subject, (and believe us there are more than one), has to be triple integration. It's not that it's difficult to learn, but it is very difficult to master as the multiple integrals in the question can sometimes throw you off your calculations, and perhaps the biggest problem with this topic is that you keep doubting yourself, and the self doubt leads to more mistakes than you had previously made. Just, pure annoyance.

4. Probability Theory:

Our staff seems to hate Probability with a passion, and hence it makes this list at No. 4, because this is a list of subjects that almost made you punch yourself to sleep. A professor once describe probability as an easy topic to learn, which people seem to have trouble with, we bet he wasn't really popular with the students. That being said, according to Wikipedia, Probability theory is the branch of mathematics concerned with probability, the analysis of random phenomena. The central objects of probability theory are random variables, stochastic processes, and events: mathematical abstractions of non-deterministic events or measured quantities that may either be single occurrences or evolve over time in an apparently random fashion. It is not possible to predict precisely results of random events. However, if a sequence of individual events, such as coin flipping or the roll of dice, is influenced by other factors, such as friction, it will exhibit certain patterns, which can be studied and predicted. Two representative mathematical results describing such patterns are the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem.

It's applications are various, from predicting the weather, to predicting statistics (Probability and Statistics students, we are not jealous of you), even predicting the outcomes of card games, to cybersecurity and cryptography.

5. Fourier Transforms:

Every engineer's favorite chapter to skip before the exam, Fourier Transforms decomposes a function of time (a signal) into the frequencies that make it up, in a way similar to how a musical chord can be expressed as the amplitude (or loudness) of its constituent notes, and no, we made neither head nor tail of what that means. Very few engineering students decide to study this while in college, and only the brave or the reckless dare touch this topic the night before the exam. It's applications include analysis of differential equations and Quantum Mechanics, so if you are interested in these fields, all we can say is, if it was easy, it wouldn't be worth it.

Say what one might may about Mathematics, underestimating this subject is often a student's doom. Do your duty, warn your juniors about the dangers of Mathematics before they are hit with the full extent of it.

Joking aside, Mathematics is truly an intriguing topic, and the feeling of understanding concepts as you study it is exhilarating. The subject has also humbled us and awed us at the sheer brilliance of Srinivasa Ramanujan, the Man Who Knew Infinity, who made Mathematics look easy. Happy National Mathematics Day!
"}]
Why do students cheat in examinations?

As a student, this could be the question that annoys you the most. The answer is simple; students do not want to fail.
What most of us do not realize is that cheating is not an action that produces bad repercussions but that cheating is a consequence of the failure of the education system as a whole.

India needs to change the way it teaches and this has become a dire need, now more than ever.
We are not taught so that we learn but are instead taught so we can get good marks. In the end, everything comes down to how well a student has performed in his examinations paying zero to no attention to how he got there in the first place.

Teachers are trained to constantly drill the lessons into their heads and to brain-wash these students into thinking that examinations are all that matter.
We have forgotten how to learn, for the sake of learning itself. For the pure joy that is derived from learning something new but instead, learning has now become an obligation. There is no joy derived from learning anymore but fear. This fear and anxiety rendezvous to create a terrible atmosphere for the student. He has to not only mug up facts, repeat answers, take the teacher for word, complete the enormous amounts of homework but has to now also deal with a kind of mental agitation that he hasn’t been prepared for. It comes as no surprise that most suicides committed in India are by students. Their minds have been bred with this fear for so long that puerility has become a pervasive attitude even when they enter the college atmosphere. They continue to play the same school-boy persona that they have donned for themselves which in the long run only leaves them to take up dead-end jobs with no goals or desires.

The school system must begin to help students understand the value of learning only for the sake of learning. To create an expectation of failure or success only leaves them ruthlessly competitive, cheating off of each other’s papers with no originality. Critical thinking must be encouraged among students and they must be allowed to pursue their dreams with no hindrance from the authority. Interests in a particular line of study must be cultivated at a young age and their dreams recognized and paid attention to. They must be taught that their efforts count even despite the results.

I truly believe that a change in education will surely bring about a change in the country.

"}]
Christmas is time for family, even in our country where kids are given holidays and asked to run around the house and make some noise but if you've lived with kids you basically know that they'll bring the house down if left free. What better way then, to distract the little tykes from their penchant of destruction than to put on movies on the giant TV you bought and sit down to watch it together? Here's a list of my top 5 favourite Christmas movies for the whole family, starting at Number 5

3. It's A Wonderful Life

This movie has a special place in my heart, specially because it was written before American involvement in the Second World War and the movie made and released the year after the war ended, setting the tone for the future of the world with a heartfelt movie which is now considered the most loved movie in America and also a Christmas time staple. While there are some elements that may not translate as well into Indian context, this 1946 film is still a must watch.

2. Home Alone

Who doesn't love Home Alone? I'm yet to meet a single person that thinks Home Alone is a bad movie. It is the pinnacle of Christmas Movies, where one young but extremely resourceful boy is left behind by his family by accident and the boy is left fending off two determined robbers using every trick up his sleeve. I've grown up watching Home Alone and it remains just as hilarious as it was back then. A must watch!

1. Die Hard

Yippie Ka Merry Christmas.

Bruce Willis's claim to fame, one of the most iconic action films ever made and also now considered the quintessential Christmas movie despite its very adult themes which are completely not suitable for children, Die Hard routinely finds itself at the number 1 position of many Christmas time movies list around the world. Watch the rest of the list with your family, but watch this one on your own or with friends. Die hard, baby!

The cold night air witnessed his mood swings from a face with fright to a smiley at the instant it cleared the fog. The moon lit her hair with his divine light. She stammered in a low pitch “sure of this?”

“Yes!” he whispered in an excited voice.

As soon as the frozen legs started moving their eyes ceased blinking to capture their fresh look of the ever so forbidden road. The birds resting on the trees right of the road woke up startled to hear the beats of two pride fueled human hearts. The road glittered in the shower of moonlight.

Her periodic suspicious lookbacks made the sweetheart squirrels to stop their gameplay and run towards their homes. “They look so… happy out here, that’s totally weird!” “It’s simply because they are not taught to be afraid of ghosts,” he answered. “You mean like us?” she broke through. He continued “They don’t even know what a ghost is. It’s us, the only race on earth that is afraid of ghosts.”

They continued straight down the long road. The air breezing past them brought out tremors in their body. The faintly visible giant structure of concrete not so far away increased their beat rates. They hurried to have a look at it. The cracked concrete walls bled green fungi. Bats sheltered in the curved corners. The tiny threads which came out of a spider’s body decorated the building artfully. It was just the place that would scare a person out of his soul. “I have heard of this!” she spoke slowly. “It’s a bit long and interesting too” she stopped hoping he would ask her to continue. He smiled saying “we have all the time.”

Any Idea what the story might be?
