The debate whether leaders are born or made is a very old one, with many true leaders claiming that leaders are made, not born. But in case of Kovida Yalamanchi, a 12th class student, it seems as if leaders are born. This multi-faceted teenager has penned a book 'The Window Seat', started an initiative 'Reading With The Tunes'; in addition to being associated with two NGOs - Asritha and Nachiket where she mentors girls on writing.

Reading With The Tunes is an initiative by her, started two years ago. With her musical journey having started when she was just 7 years old, she's now a top-notch piano player and after realizing that young talent in the city doesn’t have a proper platform where they can just show up and showcase their talent, without worrying about anything else; she started this initiative in association with Hyderabad Western Music Foundation.

txt
rich_1486636813640

"When I was in the initial stages of learning music, I never had a platform where I could just go and give a recital. It was always some piano competition in which we had to play specific pieces to be judged upon. With this initiative, anyone can come and play whatever they like; just for their love for music," says Kovida. She also added that the ‘reading’ part of the initiative is for budding writers to tell their stories or recite their poems.

"This way, like-minded kids can come together and share their talents and also learn from one another," she adds, and says that it was her first experience at leadership and that it taught her a lot. While this was going on, she also started penning down her book, based on her travels. "The book is a collection of 11 fiction short stories which I penned from observations around me during my travels. To it, I added my imagination. A few stories were written when I was in 7th standard," says Kovi, as she's known by everyone.

txt
rich_1486636811934

And now, she's conducting a writing workshop for the girls at the NGO. "Since one of Reading With The Tunes focuses is reading/literacy, I have decided to start a writing workshop. After finishing my first book, The Window Seat & Other Stories, I realized two things: A good story can arise from any one experience or incident, and that writing is the best form of relaying all observations and experiences," explains Kovi.

After the workshop, she will then make everyone write stories and then go on to publish. "The idea is to find the stories that have a good foundation in order to be built on. I will then work with the finalists to fine tune and polish their stories. And the end result is to have all of the finalist's stories published in a book! The finalists will be announced on the February 18th as a part of the awards ceremony," she explains, adding, "It does not matter if the experience or incident you want to write about is boring, what matters is what the reader will gather from it. As humans, we are all different from each other, no two people are alike, similarly, with experiences, the way we interpret, perceive and what we learn will always be different! And I can only imagine what we will be able to pick up from the stories written by these girls!"
"}]
Have you ever dreamt of having all the yummy food items around you? how would it be like showering in sodas, sitting on thousands of scoops of ice cream or eating as much of pizzas or burgers you want without them being finished. well I'm sure most of us just dream about them and not fulfill them for two obvious reasons, the fear of going bankrupt and the other not finding enough clothes in the plus size. It's the second reason in my case. On my every visit to USA, I get fantasised looking the wide range of colourful candies piled up in the shopping malls and convenient stores. "Just drop a coin and grab one candy" or "try some of our new cookies" are the sign boards I'm more attracted too than "buy one get one free" boards. Just the sight of beautifully decorated and arranged cakes and confectionery makes us want to bite into them.

Even though I can enjoy them for a long time, I still cannot resist the strong aroma of rasam and sambhar my mom makes. The sweet smell of laddus can makes me go gaga. Being a South Indian is an added advantage to a foodie. He/she can gobble a platter full of tasty dishes within no time. In India, the food is treated as sacred and divine blessing of God and we pray him before and after having it.

Being obsessed with food is the best way to fight stress. I just have more food when I'm angry or tired. So I suggest everyone to eat what all you like when young. Eat as long as you can't take it anymore. Then work out to eat more.

Happy munching everyone!!!

One of the major concerns for liberals in our country is the fact that the conservatives spew a lot of hatred in various channels; whether it is writing about it or talking about it or using social media for the same. This kind of hate-speech is what led to the whole 'India is intolerant' angle, and rightly so because the said hatred was projected against everything and everyone whose views were even remotely not aligned with the right conservative party. But at the same time, a lot of digital platforms which are supposed to be the voice of the youngsters in the country, do the exact same, albeit with the opposite perspective.

As a left leaning liberal myself, though I agree with the perspectives portrayed in these platforms, I do not agree with the presentation and portrayal of these very perspectives. I agree with and firmly stand by the beliefs and the concerns that need to be raised - political concerns, gender concerns, concerns against prejudices and taboos, casteism and a lot more.

For instance, there is one particular digital platform that raises serious questions about openness, breaking taboos, sexuality and gender but that platform again, talks about these issues in hate-filled ways. While raising awareness about taboos is absolutely needed in our country; I believe outrightly condemning the taboos and blaming religions (which is done by platforms like this one) will only alienate the ones believing in those (who constitute the majority in the country) more and will most probably act as a reinforcing factor.

And especially in a country like ours, where a major cultural shift has been happening over the past two decades (to which a significant chunk of the population is against); openness about sexuality, gender equality, freedom of speech and healthy political debating is necessary and should be brought in carefully by well researched, meaningful, analytical and neutral content.
"}]

It's true that humans, when the world was just created or we could say born with a big bang, were the first natural immigrants. But did you know that elephants are natural immigrants too, just like us they like to move about and mark their own territories? For millions of years, if they felt that the conditions were unfavourable they just moved. Simple right? Sometimes I wonder if we humans could also move like that. How exciting and fun it would be!

But coming back to the point. For example let's consider South Africa's North -West Province's exclusive 75000 hectares Madikwe Game Reserve, it had a very few number of elephants at the beginning, later the herd started swelling. So naturally elephants being the immigrants decided to make their own corridor according to the ancient elephant migratory routes. Basically the 21st century elephants following in the footsteps of their ancestors (just like we Indians do ;-)). Corridors have huge benefits because wildlife can move to different vegetation areas. It's the most natural pattern for the elephants compared to the other wild animals.

Now,the fun part elephants check into a lodge in Zambia! Yup, when the builders of a five star hotel lodge in Zambia constructed their hotel over an ancient elephant path. They assumed that the pachyderms that annually used the trail in order to get to the area's beautiful mango tree would reroute their course. But these animals are no cars or jeeps to reroute just because a lodge is in between. The herd just walks into the lodge initially scaring the hotel managers and workers. But eventually they got used to it too. The elephants walk in so gracefully and relaxed that not a thing is disturbed. Though wild animals are unpredictable these gentle giants sure do know the meaning of discipline better than humans. We sometimes get to learn a lot from animals too and to be honest it does open our mind and also tells us how small the world is and yet we know nothing about it.

A word that is commonly used in everyday speech, but often misinterpreted by many. People fail to recognize this word as what it actually means rather than what they understand about it. The 'feminine' part of the word is what makes them recoil, at the very mention of it.
But what does it really mean? The political, economical and social equality of both men and women. That’s right, feminism can be very well viewed as a synonym to equality. Equal opportunities, equal rights, and equal minds.

With frequent incorrect use of this word, the meaning of it has been under the shadows of negativity. When the word is used in a casual conversation, people immediately start judging that it’s the same old sob story of women needing attention. But this is my small effort to give validation to the word. We do not need attention, we need respect, opportunities, freedom and everything else that the men of the society have been entitled to from the very beginning of time.

To progress as a society, we need to join forces and not put each other down. Let’s keep this in mind the next time this word is used incorrectly, feel free to correct them. In the words of Malala Yousafzai, “We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.”

"}]
