2019 is coming to an end, with it many of our plans also come to an end. Well, we can't change the past, so let's forget about yesterday and focus on tomorrow.

txt

We have 2020coming up, so I want to welcome 2020 with a bang. There are many things I want to get done in 2020, so let's start with my first plan (the one I hate the most) getting rid of all my backlogs and that means a lot of studying, unfortunately. Hoping that I survive the amount of studying required for clearing my backlogs my second plan is (the one I love) completing my Harry Potter fanfic. The most important one to learn how to drive, let's hope I do that without getting into some big accident.

txt

Well, those were the grand ones now on to simple day-to-day plans. First, I would like to make my breakfast for staters instead of my mother. Second, pay more attention in classes (I doubt it will ever happen). Make time for reading novels instead of wasting it on other things (likely to happen).

txt

Ever since I started working at stuMagz, I get a lot of friend requests from students on social media and on their profile, under the political views section, it usually is a variant of "i hate politics" (notice the non-capitalised 'i' there) and it reminded me of several of my friends who had something similar on their profiles when they were students. The on-going protests in the country and the varied reactions and viewpoints towards them have prompted me to write this.

The dictionary definition of politics goes something like this 'the activities associated with the governance of a country or area'. The very fact that politics means the activities associated with the governance, means that every citizen should be politically aware and especially students. This makes it particularly important for students to be politically aware as students are the ones who are the future of this country or any other country for that matter. It is also important for students to realise that regardless of the perception towards politics, politics and the policies made by the ones ruling a country or a state affect everyone's lives directly.

It becomes more important for students to understand politics and to be aware about the ongoing politics of the country when the students have aspirations to join the civil services of the country or even aspire to enter politics as without an understanding of what is what and without an understanding of political ideologies and their relevance to the socio-economic conditions of the country, it is practically impossible for someone to function in a good manner in those roles. I firmly believe that that is the reason behind most politicians being what they are right now, because of a lack of understanding of these aspects when they were students.

The fact that student movements across the world and even in India have led to great changes happening should also tell students that it is extremely important for students to know about the political scenario in their own place.

The Telangana agitation, the Jallikattu protests, the Nirbhaya protests, the fight against the emergency in the 1970s, all of these are prime examples of how politically aware students can actually make a change.

txt
rich_1576821500191

I was trying to write an article after long time and to be honest it was falling apart. Yes, later I realized I was facing writer’s block (as everyone says it). There are ten thousand things buzzing in my mind but why am I hesitating to give them a form?

I think there are few reasons why. Fear was the first I could think of, fear of the outcome, fear of criticism from readers, fear of not doing it right. And this is when I feel our defense mechanism comes to rescue i.e. ‘Perfectionism’. This particular instinct just makes everything even worse than before. We get on a journey to produce commendable piece of work, which doesn’t really happen.

I tried to figure out few ways on getting out of this hassle called writer’s block, better description would be paralysis of thinking. Sounds funny and ironical, right? I was facing writer’s block and now, here I am writing an article how to get rid of it.
First step to cure something is diagnosis, and the symptoms which I experienced were as below:

• Not able to formulate something that makes sense.

• Procrastinating and squandering my time, eventually postponing writing the article.

• Just getting stuck with thought of being in state of writer’s block.

• Thinking about the deadline.

Now, to control to damage and get out of this situation i.e. finding the cure, I experimented and tried the followings ways. I guess these might help you too;

• Reading a book.

• Proof reading, this was kind of win-win situation for me- Not only I got to distract myself into thinking and writing again but also I could help my friends with proof reading.

• Engage in physical activity, to get that lazy brain coordination some blood flow.

• Singing and listening to music, they for sure will help bust the pressure and focus on particular thing.

• Talk to someone close and get advise regarding the creative crisis, who knows when the light-bulb might glow.

• Gathering ideas or information, nothing particularly in sequence. Just random ideas I guess.

• Write. Yeah, just write even if they are bunch of senseless lines or even random thoughts.

• Take time, get inspiration about the topic and completely understand it.

Writer’s block isn’t any permanent paralysis of ability to write, it’s just a phase that can be passed with simple action of writing. So, just don’t give up the next time you get stuck. Keep trying; that’s how we learn and improve, right?

txt
rich_1576530394274

Time and again, history has shown that students are among the biggest change-makers whether it is by innovating something or it is by questioning something and demanding for a better one. Be it the Quit India, Civil Disobedience, Dandi Salt Protest or more recently, the Telangana movement or the Jallikattu movement. Students have been the frontrunners of any massive movement demanding a change and that makes them potential power-houses of change for the good of the entire country/world.

Why am I talking about students' protests?

Unless you're living under a rock and have no access to social media of any sorts, chances are high that you would have seen and read about the student-led protests going on about the Citizenship Amendment Act, especially in Jamia Milia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University. Thousands of students are protesting the act and there have been alleged instances of students setting buses on fire and more damage to public property, with the police there responding in a violent manner to control it. While I don't want to go into the details or take a stance on the politics involved, I do want to comment on the way students are protesting there and how it can and should be done.

If you look at the 2017 Jallikattu protests in Chennai, one thing that stands out is the way students protested. It was an entirely peaceful protest done in a democratic manner. They did not resort to acts of violence and acts that can be put under the term 'rioting'. Another example that comes to mind is how the Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg has been raising her voice and campaigning on climate change. The Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai also raised her voice and campaigned in a non-violent manner.

This is what I want to convey to students. While students are a major force to initiate and lead any change, it is important for students to understand that it can be done in the right manner, without causing any damage to anyone or any property. Here, it is also important to understand that acts of violence and rioting only result in negative consequences for the students themselves as they can be injured, arrested, jailed, or even worse.

While I was reading about the CAA protests, I came across a video of a police officer in Aligarh who urged the students to protest in a peaceful manner and in fact, he even assured them that he will be with them in the protest if it is done in a peaceful, democratic manner.

As students, please understand your own potential to cause a change and understand the right way of doing it. You can also write your opinions on stuMagz and let them be known.

txt
rich_1576498781007

Women are judged at every point of their life. Every little thing they do is judged, why? As for the answer to why different people different opinions. Some because they think women represent their house and some because they want a good guy to marry a girl. But one thing remains in common with these people they don't consider the feelings and emotions of that woman.

txt

We think this judgment problem is only with the people who are narrow-minded or not from a high-fi society, but unfortunately, this problem is also there with the open-minded just because they are subtle in showing their feelings we think they are not judgmental.

txt

This judgment is the reason women think twice about talking to these things to even their families. They would be afraid of how they are going to react, would they be disappointed and so on.

txt

One of my personal experiences was when I was on the way home and a guy commented on my eyes, given that I was wearing a burqa with niquab. While it is true the guys need to change the view they look at women. The women also need to speak up and not be afraid of being judged, and not judge when someone tells you something like this and try to be as understanding as possible.

txt
