‘Apan Hyderabadi’

These words are enough to invoke that inexplicably amazing feeling in all of us. Just like Bengaluru has this quintessential term – ‘namma ooru Bengaluru’, we Hyderabadis also stand true to our identity.

Hyderabad has always been about – live, laugh, love. the ambience adds meaning and a new dimension to life. The chaos will put up a smile and their memories will lead to laughter.

The tehzeeb of Hyderabadis will make us fall in love with the place. It is not just a place, it is an identity. An identity so affirmative that no matter which part of the world we migrate to, our Hyderabadi attitude doesn’t die. That care free, chalta hai attitude is so typical of us Hyderabadis, that it has become a style statement of sorts. The beauty of this city resides in its rich language that is so proudly regarded as Hyderabadi hindi. Coming from a place that spoke shuddh hindi with words like ‘haan ji’, I easily graduated to ‘hau’. From nahi to ‘nakko’, my personality too took a diabolical turn (not that I regret it).

Hyderabadis are so good at geography that any route and any destination can be reached by ‘seedha chale jao’. Any worry, any issue crops up- ‘bahar dekhlenge miya’. Our cuisine is one of its kind which requires no special mention. So much so, even Sallu bhai orders our special haleem. Our typical, carefree Hyderabadi attitude has led to the coining of a term-late lateef. Bollywood has embraced our Hyderabadi hindi in movies like Dawat E Ishq. Our landmarks are world famous and need no special mention as such. My experience with this city has made me non accommodating to other cities. The air itself seems so different in other cities that I find it difficult to adjust there and look forward to my return.

I realised the truth of it when I spent the last one year away from Hyderabad, the city I was born and raised in. I spent a year away from the city and in this one year, I realised how much I miss it, how much the city is a part of my life and how much of the city's soul is in me.
The city has played different roles in my life, from a teacher to a friend to a bully. My first brushes with driving through almost the entire city involved a route through Himayatnagar, Tank Bund, culminating at Begumpet where my mom used to take me to Walden to refill my book case every summer. It was almost like going to a different country for me, coming from one of the (the then) corners of the city to the place with the swankiest shops, buildings and people. I used to gaze awestruck at the Buddha statue and the clean(er) waters of Hussain Sagar.
After I grew up, started exploring more of the city, the city's soul started getting into me. The laid-back happy-go-lucky and yet, ready to be aggressive faster than you can say hi attitude of the old city; the tech and startup buzz of Hitech city; the cultural buzz at places like Lamakaan, Our Sacred Space and a lot more became a part of my soul.
People from my previous generation say the Irani cafes that dot the city were places for endless chai and cigarette fuelled conversations back in their day and even now, I believe that hasn't changed; only the ambience of such conversations changed. The conversations I've had with a variety of people across the city, at several cafes, are some of my most memorable moments in the city.
As to the cultural and other aspects, I can affirmatively say that significant number of my evenings from 2012 to 2015 were spent watching some theatre performance at Lamakaan, enthralled by the portrayals. Significant number of my mornings in the same time period were spent in adrenalin fuelled hikes and climbing sessions among the sentinel rock formations at Moula Ali and other million year old rock formations across the city; which is spread over the magnificent Deccan plateau.
Now that I came back to the city that I love, I am sure there is nothing that can part me from this city; my city, my home.

txt
rich_1482470530342
Street Cause was founded in 2009 and since then has spread to over 30 colleges, it's an organization that provides a platform for youngsters who are intent on doing their bit towards the betterment of society. Since then, she and her husband, Saif Ali Khan; are being trolled and bashed extensively on Twitter, with tweets like:

And then there are people who mistake Taimur for Babur's son or some such, like the gentleman below who is referencing to god knows what:

What's in a name? Stalin had his fair share of brutality.
There are many people of different religions in our country who proudly name their child after Alexander (Sikandar is the Indianised name for Alexander). So is Kareena Kapoor's son's name itself that is making everyone freak out or is there some other aspect?
As per this logic, people shouldn't name their child a lot of things, like Mukesh (prime accused in the Nirbhaya rape case), Rajendra (the underworld gangster Chhota Rajan), Dawood (I need not explain this) and more.
Nevertheless, they're just a couple who decided to name their child something. S. Carr, that his true genius was awakened. Or so say the historians that have studied his life. Ramanujan even ran away from home for his quest of mathematics, enrolling in a different college to pursue his interest and performed poorly in the other subjects, making next to no money and often being on the brink of starvation. They say you realise the value of something when you lose it.

"}]

Street Cause was founded in 2009 and since then has spread to over 30 colleges, it's an organization that provides a platform for youngsters who are intent on doing their bit towards the betterment of society. One such chapter, Street Cause GNITS, of G. Narayanamma Institute of Technology and Science, recently took up building a roof for an old age home.

Nikhita Kottam, part of the Chief Executive Board of Street Cause GNITS, spoke to stuMagz about the project, speaking about the fundraising and how they zero'd in on the Trinity Service Society, the old age home in question.

"We raised the funds required for the construction back in the first week of September. We had actually raised funds through the fund-raiser Eco-Danta, as a backup for such tasks and when this old age home contacted us in November, the funds were utilised," Nikhita says.

When the students first visited the old age home, they were met with a leaky, almost non-existent roof, with beds exposed to the elements such as rain, and also being a hazard to the people living there. With quick mobilization, Street Cause GNITS covered up the home with galvanized sheets, with the project ending recently this week.

Being a woman in rural Haryana is a tough break, age old gender norms are enforced in almost all of India's rural areas and often, in urban areas too. The state is famous for producing tough as nails wrestlers who have time and again represented us internationally. Mahavir Singh Phogat, who grew up in rural Haryana, was no different, accepting the set gender norms of his society, he never really thought women could go on to become wrestlers, but the difference between him and the rest of the society is that he learned, Mahavir Singh Phogat proved that change is the only constant in life, and changed his views.

Geeta and Babita Singh Phogat's training began when Mahavir Singh watched in, we speculate, awe and amazement as Karnam Malleshwari went on to become the first Indian woman to clinch a bronze medal in Weightlifting at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Overcoming adversity is not a small feat, but overcoming age old gender norms, sexism and patriarchy is a feat of its own, something which cannot be just experienced in words. If there is a lesson in this story, it's that together, with the support of your loved ones, you can achieve greatness against all odds, go against the grain and do the impossible. Having someone to believe in you can often seem a luxury, but if you persevere, supporters will come, so go ahead and chase your dreams.
"}]

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." is a famous line from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and is referenced so much that it is perhaps the most popular cliche, universally. A couple of days ago, Kareena Kapoor gave birth to a baby boy and named him Taimur, after the 14th century conqueror Taimur. Since then, she and her husband, Saif Ali Khan; are being trolled and bashed extensively on Twitter, with tweets like:

What's in a name? Really... Hitler, Stalin, Alexander, Akbar, Krishna Deva Raya, Shivaji, Chandragupta Maurya, everyone started/took part in or involved themselves in wars in some way or the other. The cause differed in each case but all these were conquerors in their own way. Hitler wanted world domination, so did Alexander.

While I am not standing by them or supporting their choice of name, I am just saying the choice is theirs to make.

As an Indian, as someone who's read the constitution and studied the preamble of our constitution in school, I believe some freedoms should not be taken away from anyone. I close by quoting the preamble.

"WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN, SOCIALIST, SECULAR ,DEMOCRATIC, REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:

JUSTICE, social, economic and political;

LIBERTY of thought , expression, belief, faith and worship;

EQUALITY of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all;

FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation;

Srinivasa Ramanujan Iyengar is an inspiration to students from all walks of life, because he rose from nothing to become one of the greatest mathematical minds in the field, contributing heavily to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. Even with no formal training in pure mathematics, Ramanujan's story is of passion and perseverance to achieve one's goals. On his birthday, today, December 22nd, we celebrate National Mathematics Day. Let us take a look at the life of this enigmatic man who fought tooth and nail for his love of mathematics.

1. He had humble beginnings

Srinivasa was born in Erode, situated in Tamil Nadu, to a Clerk/cloth merchant father and a mother who used to sing at the local temple, and was mostly a homemaker. The house his family moved to in Kumbakonam after his birth is now a monument, called the Srinivasa Ramanujan International Monument.

2. He loved mathematics so much, he failed every other subject

When Ramanujan was in school, he became obsessed with mathematics, solving complex problems with relative ease right from the age of 11, but it wasn't until he was 16 years old, when his friend gifted him a copy of A Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure and Applied Mathematics by G. S. Carr, that his true genius was awakened. Or so say the historians that have studied his life. Ramanujan even ran away from home for his quest of mathematics, enrolling in a different college to pursue his interest and performed poorly in the other subjects, making next to no money and often being on the brink of starvation. His life changed when he met the founder of the Indian Mathematical Society, V. Ramaswamy Aiyer, who recognized his genius which then further led to him being identified and included as a researcher in the University of Madras.

3. Ramanujan's work was rejected initially

It is now speculated that the two professors Ramanujan contacted first thought of him as a fraud, since his work was something advanced that they could not believe came from a man who had no formal training in mathematics, this is why they rejected his work without comment and sent the letters back, until the third mathematician, G. H. Hardy, received Ramanujan's work and was so intrigued, he sent for him, asking Ramanujan to come to England at the earliest, and thus Ramanujan would begin the journey that would cement his name in the annals of history. He reached England in the year 1914.

4. Ramanujan was a deeply religious man, and credited his findings to the family goddess Mahalaskhmi

Ramanujan once said, “An equation for me has no meaning, unless it represents a thought of God.” He was a deeply religious man who also remarked that he saw all religions as equal in conversations with G. 5. He died at the age of 32, leaving behind a legacy for mathematicians to decode as the years passed.

Ramanujan was plagued with health issues his entire life, after being confined to hospitals and sanatoriums, Ramanujan returned to India in 1919, and died the year after than on the 26th of April, 1920. After his passing, his brother collected all his notes and preserved them, and slowly but surly his genius was recognized by the world in the coming years. Today, India is incredibly proud of his contributions to mathematics, his childhood home has been turned into a monument and his life story was told in a Hollywood movie named The Man Who Knew Infinity.
