Everyone is talented at something. It may be sports, drawing, playing a musical instrument or writing. Some people discover this almost instantly, while others do not realize it at all. Same thing happened with my friend.

One day our college conducted a rangoli competition for all under graduate students with 2 members in each team. And they also said that winner would get a surprise gift from their class incharge. All were excited. Majority took participation in the competition. My friend asked me to join with her in the competition. But, I don't even know how to hold muggu. I said the some thing to her. Then she said me not to worry, she said she knows everything and can complete in a given time. She only asked me to be beside her and help in filling the muggu with colours.

The next day we both brought our collection of rangolis and she asked me to choose the best one out of them. I selected a design and wanted to present that. I was so excited and I was waiting for that day to come.

Atlast the day came and I felt nervous because I don't know anything. Then my friend stood beside me and encouraged me by saying "SOMETHING IS BETTER THAN NOTHING". She asked me to participate and said will give our best. She also said, instead of doing nothing, We'll do something even it's small, because it will be one step close for winning. By listening to her I felt that was true and we both participated.

The competition has started and time limit was 45 minutes. We both were nervous but wanted to give our best. She took the muggu and started keeping dots and I took initiative of coloring so I arranged all the colours in different bowls and kept ready. After she completed her muggu we both took colours and started filling muggu with different colours. I did nothing, I only coloured a flower and everything was done by her. We completed it in the given time. It was really amazing. I dint even thought that my friend can do this very well. I felt our rangoli was the best. All our teaching and non-teaching staff appreciated us by seeing our rangoli. Later the results were announced. I was surprised when I came to know that, we got second place. This is all because of her. The next day we received our gifts from our class incharge.

From that day, she was recognized by everyone in the college. If there is any event occurring in our college she'll take the initiative to decorate the enterence with rangoli.

In a first move by all Indian Institutes of Technology, IIT Hyderabad will now allow students to take a 6-month break during their graduation course to pursue an internship of their choice. This is a welcome move as it gives students a much needed break for them to pursue an internship and get industry exposure. Students can also take a one-year break if they have a startup idea that they want to pursue.

According to a report in The New Indian Express, the director of IIT-H, Professor BS Murty, said, "Several B-Tech students have been requesting for long leaves to work on startup ideas and to take up internships. To enable it for students, the institute has decided to take this step," adding, "Students can apply for the sabbatical if they come up with an idea for a startup that demands their complete attention. Regardless of how small or big or how successful the idea is, we want students to give in their 100% to come up with innovations."

Further lending support to the students, the institution will also let students stay on campus during the sabbatical and students can also utilise campus resources and infrastructure to pursue the idea. The sabbatical facility will be made available from the academic year 2020-21 onwards.

According to the director, any student of the institution can apply for this break if they have an idea to work on. "If the idea works out, the students can join the institution for a period of up to four years and if it doesn't work out, they can just rejoin the institute and finish their existing course," the director reportedly said, with a spirit of supporting and enabling innovation. The institution is reportedly expecting at least 25% students to take a leave of absence to work on startups and will also consider allotting funds to the ideas.

Also, considering that students have been complaining about lack of time to pursue internships as the summer break is not enough time to gain enough experience. Sixth semester students will be given the option of taking a 6-month break to pursue internships and the institution is also mulling over the idea of giving a certain number of credits to the internship while the remaining credits of the semester can be adjusted over the next semesters.

This is a great move by IIT-H and considering how real-world experience is much needed for freshers, it is high time all other institutions take up moves like this, especially in the startup aspect.
"}]

Among all the days observed, there's also a World Read Aloud Day and on that day in this year, over 30 students volunteering with the Youngistaan Foundation celebrated it in a unique way, with a new initiative. They spent the day with 800 underprivileged children in various locations in the city and had a one-of-a-kind interactive session where they read a book aloud for these children.

Sounds interesting? Well it is, as it involved a lot more than just reading out from a book, as Ruthvika, one of the volunteers, explains, "We wanted to do something that isn't just done in that day and instead, triggers something in these children. People aren't into reading usually and it is more so with children in government schools, owing to their socio-economic backgrounds and that is why we wanted to do this. We already have an initiative - Bright Spark, through which we undertake such events and as a part of that, we wanted to do an interactive learning/activity based learning event and that's how it happened."

To kickstart this, they first had extensive training sessions for all the volunteers for a few weeks before the event, as these volunteers should also know what and how to read. In these sessions, a Neha Mathur, a professional story-teller, trained the students on the right intonation, the right diction and more.

After gearing up with the training, the 30 students then gathered 50-80 school children at each location and they held the session that aimed at expanding the child's imagination and vocabulary in addition to inculcating a habit of reading among the students. "A primary goal of this was to make sure these kids learn how to communicate instead of rote learning. In our earlier sessions, when we wanted children to express something, we used to ask them to draw and use art as a medium as these children lack the skills to communicate effectively through speaking or writing. Through this event, we aimed at building effective communication skills in these children, which then will go a long way into their lives," shares Ruthvika, who is currently pursuing her Master's in Journalism.

Another interesting aspect is their choice of story that they read to the children. It's a children's book called Angry Akku, which talks about a little girl who is very angry. "We chose this book because this book introduces the aspect of solving a problem systematically. Being able to approach a problem in the right manner to solve it is crucial and we wanted to hit multiple birds with one shot. Through this event, these students not only understood the joys of reading but also got to know life skills and how they can develop them," says Ruthvika.

They now want to make it a regular event and also train the English teachers at government schools to ensure the language and the necessary communication skills are taught to students in the right manner.

There have been several initiatives taken up by students and we've written about them many times but this initiative intrigued me extensively when I came across this. A bunch of students, calling themselves 'Techies for Karshaks', have started an initiative called Campus Farming, wherein multiple teams of students farm a piece of land inside Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT), Basara, utilising what they learnt in their engineering to develop farming techniques to help farmers. Yes, you read that right, engineering students are farming to solve real world farming problems.

The idea first popped up in 2018, when Jagadishwar, Srikanth, Sandeep and Aditya decided to develop working models for farmers, as Jagadishwar explains, "We wanted to utilise our tech know-how to help farmers and as a pilot project, we got the idea in 2018 but we could not take it ahead back then because of time constraints. Techies for Karshaks was born then and finally in January 2020, we started this project kickstarted when college allotted us 1.5 acres of campus land for this purpose."

The 1.5 acre piece of land within RGUKT campus was divided into 9 parts with each of the 7 branches of engineering in the college receiving a part and the two Pre-University Course batches receiving a part each. The students themselves formed teams of about 30 people each and started planting spinach and coriander, as these two crops give the quickest yield.

An interesting aspect here is that students from each branch of engineering are utilising their respective areas of expertise to build prototypes that aid farmers. For instance, the mechanical engineering students built a seed shelling cum sieving machine, automatic seed sowing machine, wheel fertiliser spraying tool, etc while the civil engineering students built an automatic water distribution and an irrigation system and CSE students built a crop prediction app and so on.

The students actively involved themselves in this project and did all the work from clearing the field of grass and weeds to sowing the seeds and taking care of the irrigation and more. This, according to Jagadish, was the sole aim of the project. "We wanted students to completely understand the hard work that goes into farming and that is why we ensured everything was done entirely by them. It is only when they understand the work that they will be able to come up with solutions for this. It is two birds at one shot as students get to use their engineering knowledge to solve real world problems and can even file for patents later and the farmers can be benefitted by these innovations," shares Jagadish, adding, "The way students responded is just astounding. They managed their time well and they took this platform and gave it their 100%."

They want to take it ahead and utilise all the unused land in their college campus and make it a year-long event, as he elaborates, "We kickstarted this as a competition for our annual fest as this year's theme was agriculture. We chose spinach because it gives yield in 45 days but after the response we got, we want to scale it up and make students grow different types of crops, including the ones that take up to a year to yield. Once that is done, we firmly believe this can help farmers extensively and we also hope this inspires students across the nation to take up Campus Farming."

Have you ever wondered why most of us set goals and make time tables and fail to reach the finish line? Is it because of the procrastination or lack of interest or shortage of motivation to complete the tasks? Several factors determine our incompetence towards achieving goals, but most importantly it's our inner self and habits that define our work ethic.

We are not adequately in touch with our inner sphere, our impulses, who we are and where exactly we want to be. We're constantly hustling with our hectic lifestyles and often end up chasing the wrong things.

The author of the book- Atomic Habits James Clear has decoded the characteristics of human habits and presented the ways to bend them according to our convenience. He is an entrepreneur, writer, photographer, and baseball player. It is a Newyork Times bestselling book with more than one million copies sold worldwide since the day of publishing i.e. 18 October 2018.

The book is meticulous with explanations of self-improvement through tiny changes daily, which compound into a habit eventually. It's impressive how he set forth the context of habits being a solution to problems and reflection of our emotional state. We can resonate with the author through his examples and laws proposed. One such fascinating snippet of the book is '4 laws of Behaviour Change'. The author says, to develop a better habit and successfully implement it should be:

1.Obvious.

2.Attractive.

3.Easy.

4.Satisfying.

Encapsulation of the books' core idea is if we're willing to build those small behaviours and layer them with 1% of improvement on top of each other which will compound and multiply results in an immense change of habits. The author also highlights the significance of understanding our habits so that they'll serve in our favor and not downfall. If you're looking for guidance and ideas to improve the quality of life and achieve goals 'Atomic Habits' is a no brainer. This will prompt us with self-inquiry and make us rewire our choices. The book might not be very engaging in the beginning but trust me eventually, you'll be pleased to know all the tricks it has to offer. I'm grateful to my friend who has recommended this book to me, and I hope this book helps you too.

James Clear has been an online blogger for a long time and has more than 8 million people following his newsletter. Here's his website link- jamesclear.com. If you're interested in reading Atomic Habits, here's a free link for the audiobook- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ4N5123MpU.
"}]
