Social Media has become a part and parcel of our daily life over the years.

But is it worthy enough to spend some time on this?

Are we mentally affected because of this media ?

Do we face any trust issues?

Such questions would be opinionated here in my article.

txt
rich_1591635429154

Many such related questions were asked and the text responses were analysed. Why is this so?

Well, everything has been globalised and technologically advanced. Earlier they used to receive news about other countries after few days. But now a very quick notification in your phone would bring you such news in less than a minute or so. So it is quite useful in keeping us update with the daily happenings. I agree with this but on the other side of the coin, we find lots of hatred posts, fake news feed, cyber bullying, negative and disappointing information and many such. Is this all desirable? Certainly No. But it is not avoidable once you are active enough in the Social Media.

txt
rich_1591635429155
This negative aspect ( side of the coin ) deteriorates us mentally. For suppose, hatred posts or news feed would depress us. Fake news about sensible matters like health, say would bother us to a very much extent. We become overthinkers and become more health conscious constantly thinking about the cons and spoiling our mood and mind. We are subjected to Cyber bullying and Cyber Frauds at times that leads us to a mental trauma and eventual suicides. We are body shamed , harassed online and discriminated on many grounds too. Excessive usage of Social Media in the nights also reduces our sleep hours. It has been estimated that on an average, a teen spends 4:3 ratio of time spent for Social Media to the sleeping time respectively. This is how it can be correlated with mental health especially in the present day.

Is all this needed?

Can it be avoided?

Well, as we are in the 21st century where everything runs quick enough, we need to stay connected to the world and apart from age-old reliable sources of information like TV, newspapers etc. this is a swift way to be updated about the world’s situations. So rather than avoiding it completely, just try to differentiate between good and bad, correct and incorrect , genuine and fake detailing etc. Strengthen yourselves mentally and stay calm whenever you find any panic causing details over the media. Firstly analyse the truth lying beneath such details and think about its certain consequences and then decide and act upon.

txt
rich_1591635429163

Past Scenario:

There is no question of any debate that cricket is killing other sports in our country. Indians eat, live, sleep, talk and walk cricket. Theoretically we all know that hockey is our national game but in practical vision its cricket maniac all over.

Indians just need an excuse to celebrate. Remember the epic party that followed after we won the 2011 World Cup?Hindu? Muslim? Sikh? Christian? When it comes to Cricket we are all Indians!

I agree that there several TV channels that cover cricket specifically.

Its a common sight that young children are playing perfect cricket with bat and ball in lanes, streets, gardens. But people don’t know how to play other sports or what are the rules for other games? A budding sports kid who is almost as tall as the bat he holds claims that some day he would be like "Kohli". Why not like "Rani Rampal" or “captain Manpreet Singh"?Answer is very simple that they don’t know about these heroes. We cannot play here any blame game because it’s our society who is responsible for this situation.

We do have Sindu, Sumit Nagal and Mahesh Bhupati bringing laurels to the country in the field of tennis; a Vishwanathan Anand in the field of chess. They all play hard to bring pride and glory to our country just as cricketers. It was a time when hockey commentary delivered by commentator Jasdev Singh holds the breath of nations’ listeners. That sensational wave sound has now vanished from radio sets and stadiums. Other games like chess, tennis, and hockey are craving for true status as cricket game.Cricket is not our national game, but it is celebrated as a festival. It has been used as a bridge between two nations. Our country’s politics also get active with these sports. Players of international fame and caliber in other sports are not given the proper media support and attention as well as proper facilities for further development. Media hype and money involvement in cricket game are the main culprits for cricket ruling the roost, to the detriment of other sports in India.Paradoxically our country is still struggling hard to form a good football team. Day by bay Indian football is losing the little charm it had gained. Recently JCT club has decided to disband and fold off its team. It was not very shocking news as even Mahindra United decided to discontinue its football team last year. Same happens with our national game hockey. There was a time when India did win the Hockey World Cup in 1975 and people showed a keen interest in the sport, but not so anymore. The sport has died a natural death from lack of leadership and sponsorship.

Present Scenario:

However we do have quite a few channels which cover other sports as well.

And tournaments like Pro Kabaddi, Pro Wresting, ISL etc have seen huge footfall and have provide financial support to players from these Sports.

It used to dominate but the situation is improving now. In the last 1 decade players from other sports are also getting required attention. Particularly after the 2008 Beijing Olympics sports like Wrestling, Badminton & Boxing etc too have seen a sharp rise in viewership. These sports ares grabbing people's attention these days. And the media should also focus on other games too. I'm sure other games also become highlighted in the coming future.
"}]
So I am back, to talk about the most cliché topic ever, "The Side Effects of Social Media". Cliché but interesting nonetheless. It's surprising how much we do under its influence, both good and bad things. Now influencer reminds me of a paradox, did social media influencers become influencers because they wanted to become influencers as in get the tag of an influencer because it sounds cool or because they actually wanted to influence people? We know ourselves, we do a lot of things just because they look cool to the people out there and something is in trend but not because we like doing it. Not telling that everyone and everything is fake, but yes, most of it is or maybe not. This whole thing is a paradox. Sometimes you get confused between your interests and people's interests. The following quotation could serve as a fitting analogy for that situation: Losing yourself in the process of loving someone.

txt

Heavy, right? Few days ago I was practicing aptitude with a friend, to have moral support and a competition to keep us moving forward with a purpose. It could be called a virtual group study and when we took breaks for even 5 minutes, he'd send me at least one post from Instagram saying 'Hey look! This is funny'. It sure was funny, but what struck to me was the idea of spending a break of 5 minutes with Instagram. It isn't wrong at all, nor is it bad because that's a live proof that social media is providing relaxation and peace to people by making them laugh and sometimes even motivating them. A contrasting example is the time we spend with our friends, I know it's the same old boring story but it breaks my heart (I'm sure it breaks yours too if you don't belong to that circle) when our friends meet and all they focus on is uploading an interesting story or making a Tik Tok video. But that also ends up becoming the moment of the day many a times.

txt

All in all, social media makes us do stuff. Sometimes great ones, sometimes bringing in negative thoughts and influence. We start feeling worthless looking at others and suddenly think 'I can do this too!' and start off on a new road. We sometimes lose control and sometimes learn to be patient because of the addiction. We sometimes get close to the people we never expected to ever talk to and sometimes break bonds that existed since years. It all happens there, in that world, just like ours. Like every other thing, social media has two sides to it too, trick is to look for the brighter one ;). See ya soon!

txt
Jack comes from a middle class family . Though he understands his family conditions sometimes he becomes stubborn . The family's income is just enough to meet the basic requirements . Twitter, Instagram, Facebook. Snapchat and whatnots are there that we use to declare ourselves connected to the Social World. This serves a purpose to connect us with people, while at the same time, it also serves as a façade to hide our feeling and portray a pseudo image of ours to the outside world.

People, at times, use this presence as an alternative to the real world. In 2016, nearly 44.7 million adults(18+ Age group) in the US had a mental illness. The age bracket of 18-25 had the highest presence of any mental illness at 22.1% when compared to the age bracket of 26-49 at 21.1% and age bracket of 50+ at 14.5%.

A term is known as “Facebook depression” arises from children’s excessive use of social media. A report by the AAP(American Academy of Pediatrics) defines it as “depression that develops when teenagers and preteenagers spend too much time on social media sites and then showcase classic symptoms of depression due to the pressure of the online world.” This something not only limited to Facebook but extending to all the Social Media channels, the individuals are opting.

The factors contributing to depression include the different measures of popularity that Facebook generates within the individual. In particular, social media channels can make kids feel inadequate when seen in stark contrast to their friend tallies, status updates, and the pictures of others having a good time, what the individual experiences on the Social media is only one way of the reality. The photos and videos shared don’t portray what the reality is, it just uncovers only one face of the Moon, while the rest lingers in an unseen reality. With this fugitive image, the others develop a full-fledged reality amongst themselves, which in turn creates pressure to outshine with respect to others, which failing to attain, moves the person to anger, followed by abnormal behavior.

So, If you’re spending way too much time on social media, this is imbibing feelings of sadness, frustration, or loneliness, to your life, it may be time to re-evaluate your online habits and find a new balance.

It is a normal Saturday. You wake up, get ready and sit down to have brunch. Your mom serves you some rice and some dal. You pull out your phone from your pocket and scroll through Instagram. There you see someone eating lasagna at the back waters of Maldives, you envy them. You go up to your room and decide to study. Just one last check of Whatsapp and you see that your cousins have decided to bake cookies, you make a mental note to bake some later for yourself. Anyway, you put your phone down and study for a while and decide to take a break on Netflix and peek through Facebook as your show buffers. You notice your friends Gym selfie and productivity check list, you wonder when the last time you released some endorphins. Your favorite character dies in the show, you’re so heartbroken. Puppy videos and memes on Pinterest salvage your mood. This flow of ups and downs keeps lingering. Your boredom turns into activity, your contentment into resentment, your distress into hope. You are exposed to so much content that it is bound to influence you. These influences can be both positive and negative.

Well let us start with the bright side. Social media allows us to stay in touch with our friends and family, a commodity which was non-existent a decade ago. It also allows individuals to be part of communities and causes that they place confidence in. They get to be a part of like-minded groups from all over the world which unifies us globally. They get to promote important issues and state their opinions on them. Social media is a great outlet for art and creativity. Nowadays, there is a Picasso in every street and a Shakespeare in every house. All art forms have a platform for exhibition. Through social media one stumbles upon in-numerous workshops, webinars and podcasts which only help them perfect existing skills or imbibe new ones.

On the contrary, Social media has given birth to a new world’s disease known as FOMO. FOMO or ‘Fear of Missing Out’ is a new dilemma that we as a society face. Constant comparison of our lives with the theatrics of the one’s we see online leads to the feeling of us living an inadequate life. One in four people suffer from anxiety and depression. Anxiety is the feeling of magnified worry and depression the state of goal-lessness. This pressure of posting a perfect selfie and adhering to a certain lifestyle to be accepted causes agony, such pain that goes unnoticed because of its prevalent nature. Many individuals use social media as a fuel for approval and derive their self-worth from the likes and comments they receive. These false methods of validation are of course hazardous. How can one truly be happy if their self-value is left at the hands of their friends, acquaintances or anyone other than themselves really? Social media is also used as a camouflage, sad people portray as though they are happy. It is almost as though they pretend to feel something else as a coping mechanism for their true feelings. This will eventually either lead to a melt down or cause worse complications. Cyber-bullying is another menace that is becoming rampant as we make advancements in technology.

Some symptoms to watch out for, to keep ourselves in check; to identify if we are falling into the hell hole of Social media include-- if we spend more time on these platforms than with our real friends and family, If we constantly compare ourselves unfavorably with those on social media or experience cyber bullying. It is important for us to notice this. If we suddenly have no time for self-reflection or if we rely on likes for self love then we are target to the negative influence of social media. If we turn nocturnal and find it hard to sleep and observe increasing symptoms of anxiety or depression we must make changes and reach out to seek help.

Therefore, my conclusion is YES! Social media and mental health do have a very direct relation. It is a beautiful paradox that represents how we have brought far ones close and shoved the close ones far. One must keep in mind that Social media isn’t real. It’s a collection, a memoir of people’s happiest memories. It’s a fabricated representational view into someone’s life. You only see what they show you. It is as though you are a horse with blinkers, examining someone else’s existence. It’s best to use social media for connectivity and growth and even entertainment. Once you start to suffocate due to its drawbacks; breathe a little, take a break from it and do what is best for you. Don’t succumb to this ruthless cycle of comparison and self-loathing. Tell yourself—you matter, you don’t have to be the same as those you see, you are born an original. We are all intricately unique.
"}]
