Out of them was Kepler spacecraft. But due to the limited survey of Kepler spacecraft, scientists had to build something huge. Their intensive research has led to the vision of TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite ). <\/b>Wondering what an exoplanet is? An exoplanet or an extrasolar planet is a planet outside our solar system that orbits around a star. In a two-year survey of the solar neighbourhood, TESS will study more than 20.000 stars.  <\/b><\/p>"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1506260874480","data":" WORKING PRINCIPLE:<\/b><\/i><\/p>It is equipped with 4 wide angle telescopes and associated CHARGE COUPLED DEVICE (CCD) DETECTORS. Drop in the brightness of the star due to planet transits is used to detect planets. And based on the decrease in light intensity, the size, mass and density of the planet's atmosphere is determined. The survey is divided into northern hemisphere (13 sectors), southern hemisphere(13 sectors). The survey is broken into 26 observation sectors, 13 sectors each year. The spacecraft will spend 13.7 days observing each sector. With every movement of cameras, TESS covers over 2000 degrees coverage. It's coverage is 400 times larger than Kepler. For bright stars, the TESS will capture images every minute, because more light can be captured as the star is bright. For dimmer M-STARS the TESS will capture every 30 minutes for enough light for a clear image. TESS has the power to detect planets from Earth-sized to gas giants making it one of the most modernised space missions.<\/p>"},{"type":"img","id":"img-uid-1506260928234","data":"59c7b82f15898"},{"type":"txt","id":"rich_1506260940553","data":"Every 13.7 days, TESS orients to send data back to the earth via its 3 DSN stations by pointing the Ka-band high gain antenna towards the eath.After the downlink is complete, TESS is reoriented to science mode.TESS will instruct THE JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE (JWST), on which planets to look into. JWST is 100 times more powerful than the existing Hubble telescope.
