The recent death of Air Commodore Sanjai Chauhan creates another dent in the Indian Air Force. Crashing his Jaguar in Gujarat, there have been reports that the officer refused to eject and maneuvered the plane to a safe area so that no one else could be harmed. Though lives of many were saved, India lost another one of it's decorated Air Force officers . A high level inquiry has been ordered but nothing is expected from it as usual, because like every time, an engine failure or pilot error will emerge as the reason for the crash. But this is not a new case. Plane crashes are regularly reported by the Air Force, which is not at all acceptable. For an economic giant like India, it cannot afford to lose officers in mere air crashes, and absolutely not in test flights.

A fortnight ago, another crash was reported in Jammu and Kashmir where an IAF chopper crashed. Many more crashes are regularly reported from areas like Northeast, etc. And why not? The government is to be completely blamed for these horrific incidents. Air Force Pilots go through a rigorous training regime during their training days and their fitness level and flying tests are regularly held. So one cannot state that each crash is due to Pilot error. The Jaguar is nearly four decades old. Air Commodore Chauhan was on a regular training flight on the Jaguar when it crashed. The main question which arises here is that what was such an old machine doing in their fleet? The government has cut it's defence spending in the last budget without any explanation. And that too in these crucial times when it is having tense relations with it's neighbouring countries. Not that any war would be waged soon, but one should always be prepared for any crisis.

Any defence deal in India has to go through many hurdles. Bureaucrats, finance problems, and political pressure are one of the many reasons. But the main cause of worry here is that no one is really paying any heed to the accidental air crashes that are occurring frequently in India. The recent crash will be forgotten in a few days, the officer would be remembered as a hero, and then life would continue as usual. But what about prevention? The planes in the Air Force's fleet should be thoroughly checked regularly for any anomalies. Old machines should be immediately replaced. One wonders when any concrete decision will be taken by the government in this regard.

Unfortunately hypocrisy has become quite prominent in Indian films and among actors these days. Recent films like Veere Di Wedding lives up to the above claims. In these turbulent times when people constantly discuss about issues like gender discrimination, poverty, corruption, etc. films like these fuel up these debates and cause unnecessary disturbances. The sad part is that these kind of films attract the most number of viewers, which ultimately leads to filmmakers making more films of this kind.

On 1st June 2018, two films were released. One was the probable 'woman centric' film called Veere Di Wedding, and the other called 'Bhavesh Joshi Superhero', dealing with issues like corruption , and how our society is shaping up these days. Now the way Veere Di Weeding portrayed their film in trailers and interviews, it seemed viewers were finally in for a film dealing with 'feminism', which was a need of the hour. Unfortunately, the term called 'feminism' is misused to extreme levels these days. Leave aside feminism, Veere Di Wedding portrays women in bad taste as well. Drinking and smoking is not called feminism. Partying all night and waking up in someone else's house in the morning is not called feminism. Refusing to work and doing nothing all day, and on top of that abusing your husband is not called feminism. Sure, all women are entitled to do these things and no one should stop them from doing so, but that doesn't mean one necessarily has to do all this to be a feminist and show women power. This is the part where the film completely goes wrong.

As expected , Veere Di Wedding opened to huge numbers in the box office, collecting around 10 crores in the first day itself. On the other hand , Bhavesh Joshi could only collect around 30 lakh. This shows that even though people say that the nature of viewers is changing in Bollywood, a film starring top actors but with no solid story can still rake in huge money. Actresses like Swara Bhaskar are the epitome of hypocrisy. She sharply criticized 'Padmavat', where women were shown with the highest honors, and she herself does things in this movie which contradicts her own statement. People are taking advantage of gender discrimination , and making films where women are shown doing all wrong things, which eventually leads to a whole generation being influenced in the wrong path. And people are still thronging theaters to watch a completely illogical film called 'Veere Di Wedding', and films like Parmanu and Bhavesh Joshi are going unnoticed in the society.

Scientists cannot say precisely where earth's atmosphere starts. The air gets thinner and thinner as we move up from the surface of the earth. Space doesn't have a strict restricted boundary, the atmosphere extends much farther than the internationally agreed upon line of space which is conventional boundary between atmosphere and outer space. There is no firm boundary where space begins. However, this line which forms the 'Boundary of space' is known as the 'Karman' Line which rests at 100 km above the surface of the earth and it's crossed by everything from sounding rockets to space planes.

According to the BIG BANG theory, 13.7 billion years ago explosion in lunas(a highly compressed atomic size body) had taken place due to pressure inside it. After the explosion, dust particles along with hydrogen accumulated due to gravity, galaxies are formed. After this, formation of star begun due to fusion of hydrogen and helium. After 300 million years due to stars formation, some of the stars exploded due to extreme pressure. This is called 'Supernovae' which was the reason of formation of elements like carbon, iron and all other except hydrogen and helium. 'Supernovae' also increased the distance between celestial bodies. Thus, making the space vast.

Earth is undoubtedly one of the celestial bodies which is composed of matter and has a mass, an atmosphere and little creatures running around and on it. Outer space is the void that exists between celestial bodies. It is an expanse of empty space in which nothing (or nearly nothing) exists.

Space is any extent in 3D with relative position and direction. Space is everywhere. That means the edge of space is less of a barrier and more of a moving target, changing as we achieve new milestones and achievements in spaceflight. Space begins where infinity begins. Since we don't know where infinity begins, the starting limit of space is beyond the scope of our knowledge.

There are some moments that makes us to think, this is a literal miracle... In aviation industry miracles are not so common when something bad happens. Most of the people are not lucky enough to survive some of the worst incidents that happens in this industry. One such near disaster was averted by Chesley Sullenberger, popularly known as Sully. Let's take a look on how this miracle man has done it...

txt
rich_1528136451364

It was on January 15 of 2009, Captain Sully and his First officer Jeff Skiles were piloting US Airways Flight 1594 heading to Charlotte from New York. Few minutes after a decent take off the plane underwent a bird strike as they lost thrust in both the engines. Initially situation seemed in control and the plane was advised to return to LaGuardia airpot, New York. But, Sully later realised that it's not possible to go for a landing in any of the nearby airports and they would definitely end up in Hudson river. Thanks to his experience of over 4 decades in flying, the Captain made right choices at right times and miraculously landed the plane safely on Hudson and the rescue followed. All the 155 passengers along with the crew were safe and Captain Sully was an instant hero. The news spread all over the world and he became a fame overnight. Later on, he was pulled aback by the results of the investigation on the incident. According to the investigation by NTSB , things could have gone better, if Sully would have taken right decision he would have actually made it to one of the airports. But, after the real time simulations and the taking the exact conditions in to consideration it was well proven that Sully made the perfect choice by getting the plane land on the Hudson. The movie SULLY depicted these incredible set of events. The so-called Obi-Wan of Space, Gennady Padalka is the one we would be talking about. He was a senior and a very experienced Russian Air force officer and probably that might be one of the reasons that made him one of the greatest commanders on ISS. In the year 1989, at the age of 31 he was selected as a Cosmonaut. From then on, he was part of five missions to space. His first one being the one to Mir (a typical Russian Space Station) and the later four were to ISS. It was his expertise that made him a real asset when it comes to commanding the expeditions to the ISS. He was considered as one of the best commanders the ISS ever had. He voluntarily took up the challenge of examining the effects of microgravity on humans when exposed to long durations in space. He served as a commander for Expeditions 9, 19 and 39 and was a flight engineer for his last Expedition 43. It was on June 28th, 2015, Padalka surpassed Sergei Krikalev's record of 803 total days in space during Expedition 43 of ISS and his 5th trip to space. On 8th of June, we celebrate World Oceans Day to remind everyone of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. They are the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe. The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world's oceans. They are a major source of food and medicines and a critical part of the biosphere. In the end, it is a day to celebrate together the beauty, the wealth and the promise of the ocean.

Plastic pollution is causing tremendous harm to our marine resources. 80% of all pollution in the ocean comes from people on land, 8 million tonnes of plastic per year ends up in the ocean, wreaking havoc on wildlife, fisheries and tourism, plastic pollution costs the lives of 1 million seabirds and 1,00,000 marine mammals per year, fishes eat the plastic, and we are having the same fish, plastic is causing $8 billion in damage to marine ecosystems each year.

So, we need to minimise the usage of plastic and prevent them from being deposited into the oceans. This is in our hands, and we have to put a step forward from banning plastic usage. Because, "Our Oceans-Our Future".

1528472945187
txt

Going through the interesting facts about India, one of the facts that grabbed my attention is the India’s first floating post office. The Dal Lake in Srinagar introduced the India’s first floating post office in 2011. As we know for a fact that, India has the highest number of post offices in the world but the one thing that attracts the tourist in Srinagar Dal Lake is the floating post office which was inaugurated by the former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in August 2011. The post office turns out to be a boon for the state tourism and is a tribute to the Dal Lake. The post office has a huge collection of stamps which is kept as a museum, which showcases its history and other fascinating stuff about postal stamps. Moreover the shops also sell postal stamps with other things. It also allows calls, emails to the tourists to connect to their family and friends. Another interesting fact about the post office is that the letters posted in this post office are carried out with a special design with the picture of landscape of the lake and with other attractions from Srinagar.

The visitors to the post office are not allowed to go inside it by wearing shoes. The idea cane up during the British period and was originally named as the Nehru post office but was closed because of the militancy in 1990s but later it was renamed as the floating post office by then chief post master, John Samuel. During the 2014 flood it was broken but was rescued and later it was bought back from the higher ground when the water level receded.
