Those innocent creatures did not know anything. The only mistake they did was to live as a sheep in this world. They never knew that being a sheep is such a big mistake in this cruel world. Let me start off by saying this is in no way an encouragement for you to drop your books and run off into the sunset singing Pinocchio's 'There are no strings on me' song. This is something I'm slowly coming to terms with myself, something I needed to tell myself more than I need to tell the world, but then again this has to be said, it pains me to think the many thousands of people who just exist, not living their life to the fullest extent they can just because they hate themselves for being failures.

Coming from a middle class, salt of the earth, first generation to move to the big city family, I was surrounded by people who had made it big in their lives by the sweat of their brow and by sheer determination to succeed, starting families when they had nothing and growing with them. My parents, bless them, met in the 80s and went against then culturally established norms and got married, and they came from the villages of Andhra Pradesh, moving to Hyderabad, making a living and making a choice as big as getting married on their own, wasn't really easy back then. So when I see all these people around me, it makes me feel worse sometimes because these folks went against all odds to get where they are today and I can't pass a single bloody exam, right? That sort of thinking can seep through your life, you see dead ends everywhere and you don't enjoy anyone's company.

It took me some time to realize that in life, somethings are simply not meant to be. I wasn't meant for this degree, I wasn't meant to make my first startup work, but that things do get better than I need to learn from the mistakes I made and move on. Most of all, I came to terms with a few things, like

1. The concept of privilege

I perhaps would never have understood privilege until I failed spectacularly at getting my degree and then failed even more spectacularly at my first startup. I had a solid home to come back to, a permanent address I could always call a home, parents who understood and accepted me as a failure because they didn't depend on me, and the privilege of licking my wounds and feeling really bad about what happened to me before I realized I was sleeping on a bed that costs in the tens of thousands, in a room filled with posters of video games and superheros, a rack full of books and had access to a fridge full of food. This was my safety net, and even if I didn't get my B.Tech degree my parents would fund another course for me, because why wouldn't they? All my life I didn't have to work hard because I had what I wanted, and when I had to work hard for something, I couldn't do it properly and whined about it for days, and that was frankly wrong and very irresponsible of me.

2. Learning to take responsibility

Speaking of being irresponsible, I had difficulty in accepting something went wrong because of me, I even had trouble accepting situations as they formed, a costly mistake as I would later find out. Throughout my B.Tech I would blame my exam results on someone else, the professors were prejudiced against me, or the University intentionally scored my paper low because they needed to make money off students, excuses I was making for my terrible behavior instead of actually understanding what went wrong. My faults were always someone else's, I believed that they didn't understand me or hated me, but I never once realized that I was washing my hands off taking responsibility of my own actions and spent more time complaining and whining about the situation at hand rather than coming up with solutions, because that actually required me to accept responsibility.

3. The 'Log kya kahenge' conundrum and how to deal with it

I allowed myself to think of what people will think of me as a failure and it greatly affected my mental health. I showed signs of depression, I developed a terrible inferiority complex causing me to still have trouble speaking to people who've made it in life, I saw my friends get their degrees, get married, settle down in beautiful homes with a great salary and all of this got to me.

But the beautiful thing here is, life moves on with or without you. The people close to become invested in their own lives, and while they do wish well for you, it wasn't them who had expectations from you, but you who expected them to dislike you for being a failure. Good friends don't turn their backs on you even if they are invested in their own lives, and we as adults know this and respect their privacy and personal life, and unwind over a cold one once in a while. This realization also helped me develop a thick skin, and now I do what I want, without worrying about what people think of me.

Pictured below, me with thick skin

4. Your worth isn't decided by what degrees you have

I'm a writer, I write stuff. Even with a B.Tech degree, I want to continue being a writer and explore this field further in the future, so what value does a B.Tech degree hold for me? Yes, it's great to have something to fall back to in case I fail the same way Brazil failed against Germany at the 2014 World Cup, but then why would I want to fall back on a degree I absolutely have no desire to have, I would rather go back to the drawing board and study for another degree, this time something I like, because I know I can do it, and because I am privileged enough to do so, choosing whether to pay for it myself or not is something that is a choice for me, not a compulsion. So if you hate your current job and want to do something else, if you are struggling in finish your degree, always remember that it doesn't matter when you graduate (or not), from something you never chose. Your work is greater than your supposed 'worth' on paper. The degree doesn't speak about the talents you may have, and it never will. Only your work will, so go ahead and achieve greatness in your chosen field, even if it takes longer than usual.

5. It's going to be okay

The sun will still rise tomorrow, no matter what. Being a failure comes with an intense hatred for one's own self, it can manifest in many different ways, some psychological, some physical, often accompanied with despair. But the sun will still rise tomorrow, and it will be okay.

No matter what happens in life, no matter how hard you fall, you always have a choice. You can either pick yourself up or stay where you are, either way, the sun will rise tomorrow, but the choice in making the next day marginally better for yourself lies in your own hands. There's always someone around who's going to love you, who's going to listen to you and give you a shoulder to cry on, so if you want to let it out, do it, but remember that it's your responsibility to yourself to keep your head up and stride forward without fear, come what may.

Because once you hit rock bottom, there is no other way than up, and that right there is why it's going to be okay. Because life goes on, and the sun will rise tomorrow, and you will improve yourself and be a better person than you were yesterday.

While I was dreaming, I saw someone I knew from the past; that beautiful bubbly face with a charming smile and those eyes full of life now laughing back at me .That was my nine year old self. She was laughing at me while tears were welling up in her eyes. Now she is crying, asking me, "Why did you have to become like this?! Where is the real you? Why are you trying to fit in? Why are you letting them step on you like a used cigarette ?! Why are you letting them get to your head?! Why are waiting for someone to save you?! Why do you not have a little faith in yourself?! Why are waiting for someone to love you?! Why don't you say 'no'?! If this is how people grow up then I don't want you to grow up".

Stop .DON'T. Please. Look at you. See how beautiful, unique, magnificent, strong, powerful, lovely, creative, smart, kind, funny, precious, capable you are. Now go, be you; not the one that makes you forget who you are, let the legend come back to life. Don't you forget, you are loved by me, mama, papa and bhaiya and the one who is above us all "the god"; saying this she disappeared and I woke up with tears in my eyes that my nine year old self came to save me that I became my own silhouette. On this day 13 years ago, a student sitting in his room coding away to glory built and released what has now become THE name for social media and has changed the way we network, bond, engage and receive information. Yes, I am talking about Facebook, which currently has an estimated 1.86 billion users. If the users of Facebook are made into a country, it will have about 28% of the world's current population.

As a user of such a platform and as someone who makes a living through social media, over the years I've met and worked with some individuals who use social platforms to carefully build their image and use that for future opportunities. I can firmly say I am also guilty of using social media to construct and maintain the image that I have been maintaining, to ensure my present and future career opportunities in my avenue.

This is more so, in the case of entrepreneurs as what kind of a person he/she is can easily be judged through their social media profiles and most entrepreneurs, are known for having a carefully constructed social presence, with calculated posts.

This, I believe, is something that every student should do as according to some surveys, about 41% of employers check their potential employees' social media profiles before hiring. We all know how difficult it is to not share the funny cat videos or Harambe memes but it is important to understand that unlike what we say directly in our interpersonal communications, what we write/share/post on social media is there to stay.

In this context, it is imperative for students to realise and understand the kind of image they want to portray on social media. To start off with, students can first refine their 'about' section on their social profiles. So that means no more "works at student" or "works at federation of lazy and jobless people". And at least a few months before entering into the placements-job-hunt world, one should post/share content that is related to their areas of interest and their skill sets.

You never know which potential opportunity has eyes on you on social media.
"}]
Yeah! It's exams time, a terror in every student's life. Only a student knows the pain of exams and the happiness when they clear all their exams.

So how it starts!

It starts with the schedule post in WhatsApp groups. All the freaking emojis comes out.

This is all a week before exams, alert bell rings. Then exactly a hunt begins to find out the subjects, materials etc. Exactly at this point of time assignments and records comes into picture. We are already fed up with the syllabus 'what are these?'- Feeling of every student. But we will ever miss a chance to get marks for assignments because those are something which we get free of cost.

Since we are engineering students, very good at copy and paste, by hook or crook we copy everything much better than any xerox.

This is a crucial period, so every student visits their worship place. Please don't think off any temple or church, they are nothing but xerox centers. These will be flooded with students for micro xerox.

The night before exam, when the WhatsApp groups will be busy as ever before. Night outs, group studies, collection of important questions, what not!

On the day of exam, as soon as you enter the hall the exam chair looks like a throne full of thorns. A thought hits the mind 'Why should we sit for three long hours?'. But we are left with no other option.

And there comes the one and only enemy of every student - 'THE QUESTION PAPER'. We have our enemy right in front of us and all the grudge but don't know what to do. A very pathetic situation to look at your friend beside you and his priceless expression. Helpless.

However, out of the hall. What comes next? The most annoying thing - 'THE RESULTS'. We prepare our mind to face them. But again the same thing 'A BACKLOG'.

Uff! God!! Why do you have all the grace on toppers.

I hope every engineering student can relate.

This is the exam cycle, don't know when it ends.

Our heart goes out to the poor and the destitute of the city when we see them suffering, begging for something as basic as a glass of water at times, their bones sticking out of their thin frame, often hunched with the burdens of an unfair life. It wasn't until I volunteered at an orphanage that I found my true calling," he says, speaking about the start of his journey, "speaking to children about their hopes and dreams, their needs, I came to a realization that there are so many people that need help, and decided to do something about it, that's how Serve Needy came into existence."

"The Daily Medical Service is a recent initiative for which we bought an ambulance, a nurse, a helper and a driver. I usually go along with them every day and help the poor, often those who cannot even walk to go to a government hospital. We go and help them where we can and make sure they get the medical attention they need," speaking about his new initiative, "I'm sure this is something that is the first of it's kind in India."

There are many who fall through the cracks in society into obscurity, and it warms our hearts that there are people like Goutham Kumar who take the initiative and care for these people. "It's almost like a full time job now. At one point I had to choose between personal life and social service, and I chose social service. There are no regrets, too many people ignore the poor, their voices are disregarded, they are looked down upon, and frankly that is insulting. Every human has a right to a dignified life, even those who are often unseen, and uncared for" he concludes, with conviction in his voice.

From birth to adolescence to adulthood, parents tend to invest precious time and effort into their child’s life by picking out what is best for them. They engage their son or daughter in various extracurricular actives such as sports, performing arts, and tutoring to be on track with grades regardless of what it costs. They help in making significant life decisions, like deciding which college to go or which career to pursue. Decisions which ultimately make-or-break the individual you befit in the near future. Nonetheless, every parent wants their child to have the limestone in society.

But when does helping turn into hovering?

Living through countless years of helicopter parenting has been an agonizing issue for many amongst us. A helicopter parent is a term used to describe a guardian who is constantly on top of his or her child by meticulously observing every action they take. While it is important for parents to be involved in their children's lives, parents must slowly begin to take a step back as their children near adulthood. In some cases hovering may actually give the opposite of the intended effect. For instance, take a butterfly that evolves from a cocoon. If it opens the cocoon by its self, it flies fairly. However, if you’re too generous and rip its cocoon open in the intension of helping it come out to the world, it will spread its wings open in attempt to take flight but eventually falls and crashes. Hovering parents confine growth by not letting their children take responsibility for their actions and proper judgment when it is needed. Parents obviously would like to believe that their kids will always be "their kids" but their is incredible merit to be gained from teaching them independence. In general, such parenting has more flaws than benefits towards society and future generations.
I get it, your children are precious to you, but they are people with their own thoughts, dreams and hopes. Let them go, let them breathe, let them live.
"}]
