College is something I looked forward to my whole life, the idea of going to college made me feel mature and grown up. And now that I am studying in a college, my dreams have turned into reality. Like almost every school going child, I would also hear a lot about college life, aka: the adult life you know the life where you make your own choices, create your own world and actually get to live in it and now being a college student I get it:

There are 2 sides to everything let me tell you the best parts:

1) It teaches me to survive without my phone :P

2) I'm surrounded by people with different and unique personalities and this help's me broaden my perspective and educate myself

3) The lecturers that I'm blessed with are wired with one goal and that is to help us as students to have a bright future and to identify our interests

4) I'm surrounded by like-minded people

5) Learning that everything is possible.

6) b̶u̶l̶l̶y̶i̶n̶g̶

7) Freedom to voice out my opinions in any area, I'm allowed to say what I feel and think.

8) I'm always encouraged to try new things.

9) Realize my full potential, and get out of my comfort zone.

10) Be the best version of myself and to work hard and achieve great heights.

I usually write my blogs on Mondays but I was travelling and I couldn't write on Monday. I attended a startup event in Dublin, Ireland last week. The trip also included a short stop in London and later I went to Dublin. While it was obviously an exciting thing for me as I got to travel to two different countries, it was extremely exciting for me to meet many top-notch startup CEOs and investors and learn from them. The conversations I had with them makes me write this now and makes me want to advise students to be curious all the time.

For instance, my curiosity is what led me to do everything that I did in life so far and even start this company. I was curious to know, to learn and the more I learnt, the more it made me want to excel. Even now, my curiosity is what makes me want to learn more and continue improving myself on how I run stuMagz and how I lead my teams. I can say this with conviction especially after this trip of mine because of the conversations I had with entrepreneurs from all over the globe as those conversations put things in perspective for me and now I am confident of handling certain things in a different manner when it comes to my life as an entrepreneur and as a CEO of a startup.

The best thing you can do for yourself as a student is have a child-like curiosity about everything around you. Children are always curious about everything around them and they ask a lot of questions. You can and should do the same. For example, you go to a college fest in some other college, be curious about every event that goes on there. You will discover things about yourself that you didn't know before. In most cases, it will make you realise what you don't know and make you want to learn and grow. You go to a conference/talk, make the most of it and interact with everyone around you, and not just with the speakers, interact and network with other students there as you will definitely learn something that you don't know. You come across a term somewhere that you don't know, immediately google about it. Keep track of events on stuMagz to find out about interesting events. Keep playing the daily quiz to test your own knowledge and to update your knowledge.

Stay curious and let your curiosity enable your growth!
"}]
I have been involved with stuMagz for almost three years now and prior to this, I led teams of freshers in other places that I worked at. Whether it is dealing with students or with freshers, one thing that continuously frustrates me is the fact that most of these people (regardless of how skilled they are at what they do), seem to have no sense of accountability whatsoever. Freshers and students make mistakes while working, owing to their lack of experience in best-practices or whichever but they seem to lack any sense of responsibility and work ethic. If you're thinking I am ranting this to blame students, you are wrong. I am ranting this to blame colleges and the education system that we have put in place which infantilises even adult students.

txt
rich_1571720866882

What triggered this thought in me on a Monday when I am supposed to start my work week with a bang and impress the living hell out of my bosses with my self-proclaimed stellar efficiency? I read a news item which said students in some college in Karnataka were made to wear cardboard boxes on their heads in an attempt to stop them from cheating in an exam. This de-humanising and humiliating treatment of students is just a symbol of the way students aren't even considered people by most college faculty members. I read another news item which spoke of UP government banning mobile phones in colleges (though this was later corrected by some news sources as false news). The fundamental point here is that colleges behave in a manner that treats adult students as children and this seems to stem from the perception that 'elders' usually have - 'you are children, you don't know anything'.

txt
rich_1571720866883

I firmly believe, if anything, students and youngsters know more than 'elders' in many aspects as their knowledge is the collective knowledge of what they acquired by themselves and the knowledge imparted to them by the 'elders'. With this, I choose to state that colleges should stop behaving in this manner and start imparting a sense of responsibility in students and hold them accountable for their actions instead of blindly imposing age-old perceptions on students. A student doesn't attend classes, he/she won't probably know what has been taught and subsequently doesn't do the exams well, then so be it, let the student deal with the consequences of it. Things like this will teach youngsters accountability and responsibility than blindly imposing rules on them and infantilising them.

This kind of behaviour on colleges' part is partly because of the importance the education system puts on clearing exams than on educating the students and partly because of the 'elders are better than younger ones' perception. Clearing exams should be a by-product of education, not the other way round. Colleges should ensure a student learns everything that is required to function as an adult as opposed to just having a certificate.

To reaffirm my point, as I was writing this, a friend of mine who is a fresh graduate in her first job, called me up and I was telling her about it and she agreed with it a 100% as the company that hired her was spending a lot of time training the recruits on various dynamics involved in a workplace and she told me people there were still worried whether their phones would be taken away or some such. These 22-23 year-olds still have a sense of being under complete authority, because colleges treated them like that and never let them make their choices. Their trainers were passing snide comments on how freshers are dumb and don't know anything (this is something that even I have been guilty of doing) but those comments are actually true because of how colleges treat students.

Colleges should start treating students like individuals, like people. Period.

txt
rich_1571720866884

A library is a place where we learn new things. A place where we can be there for hours and not realise where has time gone by. I know there are a lot of people who would disagree with me. But for the people who love to read library is no less than a heaven.

txt

While the same can be said for sports. People can't go a day without playing some or the other sports especially the one they love.

txt

I'm one of those people who can be in the library for hours and not realize the time. While sports are not my strongest point.

txt

But having a balance of both sports and studies are important in today's life. We don't have much day to day outdoor activity so sports helps us keep our body in shape while reading keeps our mind in shape. So both are important. Do you agree?

txt
This short story is about how we are going through examination in our daily life. I am not talking about the studies, it's about real life experience exam. You may think that if we study we will pass the exam. Yes, you are absolutely correct. But passing is not a big deal, we need to understand the concept that what we are writing. Now let's talk real life exam , you may wonder that what is real life exam. Not only the students will write their exams, a part from them in this world each and every person is writing their exam in some or the other way. You may say that how every person is writing their exam. Let me give the example: A mother who cooks at home, for her it is a exam that the food should be tasty. If good is tasty then automatically she is passed in exam. A Father who work, if he does the good job he might be getting a very good income then he is also passed in exam. Like this in this world teacher, doctor, engineer, policemen, army etc... All of them writing their exam in different level. So, in this story we can learn that the person should not be afraid of exam, thinking that he might fail in exam. But let me clear that FAIL(First Attempt in learning). Once we fail don't worry because you have many opportunities in your life and don't miss the any opportunity which your getting, try it if u lose nothing will happen you will get another chance. There is a famous quote "TRY AND TRY UNTIL U SUCCEED "

txt

In this story we say that examination is common for every person but being success is what matters a lot. And Examination is a part of our life thats why be enough confident to face and accept the challenges antime in our life

txt
Hooray!! it is a rainy season. We are somehow enjoying and sometimes infuriated with the lashing rain. So I thought of writing about rain

We Indians have our priorities sorted… While the rest of the world looks for an umbrella every time it rains. No Indian household will believe, monsoon has been started unless someone gets a call to hang out for a hot cup of adrak chai, youngsters playing football and cricket in the rain and kids playing with the paper boats they do and jumping in the puddles.

When it rains, all of the sudden earth transforms from this dry, dusty, piece of land into a gorgeous, green, beauty that is full of life and vigor. All around it is like earth coming alive celebrating life itself. The smell of the rain when it hits the hot earth is what rejoices our inner selves. The pitter-patter of the raindrops makes soothing music to the soul

Though rains add thrill and excitement to the people of all ages, Rainy days appear gloomy and depressing to many. People stuck in traffic jams due to chaotic roads and waterlogging at times. Due to undue haste, traffic congestion and low visibility, accidents may happen.

On a serious note, rain means everything to farmers. While rains are good for the crops excess rains could destroy crops. Mosquitoes start breeding on the surface of stagnant puddles causing dengue and malaria.

Creating some lovely as well as gruesome memories, every year this monsoon brings some special stories to all households, to all the ages. Grandparents feeling the pleasant rain, seeing their grandchildren playing. Parents rushing to the office (oh...no..! they get late because of rain). Teenagers get ready with their cam lenses to capture the beautiful nature, enjoying the rain, making their stories with a hot sip of chai with pakoda and cool chilled ice creams. Kids playing in the rain, sometimes get sick drenching in the rain, thereby getting a reason to bunk school.

"}]
Firstly, apologies for feeding too much mental health into your brains through my last few write-ups but let's just hope this would be the last or maybe not.

We often hear people talking about their "insomnia" which actually translates to having slept in the afternoon and not being able to get some sleep during the night. We hear people saying that they have "OCD" because they didn't like where a cup has been placed or how their bed has been set, some are "depressed" because they fought with someone close to them, the others are "suffering with anxiety" because they can't handle an hour-based stress of their results. There are a hundred instances as to how we misuse actual disease-names as something very normal, as just another feeling.

Imagine saying "I broke my leg" when it's only your toe which's hit some table edge. Doesn't make sense. Does it? It's just the same with mental illnesses as well. We can't say "I have cancer" while all we observed in ourselves is just a symptom or two of the common cold. Can we? When bodily diseases cannot be joked about or used in place of a temporary discomfort/illness, why can't the same rule be followed for mental illnesses? I am guilty of having said many things as such using the names of serious illnesses to just express momentary emotions.

It narrows down the chances of someone with an actual mental disease to be believed in, diagnosed and cured. If diseases come down to sound like just another day-day occurrence, who is going to take up the responsibility of bringing about seriousness around the same topic over and over again?

It's not like all of us are empathetic towards people who open up regarding their mental health issues; we're already in a sorry state and all we happen to do is just make it worse for ourselves. Saying it out loud, getting rid of the taboo or stigma around it doesn't work this way. This is probably the only downside of normalizing mental health care.

I wouldn't prefer delving into details but yeah, personally, there was a time when I couldn't manage to eat one single meal a day and had lost about 3-4 kilos in just a month and a half. I would get shivers down my body upon encountering certain situations(limited to a single issue), fiddle with anything and everything that's around, shut myself out and precisely think of myself to be undeserving of positive emotions around me. Some of these things still hit me in the middle of the day but I'm doing better now. Back then, when it was getting hard to control I had no clue whether it was as serious as it appeared to me in my head. I did not even try talking about my issue as a serious matter of concern because I had heard plenty of people around me talking about how the youth today feels it's cool to be mentally unwell. It definitely did not feel "cool." After that, I still struggle to identify with basic emotions that I happen to experience each day as well. It feels like I would become a part of the tribe that romanticizes mental illnesses.

I still don't know whether half the things that I happen to go through are really pulling me down mentally or not.

"I don't want to create drama out of something that everyone is bound to go through and eventually feels okay about."

This thought inside me has been instilled because I don't want to be a part of many of us who think that it's cool to be mentally unwell.

I don't say that I was mentally unwell or that I needed help back then or that I need help now, all I am trying to say is that the way I struggle to express how I feel in the fear of being misjudged as a lazy teenager; someone with an actual mental illness must be weeping in silence too.

Stop being the person who romanticizes mental illnesses. Stop using illnesses to describe feelings. Stop dismissing people when they reach out to you. Suggest them to confide in someone else if you aren't emotionally available at that point of time. Don't be the reason why someone decides to never talk about how they feel anymore.

Basic communication about whether or not you can be there for a person can go a long way. Basic communication about how you exactly feel can help your own self be at peace as well. It will not appear to be a pseudo mental illness if you just say I am sad/tensed/disappointed etc. Thus, it will not eliminate the option of being heard- for someone out there who really needs to be heard. There's a word for almost every emotion and experience. FIND IT and USE IT.

Let's try and stop conveniently replacing words with mental illnesses just because we fail to fetch the right words!
"}]
