Something that should have been a regular journey turned into a memorable one after many moments of uncertainty for the people on the Ahmedabad-Puri Express as final year interning MBBS student Vipin Khadse helped a 24 year old woman deliver a baby while the train was still some distance away from Nagpur Railway Station, according to a report on Times of India.

The report says that while the young mother's relatives had pulled the chain which prompted the TC and other staff on the train to go around asking for doctors on board, which is what attracted Vipin's attention. Vipin says that he didn't speak up on account of being experienced and thinking there might be another, more experienced doctor on the train. It was only when they came around for a second round of asking for help, did he realise that he might be the most experienced doctor on board himself.

Meanwhile, TOI reported that the other passengers had cleared out the compartment while the women turned it into a makeshift delivery room. When Khadse arrived, what he saw made his heart sink, scaring him. Not only was the woman bleeding profusely, the baby, instead of crowning (which is coming out head first) instead had a shoulder coming out first, saying it would be a complicated delivery would be an understatement.

Vipin, however, gathered his courage and used WhatsApp to contact his seniors, when a senior resident, Shika Mallik, guided him over the phone on what to do. Using the tools available to them at the moment, Vipin's little medical kit which he had made a habit of carrying everywhere with him since his internship started, and a midwife on the train, they managed to deliver a healthy baby boy.

I don't know why I do this to myself. I've been so used to the horrendous quality of Chetan Bhagat's books I don't even remember the last good book he wrote. I tried, okay, I tried very hard to go into this book with an open mind, that is to say, my face looked like someone had asked me to fish out pearls of wisdom from the septic tank of a boys hostel, and I was trying to make the cringe on my face go away before I could start reading. Surprisingly I did manage to get rid of the scowl before it slowly crept back on my face on account of the book being horrendously bad.

Do you like Bollywood movies, complete with its innate inane one dimensional characters with no development arc who exist just for the sake of existing and serve no purpose and the movie goes on to become a pointless snoozefest filled with dumb moments that make no sense and would probably never happen in real life? Yeah then you'll like Half-Girlfriend.

Bhagat has had a long enough career to know his audience by now, most people who read his books do not want to think beyond what is written on the pages of the book, there is no subtext or an overarching plotline that connects the dots, the characters in the book exist for the sake of existing, just like the book itself, which is written for the sake of writing, it serves no purpose except to be adapted as a Bollywood movie.

The reason to compare this book to a Bollywood movie is because this doesn't read like a novel, but a screenplay to a movie, which Bhagat knows will be picked up by a studio anyway because that's how big he is now. I fail to see why he doesn't just stick to writing screenplay instead if he so badly wants his books to be adapted as films, but I suppose we all know the answer to that. It starts with m and ends with y and runs the entire world.

Another parallel with Bollywood is how similar all of Bhagat's books are. There's a protagonist with low self esteem, male, finds a woman who is feisty, intelligent, beautiful and falls in love, and then there is sex. If you asked an average Chetan Bhagat reader which one of his books you're talking about using just that one line of description, they won't be able to tell, because it could be the plotline of any single one of his books! Apparently nobody has heard of the term 'fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me'.

I hate having to repeat this over and over again, but I do not hate Chetan Bhagat, I dislike him for writing drivel that sells, but I don't hate him for the singular reason that he got a lot of my friends into reading, which has helped me a lot, so I owe him a thanks, and I hope he decides to improve his writing, because we need Indian authors children can look up to, and while there are plenty of Indian authors people can look up to, Bhagat's fame puts him in a unique position of impacting the youth outside Urban India, and that is why his books annoy me so much. Instead of using his position to write good literature, he's writing for the lowest common denominator, and while that may be his choice, not liking his books is mine.

Now that I think about it, maybe an argument can be made for the fact that not all forms of entertainment has to be intellectually relevant, and that there are a large number of people that enjoy senseless plots written for the sole purpose of escapism and validation of their own personal insecurities, but then again, if everyone does the same in India, then there is nobody actually working towards redefining the medium itself with a ground breaking book.

Final Verdict:

I wouldn't recommend this book even to my worst enemy, let alone a friend or an acquaintance. If you've made it this far, you can probably guess that I'm not looking forward to the movie coming out soon. But then again, there's nothing really I can say about Bollywood that'll make a difference, this is an industry that ignored performances from Aligarh and Dangal and gave it to Rustom, of all the movies.

Maybe I should stop being this bitter all the time and take a chill pill. Until the next book review, people, stay tuned to stuMagz!
"}]

When you hear the word rap, the first thing that comes to your mind is the image of a white or a black guy, dressed in baggy stuff and waving hands and going about rapidly saying the lyrics in a rhythmic way but Pranav Chaganty, our own Hyderabadi rapper has a different opinion about the genre.

"It is common perception that rap is a western thing but I believe rap is very Indian and more so, very Telugu. If you read the Telugu version of our epics and watch old Telugu movies centered around Mahabharata, you'll find poetic conversations between characters that very closely resemble rap battles," says the 26 year old rapper, whose recent video on Pani Puri got over 1.25 lakh views within a span of 10 days, who adds, "Having grown up in a typical Telugu family, surrounded by Telugu poetry, I came across poetry by legendary writers like Vemulavada Bhimakavi and Palakuriki Somanathudu and their poetry felt a lot like rap. I wanted to write poetry in Telugu and it finally happened in the past few years."

And in regard to his hit video Pani Puri, he says "Rap is poetry that people connect with and in the same way, I wanted to write about something everyone can connect to, I didn't decide on anything specific and while thinking along these lines, I realised Pani Puri is something that's common to every Indian and I just wrote it. I didn't think it'll become this popular, I just went on to write what I feel about it." The two minute song highlights the emotions that surround the whole Pani Puri experience. It took him just an hour to write and he collaborated with Tamada Media to produce it. The song, directed by Sriharsha, was shot by Sekhar Boon and Jones Katru and edited by Raviteja Nannimala, with the music by Rajesh Raj and Satish taking care of the mixing and mastering.

Writing isn't something that he's always done, as Pranav explains, "After finishing my electrical engineering from VBIT, I worked in Merchant Navy and I sailed for a year. But I always knew that I wanted to write and I quit my job as a sailor and I came back to Hyderabad to write. The challenge of linking different words together to give rise to phrases and sentences with a beautiful meaning is what gives me joy."

"I didn't make this video to get a break or something. I just gave in my 100% and the rest naturally came. This is what I'll say to students too. When you want to do something, give it your 100%. Whether it'll become a success or not is not in your hands; the effort is in your hands. Just do it perfectly," adds Pranav, who just wrote and shot for a song on the ongoing IPL.
