I love Vizag, it's a beautiful and quaint place that has a charm of its own, and if you live on or near beach road, it's even better! However, if you're a resident, it's only natural for you to feel like going out of the city and exploring the far horizons, so here's a list of road trips you can make from Vizag

1. Araku Valley

While we strongly recommend the train ride to Araku, the road trip is worth it as well. Nestled in the Eastern Ghats, about 110 kilometres from Vizag, it's a beautiful valley with greener everywhere and some really top class coffee.

2. Drive along the east coast

The east coast, from Vizag to Machlipatnam and further is quite beautiful, with the sea on one side and the road under you. You feel like you can drive forever, a free spirit where only you and the road matters. It's an experience to be had.

3. Drive south to Chennai and Pondicherry

People really underestimate how huge India is sometimes. Vizag to Pondicherry is nearly a 1000 kilometre journey, all along the eastern coast, with the sun rising and the sea roaring on your left as you blaze down the beautiful countryside going south. Might get a little expensive, but hey, it's worth the experience.

4. Visit Puri

If you don't want to drive all the way down to Pondicherry, set your sights north on the coastal highway and go to the city of Puri. The Jagannath Temple in the city is a sight to behold, and worth the experience, we guarantee it.

5. The southern tip

1500 kilometres of open, free roads, and that is just one way. Vizag to Kanyakumari, along the east coast road, touching beautiful little villages, temples and sights along the way, is one of those once in a life time journeys that will remain with you forever. The sights you will see, the people you'll meet, the experiences you'll have, you'll never have again.

So why wait?

The International English Language Testing System is the world's most popular English Language testing system, as the name very clearly implies, and is jointly conducted by the British Council, IDP:IELTS Australia and the Cambridge English Language Assessment, the results of which show how proficient you are with the English language because the score carries a lot of weight when it comes to applying to foreign universities.

So today, we have a list on how to prepare for the IELTS, efficiently, and effectively.

1. Understand the test format

IELTS is not your typical exam, trying to attempt it blind because you think it's just an English exam is one of the biggest blunders you can make. Understand the test format, and start planning how to ace it right from there. It doesn't matter how easy you think it is, just because you heard some people say it is, do not underestimate the test.

2. Practice speaking in front of a mirror

Speaking is an integral part of the IELTS test, and it is imperative that you speak confidently and with a smile (although nobody will be around to judge you smiling, but do it anyway, it'll add to the confidence boost.)

The most important thing to remember here is to maintain fluency and speak confidently. Of course you can't learn this right before an exam, so make it a habit to speak in English for at least an hour or two per day, or try speaking to yourself in the mirror. Talk about your day, talk about what you felt and make sure you maintain that fluency required to get the points you need.

3. Don't fear the listening part of the test

If you watch a lot of English movies and TV shows, then this part will be incredibly easy for you. If you don't, however, and have trouble understanding British and American accents, it is my strong advise to watch English news channels daily until you start processing the English you hear normally and don't have to struggle to keep up. Bonus point is that you'll also get to improve your general knowledge.

4. Reading and Writing

Personally, I feel these are the toughest parts of the test. Many people fail to plan their time properly and also panic while during the writing section. This, unfortunately, cannot be fixed without proper practice if you aren't used to reading novels or books in general. A great way to learn how to read efficiently and process the information would be to read newspapers everyday, or pick up reading novels.

As for the writing, check out sample essays, read what people who've cleared or topped IELTS have to say on blogs, ask for advise from your seniors, watch YouTube videos. The internet is a great resource, but no amount of looking up information will help you as much as practising will, which brings us to the final point.

5. Practice, and practice some more

This is one of those exams where only your regular practice can help you tide the wave. The internet is your resource, use it to solve example papers, do mock tests, listen to news reports in English (preferably BBC), and make an effort to speak in English, whether it is to yourself or to someone else, it doesn't matter. Just make sure you are confident enough to speak. I know you are, I believe in you.

That sounds like a dream come true when it applies to things like restaurants, theatres, etc and yet we fail to appreciate this incredible privilege when it comes to the college library. Unlike in restaurants and theatres, you also get that much needed peace and quiet to get your stuff done, whether it is a really intense texting session, an assignment that was due yesterday, a story you’re working on or the new episode of GoT. The library is my escape mechanism when I just want to retreat from the electrifyingly social world of college. I’ve always been very vocal about the thing I love the most about my college: basketball and everything that comes with it. So, I’ve decided to talk about the thing I love the second-most about my college. The library. Yes. Sounds pretty nerdy I know, but hear me out and you might just realize just how underrated the CBIT library is.

Let me get right into this. Shade, tables, fans and free wifi. It’s the one place I can completely geek out and not stick out like a three-foot fish in a planetarium.

The books it holds only makes all the more attractive. While textbooks are only to be used the week before exams, the reference books, magazines, novels and stories are to die for. I once spent a whole evening reading about genetics just because I felt like it. The novels are genuine, not-trying-to-trick-you-into-studying novels, including the likes of 'The Fountainhead', 'The Witch of Portobello' and even some in Hindi and Telugu.

Ever walk into a fancy coffee shop with a spiral bound journal and a pen and instantly feel like a hipster-poet-writer? That’s what walking into the library feels like to me. I’m instantly surrounded by this environment of comfortable intellectuality and the company of people all in pursuit of the same goal- to learn something new. It makes me feel wonderful inside. I’ve done some of my best work there, from writing poetry to studying Physics to discovering new music. You can come too and be pleasantly surprised to find your best self here, in the library.

One of the biggest reasons I want to be a child again is so I get to have the luxury of enjoying the summer holidays once again. I remember the holidays after Inter 2nd year, 5 months of pure bliss where I did nothing but play video games and compete in eSports tournaments where I won actual money, but that's a story for another time.

The overwhelming sense of freedom during the usual Summer Holidays can be difficult to handle sometimes. We become used to the routine, to the point that we cannot sit idle and while away time, that is of course, if you aren't me. I can sit still for hours doing nothing and it'll still be fun.

Jokes apart, here's a list of things you can do over the summer vacations

1. Take up shooting lessons

While taking out aggression in video games shooting bad guys is fun, learning how to shoot in real life will not only teach you how to aim and shoot, but also instil the discipline required to shoot a gun. The patience, the way the shooter breathes, the concentration, it's a great way to spend your time. There are multiple shooting ranges around the city which you can check out and sign up for lessons. Of course, it isn't easy, but nothing that's worth the time is easy.

2. Go on a vacation. Solo.

Travel solo, and don't travel for the sake of travelling. Travel to see new places, experience local cuisine, breathe new smells, see wonderful sights. Go where people don't usually go, like the North Eastern parts of our country, an entire region filled with breathtaking sights and friendly people.

So go ahead, put some kilometres on your soul.

3. Volunteer

Use your time to volunteer with the various NGOs across your city, doing your bit for the society and meeting like minded people. Together, you can change the society around you, so why wait?

4. Read a tonne of books

Perhaps one of the best things I did over my summer holidays back in the day was to spend whatever time I wasn't gaming on reading books. I devoured books, I adored the letters dancing on the paper and coming to life in my head. I went from J.K. Rowling to George RR Martin, Neil Gaiman, Andrzej Sapkowski, Cormac McCarthy, and the evergreen R.K. Narayan. All of this, and not even the tip of the iceberg.

It pays to be well read, knowledge is power and reading books opens your mind, and what better time to do so? Make the local library your second home, and start reading!

5. Learn how to play the drums

Take inspiration from Whiplash and start learning how to play the drums, because there are too many guitarists and too few drummers in the world, and nothing can beat the sheer joy of producing pulse pounding beats on the drum kit.

Besides, every person should take the initiative to learn at least one musical instrument. It's just one of those things which everyone must do.

We caught up with the Founder of IndianRaga Sriram Emani, to talk about his initiative, the IndianRaga Fellowship and the first ever Fellowship Program to be held here in India.

"Back in college, I was taking a class where the professor encouraged us to come up with a business plan. That was when I first charted plans for the initiative, and the rest is history," says Sriram.

Although initially, the program was only for the United States of America, Sriram talks about a large number of applications they started receiving from India, "Keep in mind that the application fee was over a hundred dollars, and yet we had applications pouring in from India. I contacted them and said, look, are you sure you want to apply, then bear the expenses of a flight ticket just for the fellowship? They said yes, and I was quite surprised," he laughs, "It was after that we decided to expand our operations to India as well, and here we are."
