Though there is no occasion for a holiday in the month, but there is one date that we all should remember & celebrate; 26th July. On this day 19 years ago in the year 1999, the Indian Armed Forces got victorious over Pakistan In the “battle of KARGIL”. <\/p>\n","id":"1532623542928","type":"txt"},{"data":"The war took place in the Kargil district of Kashmir valley along the Line of Control (LOC) at a height of 18,000 feet. The cause of the war was the infiltration of Pakistani soldiers disguised as Kashmiri militants into the Indian side of the LOC. On 3rd May, 1999, some local shepherds noticed some activity in the mountains of Kargil area and informed the Indian Army. They reported presence of some heavily armed people building posts and occupying bunkers thereby. Thus, the Indian Government responded with Operation Vijay, a mobilisation of several troops & regiments of Indian Army & Paramilitary forces, including several squadrons of the Indian Air Force. The total number of soldiers involved was close to 30,000. <\/p>\n","id":"1532623542929","type":"txt"},{"data":"5b59f90180987","id":"1532623542929","type":"img"},{"data":"Indian Navy launched Operation Talwar to block the Karachi port during Kargil war to cut off supply routes to Pakistan. The Navy began aggressive patrols, thus exploited Pakistan's dependence on sea-based oil and trade flows. Whereas, the Air Force's Operation Safed Sagar played a major role in the war where for the first time, air power was used at the height of 32,000 feet above the sea level. The IAF made its strong presence in the region by deploying 69 frontline aircrafts. We lost 2 fighter jets & 2 choppers as well.  <\/p>\n","id":"1532623542929","type":"txt"},{"data":"5b59f90e853eb","id":"1532623542929","type":"img"},{"data":"The Army recaptured all the points, especially Tololing & Tiger Hill in a very impressive manner. Around 250 guns were used to provide artillery support to its infantry and ground troops. The Bofors field howitzer played a vital role in securing top positions and gaining control over the infiltrated space. After the body of Indian martyr Captain Saurabh Kalia was badly mutilated along with 5 other soldiers of the patrolling party, Indian forces were not at all in a state to show mercy to Pakistan. <\/p>\n","id":"1532623542929","type":"txt"},{"data":"5b59f91ee5598","id":"1532623542930","type":"img"},{"data":"On July 14 both sides ceased the fire & the Army’s ‘Operation Vijay’ was declared a success. On July 26 Indian Army announced complete eviction of Pakistanis from the Indian side of LOC. Thus 26th July is marked as “Kargil Vijay Divas”. Around 500 Officers & Soldiers got martyred, Captain Vikram Batra, Lieutenant Manoj Panday, Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja & many more.
