Not all books have the power to leave a lasting effect on their readers, and without any sort of bias, I can safely say that this one by Jean Sasson has cast a spell on me irrespective of the number of times I re-read it.This grippingly horrific tale takes us on a roller coaster ride of emotions throughout. It narrates the life of Princess Sultana, a direct descendant of the founder of the current Saudi monarchy, who apparently shared her ordeals with Sasson under an oath of secrecy. Her identity cannot be revealed and the reader will understand why, soon enough.

The gulf countries, especially the lives of the royal family are closely guarded. The amount of secrecy maintained in the matters of its women needs no mention. The world is enthralled by their lifestyle- what with unimaginable standards of wealth and grandeur. Yet, the women are caged, albeit in a gilded one.

The lines –

"The history of our women is buried behind the black veil of secrecy. Neither our births nor deaths are made official in any public record. The common emotion expressed at the birth of a female is either sorrow or shame."

leave a lasting impression in our minds since we too can somewhat identify with this emotion. The author intertwines the lives of the supporting characters so seamlessly that every line gives goose bumps. Behind the black veils, lie diverse characters, spirits and stories that are brought to life by the main protagonist. The gut wrenching narrative makes us question the term 'father', 'brother', 'husband' and the likes.

Princess sultana and the other women’s heart wrenching experiences and their rebellion makes us cry and cheer at the same time. While this is a must-read for people with an interest in nonfiction and life stories, I would strongly recommend it to everyone. It stirs the soul so much that one cannot help but be moved by the stories of these women.

If you've grown up with your eyes up at the sky at night looking at the stars and the moon and wondering what's out there, you've heard of Buzz Aldrin. Him, along with Commander Neil Armstrong, became the first humans on the moon on July 20, 1969, in Armstrong's words, "That's one small step for man, a giant leap for mankind."

Buzz Aldrin was the second man to walk on the moon, and the man has had a very decorated career that every space headed youngster that grew up looking at the skies should know. Born on January 20th, 1930, here are the things you need to know about Buzz Aldrin

1. Buzz Aldrin had his name legally changed

Buzz Aldrin was born Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr, but the nickname Buzz originated from his sister Fay Ann having difficulty calling him 'brother' as a child, and ended up calling him Buzzer. The name stuck, and during the Apollo 11 mission, he was Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin, before legally changing his name to Buzz Aldrin in 1988. Another interesting fact is that his mother's name was Marion Moon before marriage to Edwin Eugene Aldrin Sr. Coincidence or destiny, you decide.

2. He graduated as a Mechanical Engineer before his military career

Aldrin was a brilliant student, finishing third in his class and graduating Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and served as a jet fighter pilot during the Korean War, flying 68 missions and taking down Russian MiGs.

Before the universally iconic Apollo 11 mission which put mankind on the moon, Buzz Aldrin was part of the final Gemini mission, Gemini 12. He set a record, which has been broken several times over since then, of becoming the first human to prove that Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) can be carried out for longer than previously believed, which is to say, Buzz Aldrin tied himself to a rope, flew out of the spacecraft and carried out repairs like it was just another day in the sun, with no fear whatsoever.

It's that time of the year when people start bugging that one friend who is good at writing to help them out with their Statement of Purpose (SOP). It's time to change it and it's time to write it by yourself. Here's a quick cheat-sheet that'll ensure your SOP stands out and increases your chances of getting into your dream university for your Masters.

txt
rich_1484811689857

1. Content:

SOP is often misunderstood, and many of them choose to write an essay about themselves but the primary purpose of the SOP is why does one want to join that particular University, what the admission committee would be looking for is some extra information about you which probably your grades and scores cannot convey. One simple rule that you need to remember is your essay cannot be generic, for them to remember yours out of hundreds of application, you have to present your story in the best possible way, if you can present it through a story it would be more appealing, remember do not use statements and make it monotonous.

txt
rich_1484817041113

2. Be Specific:

Make sure you answer basic questions like why you have chosen that particular country, university or course, your experience in that particular field, any other interests, hobbies or passions that you find are relevant to establish a career in the concerned field. Also what you think of the student communities or the culture.

txt
rich_1484818921087

3.Use A Formal But Conversational Tone:

Many of them think it would be appropriate to use a serious tone in the essay and few opt for a friendly or a funny tone to write. Neither of the approach is ideal for a SOP. Use slightly formal language, but with a tinge of fun and uniqueness.

txt
rich_1484819812497

4. Customize Your Essay:

The most common mistake everyone does is if they apply to more than one university, they have a common draft to which they make minor changes and submit. What one fails to realize is that in an attempt to generalize it, it loses its purpose. It should definitely include their cultures, methodologies, visions, values, motto, strengths, weaknesses that differ from university to university. Apart from university rankings and other similar materialistic qualities these things make the essay better. If a culture doesn’t attract you much, then there’s no point in wasting an application.

txt
rich_1484821101314

5. Be Yourself:

It would be a very bad idea to create stories just because you have a normal background and no outstanding achievements, rather it would be better to write normal stories because it is not in your best interest to pretend to be someone you are not; the admission officers are expert psychologists, and they can spot a true applicant from a false applicant with just one reading.

txt
rich_1484821704927

6. Address Your Problems:

By talking and discussing your problems in a matured way you make your SOP impactful. This is the best way you can explain any academic gaps or any other problems that you genuinely faced; instead of trying to defend yourself, you can point out the actual reasons that led to the problems, but more importantly, you should highlight how you overcame the situation, and what you have learnt from the experience.

txt
rich_1484822612186

7. Take Advice From Professors:

Don't hesitate to take assistance from any professors or experienced people, they are technically sound and can also provide you valuable insights on how to project your technical expertise and project works in the statement.

txt
rich_1484822991424

8. Do Your Homework:

To find out what is generic and most commonly used you need to do a little homework and also find out in what ways you can make your SOP stand out. Before you write the essays, you should be thorough with the details of all the universities you are applying to, and list down all the things you like about each university.

txt
rich_1484823838482

9. Organised:

Make sure your content is organised in a proper way. Introduce yourself in a unique manner, story about your background or experience in the field you’ve chosen and your academic background. Co-curricular and extracurricular activities in the field of your interest and other professional accomplishments followed by explanations about problems and why you have chosen the specific grad school and other related questions. Mention what you like about the university which is most important.

txt
rich_1484823330653

10. Edit And Re-edit It:

Do not keep your essays with you, it would need a expert advise. It is important to find critics for your content so that the final output would make you stand out from the rest. So keep editing and reviewing so that you make it better and interesting.
"}]

No one is born without a reason. Ignorance towards one's true self is something we all have lived for a long time. Every person has a point of time in life when we feel that all our ways are blocked, we feel as if we are left in the middle of a dense forest from where we cannot find our way back. It’s simply that we are lost, lost in thoughts. We feel our existence fading away. We start losing ourselves and this kills our identity. But that doesn't mean it has to be the end of your identity!

We just cannot give up on our self. We have to overcome all this and begin to find our self. Finding yourself means finding your purpose in life, it means digging into your past, refreshing all your memories that have made you what you are today, it means finding what your beliefs are and live by them. In such similar situations, my journey began.

This journey led me through different pathways of life, but this was not always on an easy road. It showed me happiness, satisfaction, fulfillment and may be enlightenment. It also showed me the fear of losing something important in life, misunderstanding, anger, sadness and what not. That time, I had to take some really tough decisions and stick hard onto them. All this while, there were people who only used to take from me because I allowed them to. Then I decided that I’ll cut such people off my life and begin to change the course of my life, I started to search for the purpose of my life and I’m trying to chase my passion.

What I know for sure is that the journey is worth taking, I am slowly becoming calmer, more aware and more tolerant, I am learning how to pay attention to my feelings and understand myself better, I have been very hard on myself for most of my life, I have not been truthful with myself and have had unrealistic expectations therefore, setting myself up for disappointment. Why do we do this? Why do we lie to ourselves? More importantly, why do we allow ourselves to get away with it?

Being true to my feelings and acknowledging them has released so much fear from me. It has released my fear of not living up to the expectations I set for myself, that is not to say that these fears no longer exist within me because they certainly do and, I don’t think they will ever go away but now that I am aware of my true feelings and now that I am becoming conscious of my real beliefs, they no longer have a tight hold on my life. Instead, I have a hold on how they can or cannot affect me.

So I’d just like to end up telling,

Be bold enough to live life on your terms, and never, ever apologize for it. Go against the grain, refuse to conform, take the road less traveled instead of the well-beaten path. Laugh in the face of adversity, and leap before you look. Dance as though EVERYBODY is watching. March to the beat of your own drummer. And stubbornly refuse to fit in.
