Among all the days observed, there's also a World Read Aloud Day and on that day in this year, over 30 students volunteering with the Youngistaan Foundation celebrated it in a unique way, with a new initiative. They spent the day with 800 underprivileged children in various locations in the city and had a one-of-a-kind interactive session where they read a book aloud for these children.

Sounds interesting? Well it is, as it involved a lot more than just reading out from a book, as Ruthvika, one of the volunteers, explains, "We wanted to do something that isn't just done in that day and instead, triggers something in these children. People aren't into reading usually and it is more so with children in government schools, owing to their socio-economic backgrounds and that is why we wanted to do this. We already have an initiative - Bright Spark, through which we undertake such events and as a part of that, we wanted to do an interactive learning/activity based learning event and that's how it happened."

To kickstart this, they first had extensive training sessions for all the volunteers for a few weeks before the event, as these volunteers should also know what and how to read. In these sessions, a Neha Mathur, a professional story-teller, trained the students on the right intonation, the right diction and more.

After gearing up with the training, the 30 students then gathered 50-80 school children at each location and they held the session that aimed at expanding the child's imagination and vocabulary in addition to inculcating a habit of reading among the students. "A primary goal of this was to make sure these kids learn how to communicate instead of rote learning. In our earlier sessions, when we wanted children to express something, we used to ask them to draw and use art as a medium as these children lack the skills to communicate effectively through speaking or writing. Through this event, we aimed at building effective communication skills in these children, which then will go a long way into their lives," shares Ruthvika, who is currently pursuing her Master's in Journalism.

Another interesting aspect is their choice of story that they read to the children. It's a children's book called Angry Akku, which talks about a little girl who is very angry. "We chose this book because this book introduces the aspect of solving a problem systematically. Being able to approach a problem in the right manner to solve it is crucial and we wanted to hit multiple birds with one shot. Through this event, these students not only understood the joys of reading but also got to know life skills and how they can develop them," says Ruthvika.

They now want to make it a regular event and also train the English teachers at government schools to ensure the language and the necessary communication skills are taught to students in the right manner.

There have been several initiatives taken up by students and we've written about them many times but this initiative intrigued me extensively when I came across this. A bunch of students, calling themselves 'Techies for Karshaks', have started an initiative called Campus Farming, wherein multiple teams of students farm a piece of land inside Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT), Basara, utilising what they learnt in their engineering to develop farming techniques to help farmers. Yes, you read that right, engineering students are farming to solve real world farming problems.

The idea first popped up in 2018, when Jagadishwar, Srikanth, Sandeep and Aditya decided to develop working models for farmers, as Jagadishwar explains, "We wanted to utilise our tech know-how to help farmers and as a pilot project, we got the idea in 2018 but we could not take it ahead back then because of time constraints. Techies for Karshaks was born then and finally in January 2020, we started this project kickstarted when college allotted us 1.5 acres of campus land for this purpose."

The 1.5 acre piece of land within RGUKT campus was divided into 9 parts with each of the 7 branches of engineering in the college receiving a part and the two Pre-University Course batches receiving a part each. The students themselves formed teams of about 30 people each and started planting spinach and coriander, as these two crops give the quickest yield.

An interesting aspect here is that students from each branch of engineering are utilising their respective areas of expertise to build prototypes that aid farmers. For instance, the mechanical engineering students built a seed shelling cum sieving machine, automatic seed sowing machine, wheel fertiliser spraying tool, etc while the civil engineering students built an automatic water distribution and an irrigation system and CSE students built a crop prediction app and so on.

The students actively involved themselves in this project and did all the work from clearing the field of grass and weeds to sowing the seeds and taking care of the irrigation and more. This, according to Jagadish, was the sole aim of the project. "We wanted students to completely understand the hard work that goes into farming and that is why we ensured everything was done entirely by them. It is only when they understand the work that they will be able to come up with solutions for this. It is two birds at one shot as students get to use their engineering knowledge to solve real world problems and can even file for patents later and the farmers can be benefitted by these innovations," shares Jagadish, adding, "The way students responded is just astounding. They managed their time well and they took this platform and gave it their 100%."

They want to take it ahead and utilise all the unused land in their college campus and make it a year-long event, as he elaborates, "We kickstarted this as a competition for our annual fest as this year's theme was agriculture. We chose spinach because it gives yield in 45 days but after the response we got, we want to scale it up and make students grow different types of crops, including the ones that take up to a year to yield. Once that is done, we firmly believe this can help farmers extensively and we also hope this inspires students across the nation to take up Campus Farming."

Have you ever wondered why most of us set goals and make time tables and fail to reach the finish line? Is it because of the procrastination or lack of interest or shortage of motivation to complete the tasks? Several factors determine our incompetence towards achieving goals, but most importantly it's our inner self and habits that define our work ethic.

We are not adequately in touch with our inner sphere, our impulses, who we are and where exactly we want to be. We're constantly hustling with our hectic lifestyles and often end up chasing the wrong things.

The author of the book- Atomic Habits James Clear has decoded the characteristics of human habits and presented the ways to bend them according to our convenience. He is an entrepreneur, writer, photographer, and baseball player. It is a Newyork Times bestselling book with more than one million copies sold worldwide since the day of publishing i.e. 18 October 2018.

The book is meticulous with explanations of self-improvement through tiny changes daily, which compound into a habit eventually. It's impressive how he set forth the context of habits being a solution to problems and reflection of our emotional state. We can resonate with the author through his examples and laws proposed. One such fascinating snippet of the book is '4 laws of Behaviour Change'. The author says, to develop a better habit and successfully implement it should be:

1.Obvious.

2.Attractive.

3.Easy.

4.Satisfying.

Encapsulation of the books' core idea is if we're willing to build those small behaviours and layer them with 1% of improvement on top of each other which will compound and multiply results in an immense change of habits. The author also highlights the significance of understanding our habits so that they'll serve in our favor and not downfall. If you're looking for guidance and ideas to improve the quality of life and achieve goals 'Atomic Habits' is a no brainer. This will prompt us with self-inquiry and make us rewire our choices. The book might not be very engaging in the beginning but trust me eventually, you'll be pleased to know all the tricks it has to offer. I'm grateful to my friend who has recommended this book to me, and I hope this book helps you too.

James Clear has been an online blogger for a long time and has more than 8 million people following his newsletter. Here's his website link- jamesclear.com. If you're interested in reading Atomic Habits, here's a free link for the audiobook- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ4N5123MpU.
"}]

In the past few weeks, Corona Virus has been the buzzword on the internet and on news. Thousands of foreign nationals have been evacuated from China, owing to the outbreak of the virus in Wuhan, that has reportedly killed at least 425 people. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared it as a global health emergency, as more than 20000 cases have been reported worldwide. According to reports, the infection is now more widespread than the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak that racked the world in 2002-2003.

What is a Corona Virus?

Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds and in humans, these viruses cause respiratory infections including the common cold.

Originally transmitted between animals and people, there are several corona viruses that have not infected humans yet. These viruses have been named corona because they resemble the solar corona. On January 7, 2020, a novel corona virus has been identified by Chinese authorities and has been named 2019-nCoV. This new strain of the virus has never been identified in humans before and this strain is what is in the news these days.

What are the symptoms?

As per WHO, the signs and symptoms of 2019-nCoV are just like the symptoms of common cold - fever, cough, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties. In extreme cases, it can lead to pneumonia, SARS, renal failure and even death.

Which places have been affected?

China has witnessed the highest number of cases and deaths, specifically in the Hubei province. The virus has spread to many Asian countries and other continents, through people who recently travelled to China.

What are the authorities doing to stop it from spreading?

Top scientists are reportedly working on a vaccine but it is unlikely to be available for mass distribution before 2021.

The Chinese government has effectively sealed off Wuhan and has placed extensive restrictions on travel to and from other cities.

Many airlines have cancelled flights from China and some countries have evacuated their nationals from China. India is also one of those countries.

What can you do to prevent it?

Wash your hands frequently with an alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water. Preferably, keep a hand-sanitizer handy.

When coughing or sneezing, do it into a tissue paper or if that is unavailable, sneeze into your elbow.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.

If possible, wear a face-mask while outside.
"}]

It was on this day, i.e. February 4, in 2004 that Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook, a product that revolutionised social media. While social media is usually associated with fun and making friends and posting pictures did you know it can also be a very useful tool for students to build their career? Almost all platforms that are commonly used, Facebook, Twitter, Quora, etc and more can be used by students to their advantage. Considering the fact that about 70% of employers scan potential employees' social media profiles before hiring, it is imperative that students learn how to use these platforms from a career perspective.

Facebook: Sharing memes and pictures is what students usually use this platform for but building the profile carefully, adding skills and simple acts like liking pages that are of relevance to one's career choices can go a long way. It'll keep one informed of the developments in that particular field and also will create an impression that the person is really into that area of interest. The way the profile is built is also very important as employers usually search for a Facebook profile before anything else; so care should be taken about the bio, pictures, etc.

Twitter: Twitter can be a really powerful tool for students to brand themselves and create a social media image that's relevant. An easy thing that students can do on Twitter is to follow industry experts and keep tweeting to them or retweeting their posts. By tweeting about their projects and other industry updates, it'll create a good social media image for young, career seeking individuals.

Instagram: While this platform is not relevant for all types of professions, those pursuing a career in niche fields like writing, graphic design, marketing, fashion design, etc can make use of this platform to the maximum advantage. This platform is also apt for those who want to pursue a career in such fields, regardless of what their original field of study is as this platform enables easy branding. For instance, someone who is into graphic design can easily post their designs on Instagram or a person whose pursuit is writing can post screenshots of their writings.

LinkedIn: This is probably the most crucial platform regardless of what the career interest is. On this, one can directly get in touch with potential employers, get to know of what the industry trends are and more. Like Facebook, care should be taken in building the profile on this platform too. With the platform itself being a professional one, centered around careers, sharing content that is relevant to one's area of interest puts them one step closer towards landing a desired job.

Quora: This platform provides an easy way to showcase expertise in any particular subject, as it is based on answering specific questions posted by users. It'll also show up on Google searches, enabling easy branding for people who have a fair amount of knowledge in any given area. This is especially useful for engineering students wanting to pursue a career in the IT sector, as there are a lot of questions pertaining to coding and more. Answering them requires expertise, so it's evident to potential employers that a person is skilled.
"}]
Cancer is leading killer disease in the world. In 2015, about 90.5 million people had cancer. About 14.1 million new cases occur a year.It caused about 8.8 million deaths (15.7% of deaths)

The most common types of cancer in males are lung cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer and stomach cancer.

In females, the most common types are breast cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer and cervical cancer.

Cancer is basically a condition of failure of cell division control. Unchecked division of cells leads to formation of neoplasm (tumor).cancer cells actively divide and grow, they starve the normal cells by competing for vital nutrients.

(i) BENIGN (Neoplasm may be harmless)-Leiomyoma (uterine fibroids)

(ii) PRE-MALIGNANT -- in which cells transform into cancerous cells inn due course of time

(iii) MALIGNANT- cancer in which cells invade and destroy surrounding cells forming 'metastasis'

ONCOLOGY- is the branch of medicine that deals with tumors ,including their development ,diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Cancer cells lack

1- contact inhibition

2-anchorage dependence

3-cadherins

4-apoptosis

cancer cells have abnormal changes on their cell surface antigens which can be recognized and destroyed ny NK cells and Tc cells of immune system.

Another important aspect of tumors is- there is increased growth of blood vessels towards the tumors. when tumors grow in size, diffusion of oxygen and nutrients becomes restricted and so tumors resort to attracting more blood vessels from their surrounding matrix(angiogenesis) If extension of blood vessels can be inhibited, the cancer cells starve and die.

People with HIV/AIDS have an increased risk of developing the following cancers: Kaposi sarcoma.

Lymphoma--A cancer of the lymphatic system.

Leukemia--A cancer of blood-forming tissues, hindering the body's ability to fight infection.

Melanoma--The most serious type of skin cancer.

Prostate cancer--A cancer in a man's prostate, a small walnut-sized gland that produces seminal fluid.

Breast cancer--A cancer that forms in the cells of the breasts

CANCERS CAUSED BY VIRUSES:

Human papilloma viruses (HPVs) - Cervical cancer

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)- “kissing disease.”

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV)- liver cancer

Human T-lymphotrophic virus-1 (HTLV-1)

now a days there is no need to worry much about cancers...early detection of cancers and cure is present in every country.

When ever we find any abnormalities, we should consult a doctor, otherwise when things go out of hands.. things will get more worse.

"}]
