The "Student Of The Year" competition by Stumagz in Vaagdevi Engineering College was held on 30th March 2017. The participation from our college can only be called extremely enthusiastic as we had a great turnout.

Students with various, sometimes unparalleled, skills and talents participated in the Student of the Year competition, in an effort to be recognised for the fantastic talent they have on stuMagz, where there are no boundaries to the talent they posses.

If the only purpose of SOTY was to bring out the hidden talent from the college, it succeeded tremendously, as it gave an opportunity to even those who were too shy or too uncaring to participate. It brought the college together like never before.

The judges had t go through the many talents of our college, judging students proficient in singing, painting, innovating, event managing and so many more! After all of this, they zeroed in on the three people that would win glory in the first ever Student of the Year competition, their names are as follows:

Fathima Samreen - Winner

R.Kushal Kumar - Runner Up

As the season of winter begins to turn, we had an opportunity to be acquainted with stuMagz, the online student magazine which proved it was no less than many other popular magazines, with it's target crowd being us students. It's unique qualities caught the attention of students from across various colleges, and it was after this they came up with the fantastic Student of the Year competition, an idea that brought out the best among students.

stuMagz wasted no time in starting the hunt for the best talents in various colleges, and we were eager to be a part of it. Today, we are proud to announce the winners to the Student of the Year competition held in Vaagdevi College of Engineering.

Government jobs, or sarkari naukri as they're more popularly known, are everyone's favourite jobs, quite literally, because of the great job security and benefits they offer. Due to the nature of the jobs themselves, it is understandable that competition is high, and while the pay is not as good as a private job, the benefits you get in return more than make up for it. So, without further ado, here's what you need to do to get a government job straight out of engineering

1. The GATE Exam

A graduate from BITS Pilani, Sudheendra co-founded Belong.co, an online recruiting platform based in Bengaluru. With about 100 employees, the company aims to bring companies and candidates together so that they can create maximum impact in the world.

Having realised that humans spend most of their waking hours working, he wanted to figure out a way to ensure people who truly belong at a company, get there. "As human beings we spend 60% of our waking lives working. UPSC exams is no laughing matter, it has given even the brightest minds in India a run for their money, and when it comes to preparing for the UPSC while also in engineering, the prospect can sound daunting and exhausting, not to mention impossible, but as a wise man once said, nothing is impossible if you set your heart to it.

After going through multiple Quora answers and reading testimonials, here are the top 5 points that, if followed religiously, will set you on the path to the civil services of India.

1. Prepare Your Mind and Body

You don't have to go all Kung Fu Panda and achieve inner peace, but you need to have an unquenchable thirst for information, and your body has to be healthy and fit enough to take on whatever you throw at it, both to be able to study without reproach and to retain all the information you consume.

2. Make a time table and stick to it

It goes without saying that UPSC exams require serious preparation to crack, there are some who never leave the rooms they are preparing in until absolutely necessary until exam day, but then, since you're an engineering student, you do not exactly have that luxury since you have classes to attend (unless you're going into the 4th year, which means you do have that luxury).

By managing your time with an airtight time table that gives enough time for preparations and your engineering subjects, and you also get to have fun on the weekends. All of this is only possible if you stick to your schedule religiously.

3. All work and no play makes Jack a very dull boy

It is very easy to go off into the twilight zone while you're studying for the UPSC, and by that I mean it's incredibly easy to lose yourself in books and become addicted to consuming information, no matter how irrelevant it is to the UPSC exam. You need to let your mind cool down from time to time, it is not a machine, you aren't a machine, and even computers need a restart every now and then to clear space on the RAM.

Also if anyone ever tells you that if you struggle now, life will be easy later, please laugh directly in their face, point at them and laugh if possible. Live your life now, in this moment, be ambitious to take on the UPSC, but also remember who you are and where you come from. If you keep pushing yourself to study more without breaks, you're only setting yourself up for a massive burnout. So chill and pursue your hobbies from time to time, without forgetting that you have a strict time table to stick to.

4. Read at least 4 newspapers

Knowing current events and the pulse of the times is an important part of preparing for the UPSC, and the best way to equip yourself with this info is to read at least 4 newspapers, 2 in English, and 2 in the local language. Not only does this provide you with context for both local happenings, but also enables you to know your surroundings and your country better, which will better help serve the nation once you crack the UPSC.

5. Make CSAT your strength

Phase 1 of the UPSC has you writing the CSAT which you, coming from an engineering background, can turn into an advantage and score the highest marks in this phase of the examination. By sticking to the schedule and studying, you can turn your fortune around at the UPSC. I believe in you.

Experts believe that 8 to 10 months of rigorous preparation for the UPSC is enough to crack the prestigious exam. Luckily, you have time on your side if you decide to prepare early, but that doesn't mean starting your preparations a bit late (say at the start of 4th year) is a bad thing.
