There's no shortage of hearsay floating around in the lead up to joining college. We're here to bust those myths out the water – for better or for worse! As if surviving college isn't stressful enough, it's likely that you'll hear a whole plethora of misinformation and urban myths floating around that will sometimes make it totally impossible to separate fact from fiction.

We've been there - we swallowed the tales whole and as a result either wasted time worrying about stuff that was completely fabricated, or panicked last minute once realising we'd been lulled into a false sense of security by fellow students.

Anyway, it's time to put some of these myths about college to bed, so we can all get on with our lives.

txt
rich_1496217822046

There is something every student must know and understand to get ahead in life. There are a lot of things people might tell you about life and some of them might even be true, but there are certain things that are true no matter what, and to get ahead in life, sometimes it is important to remember those few cheats that help you get ahead.

Calling them cheats makes it sound like something illegal, but trust me, it is just a matter of focus and patience.

1. Find a great boss:

5 million engineers graduate, but the loss of service sector jobs is rising. This is due to various factors, one among them being the skill mismatch: What you learn in college is not what the industry expects. This leads to students turning working professionals to become confused, which can often lead to making mistakes and the wrong choices in their career.

When students think about the future, they are always worried and sad because they do not have the freedom to explore and focus on the wrong career path which is just for resume purpose. At this juncture, they always require some guidance and here are 5 things which are very important.

I started my career with a shopfloor too and a salary of Rs 15k where my friends were getting Rs 35k. But I was creating my future and it takes time. Find a boss who is a mentor and can guide you on a great path. Age 24 & 25 will be tough years of your life where you will be stuck deciding what to do next. Future looks blurred. Keep defining the purpose of your existence and what means to you a lot as an individual. There is no such protocol of doing an MBA, getting married at 26/27, Doing an MS in US. The rationale behind all this is very simple. India and the world have gone through multiple revolutions, Social, Industrial and more. Those who came before us could only aspire to become a worker or a technician when they started their careers, due to various reasons. The Software revolution brought aspirations to join an MNC which they could join right out of college, which in turn gave the luxury of exploring their careers.

Don't let the thought, "Let me join here and then figure out what to do" come to your mind because that never happens. Yur first step after college decides a lot of things in your life. People, learning, skills, knowledge are all the most important things, but not the place of job, salary, role or company. Don't search for social validation, go with your gut and always make sure you are employable.

Writing one can say is a dying art. However, CBIT believes in encouraging and nurturing budding writers. It recognises that students during their studies in intermediate might not have got the time to hone their literary skills and hence makes the necessary efforts to develop and enhance them during their time in CBIT. The culmination of these efforts led to the introduction of Celeritias-the annual college magazine and Transcendent-CBIT 's official newsletter.

The new edition of Celeritas is released every year during the induction ceremony. The magazine includes articles by the editorial board as well as contributions from students of CBIT as well. What is even more commendable is the fact that the editorial board comprises of only students with a faculty coordinator. The new members are inducted into the editorial board only after a rigorous vetting process. It is the editorial board that is responsible for the design of the cover page, selection and editing of articles and ensuring that the publication is done on time. Another point to be noted that the articles are written in three languages- English, Hindi and Telugu. The articles can be stories, interesting anecdotes, jokes or even puzzles. Apart from this, there is also another section where the students contribute artworks that they have created.

Transcendent on the other hand is published twice a year. One edition is released during the induction ceremony and the other one is released during the annual fest. This newsletter is also completely done by the students. A different editorial board is responsible for the timely publication of this newspaper. In this case, the editorial board consists of only students. However, this newsletter is published only in English. The editorial board first holds brain-storming sessions where the topics of the articles are decided after which every member of the editorial board is assigned an article or two. After these deadlines are set for timely completion of articles which are then edited by the sub-editors, editors and finally the editors-in-chief. Thus, the final newsletter which is published is at par with any national newsletter that we might come across.

The students of CBIT take great pride in these works and are always eager to get their hands on the latest edition...
"}]

Plantation drives are a common thing in our country, every politician does that and every corporate does that for publicity. Even government schemes like the Telangana government's Harita Haram has been reduced to nothing more than a photo opportunity, only because of the fact that no one really bothers about taking care of the plants after they're planted.

But three youngsters from Hyderabad, Nikhil Talluri, P. S. Madhava and Pravallika Koku, have found a unique solution to this problem. As a part of their NGO 'Lokakshemam', the three initiated a program called Patron of a Plant and with this program, literally anyone can adopt a plant for just Rs. 2 a day.

The seed of the idea was first sown in November last year, when Nikhil's father, Mr. Prabhakar Talluri, told him to take up something along these lines. "When my father first advised me, I thought about it and as a pilot project, we took up the plants along the Suchitra-Kompally stretch. These plants were planted in accordance with the Haritha Haram scheme and we then hired a trolley-auto and a driver and started taking care of these plants on a regular basis. Over the last six months, we firmly realised what can happen if we nurture the plants carefully," explains Nikhil, who quit his corporate job to do this, adding "It's a simple fact, plants won't grow by themselves in these weather and environmental conditions. With the amount of pollution that's there everywhere, plants need careful nurturing."

They also identified 10 varieties of plants, with tough bio-genetics, that can survive in most climates and are now in the process of planting these, provided someone takes up the expenses and becomes a patron of a plant. And they are doing this in accordance with the honourable Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's vision of achieving 33% forest cover in the city.

To ensure transparency of how the funds are used, one of the team members, P. S. Madhava, a CA aspirant, thoroughly checks the inflow and outflow of funds and Pravallika (who manages communications and media relations) sends out a quarterly magazine on how the adopted plants are progressing. "We give out progress of the trees and make the patrons aware of the ground reality about the environment here through the online magazine," says Nikhil.

In addition to planting trees that patrons pay for, Lokakshemam also plants more trees and in case a plant/tree of a patron gets damaged, the organisation then adds one from their kitty to the patron's account.

They are further planning on taking up several projects including a spot fixing project in Secunderabad and are on the search for volunteers. Whoever is interested, can just visit their website and apply to be a volunteer.
"}]

Feminists, feminism, equality. What do we understand by all this? Women empowerment, and the images that popup in our heads are of women in rage, shouting their guts out for their equality, for equal pay, for their voices to be heard, marching on the streets with banners, reminding everybody that they are humans too, and not just men.

Feminism, this term has faced a lot of criticism over the years. There is hate, love, support, preconceived notions, assumptions, and a lot more. Equality of women was so oppressed that, when voices were heard, it was perceived by everyone as an aggressive movement for female domination. While, all along, it was just for equal rights. Of course, there are a lot of women around the world, who perceive feminism to be female domination in the world. And its 2017 now, equality is no more just about women. It is about everyone, women, men, trans people. There is injustice going on with all the genders existing today, because of the norms set by society. In all honesty, we have come to a point where, it is no more about just women empowerment, we have to look deeper into this matter; equality. Because lets see, a boy liking the colour pink, is ridiculed more than a girl being a tomboy. Norms like, makeup is for women. Society’s norms, have induced these gender roles and stereotypes. We should learn to respect individual choice, they can wear, look, do whatever they feel like. It is about respect. So, are we really achieving equality when all the genders are facing discrimination, to an extreme, at some point of their life.

After people going gaga over feminism, it is perceived as something that is female dominance which, of course, made another movement arise called, “meninism”. An internet satirical trend that was against everything feminism preached. All along, assuming feminism is dominance of women.

What are we actually looking and fighting for; dominance or equality? I do have an answer to this. What we should be fighting for as people is, equality. Because boys, men, trans men, too, face a lot of disputes. But because they play this so called ‘dominant species’ role in the society, they are always treated as superiors and their emotions, are not given any value. And their emotions, everything, does matter and has a value. Acknowledging that men get raped, abused, harassed, molested, and saying it is not okay for them to face something as horrible as these things, fighting for that, is equality.

I came across a post on Facebook, a picture of an article saying, “Man from Africa got raped by two women, who after, stole his semen”, I was personally triggered by what men commented in the comments, “He definitely enjoyed it.” “lol, why would he mind two women raping him” Well! Consent? Ever heard of that? Yeah, consent is as important, irrespective of gender. While men in the comment section were making fun of this man for not enjoying the rape, women were the one who kept on repeating how wrong all of this is. Because, hey, rape is never a joke. Age, gender, race, nothing matters, it is injustice no matter what. To the women who commented saying rape, irrespective of gender is wrong, got targeted by men with no logic who said, “we can do whatever we want.” What i observed here is; men themselves ridiculed this situation of a man getting raped. While women, understand and can empathise with the trauma that person must have faced. It is not okay for anyone to get raped, abused, assaulted, molested, harassed.

This is where we as a society are at, its okay for men to face these, rather men should enjoy it. And this is the exactly why we need feminism; equality.

It is important for us, as a society to fight any kind of injustice, be it with women, men, LGBTQ. Now, let’s fight for all that it takes to achieve equality.
"}]
