On this day 13 years ago, a student sitting in his room coding away to glory built and released what has now become THE name for social media and has changed the way we network, bond, engage and receive information. Yes, I am talking about Facebook, which currently has an estimated 1.86 billion users. If the users of Facebook are made into a country, it will have about 28% of the world's current population.

As a user of such a platform and as someone who makes a living through social media, over the years I've met and worked with some individuals who use social platforms to carefully build their image and use that for future opportunities. I can firmly say I am also guilty of using social media to construct and maintain the image that I have been maintaining, to ensure my present and future career opportunities in my avenue.

This is more so, in the case of entrepreneurs as what kind of a person he/she is can easily be judged through their social media profiles and most entrepreneurs, are known for having a carefully constructed social presence, with calculated posts.

This, I believe, is something that every student should do as according to some surveys, about 41% of employers check their potential employees' social media profiles before hiring. We all know how difficult it is to not share the funny cat videos or Harambe memes but it is important to understand that unlike what we say directly in our interpersonal communications, what we write/share/post on social media is there to stay.

In this context, it is imperative for students to realise and understand the kind of image they want to portray on social media. To start off with, students can first refine their 'about' section on their social profiles. So that means no more "works at student" or "works at federation of lazy and jobless people". And at least a few months before entering into the placements-job-hunt world, one should post/share content that is related to their areas of interest and their skill sets.

You never know which potential opportunity has eyes on you on social media.
"}]
Yeah! It's exams time, a terror in every student's life. Only a student knows the pain of exams and the happiness when they clear all their exams.

So how it starts!

It starts with the schedule post in WhatsApp groups. All the freaking emojis comes out.

This is all a week before exams, alert bell rings. Then exactly a hunt begins to find out the subjects, materials etc. Exactly at this point of time assignments and records comes into picture. We are already fed up with the syllabus 'what are these?'- Feeling of every student. But we will ever miss a chance to get marks for assignments because those are something which we get free of cost.

Since we are engineering students, very good at copy and paste, by hook or crook we copy everything much better than any xerox.

This is a crucial period, so every student visits their worship place. Please don't think off any temple or church, they are nothing but xerox centers. These will be flooded with students for micro xerox.

The night before exam, when the WhatsApp groups will be busy as ever before. Night outs, group studies, collection of important questions, what not!

On the day of exam, as soon as you enter the hall the exam chair looks like a throne full of thorns. A thought hits the mind 'Why should we sit for three long hours?'. But we are left with no other option.

And there comes the one and only enemy of every student - 'THE QUESTION PAPER'. We have our enemy right in front of us and all the grudge but don't know what to do. A very pathetic situation to look at your friend beside you and his priceless expression. Helpless.

However, out of the hall. What comes next? The most annoying thing - 'THE RESULTS'. We prepare our mind to face them. But again the same thing 'A BACKLOG'.

Uff! God!! Why do you have all the grace on toppers.

I hope every engineering student can relate.

This is the exam cycle, don't know when it ends.

Our heart goes out to the poor and the destitute of the city when we see them suffering, begging for something as basic as a glass of water at times, their bones sticking out of their thin frame, often hunched with the burdens of an unfair life. We wonder what we can do for such people, Goutham Kumar had a similar thought in his mind a few years ago.

"I remember there was this woman who was selling her mangalsutra to pay for the ambulance so that she could perform her husband's last rites. All of this while the ambulance was waiting for payment, the children were crying next to the body and stone faced people watched on helplessly. When you see something like that it really cuts into your heart," shares Goutham, recounting an incident he was a witness of.

"I drifted from job to job not realizing that working in a corporate setting was not making me happy, I even dabbled in media hoping to find satisfaction in what I do, and yet it remained ever elusive. It wasn't until I volunteered at an orphanage that I found my true calling," he says, speaking about the start of his journey, "speaking to children about their hopes and dreams, their needs, I came to a realization that there are so many people that need help, and decided to do something about it, that's how Serve Needy came into existence."

In 2012, the Indian government stated 22% of its population is below its official poverty limit. The World Bank, in 2011 based on 2005's PPPs International Comparison Program, estimated 23.6% of Indian population, or about 276 million people, lived below $1.25 per day on purchasing power parity, of these, 1.77 million homeless people in India, or 0.15% of the country's total population. There is a shortage of 18.78 million houses in the country. Total number of houses has increased from 52.06 million to 78.48 million(as per 2011 census). Further, there are over 200 million people in India who do not know where their next meal is going to come from, and often spend their days hungry, or eating just once a day.

"We have several projects in Serve Needy, one of them being Annadata," says Goutham, "we collect leftover food, mostly from function halls, put them in freezers, and the next day, test to see if it's still good before serving it to the needy. Freezers are a necessity here because usually functions happen in the evening, and we can only collect food at and around midnight. So often we have to depend on freezers to keep the food fresh till we can serve it" he explains. Serve Needy has fed 1 lakh 50 thousand people since Project Annadata began.

"Some of our other projects are called Save a Life, Last Rites for Orphan Dead Bodies, and Daily Medical Service," he explains further, "We try and and check if an abandoned person is missing from a home or has a criminal record and inform the police accordingly, and if not, we relocate them to homes where they are taken care of. The goal of this mission is to reunite lost people with their families, or to give them new homes where they can spend the rest of their years. As for Last rites, when we get a call about a orphan and unclaimed dead body, we go and perform the last rights according to their religion. There's no discrimination in death, after all" he smiles.

"The Daily Medical Service is a recent initiative for which we bought an ambulance, a nurse, a helper and a driver. I usually go along with them every day and help the poor, often those who cannot even walk to go to a government hospital. We go and help them where we can and make sure they get the medical attention they need," speaking about his new initiative, "I'm sure this is something that is the first of it's kind in India."

There are many who fall through the cracks in society into obscurity, and it warms our hearts that there are people like Goutham Kumar who take the initiative and care for these people. "It's almost like a full time job now. At one point I had to choose between personal life and social service, and I chose social service. There are no regrets, too many people ignore the poor, their voices are disregarded, they are looked down upon, and frankly that is insulting. Every human has a right to a dignified life, even those who are often unseen, and uncared for" he concludes, with conviction in his voice.

From birth to adolescence to adulthood, parents tend to invest precious time and effort into their child’s life by picking out what is best for them. They engage their son or daughter in various extracurricular actives such as sports, performing arts, and tutoring to be on track with grades regardless of what it costs. They help in making significant life decisions, like deciding which college to go or which career to pursue. Decisions which ultimately make-or-break the individual you befit in the near future. Nonetheless, every parent wants their child to have the limestone in society.

But when does helping turn into hovering?

Living through countless years of helicopter parenting has been an agonizing issue for many amongst us. A helicopter parent is a term used to describe a guardian who is constantly on top of his or her child by meticulously observing every action they take. While it is important for parents to be involved in their children's lives, parents must slowly begin to take a step back as their children near adulthood. In some cases hovering may actually give the opposite of the intended effect. For instance, take a butterfly that evolves from a cocoon. If it opens the cocoon by its self, it flies fairly. However, if you’re too generous and rip its cocoon open in the intension of helping it come out to the world, it will spread its wings open in attempt to take flight but eventually falls and crashes. Hovering parents confine growth by not letting their children take responsibility for their actions and proper judgment when it is needed. Parents obviously would like to believe that their kids will always be "their kids" but their is incredible merit to be gained from teaching them independence. In general, such parenting has more flaws than benefits towards society and future generations.
I get it, your children are precious to you, but they are people with their own thoughts, dreams and hopes. Let them go, let them breathe, let them live.
"}]

What type of career do you aspire to have? Do you want to be an artist, a business person, or a policymaker? Or, have you ever wanted to become a farmer? I would not be surprised if you said no. When weighing career choices, many young people in the developing world tend to shy away from agriculture. I, too, once found myself disenchanted by the small villages and rice fields I grew up seeing every day. As the conventional belief goes, agriculture means an archaic lifestyle and a future with limited opportunities for youth. But I later learned I was wrong. Plenty of evidence shows us that agriculture provides youth a viable way to harvest success and grow a sustainable future. In other words, I believe youth can, and should, choose agriculture. Here are five reasons:

1. Agriculture matters to the future of development.

Agriculture is up to four times more effective than other sectors in reducing poverty. Increasingly, the world is counting on agriculture to produce more nutritious food for — and improve the livelihoods of — a booming population, especially the poor. What could be more meaningful than being part of a proven solution to such a critical challenge?

2. Agriculture can be a gold mine for young entrepreneurs.

Meet Randa Filfili, a young entrepreneur from Senegal. She is also the first Senegalese producer who saw value in the fruit of cashew trees that others had considered waste, and turned it into “niche” jam products for export. Through agribusiness, Randa has not only carved out a successful career of her own, but also helped local farmers reach global markets, and create jobs for other young people — especially women. So, the next time you come across Randa’s all-natural cashew apple butter in your local produce store, think about how you can also start up a business in agriculture to help both yourself and the rural poor.

3. Agriculture is not cool? Think again.

In Uganda, a young team with the World Bank and UNICEF used a mobile and web-based app called “U-Report” to swiftly help 190,000 farmers save their bananas — a staple food for Ugandans — from a vicious disease. Countries like Kenya and Rwanda are also eager to boost productivity through information and communication technologies and other creative solutions. Agriculture in the developing world has become a field vibrant with effective innovations, thanks to a growing number of young techie minds that make it happen.

4. Agricultural research needs young brainpower.

If you are a “young nerd” into development research, agriculture may be the right place for you. Numerous stories from East Africa and other places have shown that research revolutionizes agriculture and transforms livelihoods. Today, more than before, climate change and a growing demand for nutritious food are for fresh ideas and renewed knowledge to explore ICT in agriculture, foster climate-smart agriculture and innovate in the sector to power future growth.

5. The trend of youth choosing agriculture is growing.

Attitudes toward agriculture are already changing. In Cameroon, where agriculture is becoming more competitive, young educated Cameroonians “have decided to become farmers, acquire land, grow maize professionally for trade, and manage their enterprises in order to earn a living,” according to Félix Nkapemin, an agricultural expert working with local farmers. Other countries like Armenia, Brazil, Malawi, and Senegal are investing in youth and agriculture with the support from the World Bank Group and other development organizations. Young people are also increasingly speaking up for themselves on why they choose agriculture.

The trend is growing. Support for the agriculture sector is increasing. The list of reasons is endless. This International Youth Day, I invite you to share your thoughts and experiences on why you think youth should engage in agriculture, and how it can help reduce poverty and boost shared prosperity.
"}]

You've got more work than you can possibly handle. Not to mention the time you're spending as a student in your college, or as a footballer of some prestigious team.

Your phone rings and it's a call from the president of one of the societies in your college and he describes how busy he is in completing some other piece of business and assigns you a task that has to be completed urgently.
You know this project will involve countless hours of work, including weekends. You get a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. Your heart tells you to say "no." Your spirit tells you to say "no." But somehow, what comes out of your mouth is "Yeah, I'll do it."

What happened here? How did "no" turn into "yes?" Maybe you didn't want to let others down. Or, perhaps, you wanted to be liked. For whatever reason, you agreed to do something that you didn't want to do. For most of my life, I lived this way, saying "yes" when I really wanted to say "no." I'll bet you've done the same thing many times.
I know what some of you are thinking. If I say "no" to any of these things, I'm going to look bad or am going to have a bad impression on the Mister Big.. For example, if I decline a request from my supervisor, I'll be viewed as someone who isn't loyal to the team. Also, if I say "no" to attending my cousin's wedding (the cousin I haven't seen in 15 years), the rest of the family will be talking about me.

Yes, there are consequences to saying "no." But let's not kid ourselves here. There are also consequences to saying "yes" when you don't want to say "yes." You become resentful and angry. You feel that you're not in control of your own life. You're not living a life that's consistent with your values and priorities.
I'm not encouraging you to become lazy and refuse to go the extra mile at work and in your personal life. We all do activities that we don't particularly enjoy, like working through lunch during a fest in college or attending a compulsory workshop after the long day of classes in college..

Furthermore, this isn't about being selfish and thinking only of your own interests. But I'm here to say that YOU count, too! And you block your own success when you feel resentful about doing things you don't want to do. Unwanted activities are not only time consuming; they drain your energy.

So, what can you do to help you say "no" instead of "yes?" It's very helpful to set boundaries, because that will help dictate your answer when someone asks you to do something. Even better, let people know about these boundaries beforehand so they won't be taken by surprise when you say "no." For instance, if you resolve that you won't work for some project on weekends (except in certain limited, emergency situations), when someone asks you to assist on Saturday, you can decline and tell them you spend weekends with your family.

For me, my dancing time on Saturday and Sunday is sacred. If someone asks me to do something during those times, I will politely say "no" because I value my passion way too much to let other things get in the way.

If anyone thinks I'm being unreasonable, that's okay. I feel better about the decision I've made because I'm being true to what's important in my life. As a result, I've found that I’m happier and stronger all the week round.

You might think that you're indispensable, that you have to say "yes" because the world will fall apart if you don't run to the rescue each time. What nonsense! In the end, you let yourself down and wind up feeling hurt.

Here's the bottom line: You're allowed to say "no." It's a small two-letter word with the power to liberate you and significantly improve the quality of your life.
"}]

"}]
