A culture is an ever shifting flux of practices by a people, that represent who they are and where they come from, and considering the vast size and various cultures in our country, it seems only fair that when you're far away from home in a place where the culture is familiar yet so unfamiliar, you take matters into your own hand and represent where you come from. This is what Sumanth Borra does at Lovely Professional University. We caught up with the singer, songwriter, musician, rapper and priest Sumanth Borra for a chat.

"The idea is simple, I wanted to represent the culture I come from in the university," says the Third Year Electronics and Communications student at Lovely Professional University, "It started with my own, Telugu culture, first, but slowly we expanded to representing the cultures of the other South Indian states."

Sumanth Borra has now become the de-facto go to guy at LPU for all issues related to South Indians. But getting to where he is now was not easy, "I learned singing and music when I was a child, with some periods of inactivity involved due to focusing on studies, but this is the best way I know of taking my culture to those who want to be acquainted with it. Music, as such, is a tool that preserves our culture in the North, and it has given me so much" he says.

Sumanth's musical career began as a child, "There were Balostavs held when I was a child, these were state level competitions, and I finished in the top 10. Later on, in college, I participated in Intra College competitions in which I've been finishing in the top 3 ever since" he says. For some context, Lovely Professional University has well over 20000 students and has a number of branches. On top of this, Sumanth's performances are almost always in Telugu.

"I've found that people don't really connect to class songs, so I focus on writing and singing mass songs, you know songs that connect with the masses," he explains, "and people love it, and it's quite amazing to see it happen."

Sumanth finished 20 performances in his first year alone, and as of today, he's done 85 performances, the latest one happening in the final week of March, two weeks ago.

Sumanth spoke empathetically about fellow students from South India coming all the way to the North at LPU, studying so far away from their homes, talking about their inspirations and motivations, "My goal is to make sure nobody has to struggle as much as I did to gain a foothold. I believe in creating my own opportunities instead of waiting for one, and I want people around me to do the same. As for me, my motivations were pretty simple in the beginning, my college gives attendance for events, but later it became something bigger than me, a movement, a place for us to identify with, and that puts a responsibility on us. Thus, we carry on, for the art of music and for the students so far away from their homes" he concludes with a smile.

I've been pondering over how to get this message across the people in the form of an article without sounding preachy or angry, eventually realising that there is no easy way to talk about this. The arbitrary value placed on our marks supported by an educational system that accounts into only one way of teaching, and cultivated by parents who want to see their children come out on top no matter what they do, so they can live vicariously through them.

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong in a parent wanting their child to succeed, but what if their definition of success is not the same as the child's definition of success? Nobody cares about what the child thinks.

When I was in school, I played a ton of video games and still managed to study enough to score pretty decent marks, but it was never enough for my teachers and society. My parents, thankfully, were okay with the marks I got, but my neighbours made it a point to rub it in because I didn't get 95% and instead got a 'measly' 90%. I mean what on Earth happened to us that we as a society consider 90% a terrible score?

My performance started dropping when I was in college, I hated Engineering, hated it with everything I had in me, every fibre of my being. I hated it so much I became sick with all the hate I was feeling, and there was no vent to it because I felt there was nobody to talk to about it. Nobody cared that I wasn't interested in Engineering, but they were quick to tell me what to do instead of actually telling me to stop and follow whatever passions I had.

I'm not completely guilt free here, at this point I had no ambition, my will was broken, I didn't know what to do, all I knew was that I was good at playing Video Games and writing about it.

The reason for this story is to highlight one of the many issues I have with our education system: the marks I got could not quantify what I wanted to do, what I was good at. They were just arbitrary numbers on a piece of paper that we attach importance to. I know that you are being criticised everywhere you go, but let me tell you that your marks sheet will never tell you what you are good at, except that you're good at memorising words in a book and writing them as is on a piece of paper in the exam.

India has several problems, from people growing up without a single shred of individuality to people putting too much importance on things that should not even matter in a modern society. But no matter what happens, nothing will change if you don't change. The excuse that nobody else will change fails because that is used as a crutch to justify your own behaviour. Change will always start from you, and in a society like ours where breaking rules and justifying it saying everyone is doing it is the norm, following strict regulations set for yourself is a revolution on its own.

Who you are, what you can do, and where you'll be in a few years are not defined by the marks you get, but by what you can do and how far you are willing to go to achieve your dreams. Don't let anybody else tell you otherwise.

Equality and equity are terms often confused to be the same but while these concepts are related, there are also important distinctions between them. Equality aims to promote fairness by substantiating the situation to everyone from the same place. Equity appears unfair, but it actively moves everyone closer to success by “leveling the playing field.”

Let’s try to establish a better perspective between these two relations. For instance, take three individuals who vary in height, one tall, medium, and short, standing on three stools of the same height. It is obvious that while they stand on top of the stools, they will still be of different heights when compared to each other. This idea is known as “equality” since all three individuals are given the same thing or opportunity, which in this case is one stool to each. Now, take the stool from the tallest person and present it to the smallest person amongst the three. The new observation would fall into the concept of “equity” since the height is instantly fair between all three even though the number of stools differ between each individual.

Throughout the ages, the principles of equality and equity have been a subject of great confusion mainly due to their marked similarity in definition. Even though both terms aim to spread uniformity, knowing the difference can be useful within different circumstances in order for one to effectively address them.

"}]
Omnipresent

Goodness, here you are

Yet again, haunting me.

You're here, with me, always. When I'm trying to make a decision

To move on with my life

To let go

Let it be

And just be.

Exist.

I may not be happy, nor sad, but i don’t want you taking it all away from me.

You're here, making me contemplate, over think various scenarios with what ifs

You're here and thoughts consume my head and voice, oh my goodness I stutter like never before. Panting, trying to hold back the thoughts, tears and panic.

Sweeping me off of my feet, picking me up so high and making me drown in your empty pain.

Peace that i have, is taken away by you.

Stayed awake nights together, unaware of what to do to make you go away, but you were sleeping right next to me.

You're here!

No, I don't want you to be.

When things go right, you're here. I'm content, momentarily, yet you find a way to ruin it.

By being here.

By saying, maybe I'm not good enough, maybe I could've done better, maybe there are better ways to do something, maybe this isn't something that I deserve.

I ignore your presence, but you find way to come back here and stay with me throughout.

But don't you think, you have to step back now?

Yes you're omnipresent. But no. I don't want you to be. You should!

Go away, I don't want you.

Dear, anxiety of mine stop taking my life away from. Get away.

I'm content or not, I don't need you to ruin me.

No, I do not want to give you the power to make me want to kill myself.

I will not give you that power to destroy me.

Go, anxiety. This is enough. Go.

I want my life.

And not you.

Goodbye, anxiety, I'll never let you take me over.

Thank you for being here.
"}]
In a vast country like India, with several cultures and traditions, the food cuisine changes every 100 kilometres. No matter the mood, no matter how low a person feels, good food can always work as one of the best anti-depressants.

1.
Pani Puri

Here is one Pani Puri bandi near VBIT college which is famous for Pani Puri. Lakshmi Bandi in Medipally. He makes amazing Pani Puri's.
Pani puri a.k.a Gol Gappa is perhaps the all time favourite of teenagers and adults all alike. It's not just food, it comes with an emotion. No matter how hard you try it's difficult to find any two Pani Puri stalls where the Pani Puri tastes the same. As the huge puri stuffed with some stuffing and filled with the legendary Pani struggles to enter your mouth in one piece and then breaks into several immediately after it enters, the happiness you get as the delicacy slides through your food pipe and reaches your stomach is probably unmatched.

2.
Kulfi

Deccan Ice cream Parlour in Ramanthapur made everyone's heart melt like an ice cream with their amazing Kulfi's.
Kulfi is another summer favourite for most people, in the scorching summer heat, it is a moment of bliss to see a kulfi stall and get your hands on. The soothing feeling as you lick the kulfi and caress it with your tongue, that calmness you feel, which relieves you of all the irritation caused by the scorching sun is just different from that of an ice-cream.

3.
Dosa

Rama Dosa point in boduppal, near the Depo. Panneer Dosa is really famous in this food point.
Dosa is my personal all time favourite and I keep looking for different types of Dosa everywhere I go. From the conventional Masala Dosa that you find everywhere to the Royal Butter-Cheese dosa at Ram Ki Bandi or the Schezuan Dosa at the Dosa Place in Madhapur, which is a marvel by itself, serving 111 different varieties of Dosa at one place.

4. Sweets

Coming to sweets, no one can deny them. 'Baasundi' in Agra sweets near uppal makes people go crazy.
"}]
Cosplay is defined as a mix of the two words, costume and play: people dress up as their favourite characters from video games, TV shows, anime or manga, and even books, as a show of appreciation, expressing your love and admiration for the character and the body of work they come from. Originating in the 90s in Japan, it slowly spread across the world, becoming a mainstay of fan conventions, like Comic Con. The Indian cosplay scene didn't see a spurt of growth until Comic Con started spreading across cities in the country, and today, with regular cosplayers earning themselves legions of fans, there is one cosplayer who has been called The Cosplay Queen of India.

Meet geek, gamer and professional cosplayer Aorin Shariyari. We catch up with her for a chat about her career and the cosplay scene in general.

"I started cosplaying in 2011, at anime con. It was my first ever cosplay," says Aorin upon being asked about when she started cosplaying, "and since then it has been a constant in my life. Even as a student, I used to take the time off from books to do cosplay stuff."

Today, Aorin works for NODWIN gaming as a professional cosplayer, which is to say, she earns her living by designing costumes based on characters from a medium, and pulls it off in style, and she started at a time when very few in India had heard about cosplay. We ask her what she thought about the nascent state of the cosplay scene in India, and she replies, "I wouldn't say nascent, I'd say underdeveloped. However, in the last 5 years there has been a tremendous amount of growth in the scene."

Aorin speaks about how she overcame depression with the help of cosplay, "I wanted to focus my energies on something creative, and that's why I love cosplay so much. The will to create something beautiful from scratch and rather than letting the sadness drive you crazy is a powerful thing" she says. I would like to take this moment to tell our readers that depression is a silent killer, and if you know someone going through depression, please make sure you are there to talk with them.

We ask Aorin about her hobbies and what she does in her free time, when she's not working on a cosplay, "Free time? Is that German for sleeping?" she jokes, "Just kidding. I hardly get any me time, I have pets to take care of and a house to maintain. I have to be very particular about taking care of my health, so it can get quite hectic. However, when I'm not cosplay, I'm either cuddling with my dogs, playing video games, reading and sometimes painting."

We ask her if she sees herself cosplaying 5 years from now, and she laughs, "I don't even know what I'm going to do 5 days from now! My life now revolves around my work and it's part of who I am. I didn't expect to be here 5 years ago either so I'm not going to guess and let time surprise me."

In conclusion, we ask her for her advice on people who are on the fence about cosplay, a more personal question than a pertinent one, and she says, "Don't hold back, cosplay is amazing, as long as you remember to have fun. There's nothing quite like it" she finishes.

With the cosplay scene having grown rapidly over the last 5 years and showing no signs of stopping, Aorin Shariyari is an example to students on how your passion can be your profession, if you pursue it without a flicker of doubt in your mind.

The Fitbit Blaze is a hybrid between a smart watch while bringing to you the benefits of owning a fitbit, all in a stylish and sleek looking package and is sure to attract attention and start conversations. So what exactly is good about this? Read on to find out.

txt
rich_1491729105005

Features:

The standard Fitbit features make a come back, now with smartphone support where you can read notifications on the go without having to dig your pocket for your phone and fish it out. Technology is, after all, for our convenience.

The heart rate monitor on the Blaze has seen massive improvements from the time it first came out. Subsequent updates have fixed inaccuracy issues, and it stays pretty much accurate under light amount of stress on the body, however, users have reported the BPM output to be locked at 150 following a heavy workout or a run, a sign of things going haywire. It just shows that while it might not always be accurate, it is functional and a great way to measure your heartrate 24/7.

My favourite part of this device is the sleep insights. As someone who has had difficulty sleeping, the Blaze measures your sleeping patterns and eventually starts offering advice regarding the very same. It is quite useful and if implemented by you, can help you in improving your sleep cycles.

It even has preset workouts that you can follow, and with the companion app it can offer great insights in what works and what doesn't work for your body. Combined this with the fact that, despite it's bright screen and various functions, the battery lasts 5 full days before requiring a full recharge, which is quite impressive, to say the least.
