There are some among us whose true calling doesn't just lie in one field, but many different ones. Such people are called Multipotentialite because they have potential in multiple fields. One such Multipotentialite is Sravya Kothalanka, the 20-year-old Geology graduate from Bhavans New Science College. We caught up with Sravya for a chat about her work and more!

Sravya, or Vichitralu, which is her artist name, is a singer, a classically trained dancer, an artist and dreams of travelling the high seas after pursuing oceanography. She also dabbles in writing from time to time, and also writes songs, "I'm a full-time artist and a musician, and I also write Telugu songs," says Sravya, "our music is mostly fusion rock, English and Telugu songs. We perform under the name The Kothalanka Project."

Being a full-time musician doesn't stop Sravya from being an artist, as she shows her work in psychedelic and dream art, "Art, to me, it's like meditation. I'm inspired by the Indian Mythology and the things around me," she says.

Sravya goes on to speak about her beginnings with art and music, "My dad was into music and he was the one who introduced me to this world. I did compete in a few competitions before realising that I wanted to do my own thing and not compete. I've been happier since" she laughs, "that being said, I love performing and showcasing my art. It is truly liberating, and as a young person today, it is important for one to liberate themselves and do what they are good at."

We conclude our interview with one final question, asking the young artist where she sees herself 5 years down the line. She smiles before replying, "I have a vision of becoming some mad mystic or travel the world and then write books about the places I visit about all my experiences, for me and for the world."

For the dreamers, artists and many other people who are yet in the search for their true calling in life, Sravya is a great example of embracing her various interests and achieving greatness in it. Maybe your true calling was something you were good at all along? Let us know in the comments, and also check out more of Sravya's work!

Time and again, various surveys popped up by various firms on students' employability and there were a lot of instances when students' mediocrity and lack of employable skills were portrayed as a mistake of the students and not of the system as a whole. But Mentor Mind, a venture started by three youngsters in Hyderabad aims to address this very problem and increase the overall employability of fresh graduates, in a very unique way.
Started by three engineering grads and alumni of the prestigious organisation AIESEC, Luvieen Alva, Megha Gajjala and Suhas Kaul, Mentor Mind aims to bridge the gap between students and employees by providing students with an opportunity to work on live projects, hand-picked by the employers. Their personal experiences in AIESEC and their experiences in engineering colleges was what motivated them to start this.
"It was in 2014 that we wanted to start something related to education, and having studied engineering, all of us knew very well how the education system puts very insignificant amount of focus on practical knowledge. And having gone through the torture of studying a course we had absolutely no interest in and what eventually gave us close to zero skills to do what we do today, helping young students learn beyond our one-dimensional education system," explains Suhas, talking about how they started it.
The result, is an online platform where students & young professionals can access and work on real-time work situations in the form of challenges. These challenges are procured in collaboration with organisations from various industrial and functional backgrounds. "These challenges are also heavily gamified, to motivate students further and are in a wide range of fields ranging from writing, to marketing, to technical challenges," says Suhas.
Another known issue that this team is working towards solving is the issue of ready-made projects being sold to students at various institutions in areas like Ameerpet. "A lot of students buy projects, without having any knowledge or any resources and we are working towards giving them projects where they'll actually work in a proper work scenario and get certified by companies, only based on their work. We also have mentors who constantly guide the students and teach them in an experiential way," he says, adding, "While students can submit our challenges as their final year project, it's not just restricted to that. Students can choose from a wide array of options, even if it has got nothing to do with their field of study. For instance, an engineering student can complete a challenge in writing or design or whatever he/she wishes too, and this will add the much needed boost to their resume if they choose to pursue a career later in that field."
To make it more foolproof, they also have an evaluation criteria and certification is issued only after students submit the proper documentation and fulfil all the evaluation criteria. This entire platform is free of cost for students. "We only charge a nominal fee from the students at the time of certification. Other than that, it's all free and students can take part in any challenge for free," shares Suhas.
"}]

Those familiar with the work of Stephen King and his life should already know that King used to write his stories to deal with his fears. King, who has suffered addictions for a large part of his adult life, wrote his scary and macabre stories in order to face his fear, it was his way of dealing with the things that terrified him the most. This lead to him writing truly terrifying stories ever put on print, but I digress, so here's a review for, in my opinion, his greatest horror work ever.

King might be extremely popular but he is not without faults, and IT as a book is a great example of both his greatest strengths and weaknesses. While on one hand, King went out of his way to decide the kind of monster he wanted to use for the book after questioning people and himself, 'What scared children the most?', on the other hand, the book is 1200 pages long, filled with overlong exposition and long periods of discussion and world building. This can get quite annoying because the number of characters and the number of pages devoted to seemingly insignificant things can be greatly reduced, and yet King takes his time with the characters and the story.

Set over a period of multiple years, with a monster that takes the shape of whatever it's victim fears the most, IT is a book that takes some of the most innocent time of your life, your childhood, and adds horror to it. In some editions, the ominous warning at the start of the book, where it advises readers to read the book in a well-lit room, does a fantastic job in setting the tone without even actually getting to the prose itself.

The prose, on the other hand, is quite conservative with how it handles it's titular character's appearance, but when the horror elements do kick in, King's style proves that there is no equal to him in writing horror. The long gaps between the horror elements add to the feeling of foreboding and you are left anticipating for the monster to be lurking just around the corner on the next page. It makes for a wonderful reading experience, and of course, it will chill you to the bone.

If you think the above image is funny, try reading the book or watching the movie, or wait for the 2017 adaptation to be released.

This book is a cultural phenomenon, to say the least. A fresh new generation of kids across the world developed a fear of clowns after reading this book, and I, when I first read it, was a teenager with a penchant for horror movies and stories. IT was the book that made me think I was done with horror for a good while, the book is terrifying, intense and it will scare you, no matter who you are.

King is king in writing about fears, and this book cemented him as a legend of Horror fiction. I can only think of H.P. Lovecraft, thinking about who could possibly be superior to King's writing style. Lovecraft insipred an entire mythos, and his works are twisted enough to make you feel you are going insane yourself, but that is a story for another time.

I found the piece “The Humanities Make Us Human” to be very intriguing. The author, Edith Stockton, explores a variety of topics related to the lack of interest in the humanities among youth. She writes, “Why have art and literature and philosophical questions that could change and shape our cultural lives lost meaning to us? Created out of expression, rebellion, and pioneering, classical works are timeless – or so we thought.” This statement is eye-opening and sad at the same time. Classic works of literature have powerful backgrounds. They were created, as Edith says, out of expression and rebellion. They can change our lives, and yet we toss them aside in favor of less serious, less challenging works of art.

The fact that today’s youth has little understanding of classical art or literature makes me question what society is being molded into.

Rather than reading Shakespeare, teens read fashion magazines and pine over their favorite celebs. English teachers giving their students assignments to read classic texts hear groans and exasperated sighs. Furthermore, “artistry” has been dragged down to a level of showering pictures with colorful filters for “likes” on social media. What does this say about us? These things don’t make us human. The humanities make us human, and our grasp on them is weakening with every moment. Edith’s piece opened my eyes to how the definition of “classics” is changing along with our society. We can’t let go of what makes us human.

The above part is an Edith's view of humanity around the world...Through exploration of the humanities we learn how to think creatively and critically, to reason, and to ask questions. Because these skills allow us to gain new insights into everything from poetry and paintings to business models and politics, humanistic subjects have been at the heart of a liberal arts education since the ancient Greeks first used them to educate their citizens.

Research into the human experience adds to our knowledge about our world. Through the work of humanities scholars, we learn about the values of different cultures, about what goes into making a work of art, about how history is made. Their efforts preserve the great accomplishments of the past, help us understand the world we live in, and give us tools to imagine the future.

Today, humanistic knowledge continues to provide the ideal foundation for exploring and understanding the human experience. Investigating a branch of philosophy might get you thinking about ethical questions. Learning another language might help you gain an appreciation for the similarities in different cultures. Contemplating a sculpture might make you think about how an artist's life affected her creative decisions. Reading a book from another region of the world, might help you think about the meaning of democracy. Listening to a history course might help you better understand the past, while at the same time offer you a clearer picture of the future.

"TO DENY PEOPLE THEIR HUMAN RIGHTS IS TO CHALLENGE THEIR VERY HUMANITY"

You must not lose faith in humanity...Humanity is an ocean;if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not becomes dirty...

Every now and then, I give myself mental exercises, just to stretch my brain out a little before the real work begins. Sometimes I try to make verb-noun associations, sometimes I try to calculate the force with which I need to throw my wrapper (neglecting air resistance, of course) to let it fall into the bin. So this one time, I tried to think without using words. Every thought, every shadow of a thought I have must be acknowledge and sent away before it becomes words.

When I was a kid, I lived at this place that had a steep slope that led down to the main street which led outside. I used to stand at the top and begin running down the slope as fast as I could. I use to go so fast my legs couldn't keep up with my speed and I could feel myself losing control and falling, falling, as my legs fell behind the rest of my body. That's how it felt; trying to think without words. My thoughts had to go faster than the words popped up, so I could barely think what I was thinking, barely begin to taste it before I had to send it away for the next one. And the next one had words coming behind it too, so I could only feel the shadow of the thought before I pushed that away too. Trying to think without words was like falling; I was tripping over my own self.

The whole exercise made me realise how important words were to my brain. I couldn't form a single coherent idea without using them; they were all just half-formed impressions. That progress in a micro-society sped along much faster after that culture invented language is known, but perhaps more important to the progress of humans as a whole was the creating of written language. The idea that thoughts, ideas, event, information could be stored on a physical object, transported and retrieved from that physical object was insane! It changed how the whole world interacted and suddenly made the world so much bigger than only that part you could physically travel to.

Realising all this made me have immense respect for words, both spoken and written, of whatever language they may be.
"}]
