I was lost in a caffeine induced literary pursuit at a coffee shop when I saw a bunch of students huddled over a table, intently listening to one person among them. Their wide-eyed awe was evident on their faces and curious, I eavesdropped in a little. What I heard shocked me because my initial assumption that they were planning some event or doing some student-ish thing was proven wrong and they were listening to a person who was pitching them a multi-level-marketing (MLM) scheme.

txt
rich_1483684304440

We've all heard of these from weird uncles pitching these ideas to our parents when we were kids, where they buy a product and make two/three people buy it and they in turn, have to make two/three people to buy it again and so on and so forth. What surprised me was that now, students who are barely out of their teens, are being targeted by these MLM, Ponzi scamsters and students themselves are unknowingly becoming scamsters, as Ramesh*, a CSE student explains.

"I was approached by my classmate, who was pitching a website which supposedly teaches one how to code. He paid ₹10000 for access to that website and was in turn, told to make three other students sign up. Initially I was curious so I just checked out the website but I wasn't surprised when the website didn't function," says Ramesh, who also added "My friend himself became a victim of this and he made several other classmates sign up for this; not realising he is a part of a big scam."

Students are also approached directly by people who are a direct part of these MLM schemes; at coffee shops where students are known to frequent. These people are usually smooth-talkers who try to emotionally manipulate students into being a part of the scam, as Vishwesh* a Mass Com student explains, "I was sitting with my friends at a cafe and we were approached by this man who wanted to sell us these hygiene and skincare products. I had heard of these MLM scams earlier so I was wary but as we listened to this man, we realised he was trying to emotionally manipulate us. He was saying things like "How long will you be a burden to your parents, you can do this and be self reliant even when you are a student". Thankfully, none of us fell into the trap."

By this, it is evident that cafes and bakeries where students frequently hang out, have become places for these scamsters to target students. stuMagz urges every student to be careful and not fall into these traps.
"}]

Born on January 7th, 1827. the Scottish-Canadian engineer/inventor lived in times when the local time was set using solar clocks, which works great as long as you don't leave the area you check the time in and want a rough estimate, but it was not accurate. In 1876, when Fleming was in Ireland, a mistake in the timetable caused him to miss his train, which turned into his inspiration to come up with a single 24-hour clock for the entire world, located at the center of the Earth, not linked to any surface meridian. After conducting research and studying time, Fleming presented his findings to the Royal Canadian Institute, of which he was a founding member, on February 8, 1879. It took another 5 years for it to be planned properly and implemented, and on January 1st, 1885, 25 countries adopted Fleming's proposal of Standard Time and Time Zones.

Harshdeep Champaneri and his team, Yash Chauhan and Sarang Kachhadiya are examples on how sheer will and determination can take you places, especially when it comes to the cut throat world of startups.

Harshdeep was kind enough to speak to stuMagz about his initiative, "We wanted to create a social networking app where you can compare things to make an informed decision", he says, "for example, you want to buy something on one the eCommerce websites available to the Indian consumer, say a DSLR, you can post it on our app and your friends will come up with price comparisons from various websites. You can also post price comparisons yourself and wait to see if one of your friends can find a better deal."

"Currently, the app is in beta, we have received tremendous response to the app wherever we've presented it, people really like the idea and want to be a part of this," he continued, speaking about the app, "the full app is being launched on January 30th, which is later this month."

Harshdeep spoke at length about participating in hackatons for the experience and ideas, slowly coming up with a plan for the app, over a period of 1 and half years, "We bootstrapped with Rs. 80000, which we raised ourselves, conducting workshops in various colleges," he says, "it's been an incredible journey so far, and we have a lot more to do in the coming months."

Bootstrapping a startup using your own hard earned cash is something truly inspirational, and shows the amount of faith in the product, we wish the team at Punch It the best of luck, the app is available to download on the Play store, check out their website by clicking here.
If you are a student entrepreneur yourself, apply for the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards, are all set to be held in Frankfurt very soon.
