"How Growing Up As A Military Brat Prepped Me For The Real World..."

I love meeting new people, going new places and trying new things. But I've never, in my whole life, been able to meet someone new and answer the question, “Where are you from?” without slight hesitation.

Why? Because I'm an army brat, and all military kids go through the exact same thing.Do we say where we were born, where we first remember living, where we lived the longest amount of time or where we went to high school?

The chances are, all four of those would have different answers. I was born in Varanasi, I first remember living in Jammu, I lived the longest amount of time in a different part of Hyderabad and Pune and I went to high school in Hyderabad.

A lot of people have told me they're so glad their dad or mom was never in the army because they would've hated moving every couple of years.

But for us, all this is normal. Having our parent working weird hours and being gone for months at a time were just things we knew.

We learned so much from growing up surrounded by military people and family members. We learned to accept everyone from all different walks of life, because our little base schools were full of different people from anywhere in the world. This taught us a lot about different cultures and about acceptance. We knew we were all different, but we were all kind of the same. We made friends with these people. We lost friends just as soon as we made new ones. Things were always changing and people were always moving. We quickly learned to just live in and love every moment as it came.

As hard as it got at times, I think I speak for us all when I say I would not trade it for anything. We learned bravery and strength from a very early age. Our military parents were brave. They put themselves in danger to protect a country full of people they didn't even know. We learned strength from our parent that stayed home to take care of us. This parent was equally strong for getting the job done and never showing defeat in front of us.

Our families were different from most, but they loved all the same. We just learned to take advantage of the time we had when we were all home. Being an army brat taught me that family always comes first. It taught me respect. It not only taught me to respect my family, but to respect everyone else, including myself.

I grew up watching men and women salute each other. They shook hands. They joked. They never showed each other disrespect. It was a camaraderie that I loved growing up close to. We must support each other, not fight. Everyone has their moments, and I'm sure these brave men and women didn't always find it easy to get along, but they never showed it in front of others if they could help it. The good always outweighs the bad, especially when your friends are people you'll be fighting for your country with.

Growing up an army brat taught me countless lessons that I will be forever grateful for.

Adaptability

Like I was saying before, I've never lived in one place longer than four years. And while that did suck as a child, it has made me so much stronger than a lot of other people my age. In any environment you put me in, I know how to adapt, how to talk to new people and how to fit in.

Leadership

I learned at an early age the role of being a leader. It maybe challenging but it is important to be able to lead.

Perspective

Perhaps, the most important lesson I've learned from being an army brat is putting things into perspective.Knowing that our parents put their lives on the line for something greater than themselves put things into perspective for me.

Growing up an army brat was one of my favorite childhood memories wrapped into one chapter of life. And I'm sure all of us army children would agree.

Many children I grew up with ended up joining the military as well, including my sister, and I couldn't be more proud of any of these people.

To conclude, I just want to thank everyone who supports our troops, who has served in the military, and those still serving. You inspire me with your bravery and dedication. I also want to thank family members and friends of those noble individuals. It takes a lot of courage to stay strong knowing a loved one is overseas fighting for our country. Your strength does not go unnoticed.

Being an Army brat has made me who I am today: strong, adaptable and independent, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

As September is almost upon us, I found myself thinking about just why resolutions fail as spectacularly as they do. The New Year's is a fantastic way of getting people motivated enough to take care of themselves and hit the gym or quit smoking or any other vice they might have, but why does it disappear all of a sudden?

Considering how spectacularly I had failed my own resolutions this year, it was an interesting thought to ponder upon the day before the 9th month hits us full in the face.

So, why exactly do resolutions fail?

I suppose it has something to do with the fact that motivation is just like any other emotion, it cannot be constant and it cannot be expected to be there for you all the time. Motivation is built, I'm told, through habits which are positive in nature. For instance, taking a bath twice a day and brushing twice a day does a fantastic job in ensuring you stay clean and healthy, which is a positive habit to have. That, combined with a strict schedule where you wake up every morning at around 5 or 6, certainly helps you in staying motivated.

Here's the problem though. This is a world of infinite attractions. There is always one thing or another that is just waiting to grab your eyeballs and have your attention for as long as it can. It is imperative, then, that you learn the importance of self-control.

I do think self-control and learning to say no are connected to each other, for learning to say no is also how to learn to say no to yourself, an art in itself. No, you don't need to watch that extra episode of Breaking Bad past your self imposed bed time, neither do you need to stay on your phone longer than needed. Turn off your phone, leave it for charging, read a book for hour and then lights out at 11 PM, chop chop.

It really is that simple, it is only us that overcomplicate things.

Sure, friends birthdays are important and stuff, but not above your sleeping time. Until you can fix your own cycle of sleep, you shouldn't be going out anywhere. There are already enough distractions as it is, not to mention the fact that with social media, kids as young as 15 are staying up till 2 or 3 AM, a tragedy in itself. That is the age you should be getting a ton of sleep in.

Resolutions are easy to keep, it is just us who assign too much value to it and overwhelm ourselves, which results in us not actually keeping our own promises. I believe in you. You can do it.

And so can I.
"}]
So, as horrible as it makes me feel to use the deaths of three young men who died while using Facebook Live during driving, I'm actually at a point where I'm jaded enough to not move a muscle in remorse, but care enough to write this article. I've seen so many people use their phones while driving their motorcycles, it is utterly ridiculous. Not only do these people not endanger their own lives, on which I have lost all opinion and respect, but they endanger the lives of others who are just trying to survive our roads. Which is what we basically do on our roads by the way, we don't drive, we survive. We hope we don't end up a statistic and that our brains won't be splattered across the road when we leave our house every morning. Props to those eminent personalities that seem to accelerate while they hold the phone to their ear by pressing it between their cheek and their bicep.

1. Keep your eyes on the road:

Is this really that hard? I mean is it really that hard?

When you're driving, is it really so hard to keep your eyes on the road at all times? To see where people are coming from because clearly there's way too many folks in India to care about a few dead bodies here and there, right?

WRONG!

For the love of god, keep your phones in your pocket and keep your eyes on the road. There's all sorts of weird people crawling all over the streets and you definitely don't want blood all over yourself or your car.

2. Stop to take a call:

Another thing that has baffled me about my fellow countrymen and women. When you have to absolutely take a call and there's no other way, just stop to the side of the road and talk in peace. Why on earth do you want to put everyone around you in risk (and yourself, but seriously if you think you are going to be okay while talking on the phone while driving, you deserve something happen to you) and potential take someone's life because you couldn't be bothered to extend a minute of your time to talk to someone on the phone.

3. Look at the Speedometer instead of Snapchat's speed filter:

You do realise that the car comes equipped with a speedometer for you to see how fast you're going right? But no, of course not, how on earth will you show off to your friends on Snapchat, showing them how fast you're going. That's the cool thing now, right? Risk killing people just to impress some morons who don't even remember your last name.

I feel ashamed I even have to say don't do it for something this simple.

It doesn't matter how cute your crush is, if you're crushed in an accident, it won't matter anymore. Stay off your phone and don't text when you're driving!

5. All The Gear, All The Time:

A rule to swear by, make sure you're fully equipped when you're on the bike so you can ignore calls safely until you are sure you want to check it safely. Make sure you have all the right protective gear, from jackets, kneepads, elbow pads and of course, helmets, before you set off on a high speed ride, and for the love of god, forget that you have a phone for that duration.

Clear the decks and make way for the big ship! SCL season 3 is on its way to sail away to a land of Business Connections with Fun. In a world of a busy rat race, SCL makes the best platform to connect and get noticed in the startup ecosystem.

Startup Cricket League is an informal networking platform to unite investors, mentors and startup founders. It is an in and out exchanging platform which works on building the bond between stakeholders of this environment. What started as an idea to provide an informal platform for Entrepreneurs, Mentors and Investors, is now a very successful event conducted across the country- Hyderabad, Delhi and Bangalore. This genius of a concept was made into a reality by Sai Kiran Gunda in 2015.

SCL is divided into 6 verticals, the big focused industries:

1. Business Blazers - B2B, Enterprise, Services

2. ECom Titans - ECommerce, mCommerce, Marketplace

3. Front Foot Techies - IoT, AI, ML, AR, VR

4. Finance Fighters - Fintech, Commerce, Payments

5. Lifestyle Leopards - Healthcare, Education, Fashion, F&B

6. Travel Thunders - Travel, Logistics, Hospitality

The idea is to bring together the best startups in the ecosystem together to bond over and play the sport the whole country loves with the passion of a thousand suns. Entrepreneurs will team up with other entrepreneurs, investors and mentors to represent their industry. There is a stronger connection developed and all 6 teams leave winning irrespective of the scores. The sight of these teams donning their team jerseys and playing will show true sportsmanship. Founders of 8 different startups from one sector will play along with investors and mentors of the same sector, uniting their industry like never before.

We reached out to friends and family staying in Mumbai as the situation worsened with incessant rains that simply refused to stop no matter what. Those close to me said that the rain began sometime early in the morning and did not stop throughout the day, lashing on the city for hours upon hours, continuing on well into the darkness as the day burned and the high tide of 4:25 PM began, which made the situation worse, but then again, this is Mumbai we are talking about.

People found shelter, people found food, people found places to have fun, and people found parties. More importantly, people shared. Groups of people stood guard and kept a watch on the water levels and the streets for people stuck out in the unforgiving rain, throwing around supplies to stock up in the case the power was cut. Pets were rescued, people were dragged out of the rain and into towels and blankets before being handed a hot cup of chai and some vada pav. All this happened not to people who knew each other, but complete strangers.

The Spirit of Mumbai, they call it. A city with more people than some countries (or continents), comes together like none other during disasters like these. In the face of disaster, Mumbaikars become one. There's no caste, creed, colour or bias. Survival is a singular instinct, but it takes a bigger person than most of this country can hope to be to ensure your fellow human survives with you.

This isn't the first time, of course. In 2005, I was in Mumbai and stuck in the worst flooding of Mumbai's history. Being tiny back then, I was stuck in a current that dragged me away from my family and a young woman, about 18 or 19 years old, dived after me to grab me out of the swirling waters. I had no idea where I was being dragged off to, but I remember being scared, and I remember the rain. Relentless rain, unstoppable and without mercy. Droplets fatter than an elephant falling on my face, so fierce it seemed like the gods themselves had unleashed all their fury upon us.

But from the moment the pregnant clouds loomed menacingly over the Maximum City, it had already braced itself. This wouldn't be their first tango with heavy rain, the people of the city probably though as they prepared supplies and stocked up on cooking fuel to cook in emergency, and it won't be their last.

txt
rich_1504088902772

Of course, while talking and praising the spirit of Mumbai every year there is an issue is the very definition of a non-solution: a fact citizens are taking up with the BMC authorities, it does warm my heart to see complete strangers come together to help each other in their time of need. As I get off the phone with my friends in Mumbai who were shacked up in their office and partying the night away, I thought to myself that this is what makes Mumbai what it is. Their iron will to stand up to anything that comes their way.

And while Mumbai might seem overwhelming and ridiculously fast to someone who has never been there before, the same people that rush past you to their destinations are the ones who will turn around, extend a hand and drag you out of the water and into the shelter. That's just how Mumbaikars are, a slice of everyone from across the country. After all, all roads in India lead to Mumbai.
"}]
This week has got a new reason for joy. All of you know about Sahaya club of CMRTC. The club has introduced a new scheme "The Day of Giving". According to the club on 26th of every month, they are going to open a charity and donation section where anyone from the college can donate old clothes, food, electronic devices (repairable), money etc. These things will be given to the needy people. This scheme focuses on the development of the lower part of society which is still lacking an access to basic necessities of life. It’s really a pleasure to see students giving their time to bring brightness into someone else’s life. On its opening week members of Sahaya have seen a noticeable amount of contribution from students. I think in the coming weeks they will see more co- operation from students. Moreover, they can spread awareness about this and tell the motives behind this kind initiative.

India is labeled as a developing country but how long are we going to be just developing country? When we talk about development we should not only think about bringing more and more latest technologies to our country or developing its global market. We should also take a time to time check on the people who are below poverty level. First we should try to provide support to the poor. There are millions who starve for food, who lack shelter from worst weather conditions, and more over the people who still just dream of education. I hope soon we can see an India where no one sleeps with an empty stomach and a India where even the soldiers sleep peacefully! A wise man once said that a startup shouldn't just be about making money. Truly great start-ups, he said, solve problems, problems that humanity currently faces and the problems it will potentially face in the future. It doesn't hurt to be prepared, in fact, it might even pay to be prepared.

A couple of weeks ago, we wrote about Young Professionals in Space, a major event to bring together space based startups and professionals from across the world to interact with those among us who still look up to the stars and dream to this day.

Today, we are here to talk about the listed startups that are slated to attend the meeting from November 24 through to 26 (tickets not yet available). Check out the website by clicking here.

The startups on the Young Professionals in Space website are listed under the 'Startups in Space' banner and considering their efforts, I frankly agree. The startups and the people bringing them together, along with short descriptions, is the purpose of this article. Check it out here!

Startups in Space:

1. Bellatrix Aerospace: While we cannot confirm at this point of time whether the company was named after the truly evil Harry Potter character or the massive blue-white giant star in the Orion belt that 8.2 times the size of our own Sun, although we are leaning towards the latter more than the former.

While the star itself might be millions of light-years away, the company that adopts its name is right here, in Mysore. Started by like-minded young people, this is what their about page reads:

Bellatrix Aerospace is a research and development company developing orbital launch vehicles (rockets) and electric propulsion systems for satellites. Today, the space industry plays an indispensable role in our lives. Our mobile phones, TVs, office computers and the internet are all dependent on satellites. Yet, humans have explored only a small chunk of space. Space offers infinite possibilities for a lot of market sectors. The biggest barrier to open the doors of space for improving life on Earth is the fact that the cost of access to space is exorbitantly high. We are a technology based company and we believe that a revolution in the space technology is what it takes to change the world we live in. In the field of satellite propulsion, Bellatrix offers to reduce satellite mission cost through its patented electric propulsion systems. Bellatrix is dedicated to offering its customers high reliability, short wait periods and competitive costs.

Ganesh Chathurdhi is one of the magnificent festivals celebrated in our country with great pomp and show.People bring the Ganesh idol to home and worship it with great devotion and after 10 days ,the idol is moved to water bodies, and the ritual of GANESH VISARJAN is performed i.e., the idol is submerged in water ,believing that Lord Ganesh moves to kailash, blessing his devotees.

So on the eleventh day,we find parade of huge idols on the streets and these idols, usually are no less than 10 feet.If these idols are biodegradable then it is ok,but in most cases, these are made out of PLASTER OF PARIS.This Hemihydrate Calcium Sulphate does not dissolve in water. And lakhs of such idols are being submerged every year. The usage of chemical colours ,which definitely make the idol look attractive,is adding to the mess.Besides, large amount of plastic waste is being generated, on these days.

Though NGOs and the government suggests people to promote only biodegradable idols,we find shops and kharkanas,at every nook and corner of our streets ,making idols out of Plaster of Paris.

Also during the parade, people burn crackers and use loud speakers ,causing air and noise pollution.

On one hand we bother about campaigns like SWACCH BHARAT and CLEANING OF RIVER GANGES .But on the other hand ,during such rituals, we are causing irreparable damage to the water bodies and thereby to mankind and also to the marine life.

On one side crores of Indians are thriving for water and we are merely polluting the existing water, in the name of festival!!??

I don't think it is a right thing to do.The idol makers must be urged not to use Plaster of Paris and instead use clay or any other harmless material.

We must take a vow that we shall worship only those idols that are made out of biodegradable material.Let's make our next chathurdhi, an eco-friendly one.
