[{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1516606837885","data":"The rapid urbanisation of India did not come without its problems. <\/p>A recent study suggests that an estimated number of 30 Indians move from rural areas of the country to a major city every minute, young men and women looking for economic opportunities, farmers who've lost fortunes saving what they have to find a life to live in our urban centers, in their quest to make a life for themselves, all our major cities became the city of their dreams. <\/p>Yet we have failed in making our cities livable, with insane traffic snarls, water problems, unaffordable homes, pollution numbers that regularly break the AQI Index meter and an acute lack of open spaces. <\/p>\"In fact, Hyderabad remains one of the last livable cities in India,\" says Dipika Prasad, \"and we have to work to keep it that way.\" <\/p>Dipika Prasad is the co-founder of Lakeer, a civic and social enterprise that mobilises citizens to make their neighbourhoods more livable. Dipika was also invited to Davos, Switzerland to speak at the World Economic Forum on her initiative and how she can take it to the world. We caught up with her for a brief chat about Lakeer and her upcoming talk at the WEF this week. <\/p>\"It is incredibly easy to say these problems won't really affect us in our lifetimes and ignore them, but these problems are already affecting people in various places around the globe,\" says Dipika, speaking on urban issues like a severe lack of water and basic livability, \"In the coming three decades, we are going to see drastic changes in our urban areas, what with the number of people migrating to the cities in search of economic opportunities, it is time we think about how to make our cities more liveable now before it is too late.\"    <\/p>"},{"type":"img","id":"img-uid-1516611718568","data":"5a65ae7ad8055"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1516611720689","data":"\"It starts with small actions,\" she went on to explain, speaking on Lakeer's operations, \"to solve problems of such hyper-local nature, we'll need people within the area to report issues and make sure the problems are solved.\" <\/p>She goes on to talk about appointing local representatives for the organisation that'll help point out the issues that need to be addressed at the earliest. <\/p>Speaking quite passionately on the issue, Dipika continued to talk about the need to build livable cities for ourselves and those who will come after us, \"To offset the current number of people that migrate to cities to look for opportunities and provide them livable conditions, India needs to be building cities the size of Chicago every day. It's either that or focusing on making our cities livable today.\"<\/p>We did ask Dipika about building new cities that would potentially cushion the fall of economic migration, to which she replied, \"The economic power will still be distributed in our major cities, not to mention the fact that it'll take years for new cities to become economic powerhouses of their own. We have this problem today, right now.\" <\/p>Dipika also spoke about how the problems Lakeer is trying to tackle has already come to pass in the South African city of Cape Town, which is rapidly running out of water. The Global Shapers Community is a youth-led organization with 7000 members in 150 countries who are working towards making a positive change in their communities. She is Curator of the Global Shapers Community in Hyderabad, and one of the four Indian global shapers selected to represent the voice of youth at the World Economic Forum in Davos. She was selected in recognition of 8 years of her work in using technology to solve social challenges in South Asia and East Africa. Prior to setting-up Lakeer, she leads Intellecap\u2019s Innovation Lab and award-winning virtual incubation platform StartupWave. Appreciating her selection, Telangana State Minister KT Rama Rao said, \u201cIt is heartening to see a young entrepreneur from our state being selected to address such a prestigious summit.\u201d<\/p>Dipika\u2019s focus at Davos will be to highlight the importance of making cities in the developing world, especially in India, more liveable for everyone. With some of the most powerful people in the world in attendance, including our Prime Minister Narendra Modi, facing the crowd and delivering a speech is no easy task. On being asked about it, Dipika laughs, \"I'm definitely nervous,\" she says, \"I have a speech prepared and everything and of course, I'm doing this for a cause and I must remember that when I'm on stage and give my best.\" <\/p>In conclusion, we asked Dipika what her advice to students and her peers would be, considering the fact that she was taking on an enormous amount of responsibility at a young age. She pondered the question for a few minutes before answers, \"Three things,\" she began, \"One, we have led extremely sheltered lives, built a bubble around ourselves. To truly understand this world, we must leave our bubbles and see it with our own eyes. Second, what you learn is not what is happening in the world. Keep learning, keep up with the technologies of the world, keep doing micro-degrees online.
