I've always loved self-depreciating humour. Not only does it serve as an excellent cover for one's insecurities, it also is a fantastic way of laughing at yourself and learning to take things in your stride, so that you may pick yourself up and try again. Like, if by some miracle I manage to do something great with my life and have to pen an autobiography, that is how I'd want mine to be, self-depreciating, humorous and more importantly, not a guidebook for some MBA student to read my life story and go, 'Ah yes, this makes perfect sense, this is exactly what I'll do', while completely ignoring the fact that the only reason I would hypothetically highlight something and make fun of it is to say 'Don't do this, you dolts!'

Now that we've gone off on this tangent, the reason we're here is that Eric Newby has inspired me. It isn't every day that you come across a book you like so much that you decide to learn how to write like how the author writes, yet as you flip through the pages of A Short Walk In The Hindu Kush, you cannot help but laugh at how the story is told.

A Short Walk In The Hindu Kush is considered one of the best books about mountaineering ever written. The twist in the story is that Newby was a newbie when he wrote this book. He had never climbed a mountain before in his life, picked a completely random mountain in Afghanistan to climb and then went on to write a hilarious account of his journey that soon became legend. I only discovered this book due to my recent obsession with mountains, looking up accounts of mountain ascents to read.

Published in 1956, the book baffled critics and seasoned mountaineers alike because of how hilarious it was and went on to baffle younger mountaineers a generation and generations later because it wasn't easy to comprehend that a man with no experience of climbing wrote such a hilariously accurate account of what goes down when you're looking up at the peak. But I think I have an answer to this and I'm quite sure that there are plenty of others who arrive at similar conclusions once they finish reading the book.

It's because Newby is, to put it mildly, extremely relatable. Climbing a mountain is something a vast majority of us will never do in our entire lives but along comes a guy from England, all posh and stuff, saying he will conquer an obscure peak in Afghanistan for no reason except for the fact that it hadn't been done yet. He observes the climbing process like how a normal person would and hilarity ensues.

A Short Walk In The Hindu Kush is one part buddy comedy, with Newby and his Diplomat friend Hugh Carless - who, despite his name, was a very meticulous person - attempting to take on the Mir Samir, the then unconquered peak in the ranges of the Hindu Kush. It is one part thriller, with Newby and Carless's thrills to get to the mountain in the first place but at the end of the day, it is an all-around adventure novel that will leave you roaring for more.

As for whether the pair made their climb or not, I'd much rather you read it and found out, trust me when I say this, it is definitely one of the best books you'll ever read. Click here to buy!
"}]

The Great Entrepreneurship Stories a.k.a the Real GES as the organizers like to call it, happened on the last day of November at the Mustang Lounge Bar starting 7:30 PM. It was a meetup where like-minded people could come up and share their stories, rather experiences that they went through to evolve as an entrepreneur.
Greeted with a wide smile as I walk through the stairs, my registration was verified, and I walked in to meet a rather wide spectrum of audience. It was my first event in this genre and I didn’t really know what to expect from the event. To my content, I found people from all walks of life covering a very wide spectrum. The event started off with the MakeSense networking session by Anna Moran, which is a great initiative working towards many goals and is trying to make their presence be felt in Hyderabad. Anna Moran talked a little about the MakeSense campaigns that they are conducting and invited us to be a part of the noble venture if it interests us.

txt
rich_1512141605262

Since this event had a lot of interesting talks and it is difficult to list our each of them, let me take the liberty to list out a few that really got me in, I’ll start with Sid, the “Doodh Wala”. Well, that’s exactly how he started and that drew our attention as we all were awestruck by how a Doodh Wala came up to talk about his entrepreneurship story on the dais! He talked about a small incident which was an interaction with whom he taught was his customer. He talked about how you realize an entirely new perspective when you are on the receiving end of life, he explained how he evolved as a more considerate person and is more forgiving after being an entrepreneur and handling the customer grievances himself. Sid runs a successful farm called Sid’s Farm that delivers healthy milk to about 6000 doorsteps each day!

Then came Sanjeev Reddy, the CTO & Co-founder of ThinkProxi which is an IoT based start-up looking at localizing the best services and offers for global users. ThinkProxi helps local restaurants and other destinations attract new customers and also offer better value for existing customers by implementing his “Beacons” which transmit and communicate with the visitors of the restraint to give them offers and deals to mention a few. Neha, who recently fulfilled her dream of staying un-married till 30 and recently found her partner in a young, broad-minded man who chose to break the gender stereotype and agreed to relocate to Hyderabad to make her dreams realized. Neha talks about the struggles of a Woman entrepreneur as she evolves herself into an entrepreneur which causes more hindrance to her personal life than it should. Coming to Raj N Janagam, he was one of the most cheerful people in the entire crowd and had something to share that people would bother listening. Raj N Janagam tried to solve the issue that he had faced as a student while traveling from the station to his college during his early days In Mumbai. He solved this issue by starting his own service where the need was and put up several cycles at the Station and at his college that the student could make use of to reduce the commute struggle. However, as the service grew, and the Government realized the potential of such service, they wanted a share of it and had to intervene. Understanding that it was the right way to go, Raj went ahead with the formalities and won the bid for the contract only to encounter yet another hurdle. He was being drawn into something that he hated the most, corruption! Back during the days of Anna Hazare’s fight against corruption, Raj was demanded a sum of 35Lakh rupees, all in black only to get the permission to continue with his Social Entrepreneurship. Rajendra Prasad joined the Indian National Congress in 1911 and became a leader of the Bihar and Odisha region

As a child, Rajendra Prasad was taught by a Maulavi (Muslim scholar), as his father wanted him to learn the Persian language, Hindi and arithmetic

He used to stay at the Eden Hindu Hostel in Calcutta during his educational years at the University of Calcutta as a postgraduate student of Economics

Prasad played a major role in forming the Bihari Students Conference in the year 1906 at the hall of Patna College

He served as the president of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the first constitution of the Republic of India, which lasted from 1948 to 1950

He also became the first Minister of Food and Agriculture in 1946 in the interim national government

The British governance had jailed Prasad many times. He was arrested for his support in the Salt Satyagraha Movement of 1931 and the Quit India Movement of 1942

As the President of India, Prasad quit the Congress and set up new guidelines for the parliamentarians that are still followed

He was unanimously elected as the President of India at the last session of the Constituent Assembly of the interim government

In January 1934, Bihar was hit by a devastating earthquake. The British authorities had to free Prasad from jail so that he could lead the relief services in the state. A year later, when another earthquake hit Quetta (now in Pakistan), Prasad was again selected as the President of the Quetta Earthquake Relief Committee.

From one of the real life stories I have gone through,A girl named Jenny found love in her best friend during her schooling without her notice. They used to talk to

each other for a long time. Both used to have a strange feeling which is beyond friendship. As that feeling was giving pleasure to them, they did not tried to figure it out what name should

be given to that feeling.

As their schooling was about to complete and they don't have any idea where their graduation is going to take place. As jenny was very much worried about this,he

used to say that,'we owe a lot to each other,so we will be back together soon'.These lines gave her a hope.

Jenny used to feel very comfortable with him.His caring, pampering made her to have a strong belief on him.Innocent jenny used to pray a lot to be placed in the

same college as his.Luckily or Unluckily,She found him in the same college of her graduation. At that moment,Her happiness hit the sky.

As days passed, they became closer to each other than before. The unnoticed feeling at her schooling was noticed now. They both were happy being in a relationship. His

attention towards her and his advice to her in every matter impressed her.He used to present her gifts which she was awaiting to buy .She believed that choosing him is the right decision

in her life though all other decisions might go wrong.

He used to prove his love towards her in every situation. He used to allow her to live herself, except in some cases if she is wrong. He first make her laugh when she

cries and later used to find out the reason behind her tears. For example,If in any matter her parents shout at her she calls him and shows all her anger in the form of tears which he never likes and make her understand the inner voice of her parents.

Jenny shares every single matter with him and he listens to her with lot of patience.Though he doesn't share everything with her but the most important things in his life were shared with her first and then to others. This importance given by him to Jenny made her like him from the depth of the heart.

As time passes,do you think Jenny remained the happiest and luckiest girl ever?

Are you interested to know what had happened to her in the coming days?

If yes,then

Stay tuned till I come back with my next article on Jenny.
"}]
There are certain words that become a part of our growing up process, indispensable and routine. A students’ repertoire is dotted with words unleashed during student life. Some words may have the potential of staggering and knocking us down with great force so much so that we have to grapple with them and learn to inculcate them in our daily lives in order to stand back on our feet again. One such word that looms very large on our minds is Motivation. We use it liberally, either blaming it for all our failures or applauding it for all our successes. Have we really comprehended its significance in our lives, I wonder? When our coaches or mentors tell us we lack motivation, we dart to every corner within eyesight/reach, in its pursuit which may on occasions seem endless and unfruitful. Our search result then either makes us come back satiated and smiling at having found it or grumpy and disheartened at having failed.

txt
rich_1512023206717
What are we attempting to seek? Is it a person, place or thing? Is it something elusive or within our grasp? When we attach motivation to a person we tend to emulate him or her and imbibe his or her way of life to achieve what we want in life ….sounds rather warped doesn’t it? Why should we follow what someone else has done to get what we want in life? If it’s a place then how does that physical location motivate us when we are based in another geographical location? Is it a thing? An inanimate thing? How can that add a meaning to our living animate lives? Hmm….. We live in dichotomies and does it make a radical difference if a few more creep in as we add this too to our daily existence?
Let’s revisit a happy positive word like Success - in our student life when we achieve it we are all smiles and are magnanimous and bestow appreciation and credit on our sources whether they belong to the living or inanimate kingdom and mouth the “If it hadn’t been for you or that …….”

It’s now time to internalize that motivation and seek it “within.” We fail when we try to seek it outside – either in others, in situations or in things which are beyond our control. If for a moment we understand and comprehend that the cause of any failure or success rests with us and more precisely within us we would already be on the path of motivation. When the desire to achieve things begins within us it must also be fanned within us and flourish to its conclusion there. If we do fail, it is largely due to our inability to keep ourselves motivated enough to reach our destination, given that sometimes there may be insurmountable hurdles/odds which are not within our control.

txt
rich_1512023210386

What then is the remedy to counter the malaise of demotivation a term which is becoming very rampant in student life and being grossly misused to account for an individual’s failure? Whereas on the contrary, its brighter sibling – motivation is being used to shower praise on something or someone who we felt motivated us to achieve our success. The answer and remedy lie in ownership. It’s time to take the word by its reins and started owning it. It belongs to us and to nobody/nothing else. Time to understand that the buck starts and stops with us. It’s time to realise that we were probably confusing inspiration with motivation. So what then is the next step? What should do we do now? It’s time to look within and draw on our inner resources - our very own independent well of motivation that lies as a throbbing pulsating entity, a living organism within us just waiting to be tapped.

txt
rich_1512023331722

Issac Asimov has to be one of my favourite Science Fiction writers of all time. The period he was active in was home to many of Sci-Fi's greatest writers, but Asimov is the one who had the most impact on me. As funny as it sounds, I didn't actually start reading Asimov until I watched Will Smith's I, Robot in theatres, which was an adaptation of his book.

Enthralled by the story and how it moved, enchanted by the three rules of robotics that Asimov lays down that, to this day, is still used by other Sci-Fi writers in their own works, I, Robot was my entry into the world of Sci-Fi outside of video games, the stories of which were inspired from the Sci-Fi greats themselves.

The Three Laws Of Robotics:

In the story, Asimov writes that every artificial intelligent robot must adhere to the three rules of robotics laid down by the creators (in this case, Humans). They are as follows.

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

As you can see, the three laws seem pretty air tight to quell any rebellion against humanity. But, are they really are?

I, Robot is one of those stories that make you sit back in shock and awe because of just how much the story blows your mind. It made me think just how can anyone be so good as to write a story this deep, this understanding of the nature of a human being and how survival instincts are put to the test when pushed to its limits. It asks us what the meaning of life is, what does it mean to be alive, it questions slavery, racism, trust and even friendship.

I, Robot changed the world, it changed how Sci-Fi was written, it influenced countless movies and even more video games. It is a cultural landmark, and everyone must read it.
"}]
