Introduced in 1991, the Bharat Stage norms, or BS norms, were regulations on the emissions of vehicles, to keep it in check after the rapid increase in pollution since in just the last 100 years. Taking the Euro emission regulations as base, our own BS regulations were rolled out and since then, undergone changes eventually over the years.

The current regulations, BS-III, was introduced in 2005-6, based on Euro-III regulations of 2000-05, and wasn't implemented until 2010. Meanwhile, EU and the rest of the western world moved to Euro 4 and then 5, with stricter emission regulations than before, while us, with our humongous population and a Prime Minster that is serious about fighting global warming, were stuck with outdated technology to check pollution at the source. Now that the Supreme Court has banned the sale of BS-III vehicles from April 1st, 2017, it obviously has not gone down well with auto manufacturers who will now face huge losses because the current stock is only BS-III vehicles

So this article right here has everything you need to know about the issue, and why you should care about this, in interest of leaving this planet intact for the future generations.

Lets start with question 1:

What is BS-IV?

BS-IV are the new emission standards set by the Government of India, that affects not just motor vehicles, anything that has an internal combustion engine that may cause heavy pollution. The government has a clear cut plan of implementing the Bharat Stage regulations, starting from 1991, and reaching BS-VI by 2020.

Should I feel sorry for the auto manufacturers?

Absolutely not. In fact, auto manufacturers knew that BS-III was being phased out after April 1st, 2017, but almost none of them planned on manufacturing BS-IV vehicles because it would cut their profits. They decided their pockets were more important than the environment, so no, you do not feel sorry for them. However, we must appreciate companies that had already started to manufacture BS-IV vehicles. The current inventory of unsold BS-III vehicles in the market is 8.2 lakh units, with an estimated price of Rs. 12000 crore.

What does this mean for the vehicles I already own?

Don't worry, your vehicles are still good to be used, just make sure you get regular pollution checks done. If you happened to be attracted by the fantastic discounts on vehicles from showrooms trying to get rid of their BS-III stock, worry not, you can still register them after April 1, but make sure you register it within two months otherwise your vehicle will be illegal to use.

If BS-III was supposed to be phased out anyway, why did Supreme Court ban it?

To ensure the sale of BS-III vehicles are stopped with immediate effect. The Supreme Court has taken this decision with the health of the people of this country in mind and has been, rightly, praised for the decision. People's health should not be at the mercy of for profit companies.

Why should I care?

Because we owe it to our children a clean and safe Earth for them to grow and start families in. Now, of course, starting families and having children is not the ultimate goal in life, but why would you want to pollute the only home known to humans? It's the end of March and the temperatures are hitting 40 degrees in Hyderabad, something that would have been unthinkable just a few short years ago. This isn't even about countries, one country's mistake can be another country's heatwave.

This year is going to be especially hot for India, there is already a drought in Tamil Nadu, and amidst this, the so called 'leader' of the free world, Donald Trump does not believe in climate change. The Paris Accords are at the risk of being broken, but we Indians can be proud of the fact that our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi is taking climate change seriously enough to promote solar energy and green energy options, and has ratified the Paris Climate Accords.

The future is bleak, but it doesn't have to be that way. In the world of the Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, "There are two doors. Behind Door Number One is a completely sealed room, with a regular, gasoline-fueled car. Behind Door Number Two is an identical, completely sealed room, with an electric car. Both engines are running full blast.I want you to pick a door to open, and enter the room and shut the door behind you. You have to stay in the room you choose for one hour. You cannot turn off the engine. You do not get a gas mask.I'm guessing you chose the Door Number Two, with the electric car, right? Door number one is a fatal choice - who would ever want to breathe those fumes? This is the choice the world is making right now."

Law of attraction! I'm not talking about the attraction you have with someone or something. Basically law of attraction dictates that whatever can be imagined and held in the mind's eye is achievable if you take action on a plan to get to where you want to be.

Now this would totally depend on how a person thinks and sees the world. Everyone has a different perspective or view or opinions about different matters or things and it may often not tally with the other person's thinking or opinion. For example we have a beautiful painting of the night with stars and people gazing up to it and the sky has been painted with different shades to give it to the perfect look. Now for a person who is always positive will love that painting and be amazed at how it was done and would be fascinated by it.On the other hand for a person who thinks negatively will dislike the painting and would wonder how could one paint such a thing, he would find it boring and is disinterested in it. This depends on how our mind wants to think or how we want it to think.

For a person who is always optimistic even if something wrong or bad happens he would try to make the best of the situation and learn from it and try to make sure it doesn't happen again. For person who is a pessimist would take things negatively irrespective of whether the situation is good or bad he would never try to rectify it and would always be under the presumption that things are going to bad . It all depends on how we think we have the ability to make hell into heaven and also we have the ability to make heaven into hell. It all depends on how we understand and see things, it depends on our perspective. Nobody is responsible for the way things happen or how we understand the situation. If we want something to change it will if we don't want it, it wont change. You could be the one who can start something new and to bring a change or you could be the one who could stop everything and do nothing. At the end of the day the choice is ours alone.

Casual racism is something I have been guilty of as well. During my rebellious teenager years, listening to gangsta rap made me think saying the N-word was cool and hip, it wasn't until years later that I realised the history behind the word and how wrong I was.

But casual racism is much more subtle that it appears, it's making jokes at the expense of the centuries of hate and oppression experienced by African people across the world, it's being surprised that the places they come from is not filled with only savages (I'll come back to this, this is important), it's intentionally avoiding them in the streets, it's pointing to them as examples of monsters and kidnappers. Keeping this in mind, does it really surprise you that the African students beaten up in Delhi recently were accused of cannibalism and then when the boy they alleged was eaten came back and died of a drug overdose, the same people were accused of selling drugs to the boy?

When you point towards a dark skinned person, and not just an African person, and tell your children to be afraid of them because they look different from the people the child sees regularly, you are telling him it is okay to be afraid of people just because of the colour of their skin. People fear the unknown, and the child who feared the black man yesterday will grow up to be hateful of the same tomorrow, ensuring their hatred is only skin deep.

Of course, this doesn't mean that all Indians are racists, but that enough Indians are okay with casual racism, myself included, I cannot claim a moral high ground here, because even I was guilty of it once, but I acknowledge my wrongdoing's now, and I can only tell people that it is not okay. Neither Africans, nor Indians, operate via a hive mind where everyone is the same, humans are more complex, and Africans know that not all Indians are racist, so can we Indians acknowledge that not all Africans are drug dealing cannibals?

Africans come here seeking a better life away from their countries because of various reasons, including but not limited to lack of safety in their own home countries. Us Indians too leave for greener pastures overseas, where we too are met with racism, which we thoroughly condemn, the whole media shebang of decrying racism in America which of course we forget in a few days and go back to being casually racist because who tells us that it is wrong? My parents don't even know the concept of casual racism, my friends acknowledge racism but don't take it seriously enough to be an issue, and can I really blame them? The most I can do is tell them that it is wrong.

So the question I have is, what moral high ground can us Indians claim to have while condemning racist attacks on Indians overseas while we turn a blind eye to racism right here at home? Nobody can stay motivated forever, there will eventually come a time where you will burn out and need a hand up, but then you can't always depend on people either. In the end, nobody but you will be able to look after yourself, so why not do that properly and become a legend?

Jokes apart, there are certain habits and hobbies you can inculcate into your daily routine as students that will go on to help you become a successful person in the future when you are working.

1. Never stop learning

Of course, investing your time into learning new things isn't always viable, but that doesn't mean you restrict yourself from learning something occasionally. As a student, this helps you understand your subjects or something new you want to learn better, but this habit carrying over to your professional life can help you solve work place issues with ease. If you turn out to be a startup founder, learning new things can mean better functioning of your company, which is always a good thing.

2. Be an early bird

As tempting as that night out with friends and driving around town might sound, it is not worth going late to your college. Once in a while is, obviously, okay, but as long as you develop a habit of being an early bird, it will help you a lot in the long run. It goes without saying that coming late to work will not fly with the management, so why never develop a habit of being early and go on time, so you may leave before time as well since you finished whatever you wanted to do for the day. Besides, there have been studies that prove that early risers are happier than the rest, so why would you deny yourself happiness?

3. Learn to cook

I cannot put enough emphasis on this, no matter who you are, no matter how bad you think you are in the kitchen, no matter what you think of preset gender views that only women should be in the kitchen, pull up your socks and learn how to cook. Not only is the gender view wrong, cooking can save your lives both as a student and when you're a working professional. You can't always depend on mom's delicious cooking and have to learn a way to fend for yourself. What if you are sent away from home for your job? Instead of burning a hole in your pocket, learn how to cook instead.

This is easily one of the most important skills a human being can learn.

4. Work smarter, not harder

There is a time and place for hard work, but it isn't always useful. No matter how much you try, you can't brute force a few problems in your student life or professional life, there is just no way. In such cases, you need to work smarter instead of harder. Besides, working harder might not always yield results and make you feel horrible for all the hard work you put in. With smart work, you go on anticipating and preparing for all conditions and that will help you in both student and professional lives. Managing a crisis will always boost you in the eyes of the management.

5. Learn to have fun, responsibly.

No matter how much of a studious student you are, if you don't let yourself get loose once in a while it is going to affect your performance. We've all heard of the idiom 'all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy' (especially if you've watch or read The Shining), and that saying didn't plop out of the sky, it is centuries worth of wisdom in one single line.

So let go, have fun, spend your weekends having a blast, loose control but don't go overboard. You are still a responsible person, and you must always remember that. How does this factor in both student and professional life like the rest of the points, I hear you ask? Well ,what better place to learn how to party than college, right?
