Did you know that advocates claimed that running barefoot improves foot biomechanics and reduces injury risk. And also that studies have found that running efficiency increases by 4% while running barefoot? If you didn’t then you know now. But does that mean running barefoot is a good thing? If it is then I wonder why most podiatrists still prescribe orthotics to relieve foot pain. So to this day there is not an answer to the question of whether or not running barefoot is good as there are both pros and cons to this question.

Pros of running barefoot:

It strengthen the muscles, tendons and ligaments present in the foot.

When not wearing a shoe you do not have a heel lift due to this the Achilles tendon and calf muscles are stretched and lenghtened. Alongside, this also redues the risk of injuries such as calf pulls and Achilles tendinitis caused by short tight tissues.

When you where shoes it leads you to land on your heel which is not an effective way of running. But whereas when you run without shoes you do not have the padding underneath your feet leading to you landing on your forefoot while running which then allows the arches of your feet to act as effective shock absorbers and also help in running effectively.

Besides all these running barefoot helps you to be grounded as you will be in contact with the nature surrounding you and also because it helps you improve your balance as it activates and puts in use the small muscles that are unused.

After taking all this into consideration if you do think of running barefoot remember to slowly adapt to it instead of switching from shoes to barefeet instantly as even that has a lot of side effects to it.
