The Indian Army is the land-based branch and the largest component of the Indian Armed Forces . The President of India is the Supreme Commander of the Indian Army , and it is commanded by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) , who is a four-star general . Two officers have been conferred with the rank of field marshal , a five-star rank , which is a ceremonial position of great honour . The Indian Army originated from the armies of the East India Company , which eventually became the British Indian Army , and the armies of the princely states , which finally became the national army after independence . The units and regiments of the Indian Army have diverse histories and have participated in a number of battles and campaigns across the world , earning many battle and theatre honours before and after Independence . It was founded on 1 April 1895 . Its headquarters is in New Delhi , Motto is "Service Before Self " . The primary mission of the Indian Army is to ensure national security and national unity , defending the nation from external aggression and internal threats , and maintaining peace and security within its borders . It conducts humanitarian rescue operations during natural calamities and other disturbances , like Operation Surya Hope , and can also be requisitioned by the government to cope with internal threats . It is a major component of national power alongside the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force . The army has been involved in four wars with neighbouring Pakistan and one with China . Other major operations undertaken by the army include: Operation Vijay , Operation Meghdoot and Operation Cactus. Apart from conflicts, the army has conducted large peace time exercises like Operation Brasstacks and Exercise Shoorveer , and it has also been an active participant in numerous United Nations peacekeeping missions including those in: Cyprus, Lebanon , Congo , Angola , Cambodia , Vietnam , Namibia, El Salvador , Liberia , Mozambique , South Sudan and Somalia . The Indian Army has a regimental system, but is operationally and geographically divided into seven commands , with the basic field formation being a division . It is an all-volunteer force and comprises more than 80% of the country's active defence personnel. It is the 2nd largest standing army in the world, with 1,237,177 active troops and 960,000 reserve troops . The army has embarked on an infantry modernisation program known as Futuristic Infantry Soldier As a System (F-INSAS) , and is also upgrading and acquiring new assets for its armoured , artillery and aviation branches . Mission and doctrine : Initially , the army's main objective was to defend the nation's frontiers . However , over the years , the army has also taken up the responsibility of providing internal security , especially against insurgencies in Kashmir and the Northeast . The current combat doctrine of the Indian Army is based on effectively utilising holding formations and strike formation . In the case of an attack, the holding formations would contain the enemy and strike formations would counter-attack to neutralise enemy forces . In the case of an Indian attack , the holding formations would pin enemy forces down, whilst the strike formations attack at a point of Indian choosing . The Indian Army is large enough to devote several corps to the strike role. Currently , the army is also looking at enhancing its special forces capabilities. With the role of India increasing , and the requirement for protection of India's interests in far-off countries become important, the Indian Army and Indian Navy are jointly planning to set up a marine brigade .

Beads of moisture rolled down my cheeks, a heavy weight on my chest left me gasping for air. I tried to move but its soft hairs trickled my nose and ears. A new semester has just started and while most students usually take up an internship or something over the vacation after this semester is over, there are still many things one can do while the semester is going on. You can actually accomplish a lot in the beginning of the semester as the seriousness of the semester is yet to kick in.

Have a look at some of the things you can do ensure this semester is productive!

Strategise your projects:

With the mini and major projects that have to be submitted, it is important for students to plan and strategise how to do it. Do that now in the next few weeks instead of worrying about it when deadlines are around the corner. This way, you will have ample time to figure out all the logistics involved and also to do the necessary research to make sure your project is impactful. This is also the time to find the right kind of people to work with on your projects, you can also do this by writing your requirements on stuMagz.

Attend college events everywhere:

Fests are held in most colleges during this time so it is the right time to go out and network. Present some papers, gain knowledge required to present papers, build your communication skills and more in these. Certificates from these events will also add that extra mileage to your resume when you start applying for jobs or for higher studies. Besides, this is the easiest way that a student can travel, without worrying about permissions from parents and colleges. Keep a track on the events section on stuMagz to find interesting events.
Learn how to handle interviews:
Colleges will have campus recruitment drives so this is the best time to learn how to handle them and prepare yourself. Practice your communication and write regularly to learn writing skills. You can write stories on stuMagz for this. Read about cracking the technical and HR rounds. You will definitely get through any interview. Keep watching the opportunities section on stuMagz to keep track of upcoming job opportunities!
"}]

Youth holds this immense power to change a family, a country and the world for better; erase all the ongoing worldly chaos and make co-existence of all lives a peaceful and harmonious one. It is in the blood of the youth, the passion, dreams, ambitions and in a summary a ball of intense energy which needs direction. This energy is volatile and if not directed properly would be explosive. One such issue facing by today’s youth is substance abuse.
One of the most wrong perceptions is ‘getting high’ just for the sake of it. These things can never take us to the highest place of senses, but in fact throw us to the lowest level of our sanity. They completely erase the boundaries between reality and illusion. People do use them to become more creative, relive them off stress or anxiety or depression and make them partners during self-pity. It all starts with ‘trying for once’ and escalates to them becoming necessity without which everything seems meaningless.

Then why do we give them the power to control us in such a life-degrading manner? We underestimate the power of our mind to help heal us and find peace and solitude in substance use. Why don’t we consider taking responsibility of our lives and shaping them a getting high? Why not get high with serotonin by helping someone in need? Why drown ourselves in depths of self-pity using such numb-making, thought-disrupting, sane-losing substances for instant gratification?

Have you heard of Butterfly Effect? Well us, as in youth of this country preferring to degrade our lifestyles might seem as a personal issue but collectively, it has the capability to destroy the future of the nation and coming generations. Funny, right? A small thing can affect on such a large scale.

Substance use and alcohol consumption might feel rewarding and like a whole new magical world but they can paralyze a person’s processing capability and decrease life expectancy. Despite knowing all the negative consequences, it’s the compulsion which drives a person to consume it.

Yes, I know we do have peer pressure pulling us down into the hole of darkness slowly, because ‘it is dope’ and ‘it is so damn cool’ to get high. It is not the mistake of the teens or the youth but it is the constant and consistent brainwashing about ‘being cool’ and likeable through social media and lyrics of songs. We consider ourselves mature, self-decisive, independent thinkers and of course ‘Smart Millennials’. Why do we still fall into the trap of false glorification of fake life? The reality is we are naive, we just accept things without questioning their credibility just because a pop- singer, an influencer or an actor has approved them.

Is it fair to lose ourselves in search of five minutes of numb happiness? Is it fair to bully our bodies and murder them early?
Isn’t it time for us to wake up and start searching our true selves? Nurture our body, mind and soul and become a better person than yesterday? It is never late to get out of addictions or go to a rehab, we just have to understand the need of not indulging in substance abuse to ourselves.

So, next time when someone says you’re a party-pooper or a spoilsport just stand up for yourself and deny them the chance to mess up your lifestyle, even if it is your best friend.

In the past, drugs reminded us of terrorists, gangsters and criminals. Today it is heart-wrenching to see how it has made its way into the lives of youth.

I always thought youth have improved over a period of time with exposure to internet and social media. This news made me rethink about it. Less privileged get into drugs due to mental trauma and family issues. Now-a-days, well raised and educated youngsters have also become victims of drug abuse. I wanted to find out the reason. I looked it up on the internet and here is what I found:

1. Stress

2. Low self-esteem

3. Depression

4. Boredom

5. Peer pressure

6. Curiosity

7. Money issues

8. Poor home environment

Some of these issues can definitely be treated without taking drugs. Unfortunately, youth are still opting for it. This speaks a lot about less awareness, improper guidance and communication gap in our society. Youth should be well educated about these in schools. We should make them understand the consequences of drug abuse by giving them real life examples like how drugs caused death of 54 people in Mizoram in 2019. Every youngster should know that drugs can only worsen their situation over a period of time. Here are some ill-effects caused by the drug abuse -

1. A weakened immune system.

2. Risk of significant liver damage or liver failure.

3. Heart conditions ranging from abnormal heart rates to heart attacks and collapsed veins.

4. Lung disease.

5. Problems with memory, attention and decision making, which make daily living more difficult.

txt
rich_1578996482398

Recently, I read some articles on measures taken to prevent and reduce the drug abuse. Providing support and parent communication were proven to be effective. Drugs are dreadful. I believe it is important to diagnose the drug much before it effects our health. We need to have regular checkup in schools and colleges to avoid any kind of drug abuse. We should try to stop schools, bars and EDM (electronic dance music) nights from becoming the spots for circulation of drugs.

I am happy that these hidden acts have come to forefront and created awareness among people. Today, we have open conversations about them, many are working on solving these issues and a positive impact is seen in the society. Hopefully, drug abuse decreases in the course of time and we get to see a happy, healthy and drug-free future.
"}]

India is the land of festivals. Makar Sankranti is one of the important festivals of Hindu religion that they celebrate with great joy and happiness. The festival is celebrated every year of 14 or 15 January depending upon the solar cycle. People celebrate by taking an early morning holy dip in the river and offering prayers to sun because according to Hindu mythology sun is one of the many God.

The word Makar Sankranti derives from two words makar and Sankranti. Makar means Capricorn and Sankranti means the transition of the sun in the Capricorn (zodiac sign). In a addition, this occasion is a very sacred and auspicious occasion according to Hinduism and they celebrate it as a festival.

It is celebrated almost all over the country, specially in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, karnataka and Maharashtra. In Andhra Pradesh, the Makar sankranti is celebrated for three days. All houses are decorated. Guests and in-laws are invited and sweets are given out to all. People dress themselves up as characters from mythology. The first day, that is Bhogi Panduga, people burn all old article's. The second day, Pedda Panduga is the Sankranti day when the big festival is held. People are dressed in new clothes and pray to God. There are also feasts arranged for the guests. Cock fighting was a favourite game during the Makar Sankranti, but now it is banned. The third day, the Kanuma Panduga is the day for having meat after the excessive sweets.

For most parts of India, this period is a part of early stages of Rabi crop and agricultural cycle, where crops have been sown and the hard work in the fields is mostly over. The time thus signifies a period of socializing and families enjoying each other's company, taking care of the cattles, and celebrating around bonfires, in Maharashtra the festival is celebrated by flying kites.

I wish that you touch new heights just like the kites on Makar Sankranti.... Wishing you a successful year ahead.

Every one of us always ponders over the thought of doing something for society. But only a few get into the field and do service. Here is my journey in doing such service through an NGO called Street Cause Hyderabad, which is the highest student-run NGO in Hyderabad. Before that a quick bite about the organization.

A Life without a Cause is a Life without an Effect. This is perhaps the most inspiring thought that aptly defines the motive of Street Cause which strives to bring consistent changes in the lives of the people.

Street Cause is an NGO comprising of students intent on doing their bit for the betterment of society. Within a year from its inception in 2009, it has radically grown from being a local guild of adherents, with the objective of helping the underprivileged and the destitute in any and every way possible, to being an internationally renowned organization. Street Cause has completed over 7000 tasks in a span of 8 years. A few events have been conducted in collaboration with corporates such as Deloitte, Gold Drop Industries, Indian Red Cross Society and others. Street Cause also has collaborations with organizations from various countries like the United States, Ukraine, Ghana, Gambia, Liberia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

The Journey:

My primary reason to join Street Cause is to do something for the underprivileged, who are often forgotten by everyone. It is really hard to take out time outside the academics for an engineering student, but my passion for service drove me. And now I am very happy that the efforts of people like me are helping the underprivileged to have a better living.

I am the Divisional President of Street Cause KGRCET, which is a division of Street Cause from the students of my college. With the help of students, we did events around the college. All the funds required for the events are raised by the students.

I am very proud to be the one to start Street Cause KGRCET Division in my college.

The list of events:

1. Distribution of sports equipment - 18th Nov 2019 - MPHS Chevella.

H.Y.A - Hyderabad Youth Assembly
