Writing poetry Makes me sultry

As any PC Gamer who spends too much time on Steam will tell you, browsing the upcoming games list on the platform is a mixture of hilarious laughter and genuine admiration at the sheer will and dedication of the teams that put their life and soul into their projects.

So when Alter Army, a game reminiscent of smash Indie hits like Risk of Rain and Hollow Knight was brought to my attention, I was fascinated by the fact that not only was this a game that looked like it could take on the games that had become community darlings post-release but that it was being developed in India, by two teenagers from Jaipur.

I spoke to Mridul Bansal, the 15-year old Game Designer and Head of Marketing for Alter Army, here's how the interview went down!

"The team is the two of us," says Mridul Bansal, speaking over the phone from Jaipur, "There's Mridul Pancholi, the game programmer, designer and artist and me."

Since the two young developers share the same first name, this article will refer to them by their last names to avoid confusion from hereon.

"We started this as a practice project, something we wanted to make after learning how to make games," says Bansal, speaking about the start of their game development journey, "This was back when I was 13 and Pancholi was 15."

The duo taught themselves how to design video games using freely available tools online and YouTube videos, "We've always wanted to do something because we love gaming and we love Indie games and the ideas that go behind it."

The defining moment, the moment when the two decided to start designing their own games, came when they watched Indie Game: The Movie, "It was really inspiring," says Bansal, "I mean, they were tiny teams that didn't have the deep pockets of developers under big name publishers do. If they could do it, we thought, we could do it too."

Indie Game: The Movie would go on to be nominated and also won multiple awards at film festivals around the world. I highly recommend watching it.

Speaking about the game they're working on, Bansal says, "This began as a practice project, but eventually we realised that we had struck upon something that was really fun to play. We kept adding things to our design, expanding the idea until it became Alter Army."

The universe is dying, proclaims the description of the game, you must fight for the last remaining resources in a fast-paced action platformer. The players are set upon by hundreds of monsters, born in a dying world and desperate to survive and grab the same resources you are and it is up to you to survive the onslaught.

"Our project almost did not get Greenlit," laughs Bansal, "It was right on the nick of time and when I called Pancholi to tell him what had happened, he stayed up all night in excitement."

Indeed, Pancholi writes on their Vague Pixel's - the name of their studio - website that when he received the call from Bansal, he could not sleep again because of an overwhelming sense of victory at hitting their first milestone on a long journey.

"We had initially planned to finish it in one month, but we weren't happy with it at all. Adding to it, taking inputs from the community and then getting Greenlit, it has been a surreal experience so far and the best part is yet to come," says Bansal.

Made using the GameMaker Studio engine which is highly efficient in making 2D games, Bansal sheds light on the design process behind the game, "We knew we did not want to do anything new but make something that would serve as a love letter to the games we took inspiration from," he says, "You can see in our videos and also the playable beta that is currently available that we have stayed true to this."

And they are right, as a lifelong gamer and a fan of Hollow Knight, the influences from games like Risk of Rain and the aforementioned Hollow Knight were clear to see. That is what makes it special.

As we conclude our interview, I ask Bansal where he sees himself and 5 years down the line, "Making more games," he laughs, "I want to keep doing this, give back to the industry for giving us so many fantastic games. We will be planning our next game very soon and this time it will be totally unique."

A friend once asked me why India wasn't able to produce a single video game out of a vast majority of graduate students who are proficient with the aspects of programming according to the paper they collect from the university. There is no single answer to this question but one common theme to all of them: opportunity, circumstances and means. Engineers today graduate in hopes to finding a job that'll allow them to continue the middle-class lifestyle they are used to, high achievers go to high achieving jobs and passion projects such as these are actively discouraged. It is difficult to be creative in a country where creativity is a sin.

That is why it is incredible to see these two young teens come forward with their ideas, after having taught themselves how to make games, and getting Steam to Greenlight their project and tweak their game over the years, from a small project to a full release. Here's hoping they make more games in the coming days.
"}]

The (Ex)3 Mantra is the only mantra I know after the guru-mantra or the Gayatri-mantra. It is the shortest mantra comprising of 3 simple words, but, when put together taught me how to live life.

Yes. Experiment, Explore, Experience.

Well, my name is Manvi Kansal and I chose not to mention my academic qualifications because it wouldn’t be useful to anyone. Neither you nor me. But to understand the kind of person I am, maybe I could take you on a tour of my interests. Travel, journalism, reading, writing, entrepreneurship, philosophy and most importantly- food, entrench the never-ending list of my interests.

Will Roger once said, “Even if you are on the right path, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” And this quote has been an inspiration to me for not pausing in between. My speed has never been zero. The thoughts and ideas of intellectualism, spirituality and the need of staying away from the surrounding delusions are the only reason for me being what I am today.

Steve Jobs once quoted “Stay hungry, stay foolish.” But what does this really mean?

Let’s try and figure out how this could help all of us in our daily lives.

Experiment:- Build the capacity for hunger; we all are active participants in the rat race of being accepted in the society. We all have had weird visions of being a rock star with a guitar and the lights passing through the loose strands of our long, thick, dark hair or visualizing one’s self as Superman and saving the world from the demons or the modern wicked minds. But as we come to our higher secondary school, we are expected to choose either medicine or engineering or chartered accountancy or masters in business administration from abroad because that is what the society has decided for us. But how many of us really enjoy what we do? After the 2nd or 3rd month of the course we chose, we realize that this is clearly not something we’d like to do. Even if there comes a case where we do not know what we want; we remain clear about what we don’t want. That certainly must make life easier than earlier. Is there a way we can solve this problem? Is there a way we don’t have to waste so much time and have a clear head about what we really like to do and what not? The answer is- Experiment. Experiment in different fields; be it photography, design, caricature, acting, singing, dancing, talking, computers, biology, travel, food, writing, reading etc. There are tonnes of options available! Can you imagine being paid to read books or to eat or to travel and click photographs? The world is full of opportunities; you just need the vision of an opportunist. This is precisely what I mean when I say build your hunger.

Explore:- Be foolish and follow your intuition. Once you discover your penchant towards something, i.e., you find the leak and you’re hungry enough to explore in that particular arena. Now is the time to carry yourself on the path of your choosing. Something that you’ve chosen for yourself leaving no chance for the society to choose something for you. Ella Fitzgerald said, “Just don’t give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there are love and inspiration, I don’t think you can go wrong.” When you start believing in yourself, you don’t need someone else to inspire you. Be your own inspiration and the light to your own darkness. I trust you. Now it’s your turn to trust yourself.

Experience:- Knowledge without experience is life without a soul. When you build your appetite for the hunger of knowledge, explore the untouched areas on your growth graph by remaining foolish, you only start living your life as a better person due to the experiences you’ve had.

Why would we be the next Steve Jobs or Sachin Tendulkar or any “Second Someone”? Follow the (Ex)3 mantra and be BE the first of your kind. Yes! That’s your place. The First You.

I’ve started. Have you started your journey to be The First You?

Her happy hair swinging in the air was aware of the spark in her eyes the moment sun hit her tears with his light. Her drifts made the lifeless lonely leaves on the road to dance in the air. She knew she was in love, with the person on her bike right next to her. It was a long, long ride. She wished it lasted forever. I've made no effort in hiding how much I love playing video games, in fact I would go as far to say that my expertise in video games allows me to critique it better than I can critique movies or books. I'm just that good and that is in no way a humble brag, but simply a fact that states my vast and rich experience with playing games for years.

So it was obvious that I was going to come up with a list of games in which you can go on an adventure. The nature of video games is such that you can create your own mini-adventures in games depending on which game you're playing. Some games are so well designed that they allow you to create your own adventure based on environmental clues alone, like the first game on our list.

1. The Witcher III: Wild Hunt

Using open world games is practically cheating when it comes to adventure games simply because of its potential of running off in any direction you want and exploring the map. But the folks at CD Projekt Red put their heart and soul into this project, because one fine day as I was exploring the marshy and poverty stricken lands of Velen, I found a dead body with a torn leg on one of the roads, which led me on a hunt to find if I could find the monster responsible for it nearby. Sure enough, I did, but all of this could have been scripted, right?

It wasn't. A completely random and unscripted event happened, the game was designed well enough to leave clues for me to follow. How cool is that?

2. The Uncharted Series:

Now, I'm a fan of Tomb Raider, so recommending Uncharted over it was difficult for me but I did it anyway because Uncharted plays out more like an action adventure movie than Tomb Raider does and I certainly do not want you all to play the new Tomb Raider without having experienced the old ones (the first two Tomb Raider games are now available on the Play Store as well as the App Store)

Following the adventure of thief/antiques dealer/scoundrel/loveable protagonist Nathan Drake, the Uncharted series has quickly become one of the most popular modern games. It features stellar voice work, great script and a fantastic story, not to mention that it is a blast to play.
