Shireen is not my real name, although I am from BITS Hyderabad, I adopted this pseudonym to keep my identity a secret for no apparent reason except for the fact that I simply didn't want to be identified, I like keeping my privacy. <\/p>Speaking of privacy, we've had excellent articles on this very platform highlighting the need for it especially for us students, and why we must fight for it. However, for introverts such as yours truly, there are certain times in the year where your privacy goes for a toss no matter how much you want to keep it: festivals. <\/p>"},{"type":"img","id":"img-uid-1503345282406","data":"599b428344c15"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1503345283996","data":"Personally, I do not mind. Because this is the only time in the year I acknowledge the existence of relatives. As much as I hate their prying eyes and questions, especially the ones which ask me when I'm getting married, I do have cousins who are super cool and around whom I can be myself again. This is the only reason I subject myself to the torture of the public eye, so I can hang out with the cousins that I choose to like. <\/p>That being said, it is quite amazing how festivals in India bring together our families like no other time. Of course, the west has their Thanksgivings and Christmas parties, but nothing brings a family together like Indian festivals do. With all the privacy invading questions aside, it is absolutely great to catch up with your cousins over delicious sweets that you will regret eating later, but eat anyway because which sane person says no to ladoos and Kaju Barfi? <\/p>With Ganesh Chaturthi coming up in a couple of days, it is important to remember that this is what makes India what it is, our close knit communities have problems of their own, but when we come together for something positive, it is a beautiful sight to see. <\/p>"},{"type":"img","id":"img-uid-1503346260559","data":"599b42c716372"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1503346263478","data":"Diwali, another festival that most of us love, has long since lost it's appeal for me because of all the pollution it causes, but I still enjoy hanging out with my cousins and discussing various issues, the hottest on the day being all the pollution caused. While our parents do not understand our position on the festival, all us cousins have decided to not be a part of festivities, choosing instead to work on social issues. We've taken it upon ourselves to clean the streets next morning of all the paper and collect it for the hardworking municipal workers who come to usually sweep and pick it up, and we make it a point to give them sweets for all their hardwork. <\/p>Eid holds a special place in my heart because it teaches tolerance to people around me. In all the years that I've lived, I've never known a person to dislike Muslims after they had a taste of our delicious Sheer Kurma, but I'll talk about Eid on a later date. <\/p>If anything, festivals are a representative of what we can achieve if we come together as people who love and respect one another. We must treat our fellow citizens as an extended family and spread the love as much as we can, only then can this once great country become great once again. <\/p>"}]
