I lived for two years in New Delhi, South Delhi to be exact, which might be, depending on whom you ask, the more liberal part of town. The aggression that lies just beneath the surface is universal to New Delhi, but it was much better than anywhere else in Delhi I had lived.

As a dark skinned, overweight person, I've lost count of how many times I've been pointed at and shown as an example to kids of someone who'll kidnap them to eat them, or the number of people who simply cannot comprehend that there are cities apart from Madras in South India. I wasn't always the case, of course, but it was enough to be a problem.

So if I, a dark skinned Indian who happens to be from the South, is given the stink-eye, can you imagine what Africans go through? Think about that for a moment.

Casual racism is something I have been guilty of as well. During my rebellious teenager years, listening to gangsta rap made me think saying the N-word was cool and hip, it wasn't until years later that I realised the history behind the word and how wrong I was.

But casual racism is much more subtle that it appears, it's making jokes at the expense of the centuries of hate and oppression experienced by African people across the world, it's being surprised that the places they come from is not filled with only savages (I'll come back to this, this is important), it's intentionally avoiding them in the streets, it's pointing to them as examples of monsters and kidnappers. Keeping this in mind, does it really surprise you that the African students beaten up in Delhi recently were accused of cannibalism and then when the boy they alleged was eaten came back and died of a drug overdose, the same people were accused of selling drugs to the boy?

When you point towards a dark skinned person, and not just an African person, and tell your children to be afraid of them because they look different from the people the child sees regularly, you are telling him it is okay to be afraid of people just because of the colour of their skin. People fear the unknown, and the child who feared the black man yesterday will grow up to be hateful of the same tomorrow, ensuring their hatred is only skin deep.

Of course, this doesn't mean that all Indians are racists, but that enough Indians are okay with casual racism, myself included, I cannot claim a moral high ground here, because even I was guilty of it once, but I acknowledge my wrongdoing's now, and I can only tell people that it is not okay. Neither Africans, nor Indians, operate via a hive mind where everyone is the same, humans are more complex, and Africans know that not all Indians are racist, so can we Indians acknowledge that not all Africans are drug dealing cannibals?

Africans come here seeking a better life away from their countries because of various reasons, including but not limited to lack of safety in their own home countries. Us Indians too leave for greener pastures overseas, where we too are met with racism, which we thoroughly condemn, the whole media shebang of decrying racism in America which of course we forget in a few days and go back to being casually racist because who tells us that it is wrong? My parents don't even know the concept of casual racism, my friends acknowledge racism but don't take it seriously enough to be an issue, and can I really blame them? The most I can do is tell them that it is wrong.

So the question I have is, what moral high ground can us Indians claim to have while condemning racist attacks on Indians overseas while we turn a blind eye to racism right here at home? Of course, I'll write about the why or how in a separate blog post, because the reasons we are so racist needs to be examined in detail, but until then, really think about this: Why is it okay to condemn racism against Indians but ignore the same against Africans?
"}]

Nobody can stay motivated forever, there will eventually come a time where you will burn out and need a hand up, but then you can't always depend on people either. In the end, nobody but you will be able to look after yourself, so why not do that properly and become a legend?

Jokes apart, there are certain habits and hobbies you can inculcate into your daily routine as students that will go on to help you become a successful person in the future when you are working.

1. Never stop learning

Of course, investing your time into learning new things isn't always viable, but that doesn't mean you restrict yourself from learning something occasionally. As a student, this helps you understand your subjects or something new you want to learn better, but this habit carrying over to your professional life can help you solve work place issues with ease. If you turn out to be a startup founder, learning new things can mean better functioning of your company, which is always a good thing.

2. Be an early bird

As tempting as that night out with friends and driving around town might sound, it is not worth going late to your college. Once in a while is, obviously, okay, but as long as you develop a habit of being an early bird, it will help you a lot in the long run. It goes without saying that coming late to work will not fly with the management, so why never develop a habit of being early and go on time, so you may leave before time as well since you finished whatever you wanted to do for the day. Besides, there have been studies that prove that early risers are happier than the rest, so why would you deny yourself happiness?

3. Learn to cook

I cannot put enough emphasis on this, no matter who you are, no matter how bad you think you are in the kitchen, no matter what you think of preset gender views that only women should be in the kitchen, pull up your socks and learn how to cook. Not only is the gender view wrong, cooking can save your lives both as a student and when you're a working professional. You can't always depend on mom's delicious cooking and have to learn a way to fend for yourself. What if you are sent away from home for your job? Instead of burning a hole in your pocket, learn how to cook instead.

This is easily one of the most important skills a human being can learn.

4. Work smarter, not harder

There is a time and place for hard work, but it isn't always useful. No matter how much you try, you can't brute force a few problems in your student life or professional life, there is just no way. In such cases, you need to work smarter instead of harder. Besides, working harder might not always yield results and make you feel horrible for all the hard work you put in. With smart work, you go on anticipating and preparing for all conditions and that will help you in both student and professional lives. Managing a crisis will always boost you in the eyes of the management.

5. Learn to have fun, responsibly.

No matter how much of a studious student you are, if you don't let yourself get loose once in a while it is going to affect your performance. We've all heard of the idiom 'all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy' (especially if you've watch or read The Shining), and that saying didn't plop out of the sky, it is centuries worth of wisdom in one single line.

So let go, have fun, spend your weekends having a blast, loose control but don't go overboard. You are still a responsible person, and you must always remember that. How does this factor in both student and professional life like the rest of the points, I hear you ask? Well ,what better place to learn how to party than college, right?

The sun was raining heat above our heads, slurping all our energy. Everyone’s face was deformed into a low battery caution. Wet hankies, empty water bottles, pungent body orders were all just consequences. There started the beetle buzz, the strange sound produced by insects which is an early sign of a cold night or a hot noon. Amidst of all this I could clearly hear the sound of those cycle bells and hovering school kids. I was frustrated or truly admitting to be jealous of those kids running across the streets desperately to reach their home sweet home to shade them from the sun.

Watching all this from my the hot muddy broken glass of my class window made me curse my life. Those broken glasses reflected many things. My broken smile, my crashing dreams and fortunately my shattered life. Back at school summer was the season that fascinated me the most. Long holiday trips, delicious mangoes were few among the reasons. Those long awaited afternoon tea parties live as my favorites. This season bought me closer to nature, the watersheds we built in those green farm fields were all small signs of my happiness. Those were the days when were the SUMMER STARS.
"}]
When we peek through the shambles of embarrassment we know we have all been there. In the space where the storm of the exams are in full blast and yet, the only thing our mind allows us to do is rest, or be restless. There is no motivation for study, no way for getting back into the syllabus, up until the very last moment when you can get around to actually doing something. However, this is not done very easily at the end of the day. There is a lot of things that go on at that very moment, things that need our attention. Mostly, I believe the principles that work here, in our complete rejection of society, because of feeling defeated by its continuing rule in our lives.

Now, this is a continuing problem in our lives, we need to re-examine the principles that guides us to procrastination to actually defeat it. For me, it comes coupled with anxiety. In terms of alertness, there is a fear of trying out new things, opening books, represented by the fatigue we get whenever I these things. There are problems associated with this. I have suffered in exams when I had everything right there in my mind because at the end of the day I was not confident enough, because I had whiled away the earlier night in sleeping or in watching movies. This is a problem that plagued me right up until my Boards and the Entrance Exams.

In college this routine was changed, I took an interest in what I was studying, so even when I felt defeated by the subject, I knew that there were fragments that I could make up and use for my benefit. And that much was something I could count on at the end, till the exam day. Heck, I even began to understand seemingly incomprehensible subjects when I approached it with an open mind and with interest. Both of these things seemed to work out a space out of social defeat. The anxiety and stress did not go away however, there was a continuing presence of the fact that I might do badly. But, there was also a presence of the comfort level I had with each subject with that. This increased the total idea that I had about each of those examinations. There is a need for understanding of the whole thing in proper context and getting the problems in proper space.

We try and reconcile our problems into questions we can ask ourselves, questions that serve a proper meaning. In the entire conversation, we need to have the upper-hand, specially when the other side is a subject which seems impenetrable. The interest is key here, when you are interested in something you automatically become more open to the vast possibilities in the entire project. And slowly, it must evolve to become something greater. So, do not fall into the entire pattern of social defeat, and when you do, try to gain interest before you gain knowledge. So, that you can retain more memory.
"}]
On the 22nd of March, a hot sunny afternoon, I and a few others had the privilege of attending a writers workshop conducted by Siddharth, content strategist and a chief editor of Stumagz at their Head Quarters. We were made to understand the importance of articulation of words in the right manner so that it leaves no space for ambiguity.

Despite having much fewer participants than expected, the speaker was just as interested in helping us understand the skill of creating content that people would wish to read.

It was a very insightful session which involved the speaker sharing his personal real life experience as a journalist for few of the best publications of India. We talked about the right articulation, importance of punctuation, the importance of reading. The once piece of advice that was stressed upon time and again was the fact that to be a good writer, one should first be a good reader. The speaker went on to explain how reading actually helps us in improving our writing skills. Then came the topic of relevancy, and how it affects the readership on a larger scale.

Suggestions were given to improve our articles or stories in a way that would attract the users into reading our stories using clickbait titles. Bait is something that's used while fishing so as to attract the fish and get fixed to the fishing hook, in a similar way, click-baiting is the art that needs to be mastered by anyone who wishes to be a good writer. Click-baiting involved attracting a reader into reading the story with an interesting title that one cannot resist.

Contrary to most people's expectation we were suggested to use simple words in our article which would just simplify the reading. As told by the speaker, a reader is not expected to be a walking dictionary and instead of just flaunting our vocabulary in every article that we write, it's best reserved for placed where it's required and valued. Our confidence levels certainly went up a notch post the workshop and we were highly motivated into writing several articles.

We got a sneak peek into the working of a content based startup which is mostly based on the crowd-sourced content from writers like me and readers like you. We were also given a mock session of how to take an interview and were also given an opportunity to try it live.

Post the session we got an opportunity to have a quick Q&A session which further clarified the very few doubts that we had and then we proceeded to have a talk to few other members of the Stumagz team who motivated us towards writing articles and stories.

We ended the workshop-cum-interaction session by having a quick talk with some of the full-time interns at Stumagz to learn how they write the stories maintaining the quality and relevancy required. We genuinely are thankful to the Stumagz team for having us at their HQ and helping us improve our writing skills, and we hope that more people show interest for the upcoming series of workshops so that they benefit the best of what Stumagz has to offer!
"}]
