Being a woman in rural Haryana is a tough break, age old gender norms are enforced in almost all of India's rural areas and often, in urban areas too. The state is famous for producing tough as nails wrestlers who have time and again represented us internationally. Mahavir Singh Phogat, who grew up in rural Haryana, was no different, accepting the set gender norms of his society, he never really thought women could go on to become wrestlers, but the difference between him and the rest of the society is that he learned, Mahavir Singh Phogat proved that change is the only constant in life, and changed his views.

With Dangal releasing today, let's take a look at the incredible real story that inspired the movie, and perhaps learn from it.

Geeta and Babita Singh Phogat's training began when Mahavir Singh watched in, we speculate, awe and amazement as Karnam Malleshwari went on to become the first Indian woman to clinch a bronze medal in Weightlifting at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Mahavir Singh, who had until then been disappointed that he had fathered four girls, shifted gears into thinking that if Malleshwari could do win a medal, so could his daughters. Until this incident, Mahavir Singh often lamented the fact that he didn't have a son, as he wanted his son to win a gold medal for India in wrestling.

Not long after the Olympics, he build a wrestling ring for his daughters to practice in, and due to the age of his two youngest daughters, he chose the eldest two, Geeta Singh and Babita Singh and put them to the task, training them and making them fight their cousins, the daughters of his brother.

Any child will resent things imposed by their parents against their judgement, Geeta and Babita were no different, they tried their hardest to get out of training but their father listened to none of it, making them train, follow strict timetables and maintain a strict diet for them. What the sisters did not realize that their training sessions were causing a storm in the state, a state infamous for its high female foeticide rates, with Geeta having been born in the late 80s when girls were seen as a liability more than a blessing. Mahavir Singh faced intense ridicule for his choice of training his daughters and their cousins, verbally abused and even threatened, but his daughters kept him going, and he maintained that his daughters were no lesser than sons.

Geeta and Babita faced sexism from their peers, even relatives, often being called manly and unwomanlike, with constant jeers calling for their failure, and yet the girls kept their nerves, in the face of overwhelming opposition, and when they ran out of girls to wrestle, they started wrestling boys, which led to many boys refusing to wrestle them as they feared losing to a girl.

Their adventures led to improvement in the gender ratio of Haryana, a state that was severely affected by the gender gap disparity, with families viewing the girl child more favorably than before, and in 2010, Geeta Singh Phogat gave them a reason to remember why the girl child was just as important as the boy.

Overcoming adversity is not a small feat, but overcoming age old gender norms, sexism and patriarchy is a feat of its own, something which cannot be just experienced in words. If there is a lesson in this story, it's that together, with the support of your loved ones, you can achieve greatness against all odds, go against the grain and do the impossible. Having someone to believe in you can often seem a luxury, but if you persevere, supporters will come, so go ahead and chase your dreams.
"}]

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." is a famous line from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and is referenced so much that it is perhaps the most popular cliche, universally. A couple of days ago, Kareena Kapoor gave birth to a baby boy and named him Taimur, after the 14th century conqueror Taimur. Since then, she and her husband, Saif Ali Khan; are being trolled and bashed extensively on Twitter, with tweets like:

What's in a name? Really... Hitler, Stalin, Alexander, Akbar, Krishna Deva Raya, Shivaji, Chandragupta Maurya, everyone started/took part in or involved themselves in wars in some way or the other. The cause differed in each case but all these were conquerors in their own way. Hitler wanted world domination, so did Alexander. Stalin had his fair share of brutality.

There are many people of different religions in our country who proudly name their child after Alexander (Sikandar is the Indianised name for Alexander). So is Kareena Kapoor's son's name itself that is making everyone freak out or is there some other aspect?

As per this logic, people shouldn't name their child a lot of things, like Mukesh (prime accused in the Nirbhaya rape case), Rajendra (the underworld gangster Chhota Rajan), Dawood (I need not explain this) and more.

Nevertheless, they're just a couple who decided to name their child something. While I am not standing by them or supporting their choice of name, I am just saying the choice is theirs to make.

As an Indian, as someone who's read the constitution and studied the preamble of our constitution in school, I believe some freedoms should not be taken away from anyone. I close by quoting the preamble.

"WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN, SOCIALIST, SECULAR ,DEMOCRATIC, REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:

JUSTICE, social, economic and political;

LIBERTY of thought , expression, belief, faith and worship;

Srinivasa Ramanujan Iyengar is an inspiration to students from all walks of life, because he rose from nothing to become one of the greatest mathematical minds in the field, contributing heavily to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. Even with no formal training in pure mathematics, Ramanujan's story is of passion and perseverance to achieve one's goals. On his birthday, today, December 22nd, we celebrate National Mathematics Day. Let us take a look at the life of this enigmatic man who fought tooth and nail for his love of mathematics.

1. He had humble beginnings

Srinivasa was born in Erode, situated in Tamil Nadu, to a Clerk/cloth merchant father and a mother who used to sing at the local temple, and was mostly a homemaker. The house his family moved to in Kumbakonam after his birth is now a monument, called the Srinivasa Ramanujan International Monument.

2. He loved mathematics so much, he failed every other subject

When Ramanujan was in school, he became obsessed with mathematics, solving complex problems with relative ease right from the age of 11, but it wasn't until he was 16 years old, when his friend gifted him a copy of A Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure and Applied Mathematics by G. S. Carr, that his true genius was awakened. Or so say the historians that have studied his life. Ramanujan even ran away from home for his quest of mathematics, enrolling in a different college to pursue his interest and performed poorly in the other subjects, making next to no money and often being on the brink of starvation. His life changed when he met the founder of the Indian Mathematical Society, V. Ramaswamy Aiyer, who recognized his genius which then further led to him being identified and included as a researcher in the University of Madras.

3. Ramanujan's work was rejected initially

It is now speculated that the two professors Ramanujan contacted first thought of him as a fraud, since his work was something advanced that they could not believe came from a man who had no formal training in mathematics, this is why they rejected his work without comment and sent the letters back, until the third mathematician, G. H. Hardy, received Ramanujan's work and was so intrigued, he sent for him, asking Ramanujan to come to England at the earliest, and thus Ramanujan would begin the journey that would cement his name in the annals of history. 4. Ramanujan was a deeply religious man, and credited his findings to the family goddess Mahalaskhmi

Ramanujan once said, “An equation for me has no meaning, unless it represents a thought of God.” He was a deeply religious man who also remarked that he saw all religions as equal in conversations with G. 5. He died at the age of 32, leaving behind a legacy for mathematicians to decode as the years passed.

Ramanujan was plagued with health issues his entire life, after being confined to hospitals and sanatoriums, Ramanujan returned to India in 1919, and died the year after than on the 26th of April, 1920. After his passing, his brother collected all his notes and preserved them, and slowly but surly his genius was recognized by the world in the coming years. Today, India is incredibly proud of his contributions to mathematics, his childhood home has been turned into a monument and his life story was told in a Hollywood movie named The Man Who Knew Infinity. Admit it, we have all stood in those never-ending queues at the banks or at the ATMs to get hold of the new currency. The rich and the poor alike had to jostle through the crowd to be a part of the positive step taken in favor of a better India. But the crowds at ATMs haven't diminished in number.

Giving it a thought has led to amazing things being unearthed- A digital revolution is taking place all thanks to the demonetization. App based transactions are in, while cash based ones have become passé. Download an app and continue your everyday transactions! How simple is that?

You just need a smart phone to house a wide range of apps. But what about the instances when you actually need hard cash?? Well, some of the students we know have found ways through apps to get that too!

Like Arjun, who has figured out a life hack through a bakery near his place that gives hard cash and accepts online transfer via apps (exclusive for regulars).

Another life hack that sounded too good to be true was that a few of our beloved drivers from the cab companies that we rely on every day for our commuting agree to exchange cash with a certain amount via online transfer.

Shopping malls too have chipped in to help those in need. Since they have a large inflow of cash each day, they let the shoppers swipe away in glee in exchange of cash. So, the next time you judge people rushing to the malls even at this cash strapped time, who knows, they might be just rushing to get some hard cash.

The news might be all doom and gloom these days but there is still humans who shine brighter than the brightest star in the night sky, here on earth. Today, December 20th, is International Human Solidarity Day, a day where we celebrate the humans who put their own self interest, safety and time aside for their fellow beings. As the hero Samwise Gamgee said to the Ring Bearer Frodo Baggins at the foot of Mount Doom, "There’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for."

1. A Chennai based man saves a woman from sexual abuse

Vasanth Paul, a Chennai based photographer and model, posted on facebook about his experience late one night when he had stopped his bike on the side of the road to take a break. Paul reported to have heard weak screams for help and jumped immediately to help, and got attacked by 3 men, one of whom used a rope to try and strangle him, creating enough time for the woman to run and grab an auto driver's attention. The driver joined Paul in fighting off the abusers and both Paul and the woman got away without many injuries. Paul ended his facebook post asking his readers to look after one and other, because if you're doing something right, the world will join you.

5. The Hyderabadi cop who helps people who run out of petrol

Let's be honest, cops don't exactly have a good reputation in India, but one traffic cop, Merajuddin Syed, quickly became a local hero as motorists who run out of petrol usually find him close by to help them refill. Syed usually stocks bottles of petrol, sometimes just enough to reach the nearest petrol bunk, and sometimes enough to reach home. He carries at least 6 bottles of petrol in his scooty and always refuses to take money for his help, even when he is insisted. Truly a local hero.
