The Berlin-based corruption vigilante Transparency International (TI) has ranked India 76 out of 168 countries in its latest Corruption Perception Index. The same rank is shared with six other countries: Brazil, Burkina Faso, Thailand, Tunisia and Zambia. Interestingly, India's neighbour Pakistan is a long way away at 117.
India has been struggling with corruption from the very beginning; with the common citizens bearing the most brunt of it. Whether it is the small bribe paid to a constable or the bigger bribes one has to pay to get basic services at government offices, it is the common citizen who always is on the receiving (or rather giving) end of corruption. Various governments have tried countless methods to curtail it with little to no success; with the latest venture being this demonitization. Regardless of the governments, every Indian dreams of a utopian scenario where corruption. India achieving soon this is more important for present students, as it will be their country soon.
Nevertheless, we can take tiny consolation in the fact that we are not from one of these most corrupt countries listed below.
1. Somalia
Somalia is the most corrupt country in the world, with the country's economy majorly dominated by private sector. As per a World Bank report, about $130 million had been given to the government which was unaccounted.
2. North Korea
Not surprisingly, the most militarized country - North Korea is the second most corrupt country in the world. The country is notorious for having very little electricity and sending its citizens to prison camps. The government is known for squandering away all the money on military; with most North Korea’s government and economy highly shrouded in mystery.
3. Sudan
The country has been in a constant state of war for several decades now, with tong-standing conflicts between competing factions and ethnic groups. This has effectively destroyed the country's ability to operate efficiently; with over 64% of the population living below poverty line.
4. Afghanistan
The country's geographic location has put it in the middle of many conflicts over hundreds, if not thousands of years. The situation has been worse in the last 30 years; with extensive heroin smuggling; which in-turn breeds a lot of corruption. Even the former president Hamid Karzai was known to have been taking money. There was also Kabul Bank scandal of $1 billion and another fraud where only $180 million was recovered out of $980 million fraud.
5. South Sudan
Having declared independence in 2011 from Sudan, South Sudan is one of the world’s youngest countries. It ranks fifth on this list because of a lack of the traditional long-standing government structures in place that many others do. This in turn, has paved the way for many corrupt politicians to practically loot the country.
6. Iraq
With the socio-political situation in the country steadily worsening over the last 15 years because of the Second American Invasion, Iraq stands sixth on this list. Arrival of ISIS has only worsened it.
7. Turkmenistan
Turkmenistan has the worst possible neighbours, bordered by Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The country is fortunate to have vast reserves of crude oil and natural gas to supplement the economy, although they are controlled by the government. Misuse of the state’s revenues have driven many investors away and led to high levels of corruption.
8. Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan lacks law enforcement and its judicial system faces many drawbacks. Moreover, the country faces some serious issues due to limited resources. Karimov has been President of the country since Uzbekistan actually became a country after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991; and subsequently his government is known for rampant corruption.
9. Libya
Libya has always been under political turmoil and it has worsened ever since Gaddafi's death. The economy of the country fell as there has been a steady decline in the GDP. It will be this till there is a permanent government in place there.
10. Eritrea
Eritrea joined this list just last year. Many across the world haven't even heard of this small African country which is one of the most repressed economies in the World. It recently opened doors to foreign investments; which subsequently allowed all government officials to fill their pockets.
