While slaving away at the computer for my internship, the smell of the Mogra flowers bought for the Gods’ idols ushered in memories long forgotten. Memories of a happier and a more carefree time that is now distant, belonging to what feels like an eternity ago or perhaps even of another different lifetime. Distracted from my work and as I decided to take a breather, why not embark on this journey back to the past, I thought to myself. Maybe I would remember anecdotes that have been long buried in the grave wherein memories forgotten are tossed.

The treasured Summer breaks was perhaps the moment all kids would look forward to, after all what more would a child want than not studying and having fun all day. For me, it was when I’d go to visit my grandparents in Kolkata or they would come over to spend some jolly good time. I’d have study sessions with my paternal grandfather studying up poems and completing all the horrors of vacation homework. Morning walks with grandpa, being fed watermelons and mangoes by grandma, watching their TV shows and ending the day with rounds of Snake and Ladders and Ludo were the more common schedules. The occasional eating out or something fancy being cooked up at home added all the more flavour to the day, literally. Going out to play with friends with the setting Sun in the backdrop seemed to only be interrupted by the sporadic fights or calls to return home. That truly seemed to be a golden period for a child, and to remember all the toys and collectibles from all the chips packets which had become a part of our daily life.

However, the most defining part of my life then was that we would go to Kolkata and be able to spend time with both my maternal and paternal grandparents along with meeting up with the never-ending list of relatives and some other cousins. Eating all the mouth-watering preparations by my grandmothers that I’d rarely be able to have otherwise and all the varieties of sweets of all hues, colours and tastes in so many shapes and forms. Yet another part of those times that stand out is being able to truly appreciate the sounds of all the insects buzzing in the nearby fields in Kolkata while dozing away in the afternoon as well as the ice cream trolleys that passed by in evening in Pune.

But all of that soon changed as we shifted to Mumbai and as I started studying in higher grades. Days that were spent playing wholly and appreciating the buzzing of insects or the light breeze among the trees were replaced with whole days of vacation homework followed by drawing and swimming classes along with more hobby classes, as they were then called. Going out with parents for walks and spending time with them became diminished as they grew busier with work. Grandparents coming had become a rarity owing to their deteriorating health. With no more daily playing and no social media or mobiles, these childhood friends and I slowly drifted apart. Over time the open spaces in front of our house from where once I used to watch children play or appreciate the trees’ beauty, became buildings competing for height. Gradually it seems, that the shift from those playful times with no worry in the world was infected and polluted by all the stress of getting good grades, meeting deadlines of projects. A time that we could enjoy daily had become a time that we can only remember now.

As the clock bell rung, I came back to my senses, awake with a tear in the eye, it was already a good 2 hours since I had dozed off. What was that? Perhaps a dream, a memory, my memories? Well, with the dream and memories already fading away once more, I got back to my work.

txt
Hey, as all of you know what time of the year it is if you are soaking in the sun and looking for a breeze outside although it might be for a second or two. Anyways the story is the same for me but with increased fun and less sleep. My special summers started when I was 9 yrs old and I am pretty sure I was just as stupid as others who are of my age. All of my cousins came to my grandmother's for a month where the fun began. The day would begin early because of rising temperatures and the second reason is that we used to make plans the day before. As half a day passes we were tired, clumsy hoping something fun would happen but no as it turned out we napped for a while. The one thing I learned is whatever happened, they always had my back and would always support me at any hard times.I didn't know about others but I always hoped we would be going for a movie as it was the best time pass activity at that time although the movie was lame. When it comes to food the only thing I used to like is pickles and pastries which I still love to date. There were summers when I didn't go to my grandmother's and ended up staying with school friends which turned to be pretty awesome and the reason is I have a best friend (modern-day kids might call them BFF or Bae or something lame) . The only summer I didn't enjoy was when I fell sick and could not do a thing which I felt very bad for.

I grew as years passed by, feeling what was it like then every year wondering if I could just turn back time to the good old days. The feeling which you get with all your cousins around is inexpressible and I used to recall every good moment with my mom and that would make me happy all that day. Like me, all others went their own ways hoping we would meet one day. As all these years passed by one thing did not change; my homework, I hated my self completing those works. After all these years if I really hope for something good to happen during summer, its summer vacation with cousins and their crazy ideas and fun activities. I would definitely advise kids to plan their summers and have fun as I know what happens when time passes by.

I really miss those summers!!

As things are getting modern, so are books. So, I recently came across this new concept and now loving it. I just wanted it to share it with you all.

What are audiobooks?

Audiobooks are the audio version of books. Duh!

We all know that tell us something new.

So, a person will narrate the entire book for you. And this person who does this is generally voice artist and trust me they are pretty good in their jobs.

A simple way of deciding whether a particular thing is good or bad, I like to list out the pros and cons of it. So, let's do it.

PROS:

1. MULTITASKING:

When crunched for time but want to read, then listen to it while doing chores or work that does not require much concentration.

2. REST THE EYES:

When my eyes need a break from screens or focus, this is a great way to unwind and relax.

3. CONVENIENT:

It's easy to store audiobooks on your phone when on the go. Plus it takes no extra space in your bag.

4. GREAT NARRATORS:

Narrators can make a mediocre book even better just by their tone and reading skills.

5. IMPROVE LISTENING:

Improves listening and pronunciation.

6. EAST TO FINISH:

Two audiobooks take the same amount of time as one book does.

CONS:

1. RETENTION:

You can miss out on important details if you are not 100% focused on what you are listening to.

2. REFER TO QUOTES:

I'm sorry, let's forget about this point, not at all possible in audiobooks. It's a tedious task.

3. EXPENSIVE:

It depends on the platform which you are using. Some can be so expensive that you can build your library at the same cost. On the other hand, some are so cheap that you can read 5-10 books at the price of a single book.

4. BAD NARRATORS:

Some narrators have terrible reading skills, voice pitches, tone, either too monotone or too dramatic due to which it becomes difficult to understand.

5 ACCENT:

It might take some time to get adjusted with the narrator's accent and voice.

My opinion:

I discovered this like 6 months back, but this concept sounded ridiculous to me back then. You can't hold the book, or smell it or even feel it, at all. And, I still feel like no one can ever replace physical books.

But last week, I completed 2 books, insane, right? Before I used to complete 2 books in a month and that also depends on the size of the book.

I listen to it while writing assignments, cleaning or organizing stuff, and anything which doesn't require much concentration. And, sometimes during online classes as well. Hahaha!

And now I'm planning to read books instead of watching movies or shows. Like, Game of Thrones sequel but I know its gonna take me forever to complete it.

And, right now during the lockdown you can't even get books so it's better to go for either audiobooks or ebooks. And, trust me audiobooks are way better.

My recommendations:

1. Audible - If you didn't see ads of this on youtube then you are living under a rock.

2. Storytel - Personal favorite! It got some cool features like bookmarks, adjusting speed, sleep timers, and many more.

And because you stay with me till the end, I got a gift for you.

Bonus point:

If you want to try audiobooks for free then there's a website called goldenaudibooks.com Okay, It doesn't have all the titles but you'll find the bestsellers over there and it's free, what else do you even need.

I'll be back with another article. Till then wash your hands, stay inside, and stay safe.

If you like book reviews then let me know, I'll start working on it.
"}]
